2022 MG HS +EV Excite review: Mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV ownership just got more affordable!

- Is MG the current leader of the electrified pack?
With a price tag well under $50K drive-away the Excite version the mid-size MG HS +EV brings plug-in electric SUV ownership within range for a whole new batch of buyers.
It's well equipped and offers a long electric-only range, but there are some questions marks hanging over its charge speed and dynamic performance. Question is, does it do enough to convert EV curious buyers, or even detach loyal RAV4 hybrid buyers from the Toyota brand?

I have the Mg Hs and its a great car, great value and is having a great experience with it.
Just a clarification on the regeneration mode. I have an HS PHEV and it has taken a little while to realise that it is variable. By feathering the accelerator pedal, the regen will adapt to both the speed you are traveling and the state of charge of the battery. If the battery is full there is virtually no regen indicated on the screen but after loosing a percentage of charge it will increase up to -12. Also in regards to range, like a ICE vehicle, the right foot dictates economy. Yesterday I managed 70kms in a mix of suburban and freeway driving.
It also seems like ours responds to how quickly you lift off the throttle. For maximum regeneration, lift off abruptly.
The things you don't like about ride and handling makes me want it even more. Love the description you gave on the transmission also 👍
I like the presenter ,very good presentation quite solid mate and very good looking thumbs up!
I have pruis C Toyota .
Bought $10k . amazing car.
Love it 3,9 lt 100 km ❤️❤️❤️
It has more soft touches in the HS especially on the dash land the doors than most cars in that price range , not everything he saids adds up.
Can it handle a Brisbane to Melbourne drive?
I am getting the Haval H6 Hybrid.
Meh not plug in. Pass
So it doesn’t charge when you’re driving like a hybrid? Ie you can run out of battery completely?
Just been driving a HS today and I am impressed. However the inability of the engine to regeneratively charge is a deal breaker for me in Australia. I will often drive long distances in the day. 800k this is essentially petrol only driving in this car!
Very few people would drive the HS like that. Buy a car that suits your use case.
this needs a parallel hybrid with awd set up
Add $10,000 to the price...therefore making it compete with more significant brands. You can't have everything when you're a price leading EV.
How come the lights are flickering while you are driving it looks like there is a short in the front lights
Led lights. The camera recording fps and the electricity freq not align.
@@saauuzza ahhh it all makes sense now.thanks mate
The fuel tank is laughably small at 37 litres
Take the tested fuel consumption from the video, it still gives you almost 900km+ per tank. Which is enough if not good for you.
@@patricklin6177 Thanks for pointing that out. Around 900 kms range is excellent.
@@patricklin6177 A realistic range on a long trip is 550 km. 50 -60 on electric, the balance on petrol.
I'm alway believe in Toyota, so far so good
Man this thing has terrible efficiency on EV only mode, 16.6kwh and only 50km real world, my 2014 leaf has 17kwh usable, city driving i get 120km real world. My boot space is 400 litres and fairly roomy. i almost see no returns on this mg being electric. I plug in at night and usually use 60km a day at 50% cheaper than the mg in pure electric mode. I feel the whole SUV look big style has impacted efficiency with not an actually huge amount of internal room. the leaf is dam ugly but efficient as an ev. i suspect a non plug in mg may offer same TCO over its lifetime.
I suspect that MG's battery management is lopping a chunk of the available energy in order to preserve life. Plus it has an engine and transmission to lug around but to me, this it good because it gets rid of the range anxiety of an EV.
The wheels are too small on this vehicle, it looks like a child’s toy.
This guy is so freaking kissable 🙈🙈🙈
"Self-charging" hybrids - straight out of the Toyota Australia marketing twaddle justifying their refusal to get with the times and technology.
Actually your not necessarily correct. Self charging is critical if you drive long distances in Australia as I do. I will drive 800 k in the day and cross the country 4000k. The Prius gets far better fuel economy than the HS and it regenerates on every down slope. No it doesn't have the pure EV range but the pure EV range on the HS is so short that I cannot visit the shops and drive home again!
Not a very good review. More facts about the vehicle would help.
The CCP has hi 👋
Will this model be built in China or the Solomon Islands ?

@@markuc I've just stopped my Mandarin lesson and finished my lemon chicken to reply to you.
It is clear that this will be like any other Chinese product, which would look good, but only last a few days amd then it will start showing major problems or stop working all together, and so even if they give a 7 years warranty, your car's re-sell value will plummet like the way Boeing plane that fell the from the sky, as if it was a missile and not a plane. I'll stick to the Japanese brands for now, thank you, as they work on quality over quantity. I don't want my car to be like the tofu-dreg projects.
Can you tell me which car you are talking about? Did you own one and have a bad experience?
Yeah it's not clear at all the reviews are the opposite. They're very reliable
I am talking about all Chinese brands in general. People who are saying that this is very reliable, have had the car for 1 to 2 years. Let's wait for their reviews after 5-6 years, or just after 7 years, when the warranty ends. Can they do the 200k km in average(minimum) like all the toyota's do? The new Holdens had the same issue. First 2-3 years, no problem, and then they would breakdown all together, and then it would cost you a fortune to maintain. Now it's extinct. So, wait for it. People are jumping up and down as you are getting more for less. If that's the reason, then iPhones should not sell as they give very little, and only OPPO, Vivo and Xaomi should be selling, but still Apple is the biggest company in the world at the moment.
Let’s wait and see then.
@@avghosh mate Volkswagen is Chinese they're reliable. So is half of GM
