Even though Yamaha had a water cooled 250 for 1982 most racers opted to use the air cooled 81 motor in the new frame because of the poor handling and reliability of the radiator on the handlebars.....look closely and you can see the air cooled heads on Bells and Glover’s bikes, and no radiator on the bars. Yamaha fixed this for 1983 and they were a much improved machine.

My 1982 YZ250 was water cooled. Nah nah na na nahh nahh.
I bought the 1982 CR250R and my buddy bought a 1982 Rm250Z.
EarthSurferUSA I still have one, and a 1982 yz125, and an ‘83 yz250......all restored and very rideable.
YZ's were also the first to have a rear monoshock
