    The Battle of Clontarf (Irish: Cath Chluain Tarbh) took place on 23 April 1014 at Clontarf, near Dublin, on the east coast of Ireland. It pitted an army led by Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, against a Norse-Irish alliance comprising the forces of Sigtrygg Silkbeard, King of Dublin; Máel Mórda mac Murchada, King of Leinster; and a Viking army from abroad led by Sigurd of Orkney and Brodir of Mann. It lasted from sunrise to sunset, and ended in a rout of the Viking and Leinster armies.

    A battle that lasted from daylight to dusk, this would not have been one long continuous battle but a series of engagements with parts of the army withdrawing back to rest and recover before re-engaging in combat again. The loss of so much leadership, indicates that they aroused and lead their men back into combat after yet another engagement. This made them vulnerable to dying.

    I’m not Irish or Scandinavian, but I do enjoy this era of history.
    I have found after doing a little research, that the Vikings seem to have lost A LOT of battles against the Irish!
    Those Norseman were certainly brave to keep going back there, because there was no mercy if they found themselves on the wrong side of a clash, and having to retreat 30 km back to one of their fortified towns, all the while being harassed and picked apart by the swarming, enraged Gaels.

    Nice to see but wholly inaccurate. Brian Boru was in his 70's at the time, wasn't on the battlefield at all by most accounts. It was a long drawn out battle, with many, many smaller skirmishes occurring across the county, city etc. The slaughtering and drowning of the "foreigners" in the high tide occurred also as they retreated. Many things happened that day that are not represented here but any reference to Irish history is a bonus!

    It’s always good to see a battle where the defenders protect their homes and families. The invaders can just run back to their ships, meanwhile if the defenders retreat, they may have no home to go back to afterwards.

      Les Grecs et les 300 où les Perses perdirent beaucoup de soldats mais à la fin ce sont les PERSES qui gagnent la bataille des THERMOPILES.
      Ou enconre à la Bataille de TALAS en 751 où les ARABES avec 40 000 guerriers battirent l armèe Chinoise forte de 200 000 soit 5 fois superieure en nombre.

    In truth though, there are those, including experts in viking history, who believe the battle was more a draw than a total victory for Brian boru's forces. The reason presumeably being that the vikings continued to rule in Dublin after the battle and the viking king of Dublin, Sitric, remained as king of the city for over twenty years after the battle. Let us not also forget that there were Irish and vikings fighting on both sides so, strictly speaking, it was not a purely Irish v viking battle.

    • @Paddy234
      @Paddy234 4 месяца назад +3

      That is not true about it being a draw. Despite the Norse having a 50% numerical advantage over the Irish they lost. This battle reduced Dublin to become a lesser Kingdom and it led to Dublin being conquered decades later by the King of Leinster. This battle led to the entire downfall of Norse presence in Ireland which had to he removed by force

    • @Dhdh-cf3mb
      @Dhdh-cf3mb 3 месяца назад +2

      That's not one bit true
      Viking rule ended dublin was sacked by Brian's sons all viking nobles were killed 5 norse royals killed even the viking throne was screwed which is why Brian boru declared himself king of northern Europe before he was cowardly killed
      Moat of the dublin County was sacked all towns around dublin were emptied.

    • @justinneill5003
      @justinneill5003 13 дней назад

      I doubt if a battle that ended in a complete rout, with heavy losses to both sides but with significantly greater losses to the enemy, can be described as a "draw." As to the aftermath, whilst it is true that Viking power in Dublin was not eliminated, it was reduced to a lesser power which paved the way for the capture of Dublin in 1052 by the King of Leinster, asserting Irish overlordship over the Norse of Ireland.

      They do look a little over dimensioned, no argument there. But maybe it isn't that far from it either. The largest viking ship found so far is a little over 37 m long and 3.5-4 meters at the widest point. With a depth of 1 meter into the water. It could carry around 100 men, and some of them are said to be able to carry up to 120 tons of cargo. That would take quite a ship.

    • @Do-not-be-sheep
      @Do-not-be-sheep 11 месяцев назад

      @@phunkeehone You're correct but those super sized, long boats were rare and built by Kings or powerful Earls as their personal warship. One of the things not discussed very often is the fragility of long boats. They were designed as coastal raiders crossing the open ocean carried very high risks. An example was the crossing of the first settlers from Iceland to Greenland - more than half the ships were lost along the way. The sagas are full of stories of long boats lost at sea due to sea worms and rough seas. It required enormous courage to get into a long boat for an open ocean voyage.

    I didn't know about this great battle and victory of Irish men! Great! But at is seems in the video. No tactics, just braveness! Was-it the reality?

      It was agreed it would be an old-style battle based on ancient "Doorpost" battling, which involved opposing champions and their followers seeking each other out in toe-to-toe combat. Although the Vikings lost, such was their high regard for the battle that Normans who could claim an ancestor in the battle were automatically granted the status of nobility.

    Once, upon time, Ireland had a King?

    • @Dhdh-cf3mb
      @Dhdh-cf3mb 3 месяца назад

      Ireland has had up to 12 high King's
      None have ever controlled all of ireland
      There has been hundreds of kings like kindoms in Ireland a high king is declared by a strong clan then it Leeds to war for the title which nobody ever won
      Last high king of ireland was Rory o conner (but again didn't own all of ireland since normans owned parts )after Brian boru

      Irish king ship is not like monarchy or anything like other European countries
      Irish Royal doesn't exist in reality we might look at the boru line as Royal but that's just because he won a war
      Irish law is brehon law a celtic form of laws which states no man is better than another man and kings will only be crowned by his subjects there's no such thing as a blood right or gods right like in uk where the king is crowned by God
      This is also the reason all irish families have a crest or banner no matter how poor brehon law makes it possible for the weakest family to become to top by winning wars since it was a warrior society

    아시아국가에서 국가의 존망을 결정하는 군대간의 전쟁은 보통 30만~100만의 군대의 싸움인데 유럽쪽은 소박하다...이들이 고대 북동아시아와 인접하지 않은것은 천운이다.

      No. A Viking longboat was to the images in the video as a Boeing 737 is to a C-5 Galaxy transport.

    Почему ирландцы позволили викингам беспрепятственно высадиться с кораблей?!
    Это большая ошибка! Надо было встречать и жечь их еще на подступах к берегу.
    Сомневаюсь в авторской версии, это же так логично.

      Irish were already engaged with leinster armies from the river. Also majority of the army was light infantry not much range when it comes to irish armies
      The fighting went on for 24 hours and ended in every viking leader captured and killed
