Joshua: “As this year’s wonderful Pride Month comes to a wrap, it is not only a time of celebration but also an opportunity for us to reflect upon what we are doing to ensure inclusivity. Three years ago, we took a small but significant step by including non-binary pronouns in our forms, changing our communication from binary to inclusive. This change has created a space for customers and employees where they feel they can truly express their identity. It is important that we celebrate and acknowledge the diversity in our community, including our queer friends and allies.
    Happy Pride Month!
    Over to Deaf Rainbow NSW.”
Catherine: “As Pride Month concludes, it's important to keep in mind how we and the Deaf community can improve inclusivity for our queer members. How can we do this? It’s really simple. Never assume a person's identity, gender, or sexuality based on their appearance or who they are with.
It is important to recognise that queer people don't come out just once. They may be burdened with “coming out” every day to their families, friends, and in their workplace. For example, in conversations at work, I may asked about my boyfriend or husband. These questions make me uncomfortable because I may identify as bisexual. I feel ignored and unsafe when people assume I am straight, and may feel pressured to share my identity and start overthinking what might happen if I come out to them.
Remember, we have a language in our Deaf community that is inherently inclusive. Instead of making assumptions, we can ask general questions like "How's your partner?" or "Do you have a partner?" Using the word "partner" fosters a sense of inclusion and respect, leading to meaningful conversations. It is a truly lovely experience regardless of who we are with, regardless of gender or identity.
Happy Pride Month! We hope you keep these thoughts in mind as we work together to support queer inclusivity in our Deaf community.”]
