Had a 1990 Troop with the 4 cylinder and 5 speed. Great vehicle, slow as can be but dead reliable configuration. The V6 with auto is another story. There is a guy who rebuilds those trannies and became well known on forums and FB page due to common failure.
The transmission definitely seems like the weakest link. It ended up shifting a lot better after the drain and fill. I’ve put about 1000 miles on it since. According to the manual you’re supposed to service these every 60 thousand miles. I’m sure that wasn’t done!
