    What a unique craft Medtner had!
    The more of his work that I hear, the more I understand Rachmaninov's complete awe and respect for Medtner.

      Rachmaninoff considered his friend's music stupendously fine (the pair of them were certainly a 'mutual admiration society'), but he died before he could know anything very much about this concerto. The Medtners left London during the War at the invitation of a musical family by the name of Iles to stay in the small Warwickshire village of Wootton Wawen; the daughter Edna was an aspiring and already highly able concert pianist perhaps the invitation was her idea but in any event Medtner worked on and finished this concerto there in the rural surroundings of the area around Stratford. Edna Iles later performed this concerto and there are impressive recordings of her readings of Medtner's music which must be considered authoritative as she studied them in detail with the composer.

    LOVE Sudbin on this. In fact, I love all of his Medtner. It's a good take in a sea of recordings that don't quite reach.

      Yes!! And for the concertos they usually have such amazing clarity in the orchestral playing as well, especially this one and the second, with the north carolina symphony

      For this concerto prefer Kholodenko, but Sudbin is also so great!

    The most unrecognized work of ofcmusical art would be like someone not recognizing a MichaelAngelo

    anyone else feel like this music ls basically a passacaglia

    • @AJAdkins99
      @AJAdkins99 2 месяца назад +1

      It is not a passacaglia although it does heavily rely on the repetition and development of some well defined themes

      Well, the 3rd movement is in sonata form, but the first movement is something between passacaglia and variation form indeed. But it's very nebulous in fact, because in Medtner, thematic work is everywhere, literally everywhere and it's ingenious!
