    Remember, what they’re saying about Zbrush is that it makes A LOT of these things easier. You basically get a program worth the money you pay.
    It’s not to say you CANT do this stuff in different ways in other programs, it’s just Zbrush is able to do a lot of the stuff A LOT easier.
    I wish I could use Zbrush, but I can’t currently justify the cost, but I’ve learned that it’s not about the program, it’s about the artist. You may get MORE tools to use and cool tools to use, but you’re limited by your knowledge and artistic eye. I’ve learned that although it’s a little clunky, I can get some great results in Blender(though I agree, it’s not optimized for CRAZY detail, but you can do similar with normal maps and can even still bake high resolution). It’s definitely more clunky and not as easy as Zbrush, but just for you newbs out there, you don’t HAVE to shy away from sculpting because you can’t afford Zbrush yet.
    With that being said, no matter what software, you could make some awesome art if you know where and how the tools are used. You could have an AMAZING artist and an inexperienced artist, and the inexperienced artist will always struggle, no matter HOW many tools you give them.
    I hope you guys understand what I mean :)

      svi_graphics thank ya! People need to learn that you’re not limited by software always, just by your artistic knowledge.
      In college, when I took music production, my professor made us do like two projects of manipulating multitrack audio files IN AUDACITY. Anyone who knows music or audio knows that audacity is best for quick tracks and ideas and pitch manipulation, not a WHOLE project.
      The project wasn’t an involved song or anything, but the lesson was to work with limitations before you start using the expensive, and fully featured software. You learn more by finding alternatives to a thing you need that may not be as easy in another software :)
      Happy 3Ding man! And I think Zbrush is definitely on my future purchases list at some point ;)

    My immediate impression of ZBrush a couple of weeks ago was that it was and is yet another program that has too much legacy baggage in it, like Photoshop, for example. In peculiar similarity, both are often used for things they weren't originally designed for (from photo editing to digital painting in the latter, although this has somewhat dropped off in the advent of more available competition). This might be conspiracy theorist thinking, but a lot of these software packages have always felt like they were being "developed" by a group of senior staffers, collecting their fat checks, that just don't want to change anything at all, let alone listen to anyone daring to have to relearn everything just for their programs.
    There's a malicious sort of "encoding" that happens when you learn software. The user is forced to learn how the devs want them to interact with their software, and the more buried the menus are, the more vague the UI is, the more encoding is done on the user to have to stick with that piece of software for a lengthy period of time, otherwise be damned to forgetting all the unnecessary complication, crypticness, or laziness. So, we all get locked into them and their production/profit cycles.
    I sincerely hope that Blender's sculpting can become as performant as ZBrush's. It's one the major areas of art creation that could seriously bridge that "industry standard" gap. I found it to be really enjoyable to sculpt in Blender, but my machine started to chug fairly early on into sculpts. I jumped to ZBrush, got over its annoying quirks, and am creating fairly decent things with a lot of headroom left for high res detailing. If blender could do tens of millions of "polygons", I wouldn't even be considering ZBrush.

  • @jinchoung
    @jinchoung 4 года назад +10

    zbrush feels like a 3d program that was made by someone who's never used a 3d program before... totally re-invented the wheel without any consideration of what came before. the fact that it started off as a "2.5d" program still haunts the program today even though in terms of industry usage, NOBODY cares about the 2.5d stuff.
    my personal wish list for zb would be:
    - ability to hide menu items. there are SO MANY LEGACY TOOLS that is, AT BEST, ESOTERIC! it was esoteric for sure when it was introduced, it's probably far into CRYPTIC now.
    - different tabs for different workflows. zbrush does so many things now and they're all crammed into the same workspace that makes it confusing as hell. zmodeler should be a different tab. that thing where you create by masking the profiles - that should be a separate tab. polypainting should be a separate tab. 2.5d should be a separate tab! and you can flip tabs to your hearts content with no lag... it just organizes the tools (and brushes) so that you're not looking at EVERYTHING at once all the time.
    - option to make dropping the tool impossible. it still happens. it still bugs the shit out of me.
    - spend less time adding and spend more time SUBTRACTING legacy features or at least obscuring them so they don't clutter up the interface. soooooo many tools need to be deprecated.
    so much that's good. so much insanity tho.
    the worst thing about that for me is that i DON'T get to spend all my time in front of zb. i wish i could. but i can't. that means that because of how alien zb's interface is, everytime i drop back in to do a quick fix or detail up or something, my brain has to spend the first few minutes recovering from GUI related PTSD.

      It grew from a matte painting program that was pixols (pixels with depth aka 2.5d) that added the ability to add 3d models to the paintings, then manipulate the models for textureing, then sculpting was done using the depth projected back onto the models verts. Now we have a 2.5d painting tool that's primary use is sculpting. Try to think I'm drawing on a window but what I draw changes one of the thing im looking at. It makes more sense if you give making tileable textures tutorials a try.

    • @opilonic6097
      @opilonic6097 4 года назад +5

      I started using Zbrush maybe a half a year after starting to learn Blender (2013 I think). I was really thinking that 3D isn't my thing, until I tried Zbrush and it clicked in so many levels. An the main reason was the UI, believe me or not; only stylus, not even having to use the buttons in it. (there is a small mutiny going on in zbrush community about ppl using the stylus button for zooming, but they will never prevail! :D)
      "ZBrush is for Artists" is a really good slogan for them from the UI design perspective as well. More tech oriented minds (or long time veterans of more traditional programs) seems to have trouble with it, but the for me the "holy shift+ctrl+alt trinity" plus stylus (and your hotkeys) just makes it's super fast to use.
      I think trouble is that many don't mind customizing the UI for their use, as it's intended, because some things sure are in strange places! (Like "Mirror" and "Mirror and Weld" buttons! :D)

    • @opilonic6097
      @opilonic6097 4 года назад

      And sure lots of thing have to do with it starting as a 2.5d program, but I think the more decisive ideology behind the UI is that you don't need any stylus buttons to use it AND you can fully customize where thing are situated and hotkey every function. I personally hope they will never change to the route of "Other" programs people are referring to. (Whatever that even means?)

    With all the changes Pablo Debarro is making to the sculpting branch of Blender, is Z brush still worth it? Also what makes Z brush unique from blenders methods. It looks like it retains detail as if dynotopo is on but without loosing the quads, as if there are several muliresolution layers and it chooses which one to manipulate based on the size of the brush while also dynamically changing the topology of each resolution to best approximate the shape.

    • @ZalvaTionZ
      @ZalvaTionZ 4 года назад

      I need to decimate zbrush projects to oblivion to even import them fully to blender. It's not unusual to go upwards of 150 mil vertices in zbrush. Even if the viewport and edit performance would support stuff like that in blender, the ram usage is way higher. It's just not possible to work with like that in 2.8 currently.
      You can change between subdivision to sculpt in zbrush. Multires in blender is broken atm. You can work around the performance difference if you do stylized stuff or you would do small details through materials, but if you need them as actual geometry you simply can't do it in blender at the same detail level.

    • @dickybird6916
      @dickybird6916 4 года назад +1

      It's not just about the poly/vert counts but the way you manipulate them. Zbrush was originally designed as a matte painting tool with the ability to paint depth that slowly gained 3d model insertion then manipulation tools. it's that foundation that gave zbrush its use for both sculpting models and making textures and not just textures for models but for tileable textures for environments. even tools substance mari and quixel can't 100% replace zbrush for original texture work and zbrush cant replace what they do either, they work together. As a Blender user since 2002/3 its a great tool for the pipeline but they all have a place in your asset creation workflow. blender can do a lot but can't do everything as good as tools designed for the job. Not everything's a hammer but all tools can be used as a hammer, some are less effective than others.

    • @FlippedNormals
      @FlippedNormals  4 года назад

      Yes, ZBrush will be relevant for a long time. What Pablo is doing is amazing, but keep in mind that there's been a team of developers on ZBrush for 20 years. It's still FAR ahead.

      I use Zspheres a lot to sketch poses or simple skeletons and I like it better than using a basemesh.

    I remember trying Zbrush years ago and realized very quickly what a horrible program it was to work with.
    Zbrush proponents simply dismiss UI complaints as being the result of laziness when in actual fact, it harms users who are forced to ingrain this non-conventional method of doing things while working with other software that have more logical workflows.
    When Mudbox was introduced to the world at large after being bought out by Autodesk, there was a collective sigh of relief across the 3D industry that at long last, a worthy competitor, backed by an industry giant, had finally arrived to save us all from a nightmarish UI.
    Mudbox was a refreshing experience; intuitive interface with excellent go-between connectivity with Maya and 3dsmax. I loved its concept of “stenciling” that allowed the adoption of Photoshop brushes. It was also much faster than Zbrush as it used your GPU as its primary means of acceleration whereas Zbrush was CPU bound. Heck, even an OSX version was released for Mac users.
    So, what the hell happened? Mudbox development simply went dark. The version releases that followed were incredibly minor - no new innovative tools whatsoever. Actually, they didn’t even need to innovate; all they really had to do was copy Zbrush feature for feature and included them within a well-thought out UI.
    Rumor had it that Autodesk was trying to fully implement sculpting into Maya itself using the Mudbox code base but were unable to do so, wasting years of precious development time that could have otherwise been used to play catch up.
    I think it is more likely the case that due to the fact that Zbrush continued to release update after update without charging users for 15+ years on, it was deemed impossible to convince those Zbrush users to give Mudbox a second look - especially since not charging for major releases flies in the face of the capitalistic tendencies of any large corporation.
    Either way, Mudbox was quietly left in a state of neglect and now remains only as a what-could-have-been program. It’s a shame. Its success as a viable competitor would have benefited both Mudbox and Zbrush users alike.

      Look up Julian Kaspar and Yansculpts. Those are two examples of people who make AMAZING things in blender sculpting.
      It’s not about the software, it’s about the artist. You can get some decent stuff, it’s just that Zbrush has a lot more choices of tools, but if you know blender, you could find other ways of doing the same things.
      Blender just gets a little slow as you get a lot more polygons, but it’s pretty good for a free program. You basically get a program worth your money if you buy Zbrush, with its features and optimization.
      But yea blender’s biggest strength is it has a decent amount of features FOR FREE. Some may be clunkier than other software, sometimes not as optimized, but it doesn’t mean you can’t get around the flaws.

    I just don't understand why Pixologic is so reluctant to fix ZBrush's ridiculous UI, not to mention silly concepts like "documents" and "pixols". So much of ZBrush's weirdness is just garbage leftover from a time (many years ago) when sculpting was not its primary focus.

    I think young Artists should never touch Zbrush or any sculpting until they learn proper poly modeling, i see everyboy jumping to sculpting first while not having a solid understanding of what makes models work, Sculpting is easy especially if you have the understanding of Anatomy, Character Design..etc but if your modeling skills suck everything else will fall apart & Studios still look for good 3d modelers more than 3d sculpters if you didn't know :).

    • @SVI_graphics
      @SVI_graphics 4 года назад +1

      I don't think so. People should start with what motivates them the most, so they can learn more. I started las year using Zbrush and I love to sculpt, If i had started with traditional 3D modeling I would quit 3D as i didn't like it. I can learn retopology and traditional modelling now that I love sculpting. Learning traditional 3D modeling is not that complicated, but learning anatomy and character design could be very difficult.

      ALGHOTTE that’s like saying ‘cyclists should never ride a bike until they fully learn how to make one from scratch’. Using Zbrush even as a beginner is a good idea, if you want to get better you have to learn the UI as well as putting the practice in to sculpting anatomy or hard surface assets. It’s the same with digital painting, you have to learn how to use Photoshop, Krita, Procreate etc... while doing your daily studies on it.

    • @z_tiger311
      @z_tiger311 4 года назад

      that's wrong analogy cyclists condition themselves first before doing any real cycling & most of them start with very small steps because when you're starting out, you don't even know what's verts, edges,normals, topology..etc are & jumping to sculpting will bite you in the butt in the future. not only that it will take you even longer to get good at it, this advice was given to me by a top 3d Artist from ILM & after a long time not carring about it ,now i understand it, so take it or leave it.

      A normal is the direction a surface faces. Flipped normals refers to surfaces facing the wrong direction (aka a back face). Its like looking at a two way mirror, you want to see the reflection side but your on the side that you can see through, now think that mirror is part of some guy's head and you can see the wall behind him through his cheek.
