    I've owned 4 corollas over the past 15 years. I currently own a 2010 S model 5 speed manual. I really don't care how fast a car can go, I care about how long a car will go. I don't need all the fancy bells and whistles, what I do want is simplicity, practicality, and functional components. I'm getting 31 mpg city and 38 mpg hwy. My corollas have spent more time on the road than in a shop. The corolla is a safe bet plain and simple.

    The lower trim level Mazda 3 has a knob for where you want the air, how hot or cold you want it, and how strong. It's not dual zone, but it's way more simple and to the point.

    Hey Jason, I just watched this, after buying a certified pre-owned 2011 Mazda 3 a month ago here in Los Angeles (a one owner lease, 44,000 miles, the car is still like new). I agree with everything you say, and am really happy with the choice. Thanks for such a well done, stylish car comparison!

    I’ve owned a Toyota Corolla, a Honda Accord, and now a Mazda 3 Hatchback.
    I liked all 3.
    The Mazda looks like a smiling cartoon character and there’s a rattle in the door.
    Other than those 2 complaints, I like it very much and would buy another.

    YOU ARE JOKING. Putting side by side a 2.5 Liter Engine near a 1.8 L car????? Of course you cant compare. But YOU do. I think it's unwise.

    •  10 лет назад +1

      Exactly, I was about to comment about how dumb is to compare 2.5 with 1.8 then talk about performance, XRS is 2.4L would made more sense.

    • @ThePlatypotamus
      @ThePlatypotamus 10 лет назад +6

      Daniel Guzmán Actually it's not. It depends on many factors. Also this guy is an idiot for thinking the S model is supposed to be an engine/performance upgrade. It's just a trim for interior and exterior. Watch this and you'll see corollas have tons of performance to them (especially the 9th gen). 2006 corolla beats a 2011 accord 3.5L v6 easily and stock. /watch?v=FM8bp4Y7QqA&list=UUeU4Je-YcH6Tr0P_5ZjOEcQ

    The Carolla is a commuter car, a low maintenance city transporter and a good value. Why are we comparing it to sports cars? At some point people get tired of wrenching on beaters and just want to get up and go and not spend weekends swearing under ramps in driveway. This car represents freedom and less worry.

    Eh, I don't care. I just bought a corolla 2013 corolla s the other day. It's fun to drive for me. I don't care about racing. I love the quality of the ride and the interior layout. Traded in my 08 LE for one and it's been a blast. I'm not drag racing, I just want something with some pick up, can fly through the gears, but at the same time has a smooth ride. Sold me. I think the corolla looks better inside and out too. That's just me though. :D Fair review imo, good job.

    Never liked Corollas, Mazdas always brought a better game to the table. For example; compare 2003 models of this 2, Mazda always had better style, better looking interior and exterior. Even in 2003 models of Mazda 3 & 6 had steering wheel 6 controls something stupid that corollas did not included until late models. That's something that cars need for better safety.

    I got the 2009 corolla in black. It looks amazing, and i don't know why everyones complaining about them being slow. That things a damn rocket if you give it some gas. the 2009 corollas do 0-60 in 8.4 seconds, which is ridiculously fast for a corolla. The only models that beat it are the 2010 XRS (7.0 seconds) and the 2005 XRS (5.0 seconds). All the other models (including the 2011 models) do around 9-10 seconds. Id take the corolla over a mazda just for the comfort though, I'm 6'3 and i tried driving a mazda 3, it was not fun lol.

    • @jamesbarrett5131
      @jamesbarrett5131 10 лет назад

      Car & Driver, Mazda 3s 2.3L. 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. There is no stock 2000 anything Corolla doing 0-60 in 5.0 seconds. And the same magazine couldn't get any recent XRS to get past high 7's to low 8's. Dream on. Cite your stock 2005 XRS doing 0-60 in five flat. I'll be waiting, and whistling.

      *****
      There was a Matrix that had a really high revving 1.8 with 170hp and this was back in like '04 I think. 5 secs to 60, no way but an interesting engine. Too bad Toyota never went anywhere with it probably because of Scion not that Scion had anything really exciting until recently with the FR-S.
      I think Corollas need not be judged for acceleration but handling and steering which was plain jane and rightfully so. The Corolla is a commuter car.

    • @TonyyStarrkk1994
      @TonyyStarrkk1994 9 лет назад +1

      Kica mode Corollas are shit lmao. Its all i can afford being in college. Id love a FRS, maybe in a few years.
      Edit: I mean they're shit for speed and acceleration, as a commuter car i don't think many cars can beat them lol. Except the BMW i8. 2.5 litres/ 100km

    • @jamesbarrett5131
      @jamesbarrett5131 9 лет назад +1

      Yes, a great commuter car, and a great first car too. The older XRS Corolla/Matrix did have a good motor, and the '05 era that had them were quick, for their time (mid/low 7 second to 60 time). I'm not sure about that web site. I would recommend something like Road & Track, Motor Trend, Car & Driver, etc. I mourned the death of the Celica (which I swear looks just like the Scion tC suspension from the rear. Perhaps the Celica became the tC). The FRS/BRZ project should have let Toyota have their version and bring back the Celica name.

THAT MAZDA WITH A 2.5 MOTOR IS WHAT A COROLLA S WOULD BE LIKE IF IT HAD A CAMRY MOTOR UNDER THE HOOD. GREAT VIDEOS YOUNG MAN THANK YOU

    I actually purchased a Toyota Corolla S last week, and it looks and sounds nothing like this in one in the video. The one that I have has amazing handling, and isn't that boring to drive. And it has a nice touch screen display inside the car, which I can see is missing in this Corolla in the video.

    I just traded my 2011 Corolla S with 24k miles for a 2012 Mazda5. The Mazda5 is based on the 3, has same engine and as far as I know the same transmission. I was going for a 3 but have 2nd child on the way, and I couldn't resist the sliding doors, so a 5 it was. I am glad to have gotten rid of the Canadian POS, the Corolla I had was made in Canada, I should have known after 2 disappointing Chryslers I purchased years ago. Transmission trouble, steering trouble, right from factory.

    I'm lucky to say that it saved me from a head on collision from an incoming car. Walked away with just a seatbelt burn. Having now that I have to buy a new car...I'd probably buy the new corolla 2014 sports hatch model. The mazda 3 IS safe, however too nosy for my liking. I found that the acceleration in the mazda 3 is very loud, but interior features...the speakers were far by the greatest.

    yea but the reason he picked it is because of price range. Your trying to get two different cars but in the same price range. If Mazda offers it at the same price it would be wrong to put the base when you can get the middle trim as the same price as the base Toyota corolla.

    I drive a 2012 Mazda 3 I touring hatch. The interior of mine is about the same as the 2.5, and I have to disagree with your gripes about the interior. If you take a look at the corolla, and ill even add the Ford focus SE/ST, those are some complicated layouts. More clutter than convenience. But with the mazda 3 when it comes to interior, I believe you can count on it having everything you need, and that's it. Everything is right there in an easy-to-know layout. I know I am biased because I am all about the drive when it comes to owning a car, and mazda is definitely a car that is all about the drive with less bullshit.

    I have a mazda3 2.0. I couldnt even get a Corolla in a manual in my area. Dealer said they didnt want to mess with it. I still looked at the corolla and heres my opinion: Toyota rides smoother, gets better mpgs, and will probably be a little more reliable. Interiors are comparable. The Mazda isnt "fast" but its zippy compared to the Toyota. and I have the 2.0, the 2.5 has an extra 20ish hp and low end torque. The steering feel is better and the ride is sportier. Mazda clearly wins.

    Test drive one. It has enough get up and go if you need it even though it's not as fast, but the ride is far nicer. If you want the speed, Mazda, if you want the ride, Toyota. Just depends on your taste. I felt this was a fair review. I bought a Corolla 2013 S because I think they are excellent reliable cars, and I love the styling a lot better than the Mazda. The 3 is a nice car though....and is faster. I don't care though. Toyota till I die.

    I don't think that's a fair comparison. While I agree with you that the Mazda is a better car as far as performance, you should have compared the Corolla with the base engine Mazda 3 - that is more of a fair comparison.

    • @lucasborent2366

      +Patrick Sorrells But the Corolla "S" isn't a base model Corolla, it's $2,500 more than the base model and as we just discovered is basically just 17" inch rims, foglights, sideskirts and a spoiler, where as with the mazda you actually get Sport performance. He was comparing equal MSRP's of each car.

    • @PS-sb8kk

      I agree, I think all the equipment they throw on the Corolla, is just window dressing, it doesn't really make the Corolla a sporty car. I just am not really a fan of the Corolla, much better cars out there, and besides Toyota sells a 4 speed automatic Corolla as the base version. And people are stupid enough to buy this version of the Corolla because they want a toyota so much, that they will buy this inferior vehicle.

    Toyota is simply the best, and it's sales figures reflect that.

      Piinkham Corolla's are not for speed. Mazda 3's have power but does it get good gas milage. I think not.

      +uhavemooface Are you kidding me? Corollas get less mpg than they advertise. I have a Corolla and I am planning to trade it in. The type S is a joke and there is nothing sporty about it. It has the same crappy 1.8 liter motor that revs up to slow. It's difficult for me to merge into traffic because of it's slow acceleration and I can easily get rear ended by cars behind me. My grandma had a Corolla and she says it's to slow for her. Slow doesn't equal good gas mileage anymore because we are not in the 80s. Engines have better technological advancements. V6's get better gas mileage than Corolla. Low revs equal better gas mileage. I literally have to rev the engine up to the moon to get passed the intersection due to the 1.8 liters lack of torque. 1.8 liters are not powerful enough to propel the much heavier current model Corolla as it did back in the small lighter weight models from the 90s. Toyota should've placed the 2.4 liter from the old Scion TC and older model Camry's since they wanted to be cheap. It would have been much better.

      I get great gas milage with my 2015 Corolla Le so I don't know what Corolla your talking about. But good for you that your turning it in. I like the corolla. Its great on the high way to me and my fiance we love it. We just went to Reno Nevada and it only took less then one tank on a three hour drive. So six hours all together. I don't know what year your talking about but my 2015 le is awsome so far so good.

    It's a no brainer... unless the Corolla's sale price drops to around $11,500 brand new, it's not even worth looking at it. I got a Mazda5 with more features and it's more car for the same money, LoL. My only mistake was not looking into Mazda a year earlier, for that I kick myself in the ass. In fact this dude shouldn't even be comparing a 1.8L vs. a 2.5L, even the A/T, a 1990's style 4 speed holdover vs. a modern, sport 5 speed shifter w/"manumatic" shifting standard. HELLOOO!?!?

    2.5 vs 1.8 really???

  • @MrJustme0430
    @MrJustme0430 10 лет назад +1

    First of all you're comparing a 1.8 vs a 2.5, so the Mazda is supposed to have more power. Second, the corolla is no a race car, when you buy a corolla you know you are buying a car which is going to give you safety, a car that the only thing you need to do is change the oil and get it full with gas. Common dude, the corolla is better, in fuel economy, safety, maybe not power, but whenever you want to sale it, you know somebody is going to give you what it really cost.

      eapa811 what the hell are you talking about? he was right on the money, a corolla is for a comfy ass ride, reliability, and mpg. corolla buyers dont give a shit about performance. you get speeding tickets trying to use a fun car ANYWAY.

    well I own a 2010 Mazda 3 Sport GT 2.5 and yes its very fun to drive but if you look at gas consumption the mazda 3 is not the car for you , for comfort the mazda 3 lacks big time vs the Corolla and fuel consumption , right now my mazda 3 is in the body shop getting some thing fixed and I got the same year Corolla as my 3 and the corolla is the base model and I will tell you this its a much smother ride and boy the corolla saves my money on gas I will tell you that , I think in the next 2 to 3

    2014 corolla s premium vs 2014 Mazda I touring similar prices, please compare

  • @ProudfootHobbit
    @ProudfootHobbit 11 лет назад

    Which makes you wonder, what if Toyota put somewhat of a performance engine under the Corolla's hood, let's say the Corolla S got a nice power boost to bring it up to around 200hp (more or less) and dropped in a 5 sp sport auto?? Just that alone would be a huge difference all else being equal though the brakes need MAJOR updating, I speak from experience as I remember my old 2011 corolla S brakes sucked goat balls.

    I'm not trying discourage you but the review is misleading... It would have been great if you included the model year of the car's you were comparing. The 10th generation Corolla S (which you are testing) weighs about 3000 pounds due to several added luxury items and safety features. The generation before that, the 9th generation (which I race) is a much lighter, sportier car, but I guess honestly it does lack the looks of the 10th generation. If you lived in CA i'd be willing to show you :D
