- in my recent video i built a tarp shelter set using a u.s.army surplus tarp.in this video we will show that tarp shelter set in action.we will set the tarp up using the ridgeline i made in my earlyer video complete with the tarp quick connects i created for it.next we will change from a diamond shelter to a flying tarp set to cover hammocks .550 paracord was used to make the ridgeling set..

Blackie, a comment on angling of stakes. The standard 45 degree that you state is a good starting point. But is at its best ONLY if the direction of pull is also at a 45 degree angle to the ground.
The goal that we’re really after here, is to have the peg perpendicular (90 degree angle) to the line of tension, NO MATTER WHAT the angle of of the line to the ground is.
Thanks a lot for the thought out procedures on lines, stakes, loops, knots, tarps, toggles, and all. They will help me a lot in camp.

Great video once again. There are so many was to use a tarp in the woods. The best thing anyone could do is, get in the woods and try it out, you could even do it in your yard if you have room and trees! There are warm weather set ups, and cold weather set ups, wet weather and dry weather set ups. Then there's always the wind! Practice, practice practice! Get creative you might just have some fun doing it.

Good heavens, you are becoming my reference book on quick ties/non-knots, etc. I gotta practice though, because I'm dumb as a rock on the activities I most want to do. I could play ya a little Mendelssohn on the piano but I'd rather be outside playing with sticks!

That timber hitch there at the end.
I've been tarping for a lot my life now and I've never considered using such a knot....always a bowline loop with a stick in at one end and truckers at the t'other.
I'm going to give that timber hitch a try.

I use the timber hitch to tie off the end of my bear bag line. It is easy to tie and holds well without getting hard to release.

You can do it! the trick is to make sure the final position of the rope is comin off the tree to the side of the knot so as it pulls tight it is trying to twist the knot tighter against the tree if you don't do this the knot can slip

I like new ways to do things like your quick release timber hitch. I think a better way to hank your cordage is the figure 8 around the thumb and pinky.

You have your own unique system that you have developed through experience and it works well for you. I like the use of the quick release timber hitch, I have used that one a few times myself. I personally use wooden toggles but your cordage system works very well also and eliminates the need for wooden toggles. All in all a very well thought out and versatile system. Good stuff Blackie! What size was your tarp btw?

Can I ask why you choose a Timber hitch vs something like a bowline with a marlin spike hitch which is quickly set up and take down and can be premade and Adapted for ridgeline hammock tarps ETC.
This is especially true as you already use a-bowline for the tarp grommet, so just pulling a bite through would create that modified marlin spike. Which would still be a quick release and the extra cordage could run out into a ridgeline to pull the back of Shelter up with a Prusik knot
very true with the bowline already tied i can 1..pass ridgeline thru and simply pull it tight...2 tie a timber for a quick release..3 grab a toggle and create a marline spike..i can do any of these so its really what the conditions are and what i feel like using

just for video..i was pressed for time didnt want to have to hunt for a mallet
I was wondering why you were switching out the cordage on your stakes. It seemed like wasted effort. Just to be doing the same thing again, when I was watching the other video you did. Smooth move...
yep the cord on the stakes is too short for the twist trick..and the thin strong cord hold up better
Question next project is finding a good tarp was looking at the military surplus tarps but I prefer a square tarp my canvas diamond fly is to bulky and heavy I’ve had the light weight nylon tarps are all tearing now what lol
I prefer square tarps too, I can recommend DD Hammocks and they ship worldwide. Good choice of colours and durable for their weight.
Just Vin ya was looking at those and the aqua quest safari or defender tarps
DD hammock tarps are well respected..might be something to look into
I searched and researched, was even considering blowing a ton of money on dyneema....ended up with an Aquaquest...many sizes, LIFETIME guarantee. $100 for a tarp may seem insane but I use a tarp exclusively year 'round so I need it bombproof. So far it's been great.

they are usually too afraid to come that close should they do so ai will make a noise and that will send them running unless you're in a public campground where they have become unafraid of humans

Ok... what is with the barrage of comercials... one at the beginning and then ever 5 minutes? Very frustrating. That is too many. My grandkids and I like your videos. They learn s lot, BUT lately we are frustrated with all the comercials - commercials that are often not appropriate for kids. It makes me think twice about watching your videos. I trust your content but not theirs. Please fix this issue.
