I just leased a 2014 turbo, very impressed. The car is light and you can feel it while accelerating and breaking. The turbo kicks in nicely, impressed my 18 year old nephew on PCH and avoided an accident with smooth breaking. The car is cheap compared to anything else in it's class, $190 less per month than a BMW and the gas mileage is great. The fuel tank is small, smaller than my Accord, but I get more miles per fill-up. The best thing about it, one doesn't see nearly as many as them as a BMW or Lexus, stands out more, I like that.
It looks great in black, wow nice looking rig. I think Caddy needs to make sure the world knows that this car is built on an all new platform...a buddy of mine thought it was a Cruze upgrade which is false. This is all new rear wheel drive. Biggest positive surprise is the sub 6 second 0-60 for the mid level 4 cyl turbo.
The XTS was needed as the flagship model for Cadillac. Every car line has a large flagship model. You should see the interior of the XTS. Every inch of it is covered in imported Italian leather. Even the ceiling is covered in premium Italian suede. The XTS has gone a step backward? It is the most technologically advanced car ever offered to the motoring public ----- regardless of price.
Mr. Wood, Very Good! You really have 'cleaned up your act" around saying 'ah' all of the time, way to go!!! Now, I truly enjoy watching and learning from your reviews, thank you! You are now, in my opinion, one of the best automotive review sites on the web!
@PetarVN I'm 15 and I prefer Cadillac this way because it appeals to younger audiences, like us two. Cadillac never used ETC as a nameplate as I recall. If you want softer land yachts, the closest you are going to get to one is either a Lexus ES, Hyundai Azera, or even a Buick LaCrosse!
Cadillac is world class now. It's resale value is higher than Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Lexus, Acura, Rolls Royce, Infiniti & is tied to first place. The resale value for the Escalade IS number one of all luxury SUVs. The new Cadillac ATS is seeing 70% of its sales coming from German car owners. The Cadillac XTS offers PREMIUM imported Italian leather on both sides of the seats, dashboard, & door panels & the ceiling is covered in Italian suede. It just knocked Lexus off the #1 spot for quality.
thats because the current cts is in the middle ground between the 5 series and the 3 series. not quite as big and not quite as small. the next gen cts coming out soon will be more of a direct 5 series competitior
Check out the XTS Platinum edition. You will forget all about ANY Lexus. Cadillac uses premium Italian leather on BOTH sides of the seats, the dashboard, and door panels PLUS genuine Italian suede graces every inch of the interior ceiling! It is HOT!! Cadillac is WORLD CLASS now.
I was talking performance wise. Don't knock the 4cyl till you drive it. I compared the 4 cyl Mustang to the ATS and loved the ATS. Turbos are changing the game in small cubes.
Il take a v8 over any shit sounding 4 cylinder. I prefer a v8 thats not being pushed over a 4 cylinder that is being boosted up to 16psi to make any good numbers. Do you know what happenens when you put 16psi on a v8? A lot. Yet you only need 6psi and your better off any 4 cylinder and it will always be more reliable because of less stress. Id take a v6 version of these cars over the turbo one just for reliability wise.
@@MrCate1999 I just drove the 2.0t back to back with the 3.6. Sorry but the 4 banger is still just that, a 4 banger. It's a good 4 but it's still angry hamsters over the smooth rush of a V6.
Cadillac ATS offers premium imported Italian leathers whereas the German competition uses chaep plastic and even cheaper vinyl. Real wood is used compared to plastic on the German and Japanese cars too. Cadillac is world class now. Get used to it.
Your 2004 GTO is the best riding car you have ever been in? You don't get out much, do you? Try riding in a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham sometime. After 14 hours of driving, see how you feel then.
Given the choice between flying and driving, I prefer to drive too. I used to fly down to Washington D.C. to do clothes shopping but, most everywhere else I went, I drove. My Grandparents had a 120 acre summer home in Vermont and each day, we'd get into their 1973 Chevrolet and drive for hours to different places. Stock car races each Thursday night at Thunder Road in Barre, Vermont or Catamount Statium in New Hampshire. One Uncle owned H&O Taylor Chevrolet in Wells River, Vermont. He was cool!
By sport transmission do you mean the SMG? I found the automatic to be smooth and kick down quickly. Never drove a manual or SMG so I can't vouch for them but the autobox is great. Did you ever drive an E39? I heard those have the best balance. The E60 and F10 feel like 2 totally different cars other than the badge being the same.
Dude, look at the convo before replying.. I was talking about the Mustang that the other guy brought up. I know the ATS is awesome because I'm looking to get one.
Also I would like to point out, the 3 series looks great, but the lines of the new cadillacs are incredible, it really looks brilliant. I hope the 2014 cts carries on these lines
well if all you can do is pick at the speedometer(lord knows there's an innumerable amount of ways to make a dial with numbers look different right...?) then I'd say they've done a pretty good job.
My 1971 Fleetwood Brogham did 0 - 60 in 7 seconds FLAT! 375 h.p and 535 pounds of torque. They floated down the highway and around corners -- all 5,300 pounds of it -- with EASE! The seats were like the best furniture too. They were true 14 hour highway cruisers.
Well, my car is a two door coupe with bucket seats in the back. Not exactly the first choice for a late night encounter, or any encounter for that matter. Which might explain how the leather rear seats in my now 9 year old car are immaculate.
You must be well under 30 years old then. When I was growing up in the 1970s, everyone we knew took long trips. I still do. When I purchased my Firebird in the 1980s, I put 52,000 miles on it in 8 months. One of my friends put over 100,000 on his Crown Vic in under a year, just joy riding. I still do 600 miles in a day on ocassion so, I know about what makes a car comfortable. I used to go bar hopping in Montreal frequently. It was 396 miles each way. New York each Friday @ 110 miles each way.
Honestly, I don't think any car will be better than the 3 serious b/c no one want to be the first to admit something else is. I think a few years back they compared the 3 series 4door vs the g37 4dr. The g37 beat the 3 in 9 out of ten test but they still have it to the 3 serious by a small margin
Love it - The design, lower weight... Wish they had made the base engine turbocharged too. Something in the range of 200-220hp but with a lot more mid-range torque. Probably it would have been too expensive. As for the 3 series, the 8 speed transmission and the resulting ratio spread really helps the 0-60 time.
AutoGuide - great work. My concerns with "Caddie" are 1. Build quality (as John pointed out below) and 2. Material quality. We won't even get into the workmanship and durability factors. Caddie has made great strides but it still has a way to go. They're not at the point where I'm ready to give up my "Ultimate Driving Machine." Great review tho.
Drive it before you form an opinion! It handles great and quick in the 4 cyl. Agree the manual option (tiptronic style) sucks but not necessary anyways. It has a ridiculious amonut of electronic gadgets which I love!! Picking it up tomorrow in indigo!
A little secret to keeping your leather seats nice. Baby oil. On a hot day, give them a good coating and then, a few hours later, wipe off the excess and the seats are good to go for another 6 months to a year. There is no alcohol in the baby oil so, there is nothing to dry out the leather. I use lavender scented oil.
Well this is a new generation Cadillac you have to remember. The CTS is being revamped for the 2014 model year, which will probably mean a raise in price as well.
I test drove an F10 2011 528i M Sport and I wasn't too impressed. It did ride very smooth and quiet but the handling felt a bit soft and the steering felt a bit too light and lazy compared to BMWs of the past. An older E60 has that unique BMW feel to it, a firm ride without being harsh and still handling super tight, the same can't be said for the newer one.
I am so glad that the Americans are making solid vehicles again! I still believe that Honda and Toyota make the most reliable cars in the world, but stuff like this makes me proud, and even tempts me back into an American car! Good Job GM!!! Great review as always too!!
I agree... why are we always seeing these sedans on the racetrack? Gimme a damn comparison of how well it drives every day and performs normal car duties, then as an aside, how well it performs on the track.
I never said I was a car expert. Like I said, I use to be ignorant and what I knew was mostly based on perception. I never really respected GM that much anyway, but ever since, I have learned some about cars that I didn't know before. I work in the vacuum area, but we're still required to tape up Cadillacs with the third brake light as well as Buick LaCross's and Regals. I don't make the rules, I just follow them. The vechiles are vacuumed, then they go through the wash and then ...
i wish cadillac used the 2.0 liter engine standard. it isnt and exspensive engine as it was in the hhr ss and the cobalt ss in 2008. this kinda makes the buick regal gs redundant too.
Too much glitz in the interior. The chrome running through the console and control panel, and through the steering wheel looks nice, but it creates glare spots. Not good for driving. Why do they need this model when they have the CTS? I don't get it.
I am amazed at how nice american cars are now. I used to only think of owning audis mercedes etc. but now with cars like this and the new fusion coming out, I am definitely stuck in that old mindset anymore.
Well you're correct there. I'm barely legal to drink but how is that relevant. I would love to say that I could do any of those since the sole reason I bought a 6-speed manual V8 is because I genuinely love to drive, but unfortunately the world is a different place now and that really isn't possible for the average person anymore. I also took look trips growing up, the family preferred to drive rather than fly. But as an adult my budget doesn't really permit that. Sad really.
Welcome to the Club! From a german standpoint competition is essential for going on in development and Germany needs the american market.Only a healthy american economy can be a good market. The design of that car might be a turn off for europeans. But its worth to take a closer look at it.
Shows how little you know. Cadillac focused on keeping this car as light as possible and it only weighs about 3,400 lbs, very similar to a BMW 3-Series or an Audi A4--it may even weigh less than those two. As well the suspension on this car is the Magnetic suspension that scans the pavement thousands of time each second and reacts to imperfections to create amazing, world-class handling. And the car has powerful Brembo brakes so you're wrong there too. BOOM, how does it feel to be schooled?
I actually very much like the ATS. I have an E30 325 and I think the current F30 has lost much of what made the 3 Series so great to begin with. The ATS pretty much has a blank slate and should only getter better in future iterations.
I know. The younger people have it tough because of the cost of gas. When I was your age, it was never the cost of the gas that was of any concern but, the pain of stopping to fill up. When I graduated highschool, gas was 59.9 cents a gallon. $20.00 could go a long way. My parents had it even better when they grew up in the 50s with gas at .20 - .25 cents/gallon. My Grandparents bought my Mother a Nash Metropolitan for her birthday. She said the top speed was 80 mph but, $10.00 would go all day!
What a beautiful machine! I always had the stigma of Caddilacs as for old people. They were just luxery with no power but I'm so wrong with the cts-v and now this ats. Cadillacs are building stunning rides, very worthy of it's compettitions.
Cadillac developed the very FIRST night time vision system but, scapped it as the customers didn't like it. As far as the rest of what you mentioned, Cadillac has had or will have it. Without American inventions, your cars would not have: Electric starters, headlights, power windows, locks, brakes, radios, A/Cs, all steel bodies or fully enclosed bodies, automatic transmissions, tinted and safety glass, and the list could go on and on and on and on! Cadillac for the WIN!! :)
What about the turbo lag and the sound of the engine/exhaust? I've heard the v6, does the 2.0t suck in that regard? Which is the better car for everyday street, not track?
Cadillac is in the top 5 when it comes to reliability and safety. Materials? While BMW and Mercedes offer cheap plastic and vinyl as standard, Cadillac offers imported Italian leather on both sides of the seats, door panels, and dashboard. Italian suede covers every inch of the ceiling in the XTS Platinum Edition too. $1,200.00/year, on average, for insurance with the Cadillac while the insurance for the BMW will set you back $2,900.00/year as BMW's parts are up to 4 TIMES more expensive.
The new 3 series is hideous inside and out. What were they thinking? This Cadillac ATS is a very nice design. I cant wait till the ATS-V comes out and mops the floor with the competition.
After all these years both Lexus & Cadillac are now trying to mimic the same steps as its competitors BMW, Audi & Infiniti which among all rivals are one of the most sports oriented manufacturers in the industry. Cadillac is trying to pursue a sportier image but even so, it has such a long way to go before it can even become a prime alterntative to its more established competitors like the 335i, G37 or S4.
Wait, I thought you were sticking up for our cars? Not all cars these days are uncomfortable. I drive an '04 GTO that albeit is 9 years old now and is actually Australian not American, but it's one of the most comfortable well riding cars I've been in.
By the way, the Eldorado of 1971 had 400 h.p. and 535 pounds of torque and the Fleetwood with that engine choice had a trailer towing capacity of 7,000 pounds. No car being built today, ANYWHERE in the world, can say the same thing.
It's rated at 345 and 500, actually. But what does any of that matter in that car? It NEEDED that much power just to drive at highway speeds. The things were boats.
The CTS-V already beat the M3 when it first came out even though it was a bigger car. The M3's gotten faster since then but this ATS weighs almost nothing. With an LS3 and GM's magnetic ride it should be insanely quick.
Why race track? Because it's up against "The Ultimate Driving Machine" and that's not based only on what it can do on the street. Luxury car makers love to express how much of a performance vehicle their car is, and that image is what makes these entry level luxury models sell. They may not be track day cars, but it's quite simple - whichever car passes the performance test on a track wins.
Ha...You must have not seen the new C63 AMG it's mad in the corners and rides like a rock even on it's softest setting... The great thing about the ATS is you can make it ride ultra soft like a big Cadillac or nice and tight for hard corners... Wait for the ATS-V which is likely to be getting some of new toys from the new C7 Corvette so it will be at least as powerful as the AMG while being about 200lbs lighter and thus faster
Haha I know.... I love cadillac escalade. But i dont understand 2.0T and 2.5L... cadillac might as well just use 2.0T and not even bother to make 2.5L if turbo is so much better
I've always bought European cars, but this ATS looks mighty impressive. I hope they kicked it up a notch with the interior materials and build quality. I would love to see the Americans take down the smug Germans a peg or two! I look forward to test driving it.
yeah Toyota s and Honda's are crazy reliable my friends Honda accord has over 450 clicks on it and still running...I cant think of any other car that can last that long
No, it wasnt the SMG. Those were only offered on the M3 and M5/M6. This was a sport automatic. It was an additional $500 and came with paddles. It sucked. I have never driven the E39, But I love the E39 M5. what a car.
You have to remember, that GM owns Opel. That is where some of their platforms come from. So, every Opel you saw on the road, was really a GM product, although European designed and built. Germans overwhelmingly buy German. And the same goes for the other countries over in Europe. They support their own. We need to do a better job of that here. I kinda like the car. I might strongly consider. Besides, we can't even run cars hard enough to tell much difference anyway...
Now that is a good looking car. The person in charge of this design deserves a raise. Having said that I prefer smaller cars. This car should sell like hotcakes.
That has to be one of the sexiest cars I have ever seen! The interior is AWESOME! The red leather is gorgeous!

My grandmother has a Seville (I think) and at the 80 to 100 MPH she tended to drive it was like gliding on ice. Absolutely smooth.
Mr. Wood, Very Good! You really have 'cleaned up your act" around saying 'ah' all of the time, way to go!!! Now, I truly enjoy watching and learning from your reviews, thank you! You are now, in my opinion, one of the best automotive review sites on the web!
Why does this video stop about 40 sec. in ? All I get is the image of the rear where the 3,6 badge is . . then loading, loading. WTH ????
I intern a few miles from one of the factory that makes these in Michigan. I see little size difference between this car and the current gen CTS.
@PetarVN I'm 15 and I prefer Cadillac this way because it appeals to younger audiences, like us two. Cadillac never used ETC as a nameplate as I recall. If you want softer land yachts, the closest you are going to get to one is either a Lexus ES, Hyundai Azera, or even a Buick LaCrosse!
... It use to not be that obvious becasue I was more ignorant about cars, but I've learned much since working at the car wash my friend.
Hey 2021 here, I found one of these for 8k should I get it
Miles ?
Not really. Unless you get a CTS-V, this car costs more than a premium CTS when you option it out.

cadillacs , mustangs with 4cylinders....the end is coming

Hey Autoguide, which camera did you use for the movie... simply superb!!!!
Did the cts-v really beat the m5 on the nurburgring?
I doubt it is better or even competes with the 3 series . gm has been trying to do this for over 20 years and has failed everytime!

@nightbird dude they test for racetrack if u want to do all those things go to a dealership have a test drive on the rode. Thank you.
What is wrong with having a car that is comfortable AND fast too?
I test drove an F10 2011 528i M Sport and I wasn't too impressed. Yup.. I'd actually take this over the new 3 Series. That deep red interior is gorgeous.
Once thing for sure... its more stylish then the 3 series inside and out. Good job caddy... now im just waiting to see the 2013 Lexus IS

Numbers don't speak anything if you don't have the Beamer side by side. Do a drag or track race and we'll see how good the car is
This car is just flat out fantastic.... Good Job Cadillac!

So does Cadillac. They offer 4 years maintenance,
What a beautiful machine!
With the 2.5 liter, 23 city- 34 highway.
With the 2.0 liter turbo, 22 city- 32 highway
With the 3.6 liter, 18 city- 28 highway
Google Cadillac Europe. They even have a website. They do sell them in Europe....
What about the turbo lag and the sound of the engine/exhaust? I've heard the v6, does the 2.0t suck in that regard? Which is the better car for everyday street, not track?
what about the magnetic ride man?
This is the car that will make Cadillac. Really sweet and beautifully built. Now they just need a station wagon version . . .
: )
I'm always trying to improve. Glad you noticed.
I really want the new Lexus IS, but unsure about this one. =S
My mistake. I meant the 1970 Eldorado. 400 h.p. and 535 pounds of torque.
They were NO slouches when it came to speed either.
What a totally objective review, unbiased in any way, shape or form lol
I take it that you don't take many vacations where driving for long periods of time is required.
Not compared to the competition. Get a base 3 series, add one feature, and the price is over 45k.
Why would my name make me bias of anything?? What would it be biased of?
Ha...You must have not seen the new C63 AMG it's mad in the corners and rides like a rock even on it's softest setting... The great thing about the ATS is you can make it ride ultra soft like a big Cadillac or nice and tight for hard corners... Wait for the ATS-V which is likely to be getting some of new toys from the new C7 Corvette so it will be at least as powerful as the AMG while being about 200lbs lighter and thus faster
How about the Evo?
Not sure how reliable a turbo is going to be from GM.
I look forward to test driving it.
you can do it cadillac. i believe in you.
yeah Toyota s and Honda's are crazy reliable my friends Honda accord has over 450 clicks on it and still running...I cant think of any other car that can last that long
No, it wasnt the SMG. Those were only offered on the M3 and M5/M6. This was a sport automatic. It was an additional $500 and came with paddles. It sucked. I have never driven the E39, But I love the E39 M5. what a car.
um.... Cadillac, what's the point of 2.5L?
You have to remember, that GM owns Opel. That is where some of their platforms come from. So, every Opel you saw on the road, was really a GM product, although European designed and built.
Germans overwhelmingly buy German. And the same goes for the other countries over in Europe. They support their own. We need to do a better job of that here. I kinda like the car. I might strongly consider. Besides, we can't even run cars hard enough to tell much difference anyway...
Now that is a good looking car. The person in charge of this design deserves a raise. Having said that I prefer smaller cars. This car should sell like hotcakes.
Price not being an issue, which do you prefer? The 2.0T or the V6? Could you also tell me why?
