The Battle of Clontarf (Irish: Cath Chluain Tarbh) took place on 23 April 1014 at Clontarf, near Dublin, on the east coast of Ireland. It pitted an army led by Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, against a Norse-Irish alliance comprising the forces of Sigtrygg Silkbeard, King of Dublin; Máel Mórda mac Murchada, King of Leinster; and a Viking army from abroad led by Sigurd of Orkney and Brodir of Mann. It lasted from sunrise to sunset, and ended in a rout of the Viking and Leinster armies.

How dare those Vikings try to invade Ireland 🇮🇪
The glorious Brain Boru!
We are of Viking blood, in Ireland.
The Vikings founded the first cities in Ireland
Foreigners invading Dublin. Doesn’t this still happen to this day?

I Live in Clontarf. A promenade in front of the sea has various points that show where the battle took place. Fascinating to see it come to life. Well done on the incredible detail, the music and the narrative, I really enjoy your videos!
Thanks buddy

Excellent presentation!👍
Many thanks for your attention to detail and the long hours to produce this video! 👏👍
A battle that lasted from daylight to dusk, this would not have been one long continuous battle but a series of engagements with parts of the army withdrawing back to rest and recover before re-engaging in combat again. The loss of so much leadership, indicates that they aroused and lead their men back into combat after yet another engagement. This made them vulnerable to dying.
When the vikings finally retreated the tide had come in and their ships were far out to sea. There was a lot of fighting on the beaches and fighting spread out in many directions, the battle descended into more chaos than it had already been
Brian Boru. The man himself.
Narrator: It was very loud and exceptionally bloody
Ok... How bloody are we talking about- HOLY HECK THAT'S BLOODY!
Father Jack Hackett "feck ,arse ,gobshite, drink"
When he said very loud I imagine them trashtalking while fighting, lol
I’m not Irish or Scandinavian, but I do enjoy this era of history.
I have found after doing a little research, that the Vikings seem to have lost A LOT of battles against the Irish!
Those Norseman were certainly brave to keep going back there, because there was no mercy if they found themselves on the wrong side of a clash, and having to retreat 30 km back to one of their fortified towns, all the while being harassed and picked apart by the swarming, enraged Gaels.
Nice to see but wholly inaccurate. Brian Boru was in his 70's at the time, wasn't on the battlefield at all by most accounts. It was a long drawn out battle, with many, many smaller skirmishes occurring across the county, city etc. The slaughtering and drowning of the "foreigners" in the high tide occurred also as they retreated. Many things happened that day that are not represented here but any reference to Irish history is a bonus!
Yeah this took place all over the county not just clontarf the main engagement wasn't even in clontarf
All his sons were sent to plunder settlements like Donnchad who was ordered to sack leinster
The last Celtic Country.
I'm not Irish but long live Ireland
It’s always good to see a battle where the defenders protect their homes and families. The invaders can just run back to their ships, meanwhile if the defenders retreat, they may have no home to go back to afterwards.

Great video, loved it, Brian Borou was actually in his late 70s at that time.
Nice!
He was in his early 70's, around 73.
This was great! Excellent music choices and historical narrative. Loved every minute of this. Ty for sharing this important piece of history.

Looks great, but aren't the Viking ships kind of big?
Irish Celtic Shields were mainly long oval in shape, but did use round shields as well.🇮🇪☘🇮🇪☘🇮🇪☘
In truth though, there are those, including experts in viking history, who believe the battle was more a draw than a total victory for Brian boru's forces. The reason presumeably being that the vikings continued to rule in Dublin after the battle and the viking king of Dublin, Sitric, remained as king of the city for over twenty years after the battle. Let us not also forget that there were Irish and vikings fighting on both sides so, strictly speaking, it was not a purely Irish v viking battle.
That is not true about it being a draw. Despite the Norse having a 50% numerical advantage over the Irish they lost. This battle reduced Dublin to become a lesser Kingdom and it led to Dublin being conquered decades later by the King of Leinster. This battle led to the entire downfall of Norse presence in Ireland which had to he removed by force
That's not one bit true
Viking rule ended dublin was sacked by Brian's sons all viking nobles were killed 5 norse royals killed even the viking throne was screwed which is why Brian boru declared himself king of northern Europe before he was cowardly killed
Moat of the dublin County was sacked all towns around dublin were emptied.
I doubt if a battle that ended in a complete rout, with heavy losses to both sides but with significantly greater losses to the enemy, can be described as a "draw." As to the aftermath, whilst it is true that Viking power in Dublin was not eliminated, it was reduced to a lesser power which paved the way for the capture of Dublin in 1052 by the King of Leinster, asserting Irish overlordship over the Norse of Ireland.
great cinematic battle, your videos are getting better and better !
(out of pure curiosity, i was wondering; it's a very recurrent thing in your videos, why do you censor "beheading animations"? )

This fight went on for 12 hours
Brian boru had 4900 men against 7000 thousand
The invaders lost 6000 men.
Brian boru was stabbed in his tent by a retreating Norse soldier. That soldier was later found and hung with his intestines
I wonder if the Irish hounds also made an impact ?
Great job! Although missed the single dual between Donald of Mar and Platt of Danemark that opened the battle.
Have to remember , the Scottish contribution to the battle.

Having a pint with the Irish who fought for Sitric. After all, it was a friendly match.

Probably the worst things I dislike about these gaming simulations are that no matter what the situation is, everyone always has their weapons out, along with the pointless "yar'ing" and gesturing.
Brilliant vid!
With equal Norse and Irish dna ...I’ll sit this one out 😊
👍 epic
🔥🔥
its estimated 600.000 people lived in ireland at that time
The Viking longboats size has been wildly exaggerated.
song?
Что-то я сомневаюсь чтобы у викингов были такие крупные дракары. Да и количество армии я думаю было раз в десять меньше.
Greetings from Dublin .. this was not a viking raid ... but an attempt by the Dublin norse to stop the Irish high king Brian Boru .. the numbers look ridiculous but its estimated 15 to maybe 20 thousand were involved .. most of the Irish tribes were involved that day in 1014
The narrator butchers the irish names. But irish names and placenames don't sound how they are spelled..
Very well done.
Thank you! Cheers!
How big are viking ships supposed to be ? They had small boats. These look like trading vessels.
They also have big enough boats the largest found was 38 metres
This was a fleet that landed in Dublin they would have been around 28 30 metres and hundreds of them came.
I prefer this animation to the Viking series with actors.
So, apparently, at this point, although there were p[lenty of spears, there was no use of archers?

You're the best bro.
youtube says this is Medieval 2 but it definitely doesnt look like it??
If you think about it, it would have been even bloodier then this. Im talking RIVERS of blood and intestines, brains and vicera all over the place. Medieval combat was ridiculous to think about. Legs and arms hacked off, decapitations, getting run through with spears, dieing by gettint shot up doesnt seem so bad
Who let the dogs out?
The ships are way way too big!
They do look a little over dimensioned, no argument there. But maybe it isn't that far from it either. The largest viking ship found so far is a little over 37 m long and 3.5-4 meters at the widest point. With a depth of 1 meter into the water. It could carry around 100 men, and some of them are said to be able to carry up to 120 tons of cargo. That would take quite a ship.
@@phunkeehone You're correct but those super sized, long boats were rare and built by Kings or powerful Earls as their personal warship. One of the things not discussed very often is the fragility of long boats. They were designed as coastal raiders crossing the open ocean carried very high risks. An example was the crossing of the first settlers from Iceland to Greenland - more than half the ships were lost along the way. The sagas are full of stories of long boats lost at sea due to sea worms and rough seas. It required enormous courage to get into a long boat for an open ocean voyage.
Not big enough if you were a Viking trying to get on one on the way home
I didn't know about this great battle and victory of Irish men! Great! But at is seems in the video. No tactics, just braveness! Was-it the reality?
Gloire à l'Irlande
It was agreed it would be an old-style battle based on ancient "Doorpost" battling, which involved opposing champions and their followers seeking each other out in toe-to-toe combat. Although the Vikings lost, such was their high regard for the battle that Normans who could claim an ancestor in the battle were automatically granted the status of nobility.
Man trifft sich zum Schlachten, unglaublich. Und heute ist das auch nicht anders, leider.
Ships look too big.
Perhaps you ought to study the dimensions of the longboats ......
Once, upon time, Ireland had a King?
Ireland has had up to 12 high King's
None have ever controlled all of ireland
There has been hundreds of kings like kindoms in Ireland a high king is declared by a strong clan then it Leeds to war for the title which nobody ever won
Last high king of ireland was Rory o conner (but again didn't own all of ireland since normans owned parts )after Brian boru
Irish king ship is not like monarchy or anything like other European countries
Irish Royal doesn't exist in reality we might look at the boru line as Royal but that's just because he won a war
Irish law is brehon law a celtic form of laws which states no man is better than another man and kings will only be crowned by his subjects there's no such thing as a blood right or gods right like in uk where the king is crowned by God
This is also the reason all irish families have a crest or banner no matter how poor brehon law makes it possible for the weakest family to become to top by winning wars since it was a warrior society
What's the song?
