The Great Ace Attorney is a Masterpiece

- The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles was announced around a year ago. And with how important this series has been to me, and especially this game recently, it is a topic I feel I should talk about and why the game works so well. It's a game that repeatedly gets praise yet it is also a game that has been overlooked in just publicity and even it's own quality.
So this is a review/appreciation of a game that means so much to me. A game that I have played multiple times, seen countless others play, and am still learning a lot of new things and little details about it.
This video is incredibly new for me to make and is around 7-9 months overdue, but I felt it turned out extremely well. Thank you all for sticking with me as I try and expand into new avenues and learn as I experiment. I just love talking about this franchise and sharing my thoughts on topics, so I hope you all will enjoy it as well.
I know it is cringe, but if you enjoyed the video, a like, comment, or sub would greatly help personally. But most of all, it means the most just giving me a chance and enjoying my videos.

Fun Fact: This game doesn't use actual instruments for its soundtrack. Yasumasa Kitagawa (the primary composer for the duology) revealed in a blog that he used Cubase (a DAW/music software notably used by Hans Zimmer) for the soundtrack. However, a few elements were still recorded live, like the tap dancing in "Partners - The game is afoot!" and the amazing violin in Herlock's depressing attempt at playing his "Stradivarius."
tap dancing is probably one of the things you can't get to sound right on software. That Hans Zimmer bit is interesting though.
Don't forget the song the King of Germany sings in that one bit
@@SydneySininen Right, "Germany"...
does he have a personal blog or was this on capcom's blog or something like it? would love to read more about it!
Fun fact, Cubase was also used to make Velocity:Design:Comfort by Sweet Trip!
It is so fucking unfair that this game doesn't get the attention it deserves, it is genuinely the best game in the franchise and still people haven't played it. The story, characters, cases, soundtrack, every-fucking-thing is so beautifully done, from start to finish (ok it has its ups and downs but there wasn't a single case a didn't like maybe the second one in the first game because there's no trial) and my GOD IT DESERVES SO MUCH MORE ATTENTION THAN IT GETS. Also Sholmes is the best character in the franchise.
*cough* JFA *cough*
It's getting more and more attention recently from what I've seen!
Sholmes IS the best character
Totally agree. Aside from the second chapter being one looooooong investigative segments and one major case splitting into two chapters at the end, the game is pretty much nigh perfect with 3 of the cases ranking among the best in series (3rd, 8th, and 9th+10th). It helped that the writings and themes aren't afraid of truly delving into so many shades of grey and that no one walked out of the story without any sort of consequences, making for really impactful narrative comparing to what other games in series have tried.
cough Investigations 2 cough
The two games together were better than any other AA game. It's better than the original trilogy to me.
I agree. After finishing the original trilogy I thought there was no way any other AA game would surpass them for me. I enjoyed Investigations and Apollo Justice but they just didn't hit the same. But when I got to TGAA oh my god I finally got that same feeling I got when I played the original trilogy and by the end of TGAA2 I realised I'd actually enjoyed it even more than the original trilogy.
same
Glad to see someone agree with me, but I still loved the trilogy nevertheless!
Thanks for making this mate. As you say, TGAA is not explored as much at the moment as the original trilogy. Hopefully that will change in the future. It's clear you have a passion for this series, and hopefully through making this review more people will find this gem of a game. Now I'm off to make some ice coins out of soap :)
I've seen tgaa fans who got into it through all sorts of places, but mostly anime and ACD sherlock; I think the massive overlap highlights the universal charm you talk about.
It has a loyal cult following but it's still really underrated and I get slightly impatient with mystery game fans who won't play tgaa because they couldn't get through AA1. that's like saying you won't try breath of the wild because you didn't like link's crossbow training.
The last part is very odd. Those two games play totally differently. GAA, while being fairly unique in the context of the series, still plays very similarly on a fundamental level to AA1
Great ace attorney is my favorite game of all time, I greatly appreciate all your effort to make this video. I hope you'll make more talking vids
I love you appreciation for the smaller details. The use of the models, artstyle, environment, and all that makes it such an immersive experience. It all flows into itself beautifully.
Shu Takumi's masterpiece
This game has been the only game (or any other artistic medium) which made me feel like I got pulled out of a separate world to the real one once it finished, and it also made me feel like I had a certain relationship with the characters, despite them only ever talking to each other. Guess it all stuck through osmosis, considering just how long this game takes to finish.
Does anyone know how to erase the TGAAC from my mind so I can play it again?
Amnesia or Alzheimer, take your pick.
A lot of the character designs and music give Proffesor Layton vs Phoenix Wright flashbacks.
Having London have more of a Professor Layton vibe was such a good idea.
I'm so glad these games came into existence. During the run up to the english release to these games, i binged the AA5, AA6 and PL vs PW:AA in preparation to see how it stacked up to the rest of the series. I did not expect it to become my favourite collection in the series.
Fun fact: Great Ace Attorney takes place in the 1890’s, since Sholmes mentions the Window tax being abolished 40 years ago, and the Great
Exhibition being advertised as “the start of a new century.”
of course the ost is good. it made me cry when i looked at a cabinet.
God im still not over that case
Commenting so the algorithm shows this to others and they play dgs
Seriously one of the greatest videogames of all time
I played through these games with my dad who I only saw for a few hours a week so these games became a significant part of my life for a while
I'm not over them ending I'm not over it they're SO DAMN GOOD I miss them so so so so SO much
I adore the characters, setting, animation, music, mysteries, gameplay, EVERYTHING
and every time I'm reminded of it I start losing my mind again
couldnt have said it better myself these games sre so good
don't know why you hating on your voice king, its butter smooth and the mic quality is top tier
thisissuch a great video!! one of my fav video essays by far
I recently finished the game and I am so happy to see videos praising it! The game blew me away, just as the older AA games did too, but to a whole other level. Great video!
:adachiTrue:
this is such a good video man. i agreed with everything you said somehow, honestly the way you presented and explained all the information is ap lit quality essay.
for a while i’ve barely talked about, read, or engaged in anything related to ace attorney. but the game (especially tgaa) is still so special to me, and honestly with the few chances i’ve gotten i’ve ranted about my love for it.
thank you for doing justice the brilliance of tgaa, i’m confident this video will convince people to play it
It’s kinda funny tho because the entire first game I actually didn’t like sholmes. He was just an annoying dunce.
But by the end, I couldn’t help but laugh along to his crazy antics. Idk when that change happened but I’m really glad it did ^^
I did always wonder if Sholmes was messing with us and he finally admits it in the end. He always knew his deductions were wrong, he was training his new friends the art of deduction by making them clean his messes
I wish more people would play this game. It's phenomenal. I got out of my Ace Attorney phase a while ago but I still kept coming back to TGAA lol
It's my first AA game and I'm kinda worried I started with the best game and everything is just downhill from here. Would you say there's any games that are as good as TGAA that I should try next??
@@bugjams i can't say they're as good as tgaa but the original trilogy is phenomenal and definitely worth playing. there's also the ace attorney investigations games, i'm not a fan of investigations 1 at all, it's mostly just set-up for the sequel, investigations 2, which is on par with tgaa2 imo.
@@bugjams also coming back to mention the layton crossover, i have never played it but i've heard good things about it, and tgaa's art and music is very much inspired by professor layton so!
@@cdupdetatI finished playing all AA games with PLvsPW and TGAAC as my last two games and imho, I think I did it well. Both of these games feel interconnected to eachother in gameplay in a way that DD and SoJ failed to do for me. I thought DD and SoJ were great until I went to the crossovers and TGAAC.
@@cdupdetatas someone who played the Layton cross-over I can confirm it's a really good
This was actually my first Ace Attorney game, that and it's sequel bundled together on switch. I enjoyed it when I first played it, but looking back, I feel as though it takes way too long to get going.
First case: Tutorial on General mechanics.
Second case: Tutorial on Investigating and Deductions.
Third case: Tutorial on Jury mechanics.
Fourth case: The most OBNOXIOUS character known to man.
Fifth case: Actually really fun and engaging.
It's 60% tutorials, and half of the 40% that's left aren't even all that fun cases.
Seriously Soseki, I'm just asking the time of day, you don't gotta go, "MIRACULOUS MALEVOLENT MALICIOUS MIDNIGHT O CLOCK!"
My favorite track in the first games soundtrack is Kazumas theme because ITS JUST SO DAMN GOOD MAN❤❤
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR TGAA
that whole twist with klint being the professor, mikotoba being Sholmes partner, Iris being klint’s daughter, etc those plot twists still get to me Istg- the plot twists this game had were genuinely some of the best plot twists I’ve ever seen I loved them these games still get to me even after having finished it in November. AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE MUSIC- those games were phenomenal I LOVED it. I loved it even more than the trilogy
The moraly grey characters and the black tone of the game are just ogjekfhz ❤
after playing ajaa which i really loved i started part 5 and didn't really like it and was bummed that this series doesn't bring me joy anymore. and then i discovered tgaa. it was in 2020, and i still absolutely love the game and the characters. it's sad that it didn't get much attention. this is the best ace attorney game imo, even if it's a spin-off.
i will admit that i paused and rewinded at 9:07 just to hear drebber's theme again-
It’s so incredibly good
Sound track is amazing
Based CoolCarGuy making video essays
i didnt think anything could top the original trilogy when i finished it, but after playing the great ace attorney chronicles, i think it's an absolute masterpiece of a dualogy and the soundtrack for it was absolutely god tier. the pursuit soundtrack for this game is just absolutely amazing also.
My goodness the Great Ace Attorney is insanely underrated. It lives up to its name, it truly is great.
We need more people to play this, it’s phenomenal omg imagine some big gaming RUclipsr plays it that would be great honestly
10:14 That's moreso because that's how most of the original Sherlock Holmes short stories were titled, I think
I just got into the series with the final Capcom sale on 3DS. The first game grabbed me immediately. For some reason, I fully missed out on the series for over 20 years. I’m now in the process of buying them all.
I already have played and played 2nd too they were great ^^
this is one of my favorite games and a 10/10
i never actually played aa until this game only ever heard of it and if the rest of the games are as good as this i need them yesterday because this one is one of my favorite games of all time
The original trilogy is amazing too
This was my first game i finished in the franchise and I lowk still cry when I listen to the soundtrack
Good video!
I love how examining the evidence updates the evidence and give it a new meaning, a feature that is severely lacking in the main series.
Gosh this game was so good. It's impacted me so much that I'm making every character in Miitopia!
Gonna comment so the algorithm (hopefully) works its magic and gets this video and game shown to more people. Byyy telling my 3 favourite ace attorney games! (All my opinion)
Trials and tribulations (first aa game i was exposed to by lets dub project. I feel in love with godot as a kid)
Spirit of justice. (I would say Duel Destinies for nostalgia sake since it was my first aa game. SOJ just has the better cases for me)
Aand TGAAC (everything this game did, it did near spot on by god- Sholmes is amazing and he’s my favourite iteration of the vaguely autistic coded detective)
I played this, and I got hooked instantly.
my guy is so real for this video
Here to (hopefully) spread the word about this masterpiece. I can't believe I have slept on purchasing this game for nearly a year and a half. If you're considering this game, don't make the same mistake I have, play it ASAP!!!
Here's hoping we get more of TGAA in the future.
no for real 😭😭 i got the game about a month ago, just finished it a few hours ago, and dear god do i wish i picked it up sooner. i haven't been this enamored by a story and its characters in so long.
GO CARL GOOOOO
Nice video. Could you do a spoiler review?
I love these games it was my first platinum
WOOOO GO CARL
Hey Paige, can you like shut up, kid?

Hey GOG!
I think the only thing I really had a gripe on the two games is Ryunosuke's Objection in the dub. There's just no kick to it! If you want a really strong Objection, use the Japanese audio.
I kind of like the fact that it's such a chill "objection!" It makes it feel like he's calm to have shifted the situation in his favor, a contrast to his "HOLD IT!" "TAKE THAT!" and "YES!" which all seem either forceful or desperate. The timing and placement of these different speech bubbles is really why the contrast is present.
@@poyopowerplantI honestly don’t mind it either, though it could definitely stand to have a bit more force behind it. But Ryunosuke is so damn polite I can’t imagine him having anything else lmao
@@poyopowerplantI get your point, buuuuut nah I definitely prefer when the Objection voice clips feel like a slap across the opponents face.
@@Excelsior1937 Well, I'd say that's what Ryunosuke's "Hold It!" and "Take That!" are for. They both have excellent energy, and it pays off since the "Take That!" specifically only happens during critical parts of the case!
@@Excelsior1937i think seeing his opponent is usually Barok he doesn't want to give the man more reasons to dislike him and when Barok apologizes for his outbursts so I think they just don't yell so much
The Greatest Ace Attorney 10/10
watching this while my wife and her boyfriend are out on a date. really enjoying it so far, great video!

Commenting for the algorithm
I bought a Switch just to play the game and I absolutely don't regret it. What an incredible masterpiece.
If you haven’t played this game, play this game

Spoilers alert Almost finished case 5 I hope I can get Gina innocent and I hope even more funny animation that is amazing just like the joke of when skull bros look at Gregson
And it's now the ONLY games that will NOT be translated into French so i CAN'T make my mother play it it's so unfair !
"Ace Attorney' is such a great franchise👍🏻🌈
I like ace attorney even tho it is like 20-36 dollars
I still liked Phoenix Trilogy more but TGAA is also good, definitely the second best after T&T
The best AA game
Only characters I don't like are Windibank and the Garridebs
Windibank died so fast you didn’t even have to like him to be honest. Though you’ve gotta admit he was kinda hilarious when he ran for the gun lmao
This man's accent
I don't think it's an accent
I think that at least for me I didn't watch it at first because well... I didn't like that they were trying to make the ancestor of Phoenix a attorney since Phoenix wasn't really intending on becoming an attorney himself until Edgeworth was making headlines in court as a prosecutor. However I can tell that I was dead wrong with that deduction and I should have been more willing for change in the game.
the only terrible thing is the pacing... it's so slow and dragged.
the final case of the first game last 10 hours for no reason and beside the ending, it seems like a 10 hours filler episode
Most people who felt this loved the second game
I have to disagree with the sentiment. I’m sorry it’s not a masterpiece or even the best of Ace attorney.
and the second case of the first games is genuinely the worst in the series
Slow down a little my man, your Engrish is hard to understand
dgs was eh
heathen
i agree, dgs kinda suck tho
ur probably a gpz fsn
youre making a very bold claim right now
No
More like the bad ace attorney, the only acceptable ace attorney game is vs layton because I haven’t played it
