gang gang I like to make notes on videos I like so I can go back to the different parts for a refresher. I’ve been feeling super stuck with my drone work and want to get to each of these tips quick.
These were so helpful!! I just bought a DJI Mini 2, and I get so nervous flying it 🤣 But as you said, the more you practice, the more comfortable you become. Thank you, Matti!
it's insane how easy it is to fly drones now - I taught my 6-year-old brother to fly one and made a video. Love your stuff Matti you're such an inspiration man
It's interesting how I personally started playing around with some of these flight patterns some time after I got my drone, and I could immediately tell the difference in shot quality and overall experience for the viewer once I mastered the directional flight coupled with smooth gimbal movement. Put a smile on my face to hear you mentioning that! :)
A good "starter" drone is the Sky Viper S1700. I started with that, and Matti is right- If you can keep one up in the air while feathering the throttle, DJI is cake.
Just got a Maic MIni last week, and that is m y exact thoughts. I lost my first drone 3 times (first 2 are my own fault and the 3rd is my dad). Luckily it was only $150.00 but still. I plan on taking out the mavic mini once the snow melts.
Thank You! This is very helpful! I just ordered that little drone to practice with when I can't fly my new DJI. It's like an instrument - the only way to get better is to practice and I really dig your recommendations on specifics. Thank You!
These are very useful tips. I think it is important for flyers to check the conditions on apps like UAV forecast or Weather by Tomorrow to prevent any unpleasant surprises.
Great tips about knowing your settings and how to bail yourself out WHEN (not if) something goes wrong. Had mine flip to atti mode for some reason and I wish I had taken the time to learn before the crash how to handle that situation.
Yessss, on the Learn Make Repeat! I use your term RUclips University a lot, and when people ask "how did you learn that?" That's what I tell them, including the names of some of my "professors" Prof McKinnon, Prof Haapoja, Prof Hau, Prof Lizzie, Becki and Chris (too many of you rad dudes).... all of you are an inspiration!
This is SUCH a great set of tips thank you Matti. The thing about getting flustered is just so bang on. I recently got a Mavic Air and started practicing and was feeling pretty good. Then I rocked up to a client job and suddenly I was all thumbs. It's a whole different thing performing under pressure. The only thing that's going to overcome that is practice hours - and lots of them.
Another tip I would say about the tilt feature is to turn the sensitivity down in the settings so the motion isn't too fast. Default settings are way too quick for cinematic motion 🙂
All great advice, well done! I'd also add that using a visual observer is very helpful as well. You can get caught up in the shot pretty easily and lose track of the drone so having someone keep an eye on the bird at all times is not only a good thing but for most countries a legal thing. When possible you can also use the VO as a subject in some footage.
Thanks for the info Matti! Just got a drone after getting good at a toy drone. And I was out in the field yesterday practicing. Hope you had a great Canada day.
The only one video I have seen since I got my drone the other day, which has helped soo much in figuring out what and how to practice the drone!!! Thank You!!!!!! Going out now to practice
I agree with everything in this video. It's super scary to do some of the moves you are talking about. But the results are often reflected in the scariness. Thanks for great content Matti! Big fan.
Great Tips... When I first started I would fly following lines on the ground in the shape of a square. Then I would master that going both directions. After that I would try and do it with the camera facing in the same direction the entire way. Also would try doing a figure eight while keeping camera on a certain focus point...
Thanks Matti for the rad tips, been flying a done for while now but never tried circling around combined with gimble tilt, heading out to try it now. Really like to new intro and name of this channel. Thanks for all the amazing videos, been learning a ton form you =}...
I've had to use my drone a lot more as I have a part time job doing real estate photography and video. It's been good but I think I still need more practice!
All really valuable tips Matti. And like you emphasized practicing is key, also LOVE the low shots! I always ask myself what shot can I only get with a drone (vs say filming out of a helicopter or using a gimbal) and those shots tend to be my favorites as they are unique 🙂
Hey Matti, Long-time follower (Since the early TF days)! I must say, finally some cinematic influencer/guide tells his audience to practice flying with a toy-drone. There is a whole community devoted to drone racing who put emphasis on practicing, practicing, and practicing, either with toys or simulators. So, thanks for letting people know that flying with a drone is not that easy and very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Learn to fly without GPS, and you'll become a master! Thanks, keep up the vids, I really like them :).
So many people flying their drones over cities and in populated areas. Practice is so important! Just wondering if you have an SFOC (special flight operators certificate) when you go fly. Ive never understood the laws here in Canada, especially when posting it on a monetized RUclips video. Thought?
It all depends on the size of your drone. If you are flying something over 1kg (Phantoms) you need to fly 75 meters away from roads, cars, buildings etc. If your drone is 250g to 1kg (Spark) then you just need to fly 30m from those obstacles. I am curious about that shot that Matti shows flying over what looks like Lake Louise. Did he have an SFOC for that? You aren't allowed to fly in National Parks.
I guess that depends if Transport Canada views flying a drone on a monetized RUclips channel as flying commercially. But if you fly commercially you need to either apply for a SFOC or fly under an exemption. But even if you fly under an exemption you need at least $100,000 liability insurance, proof of ground school training, among other minor things.
Also another great tip >>>>>>watch guys like you and how you do it :) I am a noob but i want to get into this so much. I have just got a Visuo 809 and cant wait for the weather to calm down so i can practice practice practice and with the 20 ish minute fly time i will have plenty of chance for that :)
Hey Matti how's it going? I really like what you're doing with the channel! I've been following you for quite some time now but never subscribed for some reason. Now I have! I prefer this kind of you, not when you do stuff like Peter and Casey because that's more of their thing. You know SO much about filmmaking, much more than them, that I think people will love you more and more. Don't get me wrong, I fuc@%& love Peter and Casey, been following them for a while. I think It's hard when a friend is so successful that you might try to copy a style, but I think this style, you in front of camera, teaching these gems, is what makes me watch you. Keep it up mate, you're a TRUE filmmaker.
It would be cool if you would how us your hands controlling drone while flying and the footage at the same time. please? Great tips, I just want more. Thanks again for your time. I always enjoy your videos
Thanks so much, very nicely explained, can you please share the best settings for DJI Mavi Air, also what needs to be checked before flying, like settings of the Drone. Thanks again will be waiting.
Drone related question for you Matti. What color setting do you use with your DJI? I know that you usually like to shot in a LOG format, but do you use DLOG with your drone footage?
Wou I knew it that’s exactly how I practice ....the only problem in my place is ..there is too much interference and windy ..so I might be good but I loose connection often ..or is too sunny and I can barely see the screen
Thanks for the tips matti! Nv tried flying low before actually, will definitely try that to add a different perspective for my future travel videos. I also love combining gimble tilts with flight movements as well, those multi dimensional stuff looks surreal! Appreciate all the tutorials so far, they have been really helpful in my journey to produce more videos :) cheers to more videos! Keep going matti! - mattpan from singapore, the wedding vow
Good day sir, im using a mavic air, and what mode should i be using when im going to practice for hours to master and get used to the movement ? Should i be using Tripod Mode or Normal Mode ?
You All realize that in the USA if you expect to be compensated for your drone footage in any way (Even on U-Tube) you are required to Study for and pass a written test on the Federal Aviation Regulations under Part 107 concerning where when and how you are allowed to fly a drone (Quad Copter) for compensation. Even if you are flying for FUN you are required to possess a federal certificate and that number is required to be on or in the drone. Fines for noncompliance can go as high as $330,000.
I’ve had a blast playing around with the Mavic Pro and just learning a few interesting moves while I wait to certify under Part 107! Thanks for the tips with the drone 🤙🏻
Eyyyyyyyyyy! Drones are my jam. I love hearing anyone's perspective on how to use drones. My channel is dedicated to teaching and experiencing how to build race, and fly racing drones, which is a whole other can of works for drones. Drones are the future. Be safe with your flying!!?
As usual, you have delivered a very helpful and informative vlog. For me, there is just one problem: being ADHD, I just HATE to practice! That's why I don't play the violin.
Hope you Canadians had a great Canada day and Happy almost 4th of July! Also I crashed my Onewheel haha. Details coming tomorrow
Matti what is your video settings for drone shots?
Thanks man! The whole long weekend was amazing. I even managed to get the drone up. I hope you didn't hurt yourself dude :-O.
Thanks mate! Hope that the canadian law about drones will change.. 90 meters limit without permit :/ That sucks big time!
Way too hot! We hit 47C with humidex near Ottawa!
Thanks for the video, love your work. Wanna create some stuff like that. Happy Canada Day from Las Vegas haha

Even as an experienced drone pilot these tips still help me. Always gotta nail the basics
A good "starter" drone is the Sky Viper S1700. I started with that, and Matti is right- If you can keep one up in the air while feathering the throttle, DJI is cake.
Just bought Mavic mini, and when I’m flying all I’m thinking is : don’t lose the drone don’t lose the drone😂
Nothing but 600$ in the air
Nothing but 600$ in the air

Yeah I just got a nice little parrot mambo drone for my bday that’s pretty maneuverable and I am so scared to crash it or lose it.
@@StephanieFerrante_ did the snow melt? Hows it going with the droning lol.
Good tips as always! Got my Mavic Air today and have a month left to practice before my 5 weeks of traveling through Australia and Bali
Thank You! This is very helpful! I just ordered that little drone to practice with when I can't fly my new DJI. It's like an instrument - the only way to get better is to practice and I really dig your recommendations on specifics. Thank You!

Matti! Those shots are GORGEOUS! I'd love to see a video on how you color grade drone footage. It's so rare to see it look as good as yours!
Thanks so much dude! I’ll try to put out another grading tutorial
Great tips Matti! Not enough people talk about just knowing your aircraft and know where all the features are
Yessss, on the Learn Make Repeat! I use your term RUclips University a lot, and when people ask "how did you learn that?" Great insight! That shot in Iceland at 4:54 is always so incredible
It was other worldly!
Another tip I would say about the tilt feature is to turn the sensitivity down in the settings so the motion isn't too fast. Default settings are way too quick for cinematic motion 🙂
Awesome tips! Everything you said made sense. Thanks sooo much!!!
All great advice, well done! I'd also add that using a visual observer is very helpful as well. I loved your video specially your advices to get tiny drone for practice I just ordered one I can even practice while indoor sitting on my couch😀😀
Thanks Matti! You're definitely a master drone pilot! Your camera moves are so smooth and accurate. Always look forward to seeing your drone footage.
I just got a spark a couple days ago!!! Super pumped to use it this summer!
I agree with everything in this video. It's super scary to do some of the moves you are talking about. But the results are often reflected in the scariness. Thanks for great content Matti! Big fan.
"you can fly any drone if you can fly one of these"
me, an FPV pilot
*chuckles* im in danger
Participating in drone wars will also force you to git gud! haha
Haha that shoulda been tip 6
Next merch drop needs a drone wars tee.
Brent Morris Sounds like a great idea
Thanks for tips! Got to go practice now!
Awesome tips Matti! I did this when i got my first drone as well. Everyday after work flew it down at the oval near my house and learnt the basics
You’re a drone beast! Thanks for nice tips, Matti! 🙌
Drone footage is awesome. Thanks for sharing these tips and ideas
Thanks for this Matti watching fr Australia. So happy to see u reach 1 M!!!
Thanks for the drone flying tips Matti.👍🏼 I have a drone and I have been practicing a lot to get better at flying it.
Drone footage looks so cool! I've always wanted to use one
Oh it’s so great!
They're so fun! I love it more than anything
They’re so fun.. I forget how powerful it is as camera!
REALLY GOOD video! Thank you. Informative and scenic. Two thumbs up.
Hey. I needed this when I got my first drone. Glad i saw this now though, I got the Mavic Mini now.
Matti, you da man! Thanks for these tips. Just got my first drone and this is the kind of info I needed to hear to get good at drone flying.
Thanks so much for the tips. Trying to get more drone footage in my videos as I build my channel.
Great Tips... When I first started I would fly following lines on the ground in the shape of a square. Then I would master that going both directions. I've had to use my drone a lot more as I have a part time job doing real estate photography and video. It's been good but I think I still need more practice!
Sam Kolder uploads an epic video of him flying drones and you teach us how to fly drones. Love it haha. Success goals
Haha I just saw that 😂 too funny.
And Mr. McKinnon made a video on drone boomerang
Practice Practice and more Practice... :)
Man, I envy you for the exotic locations... and beautiful visuals, drone moments.
Thanks for the video.
Really enjoyed the video! Thanks so much🙌🏽
Awesome tips! I just started flying recently and these tips are really helpful. Learning as I go
that shot of the guy in the canoe is perfect!
I always learn from your tips. Thank you again for a great video and sharing your knowledge.
All really valuable tips Matti. And like you emphasized practicing is key, also LOVE the low shots! I always ask myself what shot can I only get with a drone (vs say filming out of a helicopter or using a gimbal) and those shots tend to be my favorites as they are unique 🙂
I love the scenery/locations you've visited. So cool man.
Thanks for this. Just bought my first drone. Dji phantom 3 4k and got it yesterday. I have no idea how to fly it lol. So this helps!
Great Tips! Thanks for sharing.
Great tutorial, Matti! I need to do a bit more practice myself.

That canoe shot!

*Mavic's also weigh under that 1kg threshhold
what about the commercial aspect of flying on RUclips. I'm curious as this is something that i implement on my channel as well. As I use a Mavic Air.

which I'm sure the majority of those on RUclips do not have! Can't wait to see the updated drone laws that are supposed to come out this year!
Very nice Matti, thank you very much.
Also another great tip >>>>>>watch guys like you and how you do it :) I am a noob but i want to get into this so much. Its kinda funny because I was just looking up tutorials on getting the best shots with my drone. So thank you so much for this!
I love the shot at 4:53
Nice Matti! Very informativ and good! Well done
Awesome vid as usual dude thanks for the tips man more power to u!

It's about finding balance within the controls. Tricky as hell since they're on the opposite sides of each other
It would be cool if you would how us your hands controlling drone while flying and the footage at the same time. please? Great tips, I just want more. Thanks again for your time. I always enjoy your videos

Great advice, thanks!
I’ve been waiting for this!
Loved the tips Mate very useful clip for the new pilots...
Give me 5 tips to get a drone 😂😂😂
😂
Work
work, save money, learn to barter, have wealthy friends, grow money tree?
Guys, there's another option. Everybody has a GoPro, so just borrow it each time you're traveling. )
I have phantom 4 advenaced and Mavic mini ...phantom 4 advanced is machine compared to mini ..
Playing loads of OLD Grand theft auto (GTA) like GTA2 or similar helps quite a lot with the controls.
Thanks for the tips matti! Nv tried flying low before actually, will definitely try that to add a different perspective for my future travel videos.
