This is going back 35 years, I was a mechanic, and we had cable blade, pony start dozer. We also had a old dozer that had the clutch/brake to turn. I remember changing out the driveshaft brake for the clutch several times. So long ago, I cannot remember the CAT model numbers. Was not long after that we transitioned to Hydrostatic transmissions. My favorite was a Fiat/Allis that ran a non-muffled stack right out of the turbo. Loved to smoke out my fellow wrench benders on start up, lol Thanks for the memories.
Now that is music! Heavy metal music. Brute strength sounds. I was a diesel boy on a side boom D8 and pipe bending operator on a 36" natural gas pipeline construction contract. I was all of 17 years old at the time. These machines never let us down.
Inspirational stuff here. Makes me want to get up to camp and get our 1946 Allis HD7 up and running again. Love the old crawlers. Dad has a John Deere 40 and a Cletrac OC3 up there too. Keep saving the good old stuff from the scrappers!

I had an old D9G ran it word a straight 10 inch stainless pipe, now that sounded trucking awesome, you learnt very fast to not forget to protect your ears. I used to have ear plugs and muffs, if you didn't when you got home at night was ringing😅
A number of years ago I ran a 2U that had serial number 15501. It was bought from James City County in Virginia. It was originally a US Army COE machine. It had been adapted with a 24V starting system and the PONY removed by the CAT dealer, also had bolt on track segments. We removed the double drum winch to lighten it up a bit. To my knowledge it's still alive and walking in the Upstate area of South Carolina.
+Bostonpowercat If memory serves, it was a 1951 model. It had the bolt on segment ring welded on by the CAT dealer. The electric starter motor made starting a breeze even in cold weather. I especially liked running it in winter. After a few minutes of running, you were plenty warm. In the summer, it was HELL with a set of tracks. The cooling fan wasn't reversible, made you want to ride naked because it was so hot. I always wanted to try one out with the pull scraper. I bet that was quite an orchestra to conduct. :)
Lol riding naked, now that would get a few looks on the job site!! Just done a bit of research the 2u ended in 53 at serial number 23537 so 51 sounds about right. The bolt on segments were a huge improvement, so much easier to work if they needed changing. Would love to get a pull scraper ourselves!! So you still in the industry? Cheers
I got away from earth moving in 2002 to take a gov job. I'd done a bit of all, heavy equip operator, mechanic, I had some health issues pop up in 2000. The security and benefits of a Gov job just worked out better for me. My current job title is Emergency Vehicle Tech. Been keeping our county's fire trucks rolling for nearly 14 yrs now.
Great to hear you are all sorted, job security means a lot in this day and age and the construction industry is a tough one at the moment. Sounds like you have some responsibility with the fire trucks, keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Oh, I love it! Thank god for people who keep these things running. Sounds partly like a steam locomotive, and partly like a jet fighter when it fires up! And of course, I have to add that a "bulldozer" is technically just the blade attachment. The rest is actually a "caterpillar tractor". Just like how a "backhoe" actually refers to an attachment that fits to the back of a tractor. Anyway, point is, you can't call a bulldozer without a blade a "bulldozer", technically. Not that that will stop me!

very nice job we used to park on a hill lol the little motors are high on my list of not the best of Cat but my dad and i would fight over how to start them a lot , made me love ele start glad the steering was in good shape
I think one of the cooler parts of your video was to see the startup for the 22A. I've heard about the smaller startup engines from stories my grandpa told, but this is the first time I've seen one in actual use! That's pretty darned cool. :)

Year's ago I worked for a Hard rock contractor that had an old Cat D9H Built in 1958. that had a gasoline pony motor like this one. Year's later while working for a pipeline outfit which used D9 based Pipeliners. We were in a very remote section of mountains in southern Arizona when we had one lose it's starter. They were so old that Empire Machine(Cat dealership) had no rebuilt units nor did anyone else, so I pulled it out shipping it to our shop in Farmington NM via Greyhound (It weighed 98 pounds) a few days later a second D9 lost its starter. So for the next 2 weeks I had to start 1 D9, pull it's starter, then travel to the next D9 install the starter, fire it off, pull it, travel to the next D9 and repeat.
@Richard C,that’s a great story thanks for sharing that.Yes when those pony motors are running great no problems but they can become a pain very quickly!.In the process of restoring an old D8 2u pipelayer at the moment she will need main engine work and pony ,been sat for 30 years.Cheers.👍
I have a IH TD-15 and I sure have turbo envy after hearing your Cat start. Mine is a gas start diesel run engine without a pony motor. Hindsight being 20/20 a pony motor start is so much easier to deal with.
Hey, thanks for the comment 👍 Your right about the turbo size, it is a fair old lump, in the UK it's often referred to as the "old dustbin lid" turbo due to its sheer size!!
Bsck in the late 60s we tried to push start an International harvester TD21 with new AC HD16m.When we engaged the clutch on theTD21 the HD16 would simply quit moving.The HD16 had a hydrulic type tranny,the TD21 was mechanical all the way.We had to get an old IH TD20 much smaller unit use it to push start the TD21.Funniest part of the whole deal was the HD16M was a new unit at an army depot waiting to be sent out to a using unit Both the old IH units were being surplused as too old and worn out.
You can't fault the old stuff, modern day equipment has moved on a lot, but it's just not built with the same quality, too many electronics to go wrong!

I had a holiday job on my uncles farm doing some drainage. All we needed to do was fill in a ditch, but the battery on his little D4 was flat. we tried towing it with his ute - no go. We then drove back to get his Little leyland tractor, battery flat! We tow started that with his ute, across we go again, this tractor wouldn't do it either grass to wet and tractor to light. Back again to the shed with the leyland to get the big nuffield, you guessed it battery flat again! towed the Nuffield with the Leyland. Then back and towed the D4 with the Nuffield!. Total time taken 2 hours, time to fill the ditch 10 minutes Oh and before we started that morning we had to crash start the ute! because it had a stuffed battery too!
worker: "i'm gonna start the old caterpillar today." old caterpillar: laughs in smoke. worker: "gonna give it one last try" old caterpillar: ok, you win. (sputters to life)
Funny story..at least I think: My Granddad had a D6 Cat and him and my Dad were trying to pull start it with a tractor. My Granddad accidentally put it in reverse, instead of a forward gear. When he dropped the clutch, it blew all the oil from the oil bath filter right in his face. The look on his (very oily) face. lol

Yes it is turbo charged, the old stuff was built to last that's why it's still going great all these years later! There's a lot even older stuff out there still running like new day 👍
Hi, are you specifically talking about starting in reverse? If so any Diesel engine that has a manual gearbox will start in reverse as long as the engine is turning over when you pull the clutch in it should start weather your going in forward or reverse. If the engine has an automatic box then you can't jump start it at all. Hope this answers your question?
Bostonpowercat Hi. I mean it looked like the dozer being pulled somehow got "jump started" because of the other dozer pulling it. Kind of like how you can take a manual truck and let it coast down a hill, pop the clutch, and have it start. I just wondered if that was the same thing that was happening to the dozer being pulled.
Yep you've got it, exactly the same as if you were to coast a truck down a hill and pop it into gear to get it started, just in this case we used the other dozer to pull it along to get the momentum going!!
Some diesel engines can be started in the wrong direction, if the gear is set in reverse, and the vehicle is pulled forward. Not good. There is no oil pressure, and the dirty exhaust exits through to air filter. Better stop it immediately!
Do you guys just do this for fun, or is this to preserve the engines and drivetrains, so they don't just sit there and rust? Also, where does all the smoke coming from under the hood of the second D8 come from? The intake manifold, or is that just leakage from the exhaust?
Bit of both really, it is a hobby, but it does the machines a world of good to give them a run now and again, gets the oil around the engine and keeps the tracks running freely. Well spotted on the smoke from under the bonnet on the second D8, it's from the exhaust manifold, the manifold is pretty rusty and there's a few holes in it so not all the smoke is going up the stack!! It's on the list of jobs that need doing, it's just a long list that never seems to end is the problem!!
+RDCST Thanks for the questions, yes the pedal is the brake, the levers operate the steering clutches. When you brake and pull the lever at the same time it only applies the brake to one track so the machine turns left or right depending on which lever you pulled. Hope that makes sense? The two big pots on the rear is the winch, technically known as the cable control unit, the steel rope can be used to operate a compatible scraper box or it can be used to lift the dozers blade up and down when attached. Everything is hydraulic these days, but before hydraulics became prevalent the dozer blade was lifted up and down using steel rope, besides just fitting the blade a whole gantry has to be fitted so the cable can run from the rear to the front. Sorry, I don't know how to explain better. Their job are the same? Because it looks like you are talking about the one that the big pots are front to front.
+RDCST Glad you got back to us with another question 👍 They are both cable control units, just different designs and yes they do the same job, but I know what you mean they do look different. The machine doing the towing has the two big pots front to front, that cable control unit (ccu) or winch would have been more common on the bigger machines, the Caterpillar D9. The two big pots front to front earned it a nickname with guys in the industry, it was called the "Mae West" winch after the actress who had two rather large assets just like the winch!!! These old beast are great until you have to work on them, I had to break the track and replace a few of the rollers on the under carrage and fix the tensioner, also had to pull the clutch for repairs, all I have to say is to pull your bootstraps up tight for these, especially if you wring off the 7/8 bolts on the rollers, drilling and tapping upside down is a chore.
I run an engine machine shop in Regina Sask. Canada. Last week we had a pair of heads in to check over for a customer with a D8H machine. This week we have another customer in to us with his crankshaft and connecting rods for a model D8-2U. The crankshaft had to be pulled due to a failed connecting rod bearing. If I have a chance I may be able to take some video of the crankshaft journals being reground on our crankshaft grinder if anyone is interested in seeing this. I will also be trying to access some parts for this customer. I would be interested in any leads you can share with me on gasket sets, ring sets, rod bearings and pin bushings.

Steering clutches and brakes would make a man out of a boy. We had an early 50's IH TD-18. It started on gas, then switched to diesel when warm enough... NO pony motor!

My dad had a D4 that he used to start by rolling down a hill. Propped the blade up with a block of wood - started every time.

Bsck in the late 60s we tried to push start an International harvester TD21 with new AC HD16m.When we engaged the clutch on theTD21 the HD16 would simply quit moving.The HD16 had a hydrulic type tranny,the TD21 was mechanical all the way.We had to get an old IH TD20 much smaller unit use it to push start the TD21.Funniest part of the whole deal was the HD16M was a new unit at an army depot waiting to be sent out to a using unit Both the old IH units were being surplused as too old and worn out.
You can't fault the old stuff, modern day equipment has moved on a lot, but it's just not built with the same quality, too many electronics to go wrong!

I had a holiday job on my uncles farm doing some drainage. All we needed to do was fill in a ditch, but the battery on his little D4 was flat. we tried towing it with his ute - no go. We then drove back to get his Little leyland tractor, battery flat! We tow started that with his ute, across we go again, this tractor wouldn't do it either grass to wet and tractor to light. Back again to the shed with the leyland to get the big nuffield, you guessed it battery flat again! towed the Nuffield with the Leyland. Then back and towed the D4 with the Nuffield!. Total time taken 2 hours, time to fill the ditch 10 minutes
Oh and before we started that morning we had to crash start the ute! because it had a stuffed battery too!
worker: "i'm gonna start the old caterpillar today."
old caterpillar: laughs in smoke.
worker: "gonna give it one last try"
old caterpillar: ok, you win. (sputters to life)

Funny story..at least I think: My Granddad had a D6 Cat and him and my Dad were trying to pull start it with a tractor. My Granddad accidentally put it in reverse, instead of a forward gear. When he dropped the clutch, it blew all the oil from the oil bath filter right in his face. The look on his (very oily) face. lol

Your right the donkey engine on the D8 being towed is not currently working, it's a project for the winter, but we wanted to give the main engine a run as it hadn't been started for so long.

Hi Lee, thanks for the comment and yes you are right, but this is a UK machine, it was built in Glasgow and different serial numbers were used in the UK as opposed to the States even though they are exactly the same machine. Cheers

A mi juicio tenian un unico problema El odioso Pony Motor Una vez que el Pony se decidia a trabajar, el diesel era una maravilla . Yo repare muchos CAT con Pony Motor Solo a 2 le adapte arranque electrico y antecamaras con glow plug... Didn't Rev the 2U too much as it had been stood for nearly 2 years so it was just a quiet amble out to get her warm and some oil around it.

Yes it is turbo charged, the old stuff was built to last that's why it's still going great all these years later! There's a lot even older stuff out there still running like new day 👍

How does pulling a dozer in reverse "jump start" it? Does it work with all dozers or only a certain engine type?
Hi, are you specifically talking about starting in reverse? If so any Diesel engine that has a manual gearbox will start in reverse as long as the engine is turning over when you pull the clutch in it should start weather your going in forward or reverse. If the engine has an automatic box then you can't jump start it at all. Hope this answers your question?

Hi. I mean it looked like the dozer being pulled somehow got "jump started" because of the other dozer pulling it.
Kind of like how you can take a manual truck and let it coast down a hill, pop the clutch, and have it start.
I just wondered if that was the same thing that was happening to the dozer being pulled.
Yep you've got it, exactly the same as if you were to coast a truck down a hill and pop it into gear to get it started, just in this case we used the other dozer to pull it along to get the momentum going!!
Some diesel engines can be started in the wrong direction, if the gear is set in reverse, and the vehicle is pulled forward. Not good. There is no oil pressure, and the dirty exhaust exits through to air filter. Better stop it immediately!

Do you guys just do this for fun, or is this to preserve the engines and drivetrains, so they don't just sit there and rust? Also, where does all the smoke coming from under the hood of the second D8 come from? The intake manifold, or is that just leakage from the exhaust?
Bit of both really, it is a hobby, but it does the machines a world of good to give them a run now and again, gets the oil around the engine and keeps the tracks running freely.
Well spotted on the smoke from under the bonnet on the second D8, it's from the exhaust manifold, the manifold is pretty rusty and there's a few holes in it so not all the smoke is going up the stack!! It's on the list of jobs that need doing, it's just a long list that never seems to end is the problem!!
You got to agree though its a labor of love. Love seing old iron like these and more running.
The pedal are brakes? What about the levers? What are those two big pots at rear?
+RDCST Thanks for the questions, yes the pedal is the brake, the levers operate the steering clutches. When you brake and pull the lever at the same time it only applies the brake to one track so the machine turns left or right depending on which lever you pulled. Hope that makes sense?
The two big pots on the rear is the winch, technically known as the cable control unit, the steel rope can be used to operate a compatible scraper box or it can be used to lift the dozers blade up and down when attached. Everything is hydraulic these days, but before hydraulics became prevalent the dozer blade was lifted up and down using steel rope, besides just fitting the blade a whole gantry has to be fitted so the cable can run from the rear to the front.

+RDCST Glad you got back to us with another question 👍 They are both cable control units, just different designs and yes they do the same job, but I know what you mean they do look different. The machine doing the towing has the two big pots front to front, that cable control unit (ccu) or winch would have been more common on the bigger machines, the Caterpillar D9. The two big pots front to front earned it a nickname with guys in the industry, it was called the "Mae West" winch after the actress who had two rather large assets just like the winch!!!

These old beast are great until you have to work on them, I had to break the track and replace a few of the rollers on the under carrage and fix the tensioner, also had to pull the clutch for repairs, all I have to say is to pull your bootstraps up tight for these, especially if you wring off the 7/8 bolts on the rollers, drilling and tapping upside down is a chore.
+ps,you are certainly rite their ,it’s all heavy work and only gets heavier on the 9s😂
I run an engine machine shop in Regina Sask. Canada. Last week we had a pair of heads in to check over for a customer with a D8H machine. This week we have another customer in to us with his crankshaft and connecting rods for a model D8-2U. The crankshaft had to be pulled due to a failed connecting rod bearing. If I have a chance I may be able to take some video of the crankshaft journals being reground on our crankshaft grinder if anyone is interested in seeing this. I will also be trying to access some parts for this customer. I would be interested in any leads you can share with me on gasket sets, ring sets, rod bearings and pin bushings.

Steering clutches and brakes would make a man out of a boy. We had an early 50's IH TD-18. It started on gas, then switched to diesel when warm enough... NO pony motor!

TD-18 etc. is a way better system. I can't stand the sound of Cat pony motors and they weren't reliable as well....
