With Yamaha's Virtual Circuit Modeling, the YC61 conquers the market as one of the most lifelike sounding analog emulation keyboards. Packed with 2 iconic rotary speaker types, premium acoustic & FM electric piano engines & powered by the same technology that made the DX7. This stage piano is like no other, designed around performance & carrying an incredible waterfall-style keyboard & physical drawbars, make this a ton of fun to manipulate & play! Don't be fooled though, the YC61 may take the characteristics of a vintage instrument but has more than enough features to make it into any top tear stage, studio or setting!

Just bought today!! Absolutely love it!!
Hey! Can we get Jack to do a short video on the new 1.2 update with improved “studio” rotary and 3 additional FM organs?!
Can you do a video comparing a Hammond SKX Pro vs Yamaha Yc61 ?
Check out a real hammond in the shop b4 buying….
I bought a Yamaha YC88 a month ago and the setup is almost the same. It has weighted wooden 88 keys instead of waterfall and of course is more for a pianist than an organist but I've learnt more from your demonstration than from any of the demos showing the 88 so far. It has exactly the same organ setup as the 61. Thanks for the detail. I'll be watching this video again.
YC61 is really a great keyboard that addresses the need for a keyboard that focuses almost 100% on the actual playing of music and creating those USABLE sounds that have dominated music for the last 50 years. Doesnt have all the bloated stuff like the big Korg or Roland workstations. This is for folks who want to focus on the sound coming out of the instrument and believe 98% of good music comes from pianos, electric organs, and synths. The easy to use interface makes that possible. I do wish they have a 76 and 88 version however to really dive low in the register for some of those great acoustic piano and over-driven organ sounds. You dont need a 1,000 page manual for this keyboard. Just start messing around and in a couple days you'll probably know how to use it like the back of your hand.
Hey it’s 4 years later. You like this keyboard ? Does it compare to the Nord 6d? I’m not sure what to get
Another fantastic video, Jack! I love that you demo the sounds, styles and features that I would actually use. Also, I’m always pleased when I see folks with ADHD find their niche. You and your charismatic energy were born for RUclips gear demonstrations; And probably born for music performance in general. I can tell you’ve got mad skills. 🎹
Sweet sounding unit! Power packed with features, I love it. I've had the MX 88 for about 20 months and it's incredible, this is like a organ piano keyboard hybrid mixing a CP and a motif !!
A fantastic sounding keyboard, but frankly, this guy could sell sand to Arabs with such playing skills. He could make a vintage Casiotone CT model sound amazing!
😂
Jack’s the best reviewer out there. Thanks man.
Yes! LED’s & Drawbars, together. About time. How’s it stack up against a NE6D?
I hope they release larger versions of their entire Reface series. Especially the DX and CS in this form factor!
I'd prefer a real size CP, Rhodes and Wurli are my favorite instrument sounds ever.
@@couchcamperTM I think the CP88 or CP73 are the closest you're going to get, and I'd imagine the CS is the next one they do, given they've asked about interest, and it would only make sense to complete the "full size" reface series.
@@captainjackkeys2975 with the CP 88 we are in full scale (and full price) stage piano territory, and I would (honestly) prefer a Korg VS1 or 2 in that case. but it would require a lottery win anyways xD
@@couchcamperTM Haha I totally get that, I'd be in the same boat myself! Somewhat unfortunately, I think that's Yamahas plan: bump the reface models up to top-of-the-line size and price. Time will tell if they ever attempt mid-range models that aren't just a regular workstation.
@@couchcamperTM That is exactly what the CP73 and CP88 are all about :-) Both are the more EP/Acoustic leaning versions of the YC61. The CP73 has a fantastic weighted keybed, and the CP88 has a top of the line graded hammer action keybed from the more "traditional" clavinovas
I have the YC-73 with Leslie sim update...absolutely brilliant. One thing I cannot fathom in such a good keyboard is the lack of envelope control...one knob for attack and release? Yamaha what were you thinking? Hope some more envelope control will be available in an update even with menu diving would be better than nothing
Great demo brother, thanks - love how deep you went!
As soon as you hit the first notes, "Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies" popped straight into my head. What a sound!
I'm a synth guy, more of a sound designer than a real player. Have never even considered a stage piano before, but this... This seems nice. Sounds really good and I'm a sucker for lots of physical controls.
Hmmm.
If you want to keep the sound design, check out Nord Stage 3. (Though you probably already know about it)
Thank you for another great (and entertaining) video - Jack! My YC61 will arrive mid August..cannot wait…
Wow, I'm heading out to pick one up to get this party started!. Chicago thanks Jack!!
Please do a sound comparison of YC61, Roland VR09, Nord Stage/Electro, and Hammond SK1/2
plugging all into a Leslie 3300. As owner of B3/Leslie 122 setup, I know that plugging
even a real B3 into a keyboard amp instead of Leslie results in sound more
like a Vox organ than B3 as we're used to. Demo with Leslie
will boost the clones' authenticity, B3/Leslie rich fatness by 1000 percent.
Onboard Leslie sims don't cut it compared to Leslie 3300 into good recording microphone.
Viscount and SK1 or 2 aren't bad for sims, but still don't get the true Leslie overall sound.
These You Tube B3 clone demos all sound thin, canned, especially top octave. It's
mostly a problem of keyboard amp or directly routing clone with onboard rotary sims into a recording console.
Great funky playing man!
I have an authentic, fully-functional 1972 Yamaha YC-45D and this “YC” misses a lot of the original’s features and effects...and that was technology from almost 50 years ago! What happened to the multiple Marimba and Vibrato effects...features that made the YC line so unique?
The YC61 is essentially a scaled-down CP-73, but with a tonewheel organ emphasis and 61 waterfall keys.
Vanessa JazP I'm trying to decide between the YC61 and CP 73. I want organ sounds and draw bars but I also want 73 keys :/
@@officialWWM It may be worth waiting to see if Yamaha comes out with a 73-key version, the way Roland did with their VR series. Roland first came out with the VR09, which is 61 keys, and then about 3 or 4 years later they came out with the improved VR730.
I have the VR730, and it has a great organ sound. It's an affordable alternative to the YC61 (about $400 cheaper), and it has a MUCH better rotary speaker sim than the YC61, although the effects and product support for the VR730 leave a LOT to be desired.
I'm not sure what Yamaha was thinking when they designed their rotary speaker sim, but it is about the worst I've ever heard. Hopefully they will provide an update that improves it. Otherwise, the effects on the YC61 are very good and stage-friendly.
For piano and synth and other sounds, the YC 61 is excellent. Industry best in my opinion. Many of the same sounds you've heard in their best boards. It's not a "synth", so there are no deep-dive menus for sound-tweaking. You great sounds, and a simple, direct, hands-on process for modifying them to taste.
I think at this point, though, the overall best option for stage organ would be the Nord electro, 73-key version if you want the most you can get, and have the money to spare. If Yamaha improves the rotary speaker sim and comes out with a 73-key version of the YC61, THAT would be the board to have!
@Tom Jones You mean the Roland VR-09?
@Tom Jones Stay away from the 09 completely. If you get the Roland, get the 730. It has waterfall keys (and of course 73 of them). The 09 has synth action keys that not a lot of users like.
As far as I’m concerned, there are only 2 things about the Roland that beats out the YC61: 73 keys, and a great rotary sim. Otherwise, the Yamaha wins in everything else, IMO.
The Roland VR series has some great sounds, but they’re on par with the Yamaha. Some better, some not as good.
The Yamaha is more stage friendly and has way better effects. Plus, with the Yamaha, you get 6 different organ engines, whereas with the Roland you only get 3.
But the Roland’s synth sounds are a little better, in my opinion.
I would run to the store and buy YC61, but... there's just one thing that holds me back. My old trusty Hammond SK1 has a 2 manual + pedal mode, which is important for me as an organ player. Yamaha does not. I can connect an extra keyboard and a foot keyboard to SK1 and have a full Hammond experience. Why hasn't Yamaha thought of this? YC61 is lighter, has more sounds (especially credible Yamaha pianos), and more live sets, so it could be an instant replacement for my SK1, but it won't be just for this reason.
I think this sounds amazing. And I intend to watch all of this demonstration...
cool to hear Jack plug my fave volume pedal, the FC7. I've got 3 of those. still going strong after 25 years of abuse 😉
I had one since 1994 and just a few weeks ago it died on me for no reason I can figure out. It was like losing a pet! I’m still distraught. It’s literally sitting a few feet away from me against a wall, as if somehow it will start working again. I’ve done so many shows with that pedal. Luckily, my band’s guitar player had one he picked up and never used, so he gave it to me. Made my day!
Please do some Hammond tips and tricks vids!
Ace review bud! Always great 👍
Love this so much. Such great sounds
Great presentation, very informative. Anyway, it will be good if you presented Hammonds without any drive in amp/Leslie section, with cleaner Leslie. But this board can really be Electro killer. Much more versatile, maybe with slightly worse soundset, definitely different. But hey, Electro doesn't have pitch bend, modulation, filter, multilayer other sounds....
Didnt look at the whole vid, but i never heard the really clean organ sound, always some overdrive
Agree!
Always enjoy your posts! Isn't the DRIVE on the Right side - in the AMP section still ON? You bring up a good point about them always demo'ing this instrument with the crunch engaged, maybe not on the Left, but the other Drive (on the Right.) I wish it would sound like my Reface YC!!!! (maybe it does, but I'll have to listen to your sounds-only video to find out. So far I've been underwhelmed whenever I try one. Hopefully Studiologic's firmware update on the pretty cool and much cheaper Numa Compact 2x will make this heavier, pricier shorter, no-aftertouch instrument even less intriguing. The sk-1 here and the VR-09 also please. I always miss a Yamaha piano though. And though the 1st Rhodes on the Numa is GREAT, yammy Rhodes are always yummy. Take care, rock on, solidarity among key players, ta!
Moving on from what kind of box it's shipped in lol. I think the Leslie fx are v poor, Yamaha have never come close to to getting this right. The Nord blows it away, also too much leakage by default. I'm sure you can tweak this to your liking but the organ sound on quality phones for me is very thin. The Viscount clonewheel does it all very well. Keep the videos coming though love listening to them. Great work.
How about the footpedal volme? It's essential for organ playing, verybody seems to forget about that
Whole big brother series for all the reface units incoming? Like CS61, DX61 etc?
That would be dope!! X
Thanks for the review. Slick as always. I have a question about the narrower than normal keys. This has been brought up in various comments. How much was that an issue for you? Or could be for anyone in your opinion? Thanks again.
Compared with a real hammond organ the keys do not feel alike. I was a owner of a YC61 and returned it after 3 months. Now i have hammond skx pro….a difference like day and night….on the YC glissandos are much more difficult….you need to press much more the keys…..the hammond keys feel lightweight and very precise….you can adjust them to your individual purpose
thanks for this me old m8, been looking forward to you getting one, great demo as always. hey, hate to be that guy but switch off the leslie completely for authentic auger sound!. still waiting to hear this organ without overdrive, even though you switched off the pre-drive it was still a distorted sound... :/ does this thing do a clean mellow b3?
Hopefully once Andertons have finished with it, you can have a go!... obviously he can't demo every single sound but I would have liked to hear the Wurlitzer ep.
Woody Piano Shack Howdy Woody!
Alright there my Luvverrr!! Good shout about Auger, I'm not brave enough to turn off completely so stop is as "Auger" as I get!! Good point on the drive, like a right lemon I turned off the pre drive but missed the drive knob in the Leslie section. In the room it sounded pretty clean but listen back it's still dirtier than kebab from Weymouth Seafront!! I reckon dialing that back will get you to a cleaner, purer sound, no problem. I was really impressed with it tbh. Anyways, thanks for stopping my mate, all my love and best wishes to ya Xx
A Woody/Jack collaboration would make 2020 slightly more bearable :)
It can't produce the classic Yamaha Electone YC sound. Not sure why they left out that sound set. Especially when it is in the Reface YC.
@chief tp LMAO!! Funniest comment I’ve read in a while
Very creative presentation!
I am interested on all the video you make, they wonderful and Jack is super funny I love his English humor :-). Now, my question, hope to get an answer, but what would be here in this demo video the setup, in other words, where the sound is coming from, is a Keyboard Amp? Or a set of Monitors? My question is because, I am enjoying mainly playing home, recording and playing mostly classic rocks, a wide range of songs from deep purple to Led Zeppelin, to the Doors etc... so multiple sound are involved, Hammond, Farfisa, Vox, and piano. . But what would be the best home setup where I should connect the YC, to a guitar Amp perhaps that would do? Or a pair of monitors? Do you have any demo talking about this? I see many people making reviews getting brilliant sound but they never talk about (where the keyboard is connected to?) Cheers
Hi Steve. True - there was an update and the Leslie simulation is quite fair. However the sound is really weak - especially because of missing bass frequencies and the missing of a realistic key click since the virtual multi contact is missing. This is one of the most overseen but important feature when it comes to clone the original Hammond. This is not a clone but a clown (wheel) organ. My mum always said: we don’t have money for cheap things. If someone prefers a lightweigt cheap keyboard with thin sound engine the YC61 might be the perfect choice. If you want full sound - spend double the price - have double weight but thousand times more fun and full siund experience - it‘s worth every penny.cheers.
Yes: a decente Hammond sound
I was so excited for this keyboard because I love my Yamaha reface CP and all the effects I can put on it however I am a huge Hammond organ fan, and to my ears thatkeyboard does not have an accurate sounding Hammond in it at all. However I love for someone to tell me otherwise. I love every other aspect of this keyboard besides the Hammond
Only way to be certain is to demo one in the store when they come out.
Great review, Jack! Your demo skills have improved so much. You are Excellent! :)
Be nice if they packaged this into an electone. Imagine if Yamaha sold an organ. (in the UK).
Jack is such a good player!
it sounds marvellous.
Can I get a sound like the one in the Deep Purple song called Highway star in this keyboard? Thanks in advance.
Organs pretty good, I liked the 78’ Rhodes but the rest of them were not very good.
[Been waiting since NAMM for a thorough demo like this. Thanks!
Now I have to wait until they get the darn things in the stores]
*UPDATE 5/31/20
Got one of these a couple of weeks ago! Sounds are fantastic and the controls are well thought-out. As good a Hammond organ sound as there is, and the addition of the FM organs is a unique treat.
The rotary emulation is where Yamaha stumbled, unfortunately. The stereo spread is very narrow, and there’s no way to spread that out. I have a MODX, and the rotary emulation on that is top notch. You can spread the stereo field from 0-degrees (effectively Mono), to a lush 180-degrees. The YC61 does not do that. It has an option to choose either Stereo or Mono, but the stereo option has a very narrow spread, somewhere in the 45-degree range.
Wait for what...
Maybe they can fix that in a future update?
I really want a 73 key waterfall version of this 😩
Me too - I bought YC61 because I feared howw the semi-weightet keys on the YC73 would be.
The reface yc has a much better organ sound, which sucks because this board could have been way better and really dope. The reface yc actually has a more realistic Hammond and Leslie rotary sound
Those rhoads sounds are awful too
That right there is the widdly-widdly!
Thanks a million for the review, and Jack for your statement concerning the Nords. There seems to be an unfounded snobbery when it comes to the red keyboards - and for a long time there was no "real" alternative in terms of the usability aspect. But Roland have their VR 730 with a similar usability concept, Sutdiologic has their Numa Compact, and I think Yamaha have knocked it out of the park here. I had the choice between the Nord 6D 73 and the Yamaha CP73. I chose the Yamaha. The pianos are stellar, the EPs lovely, the lead sounds great. And yes, the wiggle-stick tipped the scale for me. I wanted the red one... and it's like 3,5 kilos lighter. But the Keybed on the CP73 is miles ahead of the Nord's.
You can also do other registrations like de german version of klaus wunderlich the world is more open than people think The most people plays jazz and rock... there is many more and check even Cor Steyn on youtube... You wil be amazing ... 😊 thanks for the demo I always love it too see this channel... 👍
So this has a real FM engine, like the MODX? That's cool. Is it the same FMX engine as in the MODX/Montae?
Other questions: Is it velocity/aftertouch sensitive? What is the polyphony? Is it different for samples and FM?
In terms of price vs capability, how would you compare it to the very capable MODX6?
Thanks!
I have a MODX6 and it's awesome but I also have a Korg Kronos and it's the best thing I've ever owned. Just picked up the Korg Wavestate, much like the MODX. I also have a Nord 5D, the Kronos and Nord are my main keys
but i so much want this board
i really loved this video ! finally a deep and pratical analisis of this keyboard, not only for selling it but for giving us the idea of what you really can do in dept .. beatiful !
may i ask you if you find out if this keyboard has midi capability to split a sound like ''sound A'' on an esternal master and ''sound B'' on the YC keybed or something like that ?
Great Video! What monitors do you use?
Does the two green lights above the rotary speed switch imitate a visual representation of the physical rotary spinning?????! If so 🤯 Someone please confirm if so or not.
How's the key width? I know that Yamaha uses the thinner width keys for their 61 key boards like the MX61 (vs the regular size keys on the MX88 for example), but is it the same for the YC61?
Hi John, good question, it really semmed very similar to the Nord...to waterfall keybeds loke this feel wider and stubbier than a standard workstation synth keybed. Hope that helps, thanks for stopping by X
I have a Yamaha Genos, which I find incredible and very useful since I do a lot of composing and arranging. The Yamaha YC-61 caught my eye due to its organ engine but are the other sound samples the same as the Genos?
Nice.. are there pipe organ sounds on this keyboard?
Sounds good... BUT! Can it beat The Dark Horse?
We want to see YC 76 versus hammond sk1 76 comparison!
All comparisons are with nord. But Hammond is more important, as they are king of The sound.
The price though. Nord have such an image and representation with 95% of pro players you see on TV and live. It's would really hurt to be shelling out £400 quid more for this than what a Nord electro 6d is. Guess it comes down to what features, sounds and feel you value most.
Its nice but pricy.. ill pick a nord over this.. the nords value doesnt come low easily..
Guess it depends on the market. in the US a Nord electro 6d is $2199 USD while This is only $1999
Does the carpet match the drapes?
Compare to Vox Continental?
I wish they made a 73 key version of this :/ Or a CP73 with waterfall keys...
Thought it would be cheaper than Nord electro, to enter the game as a serious competitor. Still, I can't find any better feature, and it's even more expensive... I'm sticking with a Nord Electro6d...
But its got a 4 zone MIDI controller and audio interface, its got a (sort of) synth with portamento and a filter, its got proper audio ins, its got better sounding wurlitzers (which is important to me) and its got a pitch stick. BTW I'm a nord electro6D owner too! Nord has the sample synth library (meh) and the option to designate L/R outputs to different sounds, but I don't see any other advantage the electro has over the YC61. I suppose Nord has the 'vibe' effect too, which makes everything sound nice and vintage...ish. But I'm curious to hear how Yamahas VCM stuff compares. Oh, The Yc61 also has more comprehensive effects control (rate and amount) as apose to electro's universal control for each effect - which iv found to be a bit limiting, but not worth the upgrade to a stage 3
You can’t get this with the cp Keybed? Almost like how Nord does it?
Nord did the lights with drawbars first not Yamaha on the Nord stage 4.
Do I spy a little Abandoned Luncheonette on the table there?😄
Can't wait for this to be released...
Nice and that's some swell looking packaging though I have to wonder if old sloppy fingers here, may just hit a switch or button while ripping out on organ and whatnot as some seem very close to the keys.
How can you get a clean Hammond. No overdrive, but, still using the Rotary speaker.
One thing is not clear: can you set up a split with organ engine on one side and keys engine on the other? Could only find references to splits within the sections.
Hey Nubula, just had a read to check but yes, it's a shame it's not all encompassed by the LR methodology in the Keys section but esentially you use the LU (Lower Upper) buttons and split points to combine and split as you wish. Hope that helps, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Jack X
@@jackduxbury1632 Thanks, I now realize it's possible. Wasn't clear at first but if I understand correctly, by turning on both needed sections and having just L and just R playing on each one you can do it. The part of the manual that talks about the menu screen that gives you a quick view of your settings for a particular scene/preset seems to indicate this is possible
Does it have a melodica sound patch on it?
Looks great, a pitty it has only five octaves
I’ve read that you can’t assign the Master EQ to a live set. Yet the CP88 has a firmware update to allow that feature. This a great way to have an equalizer to set to either organ, piano, or synth. Unless there is a workaround??
In my opinion, my reface YC sounds just as good for Hammond sounds
Mitchell Glick My Reface YC with Electro Harmonix Lester K sounds better !
@@DrDAAD yeah right
Hum... To me the YC61, the hammond sk1, the Nord, the Korg Vox, sound all good for hammond. But the reface YC and its leslie simulator sound just a little "better" than an old Yamaha PSR.
JRussoC I own a reface YC and together with an external leslie pedal is great! I agree with Nord (and here we have “all in one” concept just like YC61: elecro or stage doesn’t matter! Great!) and Hammond. Sk1, ok but SK5 is probably the best after the old B3. For me the YC61 (from the youtube videos!) does not happening! Sorry. Today I was just listening to the iPad IK Multimedia organ App and I was blown away!!! After only one minute! (Check it out if you didn’t!) I watched basically all YC 61 youtube videos and I felt almost...nothing! But yes, the thing is, I like the Nord “all in one” idea for live performances! Unfortunately (and I am an Yamaha guy : P85, MODX 8 and 6, Reface DX and YC, MX49, an old S03 etc... ) as much as I wanted to like the YC61 ....I don’t. I would still buy a Nord Electro! Or stage, but ok, the price is higher ... I am not happy to say that!
@@DrDAAD yes, I'm sure that with a external Leslie it gets a lot better, in principle, making a acceptable hammond sound isn't hard, the leslie part is. And as you said, it's hard that this model gets a good cut of the organ market. I really don't understand the reasoning of korg and Yamaha with the price of their organs
Is the Leslie editable?
EDITED COMMENT: Yup, see page 18 of the manual here. usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/1311174/yc61_en_om_a0.pdf
One good pipe organ sound?
I'll take a 76 key version please.
I've heard this keyboard mostly focuses on organ sounds. Is that right? If yes, than isn't it better to get the brand new Korg SV 2 ?
Perfect for second keyboard if you're gigging.
Lawrence Gillespie that's a very expensive second keyboard...
@@officialWWM Oh, you're right. I hope for that price, they've over-engineered the drawbars, switches, knobs and keys to last a lifetime.
Lawrence Gillespie yes, the quality would want to be pretty high!
As is a Roland VR 09B with a great B3 & Leslie emulation, a good 'second keyboard' & a lot cheaper than this. If you're not convinced, use the savings to buy a Lester K or Vent. (which will also transform most other makes of Keyboard as well!!)
@@graghamstaylor2341 Agreed - Roland VR-09 is FAR more value for money than this !
3:14 Back in Jack's Nordy...or naughty days? Heheh
Both 🤓 XXX
Better than Nord?
30:59 Nice phrase
C7 is really amazing, but Nord has more variety and the pianos sound more woody and warm
I’m looking at an organ emulator for gigs I’m absolutely craving a comparison (preferably through a Lesley) please make it happen Jack 🤣😇😇
And a partridge in a pear tree !
Perfect n already hav started saving fr it....🤗🔥
looks like the "FM" is emulating the extended drawbars on VOX... but no drawbar to adjust the square wave level? or the traditional 4 drawbars?
Can you attach a music stand? If so how please
The leslie effect sounds really weird to me. Still better than Kronos but not nearly as good as Nord!
Yamaha hasn't made a good organ similar yet
FM-X has 8 operators, but 9 drawbars for the FM organ... so how does it work?
9=total volume?
Aftertouch?
Tone leakage: band name dibs
Did you stop bleeping out the Falcon's real name now, or was that a mistake?
kwaping haha yeah I noticed this too mate, all the old videos call him his real name and I used to feel clever knowing what he was really called 🤣
I thought love was only true in fairytales...
Aliasing warning @33:37
Yeah, but can a bbblind person use it? I guess to use a great 88 key keyboard with a sequencer, it’d need to talk. Sucks to be me, unless you know of ones that do.
Can it djent?
Actually, yes.
versatile, but sounds too harsh in the highs, very digital.
i stick to my GSI Gemini
Okay boomer.
