my rough idle and misfires are probably from not doing this, huh! I have used the coils for about a year and I wasn't able to confidently WOT since then. I have been chasing the misfires and the last bit of the puzzle seems to be coming in. Shame on you bimmerlife for not giving me the correct instruction. And thank you Ken for uploading this video. Great info, personally i found i had to file down the red plastic tabs (under the rubber boot you clipped) to get the coil to truly engage the plug with a "click" I had another 5mm to go in depth
@@stevewatson9255 At 3:34 to 3:40 in the video you can see the red tab peaking through the rubber. There is a depression/ring there that looks like a line. Cut the red tab to that line there.
Those coil energy packs look small compared to the Eldor packs that are now available. Wouldn't it make more sense to just get the Eldor energy packs since they are rated up to even the Rolls Royce 600+ hp engines? Eldor part 12138657273 supercedes are previous BMW coils to 2006 and have been shown to be good on N54 boosted to 500+ whp.
Yes, I think they are the 06E-998-115-E coils. I just know they work extremely well. I put a set in my stock shop car for testing and it ran extremely smooth in comparison to the stock coils.
I used the MHD 2+ map with this coil. Cylinder 1 sometimes misfire after a long time of aggressive driving with high temperature at high rpm (around 6500rpm). Does that modification help?
@@wedgeperformance2816 do they seem to last longer than the Bosch I've been lucky with misfire crap myself but always looking for upgrades also do you do remote tunes?
@@nswiss19751 I run them in all my N54 cars and admit it was night and day once installed properly. For custom tuning, please email wedgeperformance@gmail.com for pricing.
Does this effect the output at all? I'm thinking of using these on a Nissan RB25 and was wondering if without the outer cover if they sit lower (they sit pretty high otherwise).
On the BMW n54 the coil doesn't clip to the top of the plug. So clippings them allows you to push them down an extra 1/4 inch to securely attach to the top of the spark plug. On my car without doing this I was getting misfires at about 23 lb of boost. After trimming I had no issues the entire summer running 28 lb of boost

Yes, that needs to be done as per Spoolstreets investigation into the coil not seating. File it off to the 2nd ring from the bottom up.
@@miller330i where abouts do i need to cut the red tab to ? Any measurments or pictures would help dont want to get it wrong

Yeah, Agree. We see good results with the Elder and Delphi coils today.
So if I want to make the switch to these Audi R8 coils, is there a particular brand I should look for?
Eldor
Will this mod work on the s85 v10?
No, BimmerLife only makes the harness for the N54.
Oh I see. You sell the harness only for $300. Or the harness + Coil package for an extra $180, right?

Can fit on n55 engine?
No, talk to Nexsys Motorsports, they have the N55 kit for the B58 coils which is a better option today.
Ken, what do you gap the plugs to? I use the n20 plugs.
I'm running .020 with my car on a 2 step colder plug.
Do you still have to modify the coils even if you buy the entire ($480) kit from bimmerlife?
If you have a stock valve cover, you need to at a minimum clip the tabs so the coil goes all the way in to snap onto the plug.
I was thinking of getting the eldor coils soon but saw this video and now thinking I should get these... what do you recommend?

If you don't clip the tabs and push the coils down on the spark plug, they will arc to the tip of the plug which is wasting energy.
@@WedgePerformance Thank you. I will try.
Gloves bro.
Ikr lmao these things are so sharp
What kind of coils are they Ken
Audi R8 coils. They are used within the BMW N54 engine with the Bimmerlife harness.

BTW, Ken. Do you happen to know how to modify the new revisioned R8 coils? Bimmerlife sent me a part number for the coil, 06E905115F
No, more than likely trim the red tabs and pull the base shield.
Just an FYI....they make these things called "Gloves". You may want to invest in some.
Was too lazy to walk down to the garage to get them. hahah
Why just so they can rip or I get pissed and remove them for better traction
