Linda, I’ve learned so much from you. I now have all of my viburnums and a lilac bush trimmed up in the “Vater” style. Then I tackled my crab apple tree , which had a habit of branching heavily low to the ground. It looks so much better! And as a bonus, I no longer get the branches tangled up in my hair while I work in the bed beneath it. 😆 Then I found a small boxwood that I planted awhile back that is perfect for trimming into a topiary. I am constantly scanning my beds to see if there is something I can prune. Thank you, and keep the videos coming! 💐
Just did this to my snowball bush! Watching my husband carry the branches to the road for city pick up tomorrow. I am eyeing the weigela bushes now. You made me feel quite confident that I'm doing the right thing. Thank you.
Oh my goodness, there are a zillion gardening sites and I will never be able to express my appreciate adequately for yours. :-) Just today I found your site and have learned SO, SO much about my Weigela and my perennials. I can't thank you enough and I will definitely be back and often. :-)
I did some of that yesterday with my Gabriel's trumpets, they were taking over, with plans to do more pruning tomorrow with a butterfly bush that is smothering out the flowers beneath it. A silver lining if you will, for most of us staying home so much this year, a lot of maintain gardens out there.
I pruned my weigela like this exactly, but it was before I found your channel and more out of necessity. It's too large a shrub for the spot it's in and tries to engulf a fire hydrant. Controlling the overall size was too challenging b/c it would grow right back. I googled around and got the idea to make it more tree-like, controlling the size at the base and letting it grow as tall as it likes - and here you have confirmed what I already did! I removed excess and sideways growing trunks and trim up the canopy and it looks so much better.
Hi Linda great video today. Love seeing shrubs pruned like this. My weigela as had the same amount of cutting back to. your a lady after my own heart. keep pruning
In the spring, I planted three Wine & Roses weigela against the front of the house. They are bushes right now, have flowered, but I would like to shape like the one you have next year. First time seeing a shaped weigela, which I really like. I live in Michigan, I think zone 4.
God bless you for crawling under your shrub!can’t do that anymore, I have to hire a person to help me in the garden. I can still do limbing up of trees and shrubs, love doing it too🌿
Love to see how you prune your shrubs. I enjoy doing the exact type of pruning. It really shows the beauty of the plant after a serious pruning. I just got a young weigela plant. Even though it says full sun, someone suggests to have some afternoon shade for zone 7 and 8. As I am in zone 8, I wonder if you have any shade for this lovely weigela of yours. Thank you in advance for your reply before I plant mine to the ground!!! Enjoyed it! Thanks again!
@@LindaVater , thank you! Unfortunately my main flower bed area is under full sun, not much afternoon shade. I have to rethink where to plant it. Thanks again!
Hi Linda, I'm sure you probably mentioned the name of your weigela but could you remind us. Great job on the pruning, love watching you work in the garden. Very therapeutic. X
We moved to a little house in Texas that had a hedge of something that was taking over a fence., in my younger days. I got the electric, hedge clippers out, and within 2 hours, you could see ALL the architecture of the plants and fence🤣🤣🤣
Hello Linda! I am new to your channel and I have to say love garden you have going! Give me lots of ideas! I do have a question for you tho. I'm trying to look back at all of your videos and I have noticed that you have no roses in you garden.. are you all about the greens? Roses are not your thing?
I have a weigela I’d love to do this too! How long did it take to get that form? I worry about the snow we get in zone 5b breaking it. Do you have to deal with that where you are?
This is the first time I’ve watched you prune and knew where you were headed before you moved to the branch. 😆 Also, where did you get your boots, they’re a must have!!!
Hi Linda, thank you for the video. I am wondering whether you limb up your tree/ shrubs such as the Weigela, when they are just starts or do you wait until the shrub puts on a lot of mature growth?
Linda thank you so much for answering my questions. Melbourne Australia is in complete lockdown and I'm stuck indoors, your chanel is providing with with so much hope for Spring. I can't wait to try out some of your topiary ideas in my own garden. ❤
How many years old is the weigelia [I think that's the name you called it] you are trimming today? Do you remember the size it was when you planted it. How fast do they grow?
HELP!!! I'm a newbie and I planted my crepe myrtle in the wrong place in front of a bedroom window We can't keep the thing cut down low enough What do you suggest that I plant there instead.
Does anyone know the name of another weigela that Linda has...the shrub is larger than this weigela, is trimmed up, has chartreuse/ lime colored leaves and hot pink blooms?
Do you have a bleeding heart??? What can I do with one that is over grown....I have always cut it back to the ground when it turns yellow and flops in July...it just grows back and it so giganic and looks good only in the early part of June. Help!!

I have a couple, but as my garden has gotten more shady not as many. I still have 4 mostly David Austin’s. :)

Just realised you did name the weigela in this video 😁 I'm going to invest in a Bristol Ruby Weigela. X
Good bless Linda
You and I have the same mine set. If it's growing in the wrong place, it's a weed.
If I didn't have things to prune or trim, I think I would have landed in federal prison by now. It's SO stress-reducing!
Take it out Linda. You will be happier!
Do you have a bleeding heart???

They can be divided
I’m scared to death for snakes I don’t care what kind they are. However I’d never have one in my blocked type fence
I live in a urban garden here in NY & discovered I have poison ivy. It was a very unpleasant discovery.
Nice haircut :-))) for you and the weigela :-)))
You forgot to sterilize your pruners before going on !
I know!😱 Just realized it when I watched it back. Thankfully this shrub isn’t prone to spider mite :-).
