Wow!! That was Smooth Criminal before Smooth Criminal! Gotta love MJ for using inspiration the way its intended. He pulled from so many GREAT artists, he couldnt help but be the greatest.
People really have no clue of what these Great Actors and Dancers had to put up with because of skin color and still put on a MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE,💯✊🏽
That's Bill Bailey, singin' and dancin! He was Pearl Bailey's brother. And yep... he did the "Moonwalk" decades before MJ. (but he called it "The Backslide") Love this stuff!
It's actually John Bubbles, the amazing dancer who influenced not only Michael Jackson, but Bob Fosse, Fred Astaire and James Brown, plus countless others. But full disclosure: I only know this because I just read a review of his biography and this link was provided. What an amazing sequence though.
Kind of, Michael Jackson didn't wear a derby, he wore a Fedora. He was actually dressed like Fred Astaire in bandwagon. He took a lot from both people and no I don't mean took like stole, he obviously admired both men. Look up band wagon and you will see Fred Astaire was the original smooth criminal. However the backslide or moonwalk should and is credited to Bill Bailey.
What really ticks me off is there is a Hollywood branch of the NAACP and what they should have done is try to get as many interviews from these performers as possible. I have seen many Hollywood documentarys they are proud of their people and want testimonials to record. Butterfly McQueen didn't pass away unil the mid 1980's Marpessa Dawn BLACK ORPHEUS Mid 2000's and many others we could have learned so much from what they experienced. Thank God for these movies at least
Best thing about this song is that, in the narrative of the film, it's a villain song. John Bubble in the movie plays an evil gangster who mostly does evil gangster stuff, and then suddenly he steps onto the stage and steals the entire movie for three minutes.

This scene and that one Fred Astaire scene
I watch this over and over, and it's wonderful every time.
Class , talent, style, and charisma !!! They dont make them like this no more!!

This is back in the day when people were effortlessly talented.
No. Years of work on circuits across America. Black vaudeville.

The original Sportin’ Life in “Porgy and Bess”. One of the greats.

Great Song performance
2.04 a variation of the backslide dance

Yeah, that’s where he copied his whole style.
@@henrystory3011 a lot but not all, he took from a lot of the tap dancing greats, including Fred Astraire etc
@@jesuisdavid1 And Fred Astaire took quite a bit of his swag from...John W. Bubbles, so...
That is NOT Bill Bailey...Google is easy
I saw in lovecraft territory
A most wonderful movie, but this scene stole the show.
