Wonderful performance. Back in 1973 there were so many brilliant rock guitarists that Jorma kind of gets overlooked, but he was fantastic.
Still is! Just saw them in December!
I was lucky enough to have been at this show. Lived a few blocks away.
This performance started a lifelong love of Hot Tuna.
Was a great time to be young.
Thanks for posting this incredible memory!❤
I've been listening to this song for decades and it never gets old.
1978 to right now 12 years old to 54
Never..... decades!!’👍💕
Never gets old. Though I do
Ditto. Sublime. Nuff said. ;-)
Me too. Since it was released. Worked out a version on my 12-string. It's in open-G tuning ( or is it open-G tuna? ;-)
Damn fine instrumental! Can't get enough of it.
Fred
What a time, what a time it was .
Such an underrated band from the 70's. I have been listening to Hot Tuna since 1970, still listen to them to this day.
Me too, recently listened to Phosphorescent Rat, America's Choice, Double Dose and Bless it's little pointed head, love all of the band lineup's. A fan from way back when music was great.
I prefer the electric Hot Tuna but water song is incredible.
I kissed Jorma on his cheek in San Rafael!!❤
@@cydneycheatwood4097 bet that made his pick stand up.😉
Too bad they lost Blind OWL Wilson.
I love how Jack Casady keeps time with his eyebrows.
You rarely see Jorma on the lists of great guitarists, but you damn sure should
@George Duffy Gotta look at the right list :)
Not many even the great electric guitar players. Can not play acoustic like Jorma! So that should put him near the top! You can also put Joe Walsh on that list!
that's dog-gone right!
He's on the #54 on Rolling Stones list? Should suffice.
damn right!
Extra thumbs up for Papa John. Double thumbs up for Jack counting time with his eyebrows.
Jack Rocks!!!!!!!!
Hevwas still doing it last night when i saw himmm those eye brows!
I never noticed Jack's eyebrows until I got a front row seat.
Did ya ever see Papa John at Diegos in SD, Ca.?
The guys who helped us make it through the 70s.
I miss papa john very much. Jorma & Jack are truly underrated! They are regular guys with awesome musical gifts. Rip papa john & god bless bless Jorma & Jack !
I've seen hot tuna half a dozen times since the early seventies.the music from the sixties and seventies will live on with the classics of the ages,no doubt.
Love that sweet look of satisfaction on Jorma’s face. That’s one damn fine tune - 50 years later
Wow watching HT video from a concert a few days ago. Jorma is 81, Jack right behind him. Sound and look great
Hot Tuna now owns this corner of musical genre....through talent, endurance, longevity. We can't help but admire them for that. They've already got tour dates set for 2023. These guys deserve to be in Rock Hall of Fame !! In the 1970s every musclecar had a Hot Tuna Double Dose 8 track tape in it, and they're still playing today.
You know, wouldn't it be kind of cool that they always get close, but never get into the RRHOF? They are phenomenal; nuff said...
Hot Tuna Burgers is my favorite album
weird i was around in the 70s, none of us had even heard of hot tuna
Jorma and Jack have been in the RRHOF since 1996, when they were inducted with a cool intro by Micky Hart and Phil Lesh with Jorma playing "Embryonic Journey" for "Jefferson Airplane" induction.
I love the way Jack raises his eyebrows
Jorma & Jack are a great force of energy with a beautiful heart, soul & Spirit that have been blessed with a gift & share that gift with others.
That bass-playing is TIGHT!
Jack has been one of my fav bass players of all time.
Any idea what bass he's playing here? It doesn't look like the starfire
I used to listen to Hot Tuna I still do but I used to,too.😂
me too,too, Mitch!
This song always brings tears to my eyes. Don't care how high they or audience was, everyone of those amazing artists played w joy of music. Skills galore, fully employed, flat out sharing the experience w everyone. Does anyone see this caliber these days?
This tune always makes my day brighter!
@@robertcrain4428 this tune is magical. Depression killer. 🎯
They play really good if they’re high. I couldn’t imagine playing that good highl
I know just what you mean. I saw Tuna play many times in 72-73 in the NY area and it was always a communion of the souls. The audience was right there with them.
Yes, there are those if we allow our judgements and prejudices to not interfere. I think Phish gets there. There are more. I just listened to Bill Kreutzman’s 75th birthday concert in Hawaii as Billy and The Kids. Catch it and listen to Billy Stings shrewd his guitar. Catch Tesdeshi Trucks. I admit that Jorma and Jack can do no wrong and they will always be at the pinnacle of the best in my opinion. But, open up and close hour eyes. They are out there.
I started playing guitar when I was in junior high school, but Jack was the reason I reached for the bass.
His style just clicked with me like no one I’d heard before.
Thanx, Jack. 😎
Jack was one of a kind.
Same here. Jack was like no one else then . Or now.
One of my first bass influences.
buuuut, have you mastered his Eyebrow technique??? lol
always loved the liner notes that said,
Jorma Kaukonen- guitar, vocals
Jack Casaday- bass, eyebrow
@@SusanHeaton YES. absolutely.
Only other person to master it I know of is Archie Goodwin in
Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe novels ... & the actors who play him can't.
thx for a thorough laugh
I imagine growing up female with that surname required a ready sense
of humor during jrHigh & HS ... when really bad jokes are all the rage
What a gift to mankind.
Always loved the liner note's that said,
Jorma Kaukonen- Vocals, Guitar
Jack Casaday- Bass, Eyebrow
RIP Papa John. Thanks
Check out a typical Happy Mondays liner note
"Bass, Eyebrow" ---- Classic comment.
did it really say eyebrow?
@@timhitt9541 I believe it did. (but who cares)?
@@timhitt9541 if not we can add it in to our album or CD covers
Beautiful song! Wonderful Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Papa John Creach
Great song. The most underated guitar bass duo in rock period
Thanks for posting. I saw Hot Tuna several times, along with Papa John Creach. Papa always looked a bit frail. But, man! On the violin, he could wail. He always had a smile, and you knew he enjoyed playing to an ever appreciative audience.
This is so beautiful, am thankful for my older brother who had their albums, sad I never got to see them perform. Loved the sound of Papa John Creach’s violin, it all comes together…a pure masterpiece!
Jorma & Jack, still going strong in 2021!
I've been listening and watching them since the late 70's.
Awesome musicians and awesome men.
late '60s for me! couldn't agree more! I STILL go and see them when they are in my area
Jorma should be in the top 5! Who on that list can play acoustic guitar like him? None!
classic in any form, any venue, any rendition, song of life, water
I catch Hot Tuna every chance I get. They are still going strong. Jorma and Jack, an epic friendship.
Wish I had friends like that.
Brilliant!
If you dont know Jorma you don't know Jack!
Nice Eddie very nice
I have the t-shirt
Still have that T-shirt…
Amen, I didn’t nojack til last year
Papa john... this a GREAT composition !!! Thanks for the post!
One of the best songs of all time
A tuneful instrumental piece. True to it's title, like a stream it flows, springing out of a high mountain lake well above the treeline, then dropping and winding down through steep glacial carved canyons into grassy meadows and joining other waterways teaming with trout, that eventually run into the sea. Not what I would label as a song, An adventure in music.
@@kidrengo great description
@@kidrengo i picture it with small eddys and twigs caught for a moment and flowing down stream again
Nobody could jam better than Hot Tuna in their heyday! Turned my whole high school onto this band in the early seventies!
This song has been resident in my memory. Probably from before it was written. That's the kind of magic this music has.
Yes, it is waaaaay off the charts of magical.
My man and the dynamic trio never gets old
Hot Tuna Capital Theatre Passaic NJ One of 3 best concerts I ever went too in a very long list of concerts. Water Song was more than magical! Sublime!
Absolutely brilliant, fantastic
My favorite song with no words of all time
My generation had the best music
You kids!
I think Hot Tuna and the Workingman’s Dead album kind of signalled a new beginning for popular music in those days. They kind of circled back to their folk music roots and created something new and enduring.
Nice analysis. Agreed.
Doesn't get much better than this - could listen to this for hours. Thanks for the upload 👍
JORMA IS ONE OF THE BEST GUITARIST EVER.JACK IS AMAZING ON THE BASS ,PAPA JOHN , JACK DRUMS.🐟😎🎸🔊🎶☮️🎼
We drove from Lafayette LA to Houston to see them play. Got back to the dorm at 6:30 AM in time to freshen up for my math final. I got a C. But it was worth it!
Extra points for dead brain cells!! lol
Jorma will die with a guitar in his arms... he loves to play
And drove two lane HYW 90 thru every Po Dunk town to get there...... HOW MANY HOURS DID THAT TAKE.....
Fast forward.... what was the best decision?
Always a good deal when you got really high and still pulled a reasonable grade.
Thanks for posting Water Song I could listen to this song for hours...............
Always enjoy Jack's bass lines
I have been listening to JA and Hot Tuna since 1967.
They have made my journey though life much more loving. I'm so glad I found them. I just hope that more generations do period!!!
Dig PAPA! This record kept me from self harm when I was a kid!
Just what I needed this evening
I am going to see these guys on April 18 2023
Jorma has a place called the Fur ,Peace Ranch.
Only a few of the Airplane and Hot Tuna left...legends...
I just saw the boys tonight in Franklin Tennessee on February 18th 2022. They closed with this after an amazing show. It's amazing that it sounded just as good almost 50 years later
I absolutely love Jorma and Jack! Back in 1973 and much more now in 2020! Living legends to me!!
Hey Brian
Hot tuna and Quicksilver played the most free concerts in Golden gate Park around 73 4 and 5 Sammy Piazza was the drummer
THIS IS TRUE ,HOT TUNA,WHAT A GREAT BONDING OF MUSICIANS .FANTASTIC.🐟😎🎸🔊🎶☮️🎼 BOB
First heard them back in 1973 when I was in college on a show called "In Concert" simulcast on WBCN out of Boston, was completely taken by this song immediately went out and bought the album "Burgers". Still my favorite.
Fantastic. A classic for the ages. Burgers is one of my all time favorite albums by anybody, ever
This is a masterpiece
Yes it is
INCREDIBLE bass tone by Mr. Casady!! On a solid body Alembic to boot!
A lot of it is the Versatone amplifier that gives that growly distortion sound. A secret weapon, for sure!
Jack's bass tone. Damn right.
One of the first Alembics
@@jamestonguet1737 I never knew that
Possibly my favorite Alembic bass. But Phil Lesh also has some choice ones. A friend of mine ended up with Dave Torbert's (from the NRPS). But this one here, what a sound - even on my puny laptop speakers.
This was prime Hot Tuna as I remember them. Saw them 12 days earlier at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.
Perfection
The tone too. Big, fat, round and on the edge of fuzz. Always recognizable. Never too much. Always serves the song and adds a distinctive touch.
Beautiful crystal clear cool water.. put to music. ✌️
Saw there in Cincinnati in 1971 great show.
Awesome footage! So great to see a live, electric version from the early 70’s.
I was lucky enough to see them a lot in NY between '73 and '76. Just an awesome time for Tuna!!
Agreed Pete. They played all 4 years at Stony Brook (70-74) when I was there with the first and last years being acoustic. Then seeing them at the Academy of Music around Thanksgiving most years, along with summer shows at the Sunshine Inn (Asbury Park), Gaelic Park, etc.
@@jackwindrom253 I think we were at a lot of the same shows, I loved the Academy. Stoney brook was a pain to drive to, but so worth it.
Holy shit I was at this show had forgotten all about it till I saw this always thought that was such a great tune the whole night was great looking back
I remember being at this show. It was overcrowded due to the fact that it became a free show. The drugs flowed freely and the concert was spectacular, as the venue was just a local movie theater in Borough Park on New Utrecht Ave.
Oh the shows ,
I love that they played in Boro Park!
First concert I ever went to see: Hot Tuna at the Holiwood Paladium in the mid-70s. Joe Walsh and ELO were the two warm-up acts.
Once again, confirmation that the 70s had the best music. I got this album back then because of this song.. now recognized the title but forgot the tune. Wow.. just as good as then and a live video to boot. THANKS for uploading this and to youtube for putting it in my playlist.
AND just now.. after 50 years it hit me.. before taking off in various directions, intro notes sound like "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" (Vince Guaraldi, Schroder on Peanuts, plays it with his trio on youtube)
"Right on..."
Did you know that Vince Guaraldi was friends with the Grateful Dead in the early days and appeared on the photo on the back of Aoxomoxoa? He jammed with Jerry a bunch, even in a band that included Mike Clark of Headhunters. He did a lot more than compose the these to Peanuts!
Those were the days!
Alembic 1, their first fully built bass. The pickups were on rails as Jack wasn’t sure what he wanted so it was actually a prototype of sorts.
One of my favorite effing songs. My husband turned me onto it way back then. Nothing like this one ever since.
Don't know bout you guys out for me, this is still my love. Sitting there, watching these guys play so beautifully, and so happily just rocks my socks off to this day!!
My first time to hear this, so beautiful, what a treat.
Really appreciate these 'Tuna videos. I saw them a couple of months after these shows in Chicago at The Auditorium Theater. I was super lucky to score a couple of front row tickets, not scalped. Sat right in front of Jorma & looked Papa John right in the eye when he prowled the stage & stopped right in front of me. Best place in Chicago for sound!!
I was there. Good show...1974 was even better...
Love Hot Tuna. So many great memories from the 1970s. Saw them at Knebworth.
Their set at Knebworth was recorded and can be found on cd if you know where to look it's an incredible show very heavy.
Have the album and love this song ..must have played it 1000 times
one of my favorite live bands back in the day. Seemed every time I saw them they were just killing it!!!
Saw/Heard Hot Tuna last night and they closed with this. I have loved this song for nearly 50 years now ! And they opened with Too Many Years which is a beautifully sad song they recorded with Airplane in `89 when they reunited for the project. Great bookends to an awesome night of Hot F`n Tuna ! Jorma was playing the 70s songs with all the guitar effects originally added back in the day which I loved !!
My pops introduced me to this...outlaw father...guitar in hand and a smirk still in my head...best lesson ever....long live music and Love....this is THE VORTEX.
This is my wake-up alarm.
My sister gave me this album in the late 70's and I fell in love with this song I had never heard a guitar progression like this before. i was flat blown away!
Winterland I would see Hot Tuna Several Times.... pap John would sit in with Elvin Bishop as well... Those were the days my friend , I thought they would never end, and the sad truth... nothing stays the same for very long!! The 70's Music I witnessed first hand every friday or saturady at Winterland... Thank you Bill Graham!!
Just saw them in Tucson. Amazing as always. Tuna Love forever. Jack was on fire.
Wish I had known they were in tucson. Im in phx and would have gone. Ive never seen em live
It was a pleasure finding this on youtube.... I was at that concert (we called the place BananaFish Garden)
love this tune ...and love that papa john !!!!!! added treat
Whoa! I thoroughly enjoyed the flow of music with the flow of the musicians. Put together in sync. Perfect!
That's how we did it in our day way back when things were about real music✌✌🍄✌✌
Awesome. Thanks for posting.
I feel like I’ve waited my whole life for this video. I love these guys so much!
Worth the wait. This was HT in their prime. I saw them 12 days earlier in Santa Clara, CA. My 2nd concert.
Papa John was just muc
Ive seen Tuna quite a bit here in their later years, both electric Tuna and acoustic Tuna. Man do these guys have some devoted fans! I would have loved to catch them back in the day...✌
When Burgers came out it was astounding and this song was the highlight; it hit all the right tones and harmonics to satisfy us then and now; an instant classic ...and we knew it. There was so much great music then reaching heights from just 6 years earlier, an incredible era of growth and innovation. It wouldn't be near as amazing without Hot Tuna. THANKS!
Great footage!
Getting seated on an empty flight I recognised Jack..He asked me to join him in an empty seat....Two hours of absolute pleasure..
and I'm a bass player...Too cool
O you lucky duck
One of a kind, he is. A fantastic take on the possibilities of bass lines. Always loved his bent.
Jack! Amazing person! He invited me to the studio when Burgers was being remixed. That was a amazing experience. That was right before I got very involved with music. I just saw another list. Best bass players. Jack was not on the list. Folks have lost their sense of music! Or even understand what good music is.
I got to sit with Jimmy Carl Black in an empty (almost) bar down in Austin for about 4 hours in 1989. And he was not drinking at all. What a great night. I saw Hot Tuna about 2 weeks after the show in this video and was first in the door so I was front center (no seats ). John Hammond Jr was the opener.
The best of the best SF rock icons. Jack and Jorma are genius!
frisco was soooo hip back in the day...very amazed how it changed,,for the worse..came out of Nam and hung out before i hitched a ride /rides back to the Bronx , nyc ..now its worse than nyc
@@pgroove163 if you have a whole bunch of money its still a great place
@@pgroove163 I hear you. Mostly it's a bunch of angry people complaining about how the world is instead of doing something about it. Big change since Hot Tuna was a regular thing.
@@mojorayjones indeed :(
Sure brings you back to that original state of mind... where anything was possible. My heart just skipped a beat!
As someone who has seen Hot Tuna on many occasions along with very early Statship, all I can say is Hot Fuckin Tuna and both Jorma and Jack make some truly wonderful music. I was born in the Rock and Roll sweet spot and attended a University that was well connected to the music industry. Didn’t see everyone due to limited funds while a student…. Never saw Steely Dan, Thin Lizzy, Heart, however one Dead Concert or the Who, not to mention Led Zeppelin, Stones, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, and so many more, creates in my mind a great Rock Memory. Thank god for RUclips seeing as I lost a lifetime of vinyl and a sexy turntable.still think the best show I ever saw was ELP Brain Salad Surgery…well perhaps the Sympathy for the Devil at Madison Square Garden and Led Zeppelin in the early seventies at the Garden. That night I saw a Rock and roll god. Plant was just so concentrated as were Bonzo and Page. Seems like a lifetime ago but it was only fifty years ago. It’s ok to look back now and again. My last concert? Pearl Jam
I was blessed to see hot tuna at the Longshore men's hall in san francisco. I still remember cassidy on that base he was amazing.
This is beautiful.
I didn’t start playing bass until my early 50’s, Jack Casady is my bass guitar hero….love Jack and Jorma!
had the pleasure of seeing them close out both of their portchester shows this weekend with this beaut. if you don't know jorma,.......well you know the rest
Going to see them tonight in Franklin Tennessee. Will be my 5th or 6th time. Jorma solo was killer late 2021 in Nashville. Thanks for posting!!
RIGHT ON GENTLEMAN!
I always wondered if some of the most amazing cool stuff i saw LIVE was captured.. im THRILLED!
God bless you guys always!
Why doesn’t this have five million views?
Great tune from a great band... thanks for posting this!
Musicians, musicians. That's HT. They play for the sheer joy of playing. Which is why they are among the preeminent bands of ALL time.
Always Play....🙏
The exact same is true of The Grateful Dead, played for sheer love of music. As Wavy Gravy said after Jerry Garcia passed away, the Dead created a ball of joy they sent out to audiences, who fed off it and sent it right back to the band.
