@@colindong7316 If Edward would have been allowed to remain King he could have reigned for 20-30 even 40 years. Upon his death his brother, if still alive, would have taken the throne. By the time it came to Elizabeth she could have been in her 60's and only reigned for 20-30 years.
She was in her 40's when they married, which impeded them having kids no mater if he was King or not. In fact I believe that was another reason she was considered an unsuitable match for him.

You did a great job explaining a complicated situation. I think Edward used Wallis to hide from the responsibility of the monarchy, and later the British establishment politely used Wallis to distance themselves from the former king, who was a Nazi German sympathizer intent of getting them on the "wrong" side of the war.
Remember the history of the royal family is German and their bloodline is German. In later years, it was strategically changed to Mountbatten and Windsor, specifically to allow people to think they were of English blood - and not German blood.
I think it’s a stretch to say her was a nazi sympathizer when I think it is closer to say he was a pacifist buffoon who did not have the sense or imagination to see the nazi party for what it was. Especially since we are talking about the party in the late 30s…. Not that he shouldn’t have seen it.

Wallace didn’t want to marry Edward. She actually liked being married to her second husband. It was her social climbing inclinations and ambitious personality that lead her to pursue the future king. Wallace basically saw Edward as a means to and end. She expected to be remunerated and socially rewarded by her temporary association with Edward.

I am 76 and although i was not alive at the time of the abdication, it was still a ''hot' topic' and Wallace was reviled and hated throughout the UK and beyond. We were taught about this 'treachery' in school and had to write compositions about traitors to The Crown,....in pen and ink !
However, at least Wallace had the good sense to keep her mouth shut. They went quietly, sunk into oblivion and by comparison to Markle, Wallace was a saint..
I suspect that Harry is feeling the effects of his particular exile...Edward, it is reported, kept a replica of The Crown and wore it on occasions when he entertained his guests, alhough I doubt if any reference to the RF is allowed in the Markle household..

Wallis provided the ‘excuse’ he wanted to get out of doing ‘kingey things’, his words, as he wasn’t interested in the pomp & circumstance of Royal life. The fact he left Govt papers’ lying around Fort Belvedere where he lived, was one proof of this. Wallis allegedly had an affair with von Ribentrop, a high-ranking Nazi, & who knows what UK official secrets’ she read in these papers, was ‘pillow talk’ for her. Also it was concerning that the Germans’ knew of the Allies war plans for France, & the person in charge of information between the Allies, was MAJGEN David Windsor.

I never knew the real story between Edward and Wallis. Here in Italy it is regarded as a great love story, but then I began to read about it and I learned it wasn't. I was appalled to say the least. God save your King Charles III, I honestly hope he is happy, and you Brits with him.

Great summary, Pluto. Actually, Wallis was an heiress who was disinherited by her uncle (I think) when she refused to give up her first husband, who was deemed inappropriate. Another big difference between TW and Wallis was that Wallis was a fashion icon and always immaculately turned out, unlike the ever disheveled Z list actress.
Her first husband was an abusive alcoholic. A war time pilot who treated her terribly. I can't imagine staying with a cruel alcoholic just for financial stability.

I have seen the documentary regarding Wallis' letters, yet I cannot see her as the victim. If anything, she contributed to her fate knowingly and willingly. But people tend to forget as time passes and paint people who are no longer among us in more favourable colours. The difference for me was that Wallis was really intelligent as opposed to MM who foolishly tries to pass her shrewdness as actual intelligence. Wallis also had an impeccable fashion sense - she knew how to dress for the little that she had naturally, as I believe she was described in that same documentary as having the same amount of attraction as an old boot. One who plays with fire will get burnt. So, I agree that the cases are by far not one and the same, but Wallis never was the victim, if anything she was manipulative just the same. Her game just caught up to her.
I too have seen that documentary. The one photo/video that stuck with me, was when Wallis curtseyed to Hitler. That sealed her fate.

There is always the danger of projecting modern sensibilities upon history. There can be no real understanding when we do that. It was a different time, a different class and different social mores.
Wallis was no more nor less manipulative than any other woman of her social set. She didn't slither up the greasy pole. She "came out" at the Baltimore Debutante Ball in 1914 and moved in the first circles of society. Her parents didn't have money, but her grandfather did, as well as a place in society. He paid for her education at an elite private school, financing and including her in high society .
It's worth noting that Edward and Wallis had come of age during the Roaring 20's, when anything went. Hedonism was the name of the game. Aristocrats, in particular, lived a sybaritic life. The rules were different amongst these people and strictly adhered to, if they expected to be "received".
What is forgotten is, in aristocratic circles, for centuries, being mistress to the king or heir (Bertie, later Edward VII, comes to mind) was accepted and husbands were generally complacent. There were benefits and a cachet attached. These women were feted and powerful. When they were replaced with a younger model they retained their place in society (and their husbands). There was never any question of them becoming queen and I don't believe Wallis ever had that ambition either.
Wallis wasn't a victim, in modern parlance, but she was left with little choice, in the eyes of that world, when Edward broke the rules that governed that world, and insisted upon marrying her, even threatening suicide if she wouldn't. She was damned if she did and damned if she didn't.

I also watched the ‘letters’ documentary some years ago and also saw Wallis in an entirely different light. I agree with you entirely, basically Wallis was a social climber and enjoyed having her cake and eating it. The most obvious difference being … Wallis never (publicly at least) and frequently trashed the RF!
The Windsors were dependent on the royals for money - they received an annual amt from the royals so they had to behave and not offend the royals, Harry has his own money so can't be controlled.

I’m from the Uk & sixty years old so I grew up knowing a lot about this & read extensively about it . I remember when she died in the 80s they had an auction of her fabulous jewellery, and we went around for a year wearing copies of her panther and peacock broaches, which were all the rage along with our shoulder pads! I commented because I want to tell you what a fabulous job you did presenting all this so well. You are a remarkable young woman and am sure you have a very bright future ❤️

Yes, those fabulous jewelry went on a world tour. I went to the exhibition here in Cape Town and still have the brochure with all the descriptions. It was breathtaking to see all those diamonds and other jewels, a good memory (I'm 62 ;) )

Another major way these 2 American divorcees differed was in their style. Wallis had impeccable taste and an eye for detail that led to her always choosing fashions wisely, based on her figure and making sure everything she wore was tailored to perfection. Her hair and makeup were also always on point. Meghan on the other hand, as a working royal, always appeared as though she got dressed out of hamper, no matter how eye wateringly expensive her wardrobe was, she managed to look cheap in everything. Everything was either wrinkled or not sized correctly, being too big or too small. When she would wear something that looked great, she would either not be wearing the right underwear/bra or her hair would like crap. Her signature hairstyle seemed to be a messy bun.

I understand from various biographies that the Queen Mother did a lot of manipulation behind the scenes at this time. Like Wallis, she was a steely social climber, and once she got wind of the fact that Edward might actually abdicate pushed events that would encourage him to do so. (Probably along the lines of ensuring Wallis and Edward's affair was publicised, and forcing Edward to choose whether to give her up or not.)
The story that the Queen Mother never wanted her husband to be king is part of the 'fairytale' we've been sold. She certainly did. She had a huge influence over her husband, but more than that she knew the monarchy could not survive Edward's reign once his political leanings became more well known.
I find the parallels between Wallis and Camilla just as interesting. By all accounts, Camilla adored her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles, and was content to remain Charles' mistress. And like his uncle, Charles insisted on marrying his mistress too.

Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon did not need to be a social climber! Look at her lineage and the power her family already had. Yes, she was formidable, but she was no social climber....she had no need to be. I think you need to read some actual history books instead of gossip.

I find Wallis' handwriting very unique and representative of her (very, very comparable to Princess Diana) whereas Meghan's is so contrived. Wallis also wrote with 'authenticity' and did not use word salad, like Meghan did with the letter to her father. Also, while Wallis was not a classic beauty (however extremely interesting and had a wicket sense of humor), Meghan relies on her looks to get what she wants. It did not seem that Wallis was truly in love with Edward and didn't try to fake it, whereas Meghan constantly reminds us of her amazing 'love story' with Harry. She cannot talk about it enough.

Wallis never spoke against the Monarchy. She maintained a healthy respect for Edwards family and never lied about the reasons they left. I don't think she was particularly happy with her lot in life but she was faithful to her husband until the end. She had class. Meghan, not so much. You look so beautiful today!♥️
wallis was NOT faithful to the duke--she had a blatent affair with a notoriuos gay man who was barbara hutton s cousin. and she offered to sleep with her dear friend s husband but he refused her--this was only days before she married the duke. when this man became a widower she tried to sabotage his next wedding--at one point she approached the bride and told her that her new husband was the only man that she,wallis had ever loved. the bride responded "how nice that is for the duke". there were also whispers of an affair with the german ambassador in london as well as a car salesman. before the duke she had an affair with mussolini s son-in--law and got pregnant. wallis really got around--her first husband would lock her in the bathroom when he went out alone in the evening

Edward's abdication made way for his brother to be King, George VI (the subject of the movie The King's Speech.) During World War II, he became the symbol of courage and fortitude to the British people. Praise God for him! And he gave us his daughter who became Britain's longest-serving monarch, Elizabeth the Great! So it could be said that the American divorcee did Britain a great favour after all! 😄
What about MM? Has she done anything good for Britain? I suppose it is to expose the weakness of the one who used to be spare and make the British grateful that William is the heir, and that his Queen to be is not like her or Wallis. God works in mysterious ways!

Most upperclass marriages were not love matches but family business deals as had been for decades before. So, after an heir is born, the woman is free to have lovers. Yes, they were social climbers but so was every one else in those circles so calling them manipulators is , I feel somewhat in error. Wallace was nothing like Megan, and was forced to marry a man-child who threatened Suicide if she didn’t. The government used her as the scapegoat to get rid of a king who was a danger to England. Both Wallace and her ex-husband realized too late that, they truly respected and deeply cared for each other. That is so sad. Wallace had class, a wicked sense of humor and perfect tailoring. She never trashed the Royalty and was always respectful. She treated him in the only way she could . Edward was a petty, boring , lazy slug of a man who did not want the burden of reigning only the perks. He also had a sadistic cold side, so her cruelty was a sexual turn on to him. To been shackled to such a useless man would have been hell on a Woman known for her intelligence and wit. She suffered from Dementia as well as I’ll health, and those who cared for her remarked how the only thing she remembered was the foolish mistake of becoming a mistress of a King and how it caused the loss of Ernest, how sorry she was to cause him such pain and that someday he would forgive her. Ernest was the last memory , her mind held onto and to whom she would speak of. That, is True Abiding Love. Her character has been so slandered against, yes mistakes were made that cost her dearly in the end, however, the Royal Family and the government were most content to make her the Scarlet Woman that ruined a King. What a joke. They knew they had to rid themselves of an inept king with little intelligence, character or the ability to rule. Edward’s Obsession with Wallace was the means to an end making them look righteous. Yes, they needed to get rid of him is a given. Since they could not execute him , as what might have happened in the past, put him in an asylum, the Government would have had to face public opinion favourable to Edward and figure out a way to deal with the Crisis. It would have been very difficult to do so but for Wallace. In damaging her life and reputation publicly, it was a easy solution Edward gave them. If not for Wallace Simpson, England may very well gone pro- Hitler, and the War- a very different outcome for us today. The Crisis of Edward’s love for Hitler was averted and a better man was crowned King who gave us a Queen with Outstanding devotion to Service and Duty to her dying day. A new King whose closeness to nature was laughed at as a Prince, now shown how these ideas can work to better this World. His son, a man of many Skills, Intelligent, Compassionate and determined to make his Life Count. This, thanks to Woman whose mistakes cost her Love and Contentment, used by forces beyond her control and still reviled today. Had I been Wallace shackled to such a man, I would have poisoned him. It is to her credit she refrained from freeing herself and stayed to make him suffer in what ever small way she could.
I’m really appreciating your channel, your commentary is always so well informed. I’ve seen that documentary about Wallace too, it was an eye opener and actually made me feel sorry for her. It also confirms what a lucky escape Britain had. I can’t imagine he would have made a good king, particularly during the war.
Agree, particularly enjoyed this excellent video. Edward would have been a disastrous King. Allegedly he encouraged Hitler to heavily bomb London and force the UK into submission, so Edward could return as King, with Wallis as his Queen.

Another huge difference between the Windsors and Sussexes is the Windsors would visit America and be A+++ listers as they were in France and everyone wanted to see them and be seen with them. Wallis never tried to peddle jam. She just dripped with jewels and was inpeccably dressed and known as a style icon! She was cotour perfection.

After reading Anne Seba's book "That Woman: The Life of Wallis Simpson" I believe that Wallis never expected to be queen; she simply wanted to continue being Edward's mistress, with all the perks. She would've fled to return to the US, but had not expected that the breakout of WWII would cause the King to place her under close guard. Another main thing that made Wallis different from Meghan is that Wallis never openly attacked the monarchy.
Did she need a guard in Baltimore? Apparently MEghan needs a few in Hollywood.
Wallis wasn't given the opportunity to. After the abdication, the British press and the Americans too to a certain extent wouldn't dare approach her or her husband out of respect and support for the new King and Queen, George VI and Elizabeth. In fact, they weren't formally interviewed until the late 60s.

I have always felt that Wallace wanted to be queen, and when Edward abdicated, she freaked and wanted away from him, but she had already gotten herself in too deep, and her exhusband had moved on. She was stuck. I think she had zero respect for Edward, and abused him. And for whatever sick reason, he ate up the abuse. Edward never wanted to be king in the first place, and was very Ill equipped for the position, so Wallace was his escape hatch to get out of it.
His name WAS David - he took the name King Edward. Just as Elizabeth was asked before her coronation, by what name she wished to be crowned and she said "Elizabeth of course", and didn't use another Regal name which she felt would be a misnomer.
I also love history - I avidly read about topics of interest to me. I love that someone as young as you feels equally interested. I find English history particularly compelling, not just about royalty, but about the ancient buildings too. The time and effort (and skill) it took to construct these amazing structures really consumes me and I research whenever I can.

If you love history so much you doubtless know that the Duke of Windsor's full name was Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David. In the family he was called David.
One of Harry names is David which I find slightly disturbing under the circumstances
His last name was David but his first name was Edward. All the family called him David.

Thank you for this very good video. Like you , I was ( still am) a history buff and being born in 1950 I lived through this mess when Wallace and Edward were going through this. In my world of family and friends at the time we all thought after the initial shock of him giving up the throne...the rest of their lives were just a big bore.

One thing we know for sure. Wallis did the monarchy and all of Britain a favor getting weak minded, selfish David to abdicate in favor of George VI, who was of much higher character and in turn put Elizabeth II on the throne.

A major fact to note is that Edward was not really interested in being the king as everyone assumes one would be. In that case he 'used' Wallis as part of his excuse to avoid that heavy responsibility. I do not think based on all I have read, that we can assume they were not happy. I think they did not expect to be so excluded from royal life, and became close over the years in their social lives and interests. I agree. He liked the title, but not the work that went with it. I doubt that if he had really talked of his love of what Hitler was doing that he would have remained king. There is always the stories that he was told to abdicate or be removed because he was loving a bit too much of what Hitler was chatting up in Europe.

I just came across an item, where they say that the parents , George and Mary, were very poor parents, and their attitude and behaviour with their children may have contributed to George vi's stammer, and Edward's character.

This is why I think Harry took Diana's death harder than Wills. Maybe he wasn't feeling the love. 4 yrs can be a huge difference between a 12 yr old and a 16 yr old. Can be more of a f'd up factor. Still not defending his choice of MEghan.

There’s an excellent documentary, available on RUclips, that covers this exact topic of Wallis’s letters. I saw it months ago and it changed my perception of Wallis completely.
I'm older and remember Wally being called a Grand Dame in french by the french it was high praise indeed. She looked very genteel, high class in every way. Her home was decorated exquisitely as she dressed. Impeccable taste for one of her background.

the duke and duchess of windsor both admired hitler--were traitors to britain during WW11 and the duke still spoke glowingly of hitler after the war--and at many dinner parties in france he insisted in speaking german which he said was his mother tongue. in his youth he spent most of his summers in germany with the kaiser s relatives
I did enjoy this so much! Thank you. I knew that they weren't particularly happy but you put it together very nicely. One can imagine poor Wallis without the king in her 40s, twice divorced, the king's ex-mistress seemingly tossed aside had she left him. She would have had nothing in the 1930s. I understand that they didn't have much of a life together. They were "jet setters" and I recall seeing them in the press quite a bit in the 60s. It couldn't have been much of a life. The Duke had no job essentially - he played a lot of golf. Plus I've read that they would stay at various "friends" mansions and holiday homes for extended lengths of time sponging off their hosts who were supposed to be grateful for the prestige of letting them play hosts to the ex king and Duchess. Anyway, it must have been quite an empty life. I don't think much of Edward who seemed to have no back bone. He liked a good time but didn't like the work. That sounds familiar...Thanks again! I am obsessed with the royal history as well, especially the women who play a part in it and having watched so many documentaries about Wallis and David, your version of the story was well made and I think you are spot on. I find it sad that pple chase fame and being a part of the the so called high society to a point where it takes over their lives. The funny thing is that it never ends well for them. So sad. Throughout the history some women lost their lives over this (Anne boleyn for instance) so sad

I loved this video. The letters were only recently discovered and put paid to this fallacy that Edward and Wallis were a great love. They weren’t. She was bored and irritated by Edward for the rest of her life. My great aunt met them both and found her fowl and Edward pathetic. You should look at Edward’s relationship with his mother Queen Mary. She was a great Queen, but not such a great mother. George V was an absolute bully to his children. There was also a very unfortunate start to Edward’s life, where his nanny was obsessed with him and every time he was presented to his parents, he was pinched by his nanny making him cry so he associated seeing his parents with an unpleasant event and emotion.
wallis was in love with edward the King--she did not love edward the man!! he had promised to make her queen of england and failed to do it--she spent the rest of her life resenting him for this fact--she never let him forget how he had failed her
How interesting all this is…. When you think about it, what will Harry do after burning out in lies, how will he earn his crust to keep up with his wife, it’s not going to end well
Dreadfully sad and explains his emotional confusion and for Wallace's treatment of him. He was attracted to pushy bossiness which he loved. He was not without empathy, compassion or intelligence. As Prince, he wanted to change the circumstances of men who could not find work and were suffering. he was ahead of his time. Wallace was his obsession and downfall.

I saw a video during which Wallace's letters to Ernest were read and made clear she had no wish to marry Edward. It truly was a game she and Ernest played which ran amuck. This was a terrible game to play but made an interesting story out of their lives.....

I agree with your opinions, I have followed The King that threw away his Crown for Mrs. Simpson stories. I always go back and try to look for the reasons why she did or not did certain things, and still married George Vlll, certainly it would be a very long conversation. I believe that after all the letters from Wallis to Ernest it’s difficult to believe that real love was the only reason for her marriage to the little Prince.

I have learned more about Wallis Simpson in 20 minutes than I ever did in my 25 years of living.
This is a very good video, concise and as far as I know from watching documentaries etc accurate. I think it is true to say “be careful what you wish for”. My dear father is nearly 94 years old and remembers all of the shenanigans in as much as he remembers what his family had to say about it. He says that us Brits were gutted that they lost him and everyone blamed Mrs Simpson. I would say, however, that it takes two to tango. He undoubtedly was a traitor to the Crown and the country and she was just on the make, Not unlike our latest traitor and his missus. We’ll have to wait and see what happens but imo everything the traitor and his wife do goes wrong so I live in hope for a happy ending ie she is history and he lives in solitude never to bother us again🇬🇧 God Save our Dear King ❤
Others in the royal family supported the German leadership in the 'thirties including, Princess Alice of Athlone who was the daughter of the Duke of Albany a son of Queen Victoria, she was married to Queen Mary's brother Prince Alexander of Teck. The whole family was German. David was a scapegoat.
I knew about those letters she wrote to Ernest. There was a programme on BBC Radio 4 several yrs ago about them. Wallis never wanted to marry Edward. It was all a stupid game, of sorts (echoes of Meghan?) They had a horrible life together. She had lots of affairs. She & Edward must've had a very strange relationship. There was a very good drama (also on BBC Radio 4) about a yr ago. In the drama, the Noel Coward character makes the comment "The only difference between me & Him (Edward) is I'm queer but don't pretend I'm not". I'm sure the BBC would've got it's facts straight before that was broadcast. Just a thought.

yes, noel coward really did say this about the duke. in the early 1950s wallis was supposedly having a very public relationship with jimmy donahue who was blatently gay--at this time there were people who whispered that it was really the duke carrying on with donahue and that wallis was covering for them. this association went on for 4 yrs until donahue became physically abusive to the duchess and the duke finally kicked jimmy out. when jimmy died he left the duchess a little over $300,000--a massive amount in those days

I don't believe in "soulmates" and know is possible to love more than one person. But when you marry, and vow to forsake all others, you pledge to love just one. Apparently Wallis did not understand this, or did not take her vows seriously. I have no sympathy for that weak woman, or for any who do not value the sanctity of marriage. The MM/Harry story will not end well, either, but they are both adults who created their own destiny.

Well said! Society would be so much better today if people waited to marry a person they could stay true to. If you haven't known the person long enough to see how they are with their family, friends, work acquaintances and traumatic occurrences, you may have ugly revelations in marriage.
Its called the King's Prerogative. David told Ernest he must have Wallis in a private meeting of the two men. Ernest was reluctant to separate from her but was paid off.

You did a brilliant job on your research. I’ve done extensive research into this couple. I remember when she died in France, a recluse, nobody wanting to be near her. It’s very true that she wanted to get out of the relationship but stayed because he threatened suicide if she left. It is amazing. what history details are uncovered through the letters she wrote to others. And he really thought that he would be forgiven and be allowed back into England to live with her there. But Queen Elizabeth and her mother would have none of it. What a gross misjudgment on his part …. anyway well done for your research.
Yep and MM I think claimed she'd committ suicide if H. didn't leave, but I don't truly believe MM was suicidal based on her behaviors and actions.

Wallis had some aristocratic English ancestry. She was a Southern aristocrat herself. She could be a good friend and gracious, tactful hostess. Wallis also had some style; her interior decoration had "the Wallis Windsor touch" and was admired.

I’ve just recently read her autobiography ‘The heart has it’s reasons’. I think there are more similarities with Edward and Harry.
Read a book about Wallis ....she very much wanted to become Queen and was extremely disappointed when she found that wasn't going to happen

Left feeling very sorry indeed for Wallis. Her little game with Edward backfired and from belonging to a real man who she realised she loved, she got suck with an overgrown child and had to live out her life in a marriage that must have been suffocating, infuriating and misery-inducing. She's reported as having treated him badly at times but I would imagine that the sheer frustration of having to endure decades with him as her ball and chain, would drive any woman to distraction.
