The Mori and the Date as well. Both of Mori and Date ancestors are believed to have been from the Fujiwara clan, one of the clans you can play alongside Taira and Minamoto in ROTS, and both of Mori and Date descendants still exist hundreds of years later as the Choshu and Sendai domains, and IRL all of them along with Shimazu’s descendants still exist today. So yeah, there are three clans you can play through their whole history of lol.
Actually, this had a lot to do with history, as they were arguably the first to have contact with the Portuguese. As a result, they were also the first to actually use firearms in battle, particularly with their tendency to lure opponents into ambushes.
If I had to chose my Favorite purely because of Clan Traits, I would Pick Chosokabe. And even though their might be considered easy because of there starting position, I hate there starting position for a reason that truly makes no since.
I don't disagree with you on that, the big reason I don't like there starting position is that you have to Navel invade your way off the island. So lets say you have like 3-4 units in all of your towns on the island, your enemies does a navel invasion with a full stack. You have basically no way to deal with it if they have a strong Navy because you have to use your Navy to get back on the island. They should have made it so you could walk onto the small island from the main Island of Japan. And you should be able too because of how little see there is between the small Island to the east of Shikoku and the main Island of Japan.
Dylan Calvert well what I have done is that I usually ally myself with the Shimazu in the long campaign. I recruit ashigarus to protect the castles from those unlikely invasions and send one or two armies to attack the Hatakeyama lands next to Awaji... it has worked for me tho
I played as Oda first because I was a great fan of the game Nobunaga's Ambition: Iron Triangle, when I learned to play Shogun 2 well enough I learned how good the Shimazu and Takeda were
***** i actually won a campaign because of you, i learned from your tatics and builds! Any help is a lesson learned for me (im new AND bad at strategy games...)
Combined some practice and your tipps about army building for this clan and I did it, I finally won my first Shogun 2 campaign. Japan is mine! Thanks a lot for the help bud, keep making great content like that please :)
Shimazu one of more interesting clans due to position and history ends up as' they are good with swords' while Otomo get christianity and guns just 2 years after Portuguese shipwrecked(if I remember starting date is in 1545?) on Tanegashima(owned by Shimazu's retainer). Oh well not the firs nor the last time CA pulled that kind of a stunt.
One thing that's interesting about the Shimazu is that it is incredibly easy to get Warrior Nuns, as compared to other clans -- even the Ikko Ikki and especially the Uesugi. The biggest problem with Warrior Nuns is that you need to have access to Incense to build the required monastery upgrade. Fortunately, the Shimazu start right next to the only 2 sources of Incense in the game. You'll probably want to have a lot of Buddhist temples anyway as the Shimazu as a means of dealing with the Otomo (unless you convert to Christianity, obviously).
I didn't really want to convert to Christianity, but I did anyway because I wanted those trade ships. Nanban trade port made sense lore wise also and, well, I would have bothered me if it remained unupgraded.
Going Christian with the Shimazu is pretty good. You get the Nanban Quarter and then as you take over your starting island, you can get a second in the Otomo starting province. Two of those is nice.
Oh yes.....early access to matchlock ashigaru. They rarely kill a lot, except in defensive sieges, but the effect they have on charging enemy morale is super useful. PLUS....5 experienced missionaries inciting revolts in provinces you want to conquer, (pair them with a ninja to sabotage the castle gates to help the rebels take it), means you can take a lot of territory without having to actually start a war with other clans. At least up until Realm Divide...
I play Mount & Blade: Warband - Gekokujo Mod and this is the only Clan I ever really use as an army. I didn't know it was used so heavily in Shogun 2. I enjoy these videos.
I've playing Shogun2 for the past 2 weeks now, trying out mods to rebirth the excitement of the Medieval Japan era. From what I've noticed, playing as Shimazu is extremely easy even on Legendary. One really insane thing that I've noticed, vs the other factions I've played as, is when you get a foreign trading post, the other factions will greatly want to trade with you, even paying you as high as 29,000 yen!!! I exploited this easy cash grab the 2 times I played as Shimazu and made sure to trade and get as much money out of those dumb ai lol! I've gotten roughly 150,000yen in total (with the expanded japan mod putting in a ton of new factions) from the ai for allowing them to trade with me... this only works once though and if you lose trade with them and try to trade again you won't expect more than 100yen as payment.
I like shimazu, my first clan was date which is another clan that has defensive starting position. I don’t like fighting enemies on all sides like Germans. But Date is really slow on having sons. Shimazu is really quick, you get 2 sons ready to fight b4 you take over the island. Most importantly, if one dies you still got another one for heir.
My favourite major clan from the sengoku jidai. I wish they got a clan bonus in shogun 2 for increased morale or something when outnumbered by their enemies because if the shimazu were famous for nothing else it was smashing armies about ten times their size
Easy tips, at round one upgrade the harbour and create bow kobaya ASAP to secure the trading spots so it woudnt be taken. And convert to christianity for the european trade ship to secure this spots and have the strongest economy of all clans
They easy and fun, but also incredibly easy to get crippled early as new player, especially if you dont convert. The trade economy collapses for a turn if just one enemy ship sneaks in and blockades you, and actually conquering your starting island can be a slog if you dont convert due to the unrest in everything the otomo touched.
you asked for requests so here it is! one of me favourite clans is the Hattori, but the upkeep and the position Iga is always destroys me. i know that there are two very fertile lands near Iga, but whenever i do take them its an all out war with the Ikko and others around me. so i request a video for the Hattori, when you have the time of course
If the heir isn't of age at the start of the campaign I always adopt the unrelated general. This way no one takes the upstart sons penalty, the general gains 1 loyalty, no one takes an upstart generals penalty when you hire the next general and you have a backup heir in case something goes horribly wrong.
Played Darthmod I failed a domination campaign with Shimazu once because the AI decided to block all exit out of Kyushu Had too much money from savings but had difficult creating a navy strong enough to kill all enemy ships When I got out, i had 5 armies of full stacks of 3 yari cavalry 4 naginata samurai 8 katana samurai and 4 fire rockets blitzing across the countryside with spare koku to protect every conquered settlement from invaders But it was still not enough
You mean converting other provinces or converting the clan's religion? Either way, that is a rather selfish and lazy request considering that you should try to create a strategy for yourself. If you rely too much on books, or in this case videos, you will be playing the game by the book instead of actually playing the game.
Playing and conquering as the shims I is actually quite hard cuz killing th otomo who is a Christian clan, settlement become very hard to conquer and keep
Hey, just a little thing-when you say north, it's actually west and east is north. The map is rotated clockwise 90 from our due north thinking. The map is oriented due west actually.
I am very much aware the map is rotated, but have a look at a real map of Japan and a map of in-game Japan, it's nowhere near 90 degrees. North is still north, and even if it wasn't, I'm not about to confuse everyone by saying east when in-game it's north, that wouldn't make any sense. I've been told this many times, but I'm pretty sure those who comment this have never actually done a comparison, there's barely any difference there. Shikoku is still east of Kyushu, the Date are still in the the most northern part, it really doesn't change much.
after i saw your chosobake bow only chalenge, and while i refuse to see warhammer 2 content (i still dont have the game), i have to ask you to do another shimazu run, but now with heavy gunners
Unfortunately, Tosa in FOTS is not the Chosokabe you play in Shogun 2, Chosokabe have been eradicated during the last day of Sengoku Jidai in the siege of Osaka
Prior to the Edo peroid the sword was a back up weapon so I think Katana Samurai and Katana cavalry should not have been allowed in the game. Instead how I would make it that the Shimazu get cheaper and slightly better samurai units in both infantry and cavalry categories compared to minor clans but Shimazu samurai are not as good as their counterparts from the specialized clans.
I wish we had shogun 3 with all the mechanics of 3K. Japanese history is a topic I know way more about than Chinese. I also find their history more interesting in general although 3K is making China almost as interesting!
So what? Also, that requires mods. Also, if you didn't have a full stack of Katana heroes you would've had a stack and a half of Samurai/Warrior Monk tier units, which would've done just as well. You never win a campaign 'because' of a certain army or unit, because if you didn't have them, you'd have something else, you wouldn't just lose.
Every single time I play as the Shimazu, the Shoni come in and take over the rest of the island in just a couple of turns.. Never even make it to year two before it happens, then they post up their armies so I cant go anywhere, and after a year they come in and wreck my shit since I cant make any freaking money..
i always think about the Chosokabe, what were my first clan that i played with, since i love archers they are my fav. Clan in the game, also i like where their capital is located
+MrSmartDonkeyLP what do you think of an army with yari cav, bow samurai and naginata samurai as the main line? Not for shimazu of course but for Mori,Hojo,Tokugawa etc.?
Shimazu is just too strong and easy, especially they have the best starting position. They can recruit Shimazu Katana perhaps with improved armor or weapon right away.
I always thought that Shimadzu clan was made to be a christian one. They've got the Foreign Trade Port from the start, their generals are loyal (which saves from loaylity decrease after converting into Christiany), heck even their flag has the Cross And European trade ships are perfect to keep in control the trade factories, which are closest to Shimadzu
Shimazu is the easiest to rules as catch is to conquer the whole kyu shu as no attack from back from ryuukyu and after kyushu conquer create light archer cavalary only and assasinate threating commander and bought all low moraled United and move steady and sure to the north and sengoku will be paciffied and tenno land is in peace again
Best clan in the game. Though dies fast in my other campaigns. Actually in order of death, Tokugawa,Shimazu,Date,Mori. Only rarely does any of these 4 survive.
Hi SmartDonkey, I'm just wondering what program did you use to record your videos? I'm gonna make some videos about Shogun 2 so can you give me some advices?
Yes let me tell you These Shimazu make a damn ton of babies. Like... I have about 100 turns in and the family tree goes The first guy hasn't even died yet :D (daimyo) and popped 4 kids. And if that wasn't crazy those kids popped a lot too. One popped 5. Then those kids grew and I can't even see them in the family tree??? Lol :D
I bought shogun 2 like 3 years ago , it is going quite firm and am really enjoying it. However, I feel like it doesnt contain the updates your shogun 2 contain. for example , blood on the screen when a soldier is dead , the graphics are better on your shogun even though I maxed my graphics settings. I just wanna know how many types or modes are there for shogun 2 and how can I update it
MrSmartDonkeyLP Hey man!Your channel is awesome and these videos are perfectly informative!I'm about to buy the Gold edition to Shogun 2?Can you explain the features of the gold edition before buying it?
It's not on Steam so I assume it's a physical copy, it probably has some DLC or something. You can buy the remaining DLC on Steam either way, so it's nothing special.
I honestly call BULLSHIT on taht 'masters of integrity" and 'increased loyalty for generals'. One of my campaigns I was hummin along all good and then out of the damn blue, in one of the missions, half my damn army turned on me, including my main general guy..... Whats the trick to getting super elite units? I sometimes encounter AI with ENTIRE 20 stacks of 8 rank guys and im all like "How the hell!?" Its usually some minor 1 province scrub faction to. Meanwhile, I struggle to even get my line units to 5-6 veterancy. I know you combine units after battle to cut down on the XP reduction from fresh recruits, but past that.....Only guys I ever get high are my cavalry and bowmen. And as for cavalry, I usually go with Katana Cav just to be different. Are they really that bad?
Yea the anime is pretty cool, the manga more so, usually in my games as Shimazu the 4th child is a girl, which is kind of annoying cause the 4th son is Shimazu Iehisa...which is Toyohisa's father! the MC of the show. Think its cause the game starts in 1545 and Iehisa was born in 47 so any child after 45 i would guess just be random. Which is a shame cause it would be cool to have them all.
Minamoto to Shimazu to Satsuma, you can literally play through this clan's whole history.
The takeda is in the rise of the samurai too but it’s unplayable

I love the Shimazu. The bonuses are good, the start is great, and they're green! Mah fav color!

I love red, but I was a Shimazu main in Shogun 1 because: Swords. And I still think they're cool, now. Just saying.
I love them but the green is a huge turnoff for me. I loved the color they had on FotS (as Satsuma domain).

Hi SmartDonkey, I'm just wondering what program did you use to record your videos? I'm gonna make some videos about Shogun 2 so can you give me some advices?
I use Shadowplay, which you can only use if you have an Nvidia graphics card.
Shimazu are the second biggest edgelords after the hattori
Am I the only who saw the face of the Yari Ashigaru from up close?
Literally looks like they're all tired of this shit.
Is it possible to convert Shimazu to Christianity even without the Otomo DLC?
You forget to mention that they are the only clan that can control the dragon. Oh wait, wrong clan..
Yes let me tell you
These Shimazu make a damn ton of babies.

I have about 100 turns in and the family tree goes
The first guy hasn't even died yet :D (daimyo) and popped 4 kids. And if that wasn't crazy those kids popped a lot too. One popped 5. Then those kids grew and I can't even see them in the family tree??? Lol :D
just play whit samurais katana, is very easy even on legendary, but u need to defend and play very good at the start
I just wanna know how many types or modes are there for shogun 2 and how can I update it
There's DLC for the blood. Graphics I'm not sure, should be exactly the same for you.
Are they really that bad?
have you ever watch the anime Drifters, the MC there is a Shimazu guy... :D
Is the map you use for unit demonstrations a mod? If so, could I have a link?
Nope, it's a standard map, I believe it's called Rice Fields.
MrSmartDonkeyLP Mkay thanks
