How Much Does it Cost to Run a Hot Tub?

- Is a hot tub expensive to operate? What are the ongoing expenses of owning a hot tub? How much is it going to cost each month on your electric bill? That's what we're looking at in this video.

The 3 main expenses once you've purchased and installed your hot tub are:
1. Electricity
2. Filters (cleaning & replacing)
3. Chemicals to treat the water
In total, you can expect the monthly average of all of that to be $40 or less, and the filter expenses are not monthly. You'll just rinse them off every 3-4 weeks with a hose or kitchen sink sprayer.
Then, about every 3 months you'll do a chemical soak.
The product I love for the chemical soak only requires a 1 hour soak if you use hot water. That's great as it gets you back in action quickly and doesn't require a backup set of filters as you would want if you did an overnight soak.

Another great money saver is to use a product to remove the biofilm that can gunk up your pipes and cause your chlorine or bromine and shock to work less efficiently.
Less efficiency = adding them more often, increasing the expense.
When I change my water (about every 3 months) I always use Oh Yuk Cleaner to break down and remove bacteria, biofilm, and a build up of other contaminants in your pipes.
Just pour it in and turn on the jets and let it go to work before you drain your tub. Then, just rinse it out, wipe it down, refill, and you're good to go!

All expenses combined, your hot tub should not cost more than $40/month to operate under most circumstances. That's a small price to pay for all the enjoyment you, your family, and your friends will get.

using my hot tub for its first winter..Mind you im in WI and so far its being $100 a month on average during the winter!This is with it set at 101F.I love having a tub and will deal with it but my wife is not so forgiving.Mine is covered and out of the wind for the most part and this is reality.$30 a month is what it was about during summer.Everyones is going to be different but this is what it is in a cold climate

Hi Maria. Shock would be about every 7-10 days (about 1/8 cup). Depending on how many people use it and how many days a week, you might want to add sanitizer every 2-3 days (maybe 1/4 cup). But I like bromine tablets in a floater for my sanitizer (I put in about 3/week). That makes it very easy.

So you drain the water every three months?
Can you empty and not use a hot tub during hot months?
Can you switch to bromine on the same water you used chlorine?

I use my hot springs envoy hot tube about 5 days a week I think the is much higher than 20-30 dollars?
Hi Jim. Overall, $20-30 is an average. But the temp you set it to, the weather where you live, and the frequency with which you use it, all effect the total cost.
For example, I like my hot tub to be at 98 so my toddler and I can soak without issue. But if I kept mine at 104, the heater obviously will be working harder and more often to keep it to that temp.
And somewhere colder will cost more too since again, the heater will have to work harder.
But I'd be surprised if it was significantly above $30 for yours as that's a pretty nice hot tub, and as long as you keep the lid closed in between uses, it should be fairly energy efficient.

How much will the electrian charge to hook up the 230 volt
Make sure you have it wired correctly. Just got our new one last month and can’t use it yet. Electrian wired 30 amp when we need 50 amp. 🤦🏻♀️
We decided if we are rewiring for this, we’re just updating our box at the same time. Went from $1000 to estimate of 4-5000. All because we wanted a hot tub.

How about a tutorial for AirBnB owners who have very busy spas. Our hot tub gets heavy usage by multiple visitors, probably 300 or more days a year. Guests often don’t shower or clean their feet, and I end up shocking the tub after every guest, using anti-foam and clarifiers, changing the filter monthly, and changing the water at least three times a year. This may all seem like overkill, but it is the fewest hours of labor for me, which is a big deal - and a negative review (“the hot tub was dirty!”) could cost me hundreds of dollars in bookings. Still, I’d love your thoughts - my method has been developed over the past three years, but I’d love to spend less and do less for the same results!
