I bought my first VSOH last summer and it was very leggy, so I just did kind of what you did and wrapped the vines around in the soil to see if it would get more full. And it worked! I was always intimidated by these because they look so delicate. But they’re ridiculously easy to care for. Yours are so amazing and full! Hopefully one day mine looks the same. Great video Jeff! (but please sharpen your pencil 😂)
I chuckled over your "apparently I need new pruning shears" comment. Yep, nothing like discovering stuff like this when doing a demonstration! Keep up the good work!
Hi! Thank you for this video! I am so curious as to how it went with the clippings you put in the soil to fill out the foliage … how does the plant look now? 🤓
We have been renovating our bathroom, my SOH was sitting on top of a box since the summer. I just picked it up today. The strings grew into the box and around all the stuff. It’s about 6 feet of light green strings. Hopefully it gets darker. Thanks for all the great tips, I may have to propagate mine soon.
My sister-in-law gave me a tiny/scrawny plant, but I’m excited to have it. I trimmed it a bit and put some tiny leaf cuttings on spag moss in a clear covered container…sort of a mini greenhouse. The cuttings are growing and I think it’s time to put them in a small pot so I will take your advice and put them in small terracotta pot with well draining cactus mix 🤞also I didn’t know they liked so much sun so that is helpful. I’m going to also cut more vines and try water in the future. 🙏 for another great video. On a separate note…I believe I have my first thrips sighting 😮 I had a monstera that had been on the decline and so I chopped the whole thing down. I put some nodes with leaves in water and some wet sticks in moss. I also have the original pot chopped all the way down with only one leaf. I was looking at the leaves in the water and noticed a clump of something on the underside and after I got my magnifying glass I could see the off white elongated bug crawling!!!!! Those leaves hit the trash in seconds!! OMG thankfully it was a large plant I kept in its own pot sort of away from all the rest. I’m wondering if I should just dump the pot of soil in the compost or wait and see? What do you think?
Sounds like you got thrips....sorry to hear that. I guess it is entirely up to you. I will clean out the pot and reuse them. Wash it out with water and rubbing alcohol and it should kill all bugs. I don't think thrips live in soil, but I would still discard the soil just in case. Good luck....I am trying to get my hands on systemic to once and for all kill thrips lol
Wow, your SoH's has gotten sooo long! It's beautiful. I'm kinda jealous because I've been waiting for months for the Home Depot, Lowe's or nursery near my house to get these in and no luck. It's at the top of my wishlist. Anywho, thanks for sharing n have a good one, Jeff!😇🙏
Such a beautiful plant and a great video. It's a great plant for propagation. Just cutting the stems or a pair of leaves (butterfly method) and planting them directly in the soil is the best way to propagate them and have a fuller pot 💜I propagate mine every spring
wow! I never had luck propagating in water. Or maybe i am impatient LOL, I had great success with the butterfly method. Which is basically what you did at the end there with the 2 leaf cutting and the tuber :)
My mom bought me a VSOH last october and it's at least doubled in length and volume. It's constantly flowering. I untangled it all today because I want to propagate some strands and it took me almost 2hrs to untangle it all! I'm going to fill up a prop box with butterfly clippings and see what happens. Have a couple in water too, but I don't like having to transition from water to soil.
This video is perfect for me as I just happen to be gifted a 1 inch pot of string of hearts. I tried to research the care for the string of hearts, but many have confused me by saying spray and keep moist, others keep dry. I want to thank you, for the basic care of this plant and I hope I don’t kill this tiny string, lol.
you know what. I have about 3 propagations of string of hearts. One has about 3 trailing strands and the others have good growth, they just having cascaded over the pot yet lol. All this to say, I barely water it, but I spray it literally every two days. Have been doing this since September and it's still green and growing...*shrugs* lol
Hi there! I’m a new subscriber and I just found your channel from a comment you left on another channel. I love my String of Hearts! I haven’t tried to propagate it yet but I’ll probably do it in the Spring, just to make my pot a bit fuller. Thank you for sharing! 💜💚🪴🌵
Your string of hearts looks beautiful and healthy. I have always found this plant grows so well for me in my aussie environment, i have propogated it many different ways and have found that the one way that always Fails for me is when i take the leaves off the stems when propping in water.i dont know why but i find that when i remove the leaves the stems seem to rot, so i leave them on and not a problem. 😊
Normal house temps are typically fine for propagations. I recently did a heat mat propagation experiment and the new growth did so much better on the heat mat one
String of hearts has been on my wish list for a loooong time. If you know of a reputable online shop, would love to get one. Also....Love your t-shirt, looks like my home state! :D
It took me a year to understand my string of hearts but I think we’re friends now. Current plant is third generation from long dead mother plant that I struggled with.
The only slight difference is that mine requires regular watering. It doesn’t like to dry out. I struggled because all the care info I saw when I first bought the original plant was to allow the soil to dry completely.
Hey! New to SOH, I have mine small babies on a I think a 6" pot, but it's kinda deep, should I put them in a more shallow pot? Thanks Forsythe info and great video!
My love hate of this plant. They look beautiful, hence why I loved them and ended up getting one. Then it went through a phase of neglect haha, then after that I decided to propagate it, went through some neglect again during that phase but still seemed to survive to an extent. I recently and finally took the propagation out of their prop box and potted them up. Some leaves don’t look so hot and others look ok, but they’re in a pot now. Looks like some are giving off some shoots. So time will tell if I created a mess or actually did some good 🤞🏼 I feel bad for all of my plants that are not on moss poles. All my poles get like 100% of my attention and all of my potted plants are like an after thought 😬 😂😅😢
@@Dyeguy117 I had it for a couple years and then it just didn't get the care of that it needed. I propagated some in water and left it there until the water got stinky and then I just threw it out lol
I think I may be only person that does not like string of.....anything. I liked the video nonetheless. I do have a string of dolphins that my best friend bought me (and one for herself) for us to grow together virtually. Hers is hanging, mine is just growing straight up!!!! This little plant knows me. 😆😍
Is care the same for a variegated SOH? One of my local nurseries have some in 2" pots so I was thinking of getting one. Although it being so small, has me a little nervous.
Hello, my question has nothing to do with ur string of heart ( personally I'm not into the string plants) but do u find urself watering ur Selby often? I'm watering ( maybe) every 3 days & Selby's as we know luv moisture & the leaves will totally droop but bounce back once watered. Is this normal ? Thank U
I have a 'Selby' in a 6" plastic pot - same pot and potting medium as bought from the seller. I grow mine in medium light (~5 ft. from a west-facing wall of windows) and less than 30% humidity. I've noticed that the leaves begin to curl/ droop if I don't give the plant water every 3 days or so. I'm always amazed that this plant could need more water, but it does.
@@EverythingPlants I hung it outdoor so light should be ok. However, I haven't change the soil or fertile since I got it 3 years ago. Any particular fertilizer you recommend? Thanks for your help.

Hello Dee. You will have a lower chance of rot if you remove the leaves from the stem that will be sitting in water. I always give my props a bright spot (no direct sunlight)
I showed the hygrometer in the video with humidity being 33% upstairs and 22C for temperature. The temperature will be about the same in the basement plant room, but I add humidifiers down there to keep it above 50%. 👍
I love untangling SOH. It is so calming. I would love to get hold of that knot at the lower parts of yours. Ha!
