    TIMELINE
1968 - Episodes 1, 2, 4 & 5 of The Dominators are recorded on 2-inch videotape. Episode 3 is recorded direct to 35mm film. 16mm copies of all episodes are created by BBC Enterprises for overseas sales.
1969 - The 2-inch master videotapes containing Episodes 1, 2, 4 & 5 are wiped for re-use. The BBC Film Library retain the 35mm transmission master of Episode 3, whilst BBC Enterprises hold original film recording negatives of all five episodes.
1970 - The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) screen The Dominators regionally over a period of several months from April. Their 16mm prints of Episodes 4 and 5 are physically spliced to remove four moments of violence deemed unsuitable for broadcast by the Film Censorship Board. The trimmed segments of film are filed away.
1975 - The ABC return their 16mm prints of The Dominators to BBC Enterprises in London, including the edited fourth and fifth episodes.
1977 - No longer able to sell the story for broadcast, BBC Enterprises offer the original film recording negatives to the BFI, along with the ex-ABC prints. Negatives of The Krotons and The War Games are also offered at this time. This is not standard practice, as unwanted material is usually placed in a skip and destroyed.
1978 - The BBC Film & Videotape Library request the return of The Dominators; the BFI send the ex-ABC film prints which effectively become the BBC's archive masters.
1985 - The Dominators is made available for overseas sale once again. The story airs in the United States during February 1986 and in Canada during 1989.
1990 - BBC Video release The Dominators on VHS in the UK on 10th September. The back cover erroneously claims the episodes are "original unedited black and white recordings". Barely two weeks later, the story is screened as part of a Doctor Who Weekend on UK satellite channel BSB.
1993 - Satellite channel UK Gold screen The Dominators in episodic and omnibus formats. It would later be repeated again several times during 1998 and 1999.
1994 - A complete unedited 16mm film copy of Episode 5 is returned to the BBC.
1996 - Damian Shanahan tracks down censor clips from many Doctor Who stories screened in Australia, including the four trims made to The Dominators during 1970. It is hoped the material can be used to restore the story for future broadcast/release.
2005 - During preparation for the DVD release of The War Games, Steve Roberts of the Restoration Team discovers the original Enterprises film recording negatives of The Dominators at the BFI. They are complete and in excellent condition.
2010 - The Dominators is released complete and restored on DVD, using the rediscovered film recording negatives of Episodes 1, 2, 4 & 5 and the original 1968 master transmission print of Episode 3.

This is why I respect the Restoration Team so much. Even comparatively rubbish, not very well-liked stories get as much TLC as the big fan favourites. Nice job as always, Mr M.

Oh, Enid Mawson. If only the BBC had followed what you had done. We would have so many more classics in the archives.

The first time I saw the Dominators was on a tenth generation fan copy, years before it was released on video. By comparison the VHS version was pristine compared to what was available at the time! It was literally like watching the VHS version through a snowstorm. And the audio! Praise be the Restoration Team.

You're one of Doctor Who fandom's greats, Pip. I really mean that. This kind of work is invaluable. It's the kind of thing I can do on paper, and write about, but the way you make these miniature documentaries doing the same thing is astounding. Just great stuff.

During 1986, when American PBS stations were offered the recovered 1960’s stories (like 16 Hartnell, and only 5 Troughton) in “movie-edit”….it was a real twist to go from “the war machines” to “the dominators”. Did not realize that the UK, or Aust’, NZ, or even Canada may not have access to 60’s Who, then. I recorded on the family Beta video.
While we had the 5th Doctor stories, just before 1st and 2nd existing…would not get the 6th Doctor until 1987/‘8 when many plot B points were spoiled by DWM.
One could tell, in the Sixties movie-edits, change in episodes by quality of the film.

This is the best comparison video you have done in a while, very detailed and enjoyable to watch. The history of the story and it's different surviving prints is a story all of its own. I know it's not a very well loved story and the behind the scenes production issues explain why this is probably so however i did enjoy watching this serial for the first time in 1990 when I purchased the VHS 📼 release.

I love how in-depth these are and as a kid getting the original doctor Who VHS it brings back a lot of good memories. Even though all the VHS are in the loft haha

I love these kinds of videos, thanks. Looking at the censor clips as presented here, I can see why they were made even if they are a bit tame by today's standards. Teel's cries as he is tortured, and the shot of Balan (I think) staggering around after being shot, and then being shot again, are still a bit brutal!

Like how in one of the censor clips from _The Smugglers,_ the dead man's eyes are staring right at the viewer.
And when the bobby gets deleted in part five of _The Invasion,_ you can tell he's suffering as his death comes upon him.

I'm not sure if it's an underrated story but I understand a lot of fans do not like it. But it's one of my fav classic Doctor Who. I first sew it on the DVD.

Coincidentally, Enid Mawson used to live quite close to Madeley Road in Ealing.

That was an excellent in depth video Pip , loved it 👍
I think I’ve mentioned it before but would love to see a comparison done with the Dalek films as they’ve changed a lot from VHS to DVD to the latest Blu Ray in sound and vision

Sad trivia but I believe this is the only DW VHS to not list the running time on the back cover (although I believe it should be 120 minutes).

Heresy it may be, but I'd still love to have unrestored version of all B+W 60s DW as a dvd/bluray option.

Wouldn't the frame rate for episode 3 all be the same if it was shot on film?
