That's unusual packing for Jackson's - Usually every single item is individually wrapped and usually using repurposed packing materials. It's one of the best things about the. It's like Christmas unwrapping everything. So I was super surprised to see everything just under paper in your box.

There's a media from golden that is to add high flow. It needs to be diluted with water and then added to paint. That would work for your black better.

I really like them (and I have that hand painted colour chart too - it’s so useful and much better than just having a printed chart). 🎨 And thank you for the mention! What a lovely surprise that was. I’m finding the Montana acrylics to be the best so far - but of course they are actually designed for the markers. Haven’t looked too close at the price point yet, though. Molotow also makes refills & I have one still to try.

Coated with gloss will change some marker colours/tones. Matt medium also ok. I love the juiciness of acrylic markers. Can also blend on the page.

Love art hauls🥰 I've started using Golden heavy body acrylics & Liquitex soft body acrylics. The soft body acrylics come in a bottle that you can open all the way, but also had a nimple applicator (like a restaurant ketchup bottle). And with the soft body paint, you can use a small plastic condiment container and they don't dry out. BTW, my art haul yesterday was a new easel!!

I have never seen these refillable marker pens before either, but they look most useful. I have 2 Guerrilla 5” x 7” boxes with cases that hold a few accessories, one set up for pastels and the other for paints. They have two handles and a shoulder strap, they are great to just grab and go with everything you need inside. Also a French Resistance version roughly 9” x 12” you can use various sizes adjustable and carry a wet painting back attached to the outside. I just love them ! Have fun with your markers.

Wow Sarah, probably the most interesting art haul ever.... I'm interested in how you will mix with those markers. I have a midsized gorilla pochade but it's so heavy that I'm not a fan...I have a thinner box, open m too... but I want the kind Casey Baugh has, edge pro... That said I'm not a prolific plein air person and tend to fall back on watercolor because it's so much easier on the go.... I'd never heard of those acrylic markers though. Have fun with those. Can't wait to see how they work for you!..also I'm interested in the schmeke watercolor and quache...I use m. Graham, which I love. I went to a workshop with Mary Whyte, and she recommended them...they use honey, if u are interested. Many blessings!😉🙏

I always go back and forth with my plein air setup. Most days I like very minimal supplies and I'll balance everything on my lap. But other days I want my box so everything I need is right there and I don't have to dig through my bag. The 6x8 is great because it fits in my backpack, but I've had to get used to limited mixing space. I suppose it's not bad since the canvas is also so tiny lol

Late to the party here…yes, Montana markers are great…I also have a few. Molotow from Germany, who also make great acrylic markers and have an outstanding refill system for all of their products….they seem to be very eco-conscious. I think their price ranges are similar to Montana’s. I have stayed away from using a lot of acrylics (will use them some) because of the plastic waste issue, (how many acrylic painters will save up their acrylic waste water, drain off the water and save the “dried plastic bits” to later take to their local waste disposal center? ) That waste water with all its plastic mostly goes down the drain or when dried…in the trash. People love ❤️ the easy clean-up of acrylics, but there’s an environmental cost to that ease (as there is to almost any painting medium.) But when using acrylic markers that you fill as needed, waste is really cut down to a minimum. I think refillable markers are the way to go for typical acrylic use.

When you added blue to your mixed pen, you may have needed to use it a bit more before the mixed color came through the nib. There was surely some old color still in the pumping mechanism and in the nib, so you probably saw minimal or partial results in your initial, small Scribble post-blue.

I bought molotov or is it molotow acrylic markers(from Utrect) many years ago and they have a similar pumping action. They are still sitting mostly full in a storage container. The acrylic paint comes out either too much or too fast plus the colors seemed off and a little smelly if I remember correctly which might have been caused by numerous things. But even if the colors had been beautiful, there was still the leaking problem.

I use the Liquitex acrylic ink in glass bottles with the droppers and Dr. PH Martin india inks in the Daler Rowney (sp) Mixed Media Markers. I only filled them about 3/4 of the way in case I hated them. I have the hard plastic nib so they're like a fine point Posca Pen. I LOVE them. They've been in the pens a little over a year with no issue. I store them vertically, tip up, shake them up when I'm ready to use and they start right up.
I have the Montana Markers, purchased prefilled, and I store those horizontally like my other acrylic marker pens with no issues. I give them a good shake and they start up with no issues.
I have a kit of Golden High Flow that I haven't used yet, which came with their brand empty markers. Maybe I'll set them up and post an uodate if they can be stored horizontally.

I have similar acrylic marker that came with the paint in them, not a great experience a lot of trouble with the nib/brush end drying after use (even though I put the brush cover on after use), this made the brush unusable as the paint would not flow to the brush anymore, I stored these on their sides as advised, really annoying as they were expensive.

@@SarahBurnsStudio well I used the smallest nib, and the color was cerulean ( lots of sediment) it worked for a while then plugged up☹️ ClaudiaSJI

Very cool to watch! I’m wondering if you have to remove and wash out the nibs between uses, or do they stay wet. Also, the paint looks quite matte when dry, whereas Liquitex has a bit of a gloss. Is that correct or just the direct view giving it a matte look? Thanks Sarah! 😃

So far they have been staying moist. I used them yesterday after over a week of them sitting with the nib pointing up. These lean more towards a satin if not matte finish when dry, except for really thick areas.

I’m now at the part where you’re talking about the paint markers and the paint pooling into the cap when they’re stored on their side. I’d read that the Liquitex readymade markers also have to be stored on their side, so that’s what I’ve done with mine and I haven’t had a problem with the paint pooling in them. So I don’t know whether this is just a thing with the Montana markers? I’ll continue watching now... :)

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  3 года назад +1

I think it's because the Golden high flow is more runny than Montana or liquitex brand paint. So I've been storing them tip up, and 7 days later the nibs are still completely wet and flow instantly. I think I'll just need to keep monitoring them. I might also try storing them on the side but with the nibs just slightly elevated so it can't pool in the cap

@@SarahBurnsStudio This is great news! I think if you're using them regularly, it shouldn't be a problem to store them tip up!

The marker experiments look really interesting. I have a few of those I bought to put acrylic ink in, but I haven't really played with them much. Why don't you try another experiment when you play with them, have some dry brushes and a waterbrush or wet brush handy and after you make a mark you can go in with a brush to draw out the edges and paint more with it. I like your idea of a few just grey markers to do quick tonal studies.
I like the guerilla boxes but they are too heavy for me. I have a real cigar box that can attach to my tripod but I think I'm going to try and make a thin wood box for a new box.
    thanks for the great video!

I think I got the idea of getting one from one of your videos, so thanks! haha, happy painting!

Golden will often send the hand painted color charts for free. Jackson’s probably got them from Golden. I don’t think Jackson’s is doing them.
I’m getting a free one for taking a class with Elizabeth St Hilaire.
Also if you get home and the paints I the pallet are still wet put it in the freezer for the next time. Take the pallet from the freezer when you go it doesn’t take too much time to defrost.
Maybe try Golden liquid acrylics instead of the hiflow to avoid the leakage especially in the big markers.

I know this was two years ago so you might already know but these are defective markers. The foam bit that is the tip has actually been changed. Linda from beginners mind Art mind, RUclips channel actually has a full length RUclips part one and two on these markers alone And talking to the company.

At least I know I'm not the only one who gets paint on my hands. Except I also a bit of a disaster and do things like get paint on a brand new shirt. Yeah, if there is a piece of clothing that doesn't have even just a little paint on it then it isn't mine!

It’s better if you take your time letting the paint flow and it will get activated nicely. Pumping too much only is hard on the nibs and doesn’t make it happen any sooner. Sort of like pressing an elevator button. Enjoy your new toys
