From what I heard and saw in this video, it's not that Ingrid simply _beat_ Bison. It's that she made a complete and utter joke out of him, made Psycho Power (you know, the thing that defines Bison as a threat) out to have been something he _stole_ rather than it being given to or earned by him, and then just kinda left to make a joke out of good ol' MC Ryu too. And probably did off-screen, simply because she's Ingrid and she's awesome.

Not gonna lie, I thought I was gonna see a discussion about their in game skillset abuse, and such... and I'm lowkey disappointed by the entirety of the video. Especially with the conclusion being a not-so thought provoking question.
There's no doubt that most people thag like fighting games, like them because they're not anime tropey "cutesy" "UwU" vibe games. So inviting those characters into the roster will gain natural detest. That's just obvious. Asking why is..weird..to me.
But the fact he overlooked their actual performance in the game, and how that adds to the feedback is a total letdown. I cant speak for Ingrid, or Lucky Chloe, but I can say... I've seen more stigma against Marie Rose and Honoka players rather than the characters... and only complaints of the characters by proxy.
Marie Rose is inconsistent in personality, not lacking in it. Honoka has no defined personality beyond being innocent and oblivious, ie childlike. So to see her use these OP "cool" moves and in spamming methods is off putting. It goes against her brand as childish and suddenly she's a pro powerhouse, specifically one that's annoying to fight. That creates a big disdain for the playerbase.
Marie Rose also has a generally aggravating moveset that also can be used to trigger the player-- and ruin their setups etc in an instant.. and she has one of the worst(best?) infinite loops in the game. You take that into account with a dry personality-- and inconsistent storyline and she's naturally gonna be disliked by seasoned players as well.
Not to mention the general dislike that tbe characters are "child like" and sexualized to a point that it's SLIGHTLY uncomfortable. There's just not a lot of room for them to be liked.
(Which was also overlooked in this video.)
I can see why people dislike Marie Rose, I can see people being annoyed by honoka personality wise...but sheeeeeesh. FIGHTING THEM?😂 It's a rage cesspool waiting to be built...and likely the true base of most detestment. Which is something I've heard about Chloe too.

Never heard the term Cute Aggression, but I think I'm definitely gonna remember it.
Plenty in the FGC like or are at least neutral to cute things sure, but there's definitely some sort of intense backlash like hate at this particular flavor of cute. It usually seems to be the...I guess audacity of a character like that appearing in anything outside of somewhere where its expected to stay like Blazblue or Melty Blood. I can at least understand that, not finding it fitting the tone of a game, but some of the rage seems to get really...dramatic. Before people even knew what Cloe's moveset was, I remember some people absolutely lost their shit at the character even existing. And in Ingrid's case its especially weird since like the video said, she didn't even come from a completed game to even ruin. Maybe it's a bit of a Scrappy effect? Like people thought the character was being pushed too much?
None of these characters are really my cup of tea either but I don't entirely get what warrants the level of rage I see sometimes.

One thing to point out about Ingrid in Alpha 3 Max is that her arcade story contains a bit of mistranslation; The actual story goes is that Bison (somehow) stole Ingrid's seal (the two gold hair caps she wears on her head) and used it to power his psycho drive, and Ingrid goes to get it back.

The reason people aren't upset with Law and Paul is because they started with serious lore beats and when people were debating who unknown was and if Heihachi was dead the first time, Tekken was fun storywise.
I think the best thing about Tekken is that you have all these separate story arcs going on simultaneously.
You have Eddie's story about his father, you have Hworang's story about fighting with Jin, you have the big overarcing Mishima story, and my favorite, the King story.
I'll bring up Yakuza because it's the one series I feel does the goofy and serious tones of Tekken right: 1) Make serious characters 2) Make a serious story 3) Make non-serious stories 4) Make joke characters.
I love for them to actually give Lucky Chloe a story and personality outside of just being annoying. I think main characters have to have a serious air to latch onto.

Personally I can't stand Ingrid due to her being written like a terrible fanfic and with how the writing and presentation can't stop sucking her off. Like even if you take A.B.I.s statement on Alpha you also need to consider that Ingrid was also presented as casually shitting on Pyron.
The constant boasting of just "oh she's so powerful even if Ingrid gets double perfected she's just holding back" is super annoying. Mind you that this is a treatment nobody else in the entire franchise, no matter how strong, ever gets. Akuma for instance is rivaled or arguably surpassed by Ryu, Oro, Gen, etc. and his win quotes and presentation never indicate that he just casually slaps everyone else even if in-story he is definitively stronger than most of the cast. Akuma has to put in work instead of just "being magic."
If you put Ingrid in some fantasy anime fighting game like Arcana Heart or BlazBlue she'd be more of a natural fit but in Street Fighter she doesn't fit in at all. I'd still find her character and presentation insufferable but at least it wouldn't be entirely out of place. Even Oni felt kinda strange in the setting and that was an established character built on established lore, not some random schoolgirl who happens to use "the true Psycho Power" and is so much more powerful than everyone else that even if she loses she just "let them win."

In her story in Alpha 3 has her trying to reclaim one of her crests which Bison stole from her and is using to power the Psycho Drive. Also, when was Ingrid portrayed as holding back even when she losses? Sure Ingrid's win quotes have her messing with her opponent or being cocky, plenty of characters in Street Fighter do that.
Also, Akuma generally does get wanked to high heaven in Street Fighter. He is pretty much THE measuring stick when it comes to power. One of his most iconic moments has him slap Bison's shit even faster than Ingrid.

Marie Rose is a breath of fresh air to a franchise where most of the females are associated w/ jiggle physics, and has become one of my favorites. But since DOA has a reputation of being a titillating series, her "underaged" design tends to make certain people uncomfortable. Ingrid seems like the kind of character people label "Mary Sue" and then just turn their brains off and hate, honestly. I can't speak to how true that is, though.
I wonder if it doesn't have something to do with all these characters being feminine in a very particular "cutesy" way rather than any sort of "female warrior archetype" type of femininity, if the distinction I'm trying to make there makes sense. From the looks of it, Marie Rose and Lucky Chloe seem like the sorts of characters who don't really show much combat inclination or experience in their affectations right up until they are literally in the process of doing a combat to somebody. They don't outwardly "seem like fighters", I suppose. So, they have miens that are typically actually DISassociated with combat proficiency despite in reality being, well, skilled fighters. I think that sort of thing can create a really fun contrast, personally, but I guess a lot of people are really put off by it.

    • @gorade1901

I think I can connect those two points, a consistent issue people have with characters called Mary Sue's is being unreasonably skilled at too many things.
I've never been a big fan of the idol trope, in general and in fighting games, cause I find it weird to overhype/fetishize an industry I *only* ever hear shitty things about, but in fighting games I have another issue. I just struggle to believe you're as equally skilled in both idol performances and fighting, specifically because those are quite unrelated skills. One character that doesn't bother me this way is Bridget, who uses yoyo's both for combat and for performance art, meaning they're effectively the same skill applied differently. Otherwise, I struggle to believe you exist in this world, even within fantasy, because people who are skilled in multiple areas prioritize and develop expertize in one thing above the others.

People are more than willing to have female fighters since they often share masculine tropes for the simple fact of being fighters in the first place. Being sexy comes as a bonus. However, having cutesy fighters kinda crosses the line for the "HARDCORE" slice of the FGC since the archetype for the most part reject the typical sexy or strong tropes of a female fighter. One character I despise is Patroklos in Soul Calibur 5.
When they revealed him I wasn't that fond of his design, seemed like he was just hyper focused on looking flashy but not adding anything new to the game. But I didn't care that much to begin with, I usually don't play the sword and shield characters. However when I finally got to play the game I learned to absolutely hate him.
The story mode was completely focused on him and his sister Pyrrha, none of the other new characters got any real spotlight, Zwei and Viola definitely deserved more than what they got.
It didn't help that the story was pretty bad, but how they depicted Patroklos as a true hero and such was complete BS. He was an complete idiot at best and an awful human being at worst.
He was moaning and complaining that he lost his sister long ago and would do anything in his power to find her and spend his life with her and such. He finds her and she, for some reason, is a complete outcast and isolated from society. They are happy and joyful for maybe a day or so until he finds out she's been hanging out with a bad crowd, servants of Soul Edge like Tira because they were the only people in the world that at least pretended to giva a crap about her.
After Patroklos, our hero, found that out he, like everyone else, abandoned his long lost and beloved sister, leaving her to be swallowed up by sadness, isolation and get corrupted by Soul Edge. Patroklos, our great hero, again starts complaining that he misses his sister and then realizes that his beloved sister Pyrrha now turned into pretty much a demon that only wants to destroy everything and now he must defeat her.
As far as I can remember never once in the story do they emphasize that he is the reason why everything is messed up, he is always portrayed as the great hero that will save everyone, when he should've been the villain. Especially considering the awful things he did.
Patroklos just sucks, everything he did just made me hate him even more. Before the shit-show with his sister he just ran around and murdered countless people because some rich dude told him to and for some reason he was convinced that he was a hero or something. Naiveté only goes so far until you simply are an idiot.
If you've read this far, thanks! Now you know why me and many other Soul Calibur fans absolutely hate Patroklos.
P.S. Not gonna lie, Patroklos' and Pyrrha's theme song "Home is Faraway" is really nice, so why not give it a listen.

Yeah my best bet. People tried to copy past Jin and Noel from Blazblue into SoulCalibur. But wanted to make it reverse. Where Jin is heroic sibling while Noel is antagonistic sibling. Their story honestly feels like a bad fanfiction of blazblue fan. Plus it didn’t help that those two kinda took over roles and story that was given to their Aunt and Mom, which people wanted to see conclusions to. They probably be more accepted if they didn’t were written by better author and if they didn’t interrupt story that most fans were invested with.

Something I wanna point out here is that there's some serious sexist undertones about why people hate these characters. They are female characters who don't conform to fighting games stereotypes. The reason people don't "hate" Sakura is partly because of her inspiration from Ryu. The reason people don't hate Rose is because of her link with Bison. Women in fighting games need to be presented in a way that's not annoying and has a familiar fighting style.
I don't see nearly as much hate for somebody like SF4's Rufus, who is a geniunely annoying character who is just jaded by Kens existence, than I see for Lucky Chloe.

    • @squidtheinconsistent
      @squidtheinconsistent Год назад

The reason Sakura and Rose arent hated is because they actually have a storyline and aren't just the type of characters who were automatically perfect. And even then, Rose has some haters due to past balance issues. The entire joke with Rufus isn't that he looks out of place, its that he's always the butt of whatever joke there is, and even then, he's still very much hated. This has nothing to do with sexism, dude.

    • @etrotm1226
      @etrotm1226 Год назад

I can't say anything about the sexism (if there is any involved to begin with), but what I will say is Sakura and Rose are loved partly due to being legacy characters or having "legacy status" (there can be exceptions however), along with the fact that people in the FGC didn't have this weirdly but very noticeable case of cute aggression back then. And if they did, it wasn't nearly as bad as it is now. Literally May from Guilty back in the day was a very hated character (tho to be honest one reason was because of her dolphins and blanka ball attacks and vice versa). I seen many people go on saying "May sucks because it glorifies P word in games" or "anyone who likes her is a P word cuz SHES A CH!LD" even tho it's been implied she isn't. And now that May has "legacy status" you don't hear people hate on May as much. Since Xrd it's mainly been directed at The Valentines. Specifically Elphelt, who is also a cutesy girly character (tho this time she has tits so maybe it may not be for the same reasons. I don't know). Thing is I always noticed it's always the cute moe characters that get hated on with overwhelming intensity (along with just generally new characters. Especially if they are a new protag I noticed. Like Shun'Ei from King of Fighter 14, who i actually like with my only issue being his sweater cape).
There are many reason why people do hate on girly cutesy characters, but there will always be that loud group of people who claim those characters are P word unless they have legacy status. Even then there will be exceptions (Like Athena in the King of Fighters games, who is actually a personal top favorite of mine). Not sure if it's a minority cuz in my experience it's p0retty common.

And last I check she definitely earned that title since she's able to carry her job with ease, kick ass and take names, and has a daughter on top of that. And she is a very popular character last i checked too. Sometimes being the "perfect" character isn't always the problem cuz thing is sometimes those are characters who people can appreciate and strive to become. Even tho perfection among humans is not possible, it can still be admirable for trying. I'll be honest I don't know all of Viper's lore so if I'm missing anything or got some things wrong please fill me in.
I also like to believe that's why people like Ingrid, we can consider her a Mary Sue (even tho i just found out form someone else in the comments her being the originator or original owner of the Psycho Drive/energy was a mistranslation issue), but thing is, she's just a joy to have around. She's elegant, has attitude, powerful (why? Could be naturally gifted, could have worked for that power behind the scenes, who knows), and just has a beauty one can appreciate. If you ask me, I think the hatred toward these characters may be rooted in a general distaste towards "moe". Fighting game fans seem to prefer their female characters to be sexy and badass, not cute and girly. It's why characters like Chun Li and Cammy from Street Fighter, Baiken and I-no from Guilty Gear, or the Williams from Tekken are highly regarded while these girls are looked down upon. Even though these hated characters can kick just as much ass as the rest of their respective casts, the fact that they do so in a jovial and girlish way tends to put off a lot of players.

I'll tell you my theory: these characters conflict with the person's head canon. Like most fighting games play fast and lose with the story right. It allows players to make up their own story, for any one of the obviously not main characters to be the star of the show. This is Ingrid especially. I know in many folks heads Street Fighter didn't have litteral gods involved, it was about Mortal men doing Mortal men things...that were possible in this universe. Things change in alpha where Akuma at first talks like he's a literal demon. Look up his Alpha 2 ending, it reads not like he's Gouken's brother but like he's a demon who came to our world to "perfect his killing power". I think that's what the problem is. These people have built up a story in their head over multiple games and the introduction of these characters takes them right out of it, because they can't/won't fit these newbies into their canon.

And yes, I loved Ingrid from the very first time I played the game(despite fighting evolution not comparing in quality to something like Capcom vs SNK) and I even have 2 figures of Ingrid in my collection of fighting game characters statues. Cant say I love her as much as Athena Asamiya but I dont get how she can be hated. She is OP because she has psychic Sun Godess powers(she even claims Bison stole his psycho power from her). So its explained. She is strong. Its not like she is winning the fights by slaping. Even her normal strong punches contain a cutting psycho energy light!

While I would never describe these characters as "ruining fighting games", I don't think they are exactly good designs either? So I feel the dislike can be understandable if they are seen as bad designs that don't feel like they mesh with the established cast's cohesion. Frankly I have had this issue with most of SFV and KoF XIV's newcomers that tend to feel too cartoony or too lazily designed.
As for those mentioned in the video, I think Ingrid would have worked fine in a KoF or Rival Schools style game, but in SFA3 her moves felt super out of place, and the fact that she was a newcomer who was said to have this godlike power that came out of nowhere didn't help. I feel the reason Lili works while Lucky Chloe doesn't for me personally, is while Lili is also a very feminine fighter, her classy and stylish ballet kicks feel like they would hurt like hell and can make you buy something as impractical as ballet as a martial art. On the other hand, Lucky Chloe is hitting you with gloved cat paws, and her kicks feel like a lazy ripoff of Eddy Gordo. Plus it is really annoying how she takes an established veteran in the series like Eddy into a complete joke in both his and her story modes for a cheap attempt at humor (like how Gang-il reduces Kim Kaphwan into a whiny loser). As for Honoka I have no issues with her design since she fits her series just fine, but I find her use of other character's moves super lazy especially for a relatively recent character.

I love Lucky Chloe & Marie Rose, I love how proudly feminine and girly they are! It’s not often we get girl characters that’s just a girly girl & feminine; it’s usually one of two, with the classic hyper feminine which I personally love & the “I’m not like other girls” typeI especially nowadays which isn’t bad either but can be hit or miss if not written properly. In regards of these girls I was definitely in the minority in loving them as characters and their design & probably still am but I genuinely believe a lot of guys can’t deal nor handle losing to such a very “girly” character especially if they picked thee ultimate male character thinking it was going to be an easy win. In Tekken, there are nearly no female characters in fighting games that have difficulty matching the male ones.

This whole thing is honestly a really interesting conversation and notable how the three series at play in this video are the Japanese franchises that broke through to international markets the most among fighting games. There is a possible point to say due to their increased popularity that there are simply more people to complain about things. A thought on the matter I have had about these characters is how 3/4 of them fight with very little effort being shown. Effort is there of course but perhaps some of the more fragile egoed players among us can't handle losing when the character who bopped us is swatting air with sparkles, dancing or disarming with cutesy and harmless body language. Maybe it's a really base and really stupid idea that these characters are too much focused for a Japanese culture (or what many consider the Japanese culture)
This is honestly a super interesting talking point though, the idea of what would happen if Sakura, who is among the most popular SF characters showed up today for the first time and was just doing Shoto moves...interesting to think about tbh. Thanks for this video!

I am glad that Lucky Chloe character exists even if their personality is very annoying to me, the gameplay is very well tuned to make the opponent annoyed, it is like a weaponized annoyance. Though I kinda chose to have a headcannon that she actually has a much more Kazyua like personality and that the personality she presents is just the "cute" persona, while beneath that mask is a cruel and calculated sociopath. And what would make me like here more in the next instalment is that her persona gets to kind of slip off from time to time in gameplay. This would give the character the actual depth.

I don't think I'm in the minority when I say that what drew me into fighting games as a genre was the fact that every character looked and felt different from each other and I loved it (this is actually why I hate Brawlhalla because every character feels the same and they look like they're the same guy/girl cosplaying as all these different characters) I'd have a better understanding of why these characters specifically are hated because they suck to fight against i.e. Leo from GG Strive (another side note, I main Leo and he's really not that hard to fight against for me whether I'm also using him or not) or even Lucky Chloe herself. But the sentiment that a character "doesn't fit" only works in Mortal Kombat where they take themselves way too seriously up until the end of the match and someone decides to friendship. My headcanon here is that the hate for these characters comes from an extremely vocal minority like the amount of people that unironically enjoy Brawlhalla (yes I'm gonna continue dunking on that game, stop asking questions)

Lot's of characters are hated for being cheap, but that doesn't mean people hate their design and how they fit into the world of their respective game. There is different kinds of "hate" I guess. I hated fighting Bruce in T6 with his b+2 insta counter stun like Steve's b+1, but I would never say they don't fit the world of Tekken because they are badass and definitely great for the roster. Kick Josie out and bring back Bruce.

They don't fit. You might be new to Tekken if you think they do. And no the bears do not count. Just look at the trajectory of Tekken and how they embraced the wacky parts too much in the later installments. There's a reason why legacy characters are generally more popular than the newcomers starting from T6 onwards.
Also hating a fighting game character isn't all about gameplay. Fighting games still have an established world and lore that made people love it. An aesthetic that brought them to it. And a change in that to cater the new gen isn't going to always sit well. You can tell with what type of characters they made for Tekken as it went on. Chloe is just one. Kat, Claudio, Bob, Alisa, Josie, etc. They stray farther and farther from Tekken's initial feel which was inspired by VF. I get it, new times, new audiences. I'm an oldschool Tekken fan. Obviously I'm not going to like the new anime-ish direction.

So it makes sense that a lot of people are gonna defend Lucky Chloe’s addition to the roster, considering that we didn’t mind the numerous of ridiculous characters of the game. Yes, everybody else is free to dislike Lucky Chloe, but the characters that we have a personal dislike for are the sole reason why we need to remind ourselves that “CHARACTER SELECTION” exist across the screen for a reason.

I think you're getting Ingrid confused with Devilotte de Death Satan from Cyberbots. Ingrid didn't show up until 2004. The hatred sort of stemmed from the fact Ingrid debuted in one of the most terrible fighting games known to man. Arguably Capcom Fighting Jam/Evolution started the Fighting Dark Ages (Others say it was Street Fighter 3 but from what I seen in retrospect, it was Fighting Jam). Along with people not liking frilly cutesy girlie characters cuz they glorify "P word", even though that's not how that works.
EDIT: I missed the part about Ingrid and psycho energy. It turned out according to someone in the comments, Ingrid being the original owner of the Psycho Energy was not true, but a mistranslation error. She actually was searching for Bison cuz he stole a seal to psycho energy. The seal, those hair ornaments she wears apparently.

i think the hate comes from the archetype they embody, the "tsundere little sister" archetype and that archetype isnt recieved well in the western world, if somebody irl was this cocky this smartass and dealing this level of mild abuse (of the kind seen in many tsundere) anyone whould have the urge to cave their face in for causing me pain without any reason, and that is how they appear in the games, reveling in your character's pain and your anger as if they looked at the screen and smiled at you, and when you end that match in that angered state you cannot place it to the opponent bc either you dont have one to blame or its online and you cant get mad at a gamer tag and a single match, so you direct that anger that was created by this character into the character and your wishes to never see them again
just watching this video without playing any of these games i got why so many hate them

@AT Productions "I mean, given how these series also feature villains who are utter bastards who killed, injured and sometimes rape people, are these "tsundere girls" really THAT problematic to have in a fighting game?"

    • @leithaziz2716
      @leithaziz2716 3 года назад +4

@AT Productions I think the difference is that some people try to dissonate lore from characters as 2 different things. Like SugerPunch said, people like to see those two aspects as 2 different things and try to see only the gameplay when they play, call it ludonarrative dissonance (maybe they're ashamed of the plot and try to keep it away from them when playing. I personally cant really seperate them and dont know about how Max does it, I feel like its not for the best thatt he tries to seperate them so hard.)
They wont know these characters are killers or rapists, but the "anime" looking characters tell everything from one glance at them. You wouldnt know that Jin caused WW3 by just looking at him, but someone like Lucky Chloe kinda tell you everything about them without needing to dig into the lore (You metion that it's just an act by Chloe herself, but most people dont wanna go through her arcade ending because they already hate her based off of 1st impressions). You wouldnt know that Ramlethal tried to kill everyone from just looking at her, she gives off a very "fetish-ised" aesthetic and that's your first impression of her. You might find Millia or I-No more approachable by their design, not knowing the former's an assassin and the latter is the Wild Card of the series. Hope that gave you some insight on how some might approach these characters.

    • @tomasavendanozacarias5205
      @tomasavendanozacarias5205 3 года назад +5

@AT Productions yes but in this scenario of a normal match, the reaccion to loosing to them is different from the villain archetype
when m bison wins it feels like a saturday morning cartoon villain winning and continuing their plan for world domination, which elicits a "damn i realy gotta get stronger to deafeat them"
when this archetype wins its more of a, a random kid came and kicked your character's ass for no reason(and by extent you), which elicits a "THE AUDACITY OF THIS BITCH"
it feels a lot more personal to be defeated by one of them than by m bison bc for m bison "its just another step in my plans"

Chloe was just... annoying to fight for a lot of reasons, and that really didn't help. Her Rage Art, which especially in low ranks gets spammed as soon as people get it, does more damage than other characters, which could lead to comebacks off an invincible reversal deleting most of someone's HP. Not so much of a problem at higher ranks where people can block, but for casuals, it's pretty annoying. She also just generally has a kit designed to steamroll new players. Lots of attacks that are very easy to perform and require more than the basic fundamentals of blocking to deal with. Again, not at all a problem at higher ranks. For casual players, she's obnoxious to deal with and deals way too much damage for how easy she is. For experienced players, her basic tricks don't work on them and she really has to work for her wins.
Chloe's just kinda the perfect storm of being mechanically obnoxious and being hostile to a character the community adores. She's a fine addition to the game on her own merits, but handled pretty poorly as far as introductions go.

That's actually my central reason for not liking Ingrid. I remember buying Fighting Jam with so much excitement because it was finally a new 2D Capcom fighting game... and it played, looked, and felt awful and lazy. And then Capcom went dark for almost 10 years in the FG department. Ingrid was basically the mascot of the game with her being the only new face, so whenever I see her, all I remember is that disappointment. It's totally unfair and illogical, but it's where my brain goes with the character and why I cringe every time.

It definitely FEELS like people perceive she's a representative of one of the worst 2D Fighting game Capcom has ever produced, and as a result her inclusion in Alpha 3 MAX might've felt like an attempt to push this "rando OC" into the world of Street Fighter.
Which is interesting because that means people gave her much more importance than she really had in the grand scheme of things. Like if she were to become a Mascot Character (Her lore could easily help with that belief as well as being the only character with non-imported sprites in Fighting Jam) that Capcom would push everywhere and include on everything when in reality... No, it was just a neat character concept they could use and got to finish.
