As it happens, the crystals have been fully explained as not technically being the Ideal Masters, but still representing them. Valerica suggests they could be conduits the Masters use to communicate and otherwise interact with things, and we see the exact same type of crystal in Battlespire, labeled as "Ideal Master." The way it seems to work is that the Ideal Masters don't physically exist anymore, and probably have invisible forms inside the Cairn, with the crystals being a sort of tool they use. My guess is that feeding on souls so much did something unusual to them, and they actually can't do much beyond what the crystals allow. The one in Battlespire speaks that way, and in Skyrim they drain you as if feeding on your own soul, so Valerica's idea definitely makes sense just from what we can see in games.

The ideal masters maybe found a way to do the same, or to reach the same level of power as a daedra allowing them to create the soul cairn or at least have it become part of their being

I may be missing remembering, but I recall that Durnehvir was considered invincible even before the fall of the dragon cult. Before he sought out the Ideal Masters.
I am also probably miss remembering that Durnehvir had to wait out the Vampire, then get his lessons from the Ideal Masters, so he really got screwed on that. It also means that all the necromancy power he displays is what he came up with.
Now time for the tin hats. Their is a good chance that Never Dieing has been part of his name for longer than his dark deal. And I don't think the Ideal Masters have any part of his soul. Mostly as they don't need it to have the Soul Carin corrupte his flesh. In the Soul Carin you can steal your soul back from the Masters. It is a miscellaneous objective that removes the debuff. I use this and some dialogue as evidence to support the hypothesis that the Soul Carin creates a biological dependents on the native energies. I also theorize that Durnehvir can respawn wherever and whenever he pleases, he just hast to choose the Soul Carin to not have a death spiral.
Short version, the Soul Carin is Durnehvir's life support.

When you go to the Soul Carin, if you don't decide to become a vampire to gain access, Serana kills you and soul traps you. When you come back, she has dialogue implying a piece of your soul will forever be there, and the space left is filled up with a bit of the Soul Carin itself. You have a Dragon Soul. You walked out just fine with a little bit, you don't feel the pull to go back even with the same kind of fusion happening to you. You have a bit of a patch job, but still a dragon soul that lets you do as you please. I think Durnehviir sacrificed more than he's letting on. I don't think his soul is even a dragon soul anymore. I think he's more or less a flying extension of the Soul Carin itself at this point, and the dragon might transform into another sky crystal at some point. I suspect that was the necromantic power he bargained for.

But there is a mod you can have a serpentine dragon so with my imagination and my own Skyrim story my serpentine dragon is called sahrootok. Sahrotaar's twin brother but they were apart . because Mirrak took control of Sahrotaar for thousands of years. But again with my story sahrootok was one of the few dragons reblbled anginst Alduin and kaalgrontiid and the dragon cult to save the people in the first Era But again when in Skyrim when I meet Sahrootok he was cursed and sealed in a book inside of Bleak falls borrow. And when I defeated the draugr at the wall of power when you get the word. And the pick up the dragon stone tablet. And that's when I saved Sahrootok and released him from the book. Another option to free Durnehviir would be to make keeping him more costly to the Ideal Masters than letting him go. The Soul Cairn operates like a business or a bank. So long as their profits in souls increases, they are pleased. If it drops, they panic. So, for instance, if Durnehviir started consuming souls that enter the Cairn faster than the Ideal Masters can gain them, a certain dragon-souled mortal offering to take Durnehviir of their hands in exchange for a large cache of souls might be an attractive offer, provided the Ideal Masters were desperate enough. The Ideal Masters keeping Durnehviir is like some millionaire keeping a pet tiger. Sure, they might technically own the tiger, but they can't control it.

Despite the Ideal Masters being conniving manipulating bastards, they might have kept their word on setting Durnehviir free once Valerica died. You see the greatest liars always have truths to their deals/tales. If Valerica dies then the Masters might have to set Durnehviir free from the Soul Cairn. Vampires maybe ageless, but they’re not truly immortal. Valerica could easily be slain just as any vampire by a powerful and skilled individual such as a Dragon or sorcerer.

To be immortal is to truly counter mortality - therefore you can't be killed either (and let's not forget, from natural point of view, there is not much difference whether you die of illness, old age or violent death - either way, your body is too damaged to carry on its functions).
