Scud Race, hopefully the one you hinted about at the end. My fav Sega arcade racer. A localish arcade has it and my closest arcade has Daytona 2. Why they never released them back in the day I don't know. If they did a Daytona/scud/sega rally arcade bundle for xbox/ps now I would be all over it!
I still can’t believe Daytona USA 2 never got a port on consoles. It seemed like it would have been perfect for a Xbox Live Arcade/PSN release. I suppose it’s never too late to bring to modern consoles, but, I won’t hold my breath on that.
When I released Supermodel in 2011, someone at Sega of Europe got in touch with me to explore doing some Model 3 ports on XBox 360. They sent an NDA and then ghosted me. It was super weird. I think the big problem with these games now is the licensing expense.
@@trzy Hey Bart! I never knew that you'd been contacted by Sega about this, that's really interesting. How bizarre that they just ghosted you afterwards. So bizarre that Sega decided to just totally ignore Daytona USA 2 the whole time they had the license for the first game - it only just got de-listed from XBLA and PSN fairly recently (Can't recall if it was late last year or early this year).
i love how the camera in these arcades racing games is strategically positioned so it always give you an excelent sightline to all the awesome scenery that surrounds the track. 3/5 of the screen is dedicated just for that, with the actual racing taking place on the bottom 2/5.
You forgot to mention Daytona USA 2 having two versions. One is Battle On The Edge which is the the Japanese version in this video. The other is Power Edition, International Version that changes the Beginner track to Nascar speedway and they also added an extra 4th track. Nevertheless, a big shame Sega never even want to port this masterpiece to home console
Randomly, I ponder if the Gradius ship Lord British is a homage to the Ultima creator. The throw into screen animation for the jumping vampires is rather brutal, eyes just pop out, eech. I like the Wampa room, that's where you store your Wampas. That was a cut scene from ESB, where the droids remove a warning label (Danger, Wampa storage, I assume), and some unsuspecting Snowtroopers barge in, I seem to recall.
That's correct. There was a subplot about the Rebels having do deal with Wampas invading their base, and they manage to trap some in a room. When the Empire invades the base, C-3PO rips off a warning label on the door of that room telling people not to enter it. Then some Stormtroopers go into that room and the Wampas kill them. The part with C-3PO ripping the sign off the door is actually in one of the movie trailers.
I recently watched an Ultima documentary for some reason(it helped me fall asleep) and they mentioned this as a fact. The Ultima guy inspired the ship.
Ahem, I believe the technical term is _Wampatorium._ I also wonder about the Lord British connection... I know he's included as a character in the Salamander OAV's.

I played Dancing Eyes in Japan recently and it was a bit different from the version in this vid. The stages had you removing the girls' clothes, not some object they were trapped in. You also got to move the camera and zoom in during the victory screen.
I think that there were at least 2 versions of the game. I played it a couple of times in the arcade and it wasn't quite the same as this video or other videos/screenshots I've seen.

Star Wars Trilogy was my JAM at my local Golf N Stuff back in the day. Sometimes, i didn't play anything else when I went. I was really happy to play it again via emulation
I love to agree. I remember when developers tried to get specific graphic styles to set their games apart from others. And now 95% of games released do look almost the same.
Agree. The arcade is the time when the developers unleashed their fun, bizarre, creative ideas for a game. Sadly, nowadays we are stuck with monotonous games that tried to be realistic

And when are we going to have a part 2 of "Games with awesome music"??? *That series has a heck ton of potential!!* Anyways, thank you so much for keeping the sack going strong Joe.
Joe pays a lot more attention to music and sound than most other creators / (retro) video game reviewers (there's even Sound Sack and all + his own musical endeavours and VGM covers). He even did an entire episode on the worst sounding Genesis games, I would think another episode about actually good video game music would be long overdue by now!
I played Star Wars Trilogy Arcade a lot back in the day and loved it. The original arcade cabinet had a really long analog joysick that made the whole game feel quite satisfying. And it's difficult to explain well but it was easy to get used to the inverted vertical control for the light saber bonus stages because the joystick would put your wrists at a similar angle to the way you'd hold a light saber in real life. Playing the game with little thumbsticks on a joypad, or with a mouse, would make it feel very different. It might be OK with the biggest flight stick you can find.
I *LOVED* that Star Wars Arcade game. I used to play it every time we went to the movies. The light saber parts were pretty fun with the joystick the arcade came with. I think it was more of a remake of the very first Star Wars Arcade rather than the 1993 one. I never played that one tho, looked cool.
Oh man. I didn't spend too much time in arcades when I was younger, but I distinctly remember playing Daytona 2. Hardly anyone talks about it, so I'd forgotten it, or thought it was just a fever dream, lol

Great video as always 😊 If I may suggest something for the 10th video in that series: could you show us briefly what were the controllers for these games, or maybe just an image of the cabinet? That would give us a good idea on how these games were played 😉
Zoom!’s gameplay is actually taken from an old arcade game called Amidar. The primary difference between Qix and Amidar is that Qix allows you to move freely instead of following an existing grid.
Star Wars Trilogy Arcade is one of my favourite arcades of all time, I ended up in a high-score battle on one cabinet in the early 00s with Tom Scott. Inversion was weird, iirc the operator could choose inverted or not separately for flight, shooting, and maybe saber separately. Of course this meant if you walked up to a random cab it might well be backwards from what you expect. The scout troopers could be killed quicker by shooting them rather than their bikes, however that's a smaller target and if you shot them after they fell off you'd go more dark side, which meant you took more damage and got less shield restored between rounds, you can see this happen as Joe shoots Ewoks. One other thing that makes this look harder is that the original cabinet has a huge joystick with massive throw, allowing you to be quite precise.
I'm glad someone has mentioned Solar Assault. I absolutely love playing this at chuck e cheeses back in the day. It had a cockpit seat with a joystick to control and shoot. with a big screen and loud speakers. I was blown away at the time, I wish I could still play it in its arcade cabinet glory. We have an arcade here in Houston that has Star Wars Trilogy arcade, so much fun, though the mentioned inversion when fighting Boba Fett and Darth Vader were frustrating, I could only ever beat Boba Fett, never Darth Vader. Good episode overall!
The top-down, twin-stick tank shmup... I want to say it was called "Assault"... it had great controls and smooth gamplay. I can't say I have ever seen much like it.
The ring in Toy Fighter had more purpose than just passively keeping the two fighters together. You could do an attack that hits the ring directly to move it, briefly staggering the opponent if the ring then hits them. Like a wrestling game, you could also jump onto the ring to perform springboard moves.
Your channel is my favorite. I love these neat arcade games. I hope they make a comeback in the future. I would like to play a motorbike arcade game on an actual motorbike.
What are some games that were left in the arcade you'd like to see covered?

We have an arcade here in Houston that has Star Wars Trilogy arcade, so much fun, though the mentioned inversion when fighting Boba Fett and Darth Vader were frustrating, I could only ever beat Boba Fett, never Darth Vader.
Good episode overall!
WingWar was aaaawesooome!
Ahhhhhh Game Sack, my favorite ASMR. I needed a good nap.
The top-down, twin-stick tank shmup... I want to say it was called "Assault"... it had great controls and smooth gamplay. I can't say I have ever seen much like it.
Assault was the name. Fun game, and I was fascinated with rotation and scaling back in the day, and Assault had that in spades.
