    This time it's Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolors. I've always heard mixed opinions about Winsor & Newton Professional grade paints, so I never got around to trying them, but after swatching them out I think I might have found a new favourite brand.

    I just realized that I got the pigments for the Davy's Gray wrong. The pigments on the watercolor stick I have say PV17, PBk9, PW4, PBk19.
    Different from the pigments listed on their website for the watercolor.

      Pretty sure there is a misprint there. Davy's grey is green, white and black.. should be PG17. It's a lovely color for landscapes, especially urban settings. Skies, concrete, tin, etc.

    I've tried dozens of brands. WN professional has a special place for me. There is just something about the way they blend, flow, and mix. They get flack for being "dull" especially the earth tones.. but the individual colors are tempered so they all just go so well together. They give that soft classic European watercolor look... which is exactly what they are designed to do. They are reliable with very few exceptions, the labeling is accurate, and there is a wide variety of quality pigments that are what they say they are. I just find them a pleasure to paint with. Swatches only show so much.. it's how they behave in an actual painting that tells the tale. I do feel they are best when in a single brand palette. I can't stand Cotman, it's only the professional line I would recommend.

      You're right that they definitely give that soft classic European look. I think that's probably what draws me to them. 😊

    Lovely selection. Let’s just say that WN has been in this business for a looonnnnggg time, and know what they are doing. They may not be as flashy or splashy as some other brands, but they are reliable and beautiful. They behave really well, with just enough flow. I really love using them for botanicals and florals, although I prefer some others’ earths. Winsor Lemon is my favorite lemon yellow. Permanent rose is softer than daniel Smiths Quin Rose, and blends beautifully in florals. I like both of their ceruleans, which granulate nicely. Their cadmiums are velvety. Smalt is just gorgeous, and really granulating. I love to use their Raw Sienna in skies to get a glow. It can be carefully blended into blue without turning green - I think that touch of reddish PR101 makes it a little magic. I wasn’t crazy about their orangey Burnt Sienna initially, but it has definitely grown on me. Mix that with the indanthrene blue or French ultramarine and see how the orange and blue neutralize each other. Davys gray is good for concrete and stones, but also for soft subtle shading in florals. WN developed that color in the 1880s for Henry Davy, he used it to great effect in clouds for the undersides and shadows. I steered away from them initially because I also heard about problems rewetting, but I haven’t had any issues. I do give them a little water to activate, I dont just try to pick up color in one swipe. In your humid environment I doubt you’ll have any problems.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  2 года назад +2

      I wonder if they've been reformulated to rewet better? I mean all the talk of them being hard to rewet must've come from somewhere? 😂
      I guess after all the years they have been making paints they should be pretty good at it by now. I'm definitely impressed 😊

      @@JayNathanWatercolor I think W&N themselves don't recommend using their tube paints dried, but instead encourage buying their pans then, which apparently are formulated differently. I don't have super many of their paints, but I do know it makes a difference in their Cobalt Violet and their Quinacridone Gold. :)

    As I'm in the UK I grew up with W&N but have tried most of the big brands. I find W&N very reliable and enjoy painting with them. The colours are bright and clean. They may not have all the bells and whistles but what they have works and mixes cleanly. And they've added some winderful brights over the years like the jewel tones. Granulation in the 'usual' palette colours is what I call refined and attractive. Never wild. It's a lovely paint, no question. Some colours I'd only buy the tube version, like viridian. The vintage paints were stronger and I still collect those when I can, but there's nothing wrong with the new ones made in France. In UK they are great in a starter set as they can be about a third of the price of Scmincke on a good day in a sale. The individual paints then jump to DS and Schmincke prices but again are frequently in good deals. My go to hues are all the reds you have there, they are bright and clean. I love the FUltra, cerulean and smalt...this cerulean has a beautiful granulation so mixed with ultramarine for summer skies it can produce more drama. The Rose is one of my favourites. And transparent yellow, with rose and Aqua or phthalo turquoise makes a fabulous triad.

    W&N professional quality paints are excellent. I particularly like the primary set used and recommended by Yong Chen on his channel: Windsor Yellow, Windsor Red & Prussian Blue. He seems to create any colour you like from just those three colours and his deft mixing skills. Making a colour wheel from those primaries is a good exercise for us newbies out here in watercolour rabbit hole land...

    Winsor and Newton are beautiful paints to work with. They blend beautifully together and I prefer them for mixing. I have other brands and they're lovely too. These are local and therefore cheaper for me than many of the others. I think people tend to go for what they can get that's affordable. I'm just fortunate that my local is such a reliably good brand. Thanks for checking them out.

    I want to love Daniel Smith the most, as I love granulation - but anything I paint with them looks disappointing at a distance when dry. Whereas the paintings I seem to keep out on display, the ones that delight the eye with their colour harmony and luminescence - the ones that let the magical white of the paper shine through - are the ones painted with WN.
    I'm trying to stick to the 12 colours that came in my first Cotman travel set, trusting that they were each chosen for a good reason: Gamboge, Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Alizarin, Winsor Violet, French Ultra, Turquoise, Viridian, Sap Green, Paynes Gray (love this so much, mixes with every other colour so beautifully), and Lamp Black - because they play so well together.
    One of my favourite colours is Quin Magenta but it doesn't seem to mix well - it grays out in a really flat way in mixes, so I've learnt to avoid it.

      Same here. I've never had a problem rewetting them. I have issues with the price of WN and will probably replace some of my colours with more affordable brands but I can't say a bad word about them rewetting. They rewet instantly for me. It's a challenge to not get too much pigment on the brush with a swipe of a wet brush. I have to work at some of my DS paints though! Go figure 🤷‍♀️

    I enjoyed this video. I'm a Windsor Newton fan. They have a lovely luminosity on the page. I don't have a problem rewetting them, but I add a drop of glycerin when pouring and always spritz them with water first. I've since branched out with Daniel Smith half pans. My palette is a mix of the two and I'd have a hard time narrowing it down to ten. Good luck with your choices. I love DS Cerulean Deep over WN Cerulean Blue. I love WN Smalt Blue and prefer WN Burnt Sienna over others. I purchased my WN paints initially from Hobby Lobby, one a week (with coupon) over the course of a year.

    I’m so glad that you had a chance to try Winsor & Newton paints! They are hands down my favorite brand. They have a quality that is hard to describe, but I love the clarity of the paints and how well they layer. They feel light and bright. My favorite W&N colors are New Gamboge, Permanent Carmine, Permanent Magenta, Winsor Blue Red Shade, Sepia, Indigo and Potter’s Pink. I also prefer their PR101 Burnt Sienna over the PBr7 versions, but this is likely because, in the Cotman range, it was the first Burnt Sienna I’d ever used and because it reminds me of a Quinacridone color. But I totally agree with you on PG7. I prefer PG36 as my mixing green. Thanks for another great review!

    Another round of applause for your wonderful followers. What to say about W&N. Many people hate them others love them. I use their PY150 a lot, and their famous Turner Yellow (PY216). I really like its earth colors, but I have stopped using the Raw Siena and the Burnt Umber, they crack a lot in my hermetic palette, a pity, but I fall in love with its Burnt Siena, like the Smalt or the Perylene Violet, together with the Portters Pink, make some nice combinations, for certain monochromes. Here they are in the approximate price range between DS and Schmincke, depending on the serial number. I love their "Winsor" colors. They are beautiful and vibrant pigments as you can see. I think it would not be very difficult to choose a palette of 12 colors, I would be clear about what I would choose. Thanks again for another wonderful review. And thanks again yo your followers. @@JayNathanWatercolor I'm from Spain. It depends on each brand, each store has a price, I usually buy DS in one, Schmincke in another...etc. You can find 15 ml tubes, for example
      DS S1-€9.35, S2-€10.09, S3-€12.50, S4-14.50.
      W&N S1-S2 €10.86, S3 - €11.90, S4 - €16.05.
      Schmk. S1 - €10.80,
      S2 -€12.13, S3 - 15.05, S4 - 18.67.
      I buy in several online stores, what interests me and it is cheaper. Sometimes there are variations or promotions in price and brand. For example here it is impossible to find Mr. Graham or DaVinci or any American brand ( D Smith apart) but it is very easy to buy Román Szmal, Holbein, Mijello, Rembrandt, Sennelier or White Nighths (to name a few) at really cheap prices.
      For example 10ml tubes:
      Rembrandt S1 4,60€
      White Nigths S1 3,05€
      Sennelier S1 5,30€
      Godets
      Roman Szmal S1 2,05€
      Holbein and Mijello are really afordable prices ( specially Mijello 15 ml).

Permanent alizarin crimson is a must have for me too. You can get some great mixes from quin violet and transparent orange. It makes a lovely grey for woodpigeons and a bit more violet for the breast area. Transparent yellow is such a nice alternative to cad kemon and it's transparent. Great mixes. That has a permanent place on my palette for granulation. You can mix it with so many colors to make them granulate without making huge hue change. The WN version is best. Love the swatching and hearing your thoughts about the paint and comparisons.
    I've compared W&N to Sennelier, Schmincke, White Nights and M.Graham so far (Daniel Smith is on the purchase list) and so far I like W&N and M.Graham the most color wise. The colors generally seems to be a bit more transparent and vibrant to me. But it does differ from color to color between the brands. I believe a mixed brand pallette is the way to go. I'll get there some day, at a terrible cost after all the testing 😬🤪 but oh what fun I will have had.
    I don't think would not pay double for W&N if I could get the other brands for half the cost. For me all paint is almost equally expensive, so I might as well get what I want.

      It is a lot of fun exploring all the different brands. I've not yet tried Sennelier, or White nights and I've only tried a few M. Graham. I think my favourite brands are Schmincke and W&N so far ( if money was no object 🤣) but here in Asia I'm quite happy with the price and quality of Rembrandt and Mijello.

      @@JayNathanWatercolor White Nights are extremely affordable here, in contrast to the rest, but I have noticed and heard that they have a bit more inconsistencies with lightfastness than the more solid brands, so I tend to use the other brands instead to be sure.

      I think the trick is to not buy so many different paints. Use the money more wisely to buy good quality paints and practise mixing skills to create the hues you want for any given painting.
      I too have some how accumulated about 140 paints in 3 years, of which 60% of it is student grade paint. It will all get used and I'll enjoy the process of learning and painting too.

    Permanent Carmine don't have a pigment number "yet" but on the website they will tell you the actual name of the pigment.
    Sap Green is really nice.
    Some people prefer the PR101 "Burnt Sienna". For me... everything that can mix grey will be good enough.
    I didn't try a lot of Winsor & Newton but I have a few that I like and will buy again. I like their Prussian Blue, too. The mass tone is more comparable to Indigo but not as dark.

      Thank you for the information 🙏 I hadn't tried many W&N in the past either due to them being so expensive here. I think I'll use them a lot more in the future though.

      @@JayNathanWatercolor They are good but they can be expensive, too. In Europe they are just a tiny bit more expensive than Schmincke but outside of Europe they will cost more because of the shipping, I think. I have tried Quinacridone Gold from Schmincke but it's too yellow for me... the same I think about the Winsor & Newton one, too. It's good for a warmer yellow but the shade isn't right, for me at least.

    I particularly love the W&N quin. gold and raw sienna, I keep returning to them no matter how many brands I try! My w&n collection is small and all in older pans with very dry formula. When I'm in dry places it causes me frustration to rewet but when in humid places I'm grateful they won't turn to a wet jelly, like white nights and Roman Szmal, lol. Are you using pans or tube paint in the video? They all look beautiful, but I prefer Van Gogh/Rembrandt for Davy's grey. I hope you enjoy painting with them and have lots of fun ^_^

      I also love their Quin. Gold! 😍 I've been getting extra pans since the PR206 won't be manufactured anymore, so just in case you didn't know I want to give you a heads up about it! (The pigment has been discontinued.)

      Thank you very much 🙏 The paint in the video all comes from tubes that have been dried into pans (except Davy's Gray). They all rewet very easily. I've not tried the Van Gogh/Rembrandt Davy's Grey. This W&N one came from a watercolor stick and I didn't really know what to do with it 🤣

      @@JayNathanWatercolor oh that's great, maybe the dried tubes rewet better then! I also have sticks, totally forgot about that. I usually cut them in slices and put them in pans.

  • @GemukiDev

    I avoided W&N for a long time because they are expensive and difficult to rewet. However, used straight from the tube are such a joy! If you overlook that, it is difficult to find a disappointing color in their range, they all look very consistent and they have the best versions of so many colors and also a few super special ones like Dumont blue. However, I must disagree with you in one thing: the cobalt violet is nothing like rembrandt's. I find this one much more saturated and intense, the rembrandt's is more pinky. Also... I'm surprised of how pale the cadmium red deep looks when dried, its value seems lower than the cad light O-o! Did you use enough paint? Or maybe this color is like this? (I have a similiar exp with sennelier but I thought it was a brand's issue)

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  2 года назад +1

      You're probably right about that. I'll have to do a side by side test with the Cobalt Violets if I have any of the Rembrandt left. I probably painted the cad red deep with less pigment.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  2 года назад +4

      That is such a difficult question 🤣 Reasonably priced means a different thing to different people and can very much depend on what part of the world you live.
      Here in Thailand I would use Rembrandt. If I could continue to get it at the discount price I have been able to over the last year. If not then I would use Mijello Mission Gold.
      If I was in the USA I would probably go for Da Vinci. I've been very impressed with them.
      If I wanted to go even more reasonably priced I would go with White Nights or Van Gogh. ☺️

    W&N had factory changes in the last 12 years. First they moved manufacturing to France, and since 2014 or so, to China. Some people who have been using them for decades saw major shift in quality, for worse. So it depends where these paints were manufactured at. If they're old enough to be from UK, they should be the good versions. Or so they say...

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  2 года назад +2

      Yes I had heard that W&N are not really British any more. I guess it made sense to move the manufacturing to China to save costs. It's a shame these savings are never passed on to the customer though. Sounds like the quality goes down but the prices continue to rise.
