In my marching band some of the instructors were in this show and they explained the story of the baritone that is thrown onto the field in the very beginning of the show. Basically one of the baritones (Tyler Miller, who was one of our bands' instructors a few years ago) left his baritone in a parking lot somehow and it got ran over by a pick-up truck. When the Cadets instructors found it Tyler was punished but the rest of the band kept the baritone and played soccer and other games with it after practice was over. It eventually was added to the show to be thrown across the field at the start (can be seen at 0:21). This story was told by another instructor who was a tuba in this show.
So thats why Tyler was fired from my marching band staff last year. Just kidding. but he actually got fired for unprofessional conduct or something like that lol. I remember all his "yalls", and that. RIP Tyler Miller
13:15 I miss that amazing feeling and sense of accomplishment you get after a big powerful ending at a competition. Just the built up momentum and all the hard work you put into the show for months is payed off.
And then there's Blue Devils 94 ("My Spanish Heart", featuring "Spanish Fantasy" and other music by Chick Corea- what a weird piece), which I *think* is still one of the only, if not the only, "down" endings in a DCI championship-winning show. If you watch it again, look for the guard guy at the top of the heart made by the flags laying on the field--the one who jumps a field version of a figure skater's double axel, except from a dead stop, in the last five seconds or so of the show. Good God.
I literally still cannot wrap my head around this show. Being in guard, I personally love the guard work during amazing grace and when the angels start to use the demon's flags. Love love LOVE
This was the first ever DCI show I saw, along with many of my bandmates. It was during band camp in my first year of marching band. We were sat down after dinner in a big hall. Seeing this show on the projector and the big, full sound the entire corps blasting through the PA system was just mind blowing. It helped that the theme was easy to understand too for a bunch of 13 year olds. The full sound of the brass, the amazingly choppy and clean beats from the drumline, the expressive playing from the front ensemble, and the super clean and graceful visuals from the colour guard. It was such a big inspiration. RIP Cadets, FHNSAB.
I'm one of those people who loved the drum corps activity up until the last 10 years or so (I miss the G bugles like a lot of the "old school" fans do)..... HOWEVER, I must say this show was absolutely amazing. Their gold medal finish was definitely well-deserved. Despite the high physical demand these kids had, they played and spun so well.
The thing about using Bb horns is that more people can play them. DCI wanted to facilitate the inclusion of more high-level performers, but no matter how good you are, there's always a learning curve moving from a three-valve Bb instrument to a two-valve G bugle. Yes, they were higher and brighter (and harder to play in tune!), but I really think DCI produces better shows now because half the season isn't being spent getting used to a new instrument with different fingerings.
I have yet to watch a show that gives me the same feeling as this one. It's an amazing show and i've never seen one better. There are shows that are build more to win and more to entertain. This one does both. I wish i could of seen it live. Anyone have a time machine that can't transport me back to 2011.
I can't believe it took me 9 years to come across this victory run. An incredible show, and an excellent production job by the video crew. My heart is pounding.
after almost 9 years, i came back to this piece to enjoy it. The Cadets really killed this show "Between angels and Demons" the whole field showed a story.
I think it would've been cool for all the demons to use gold instruments, sort of like how they changed the colors of their drums to match their uniforms. I don't really know if there is a difference between silver plate and gold plate sound wise, but the visual would be cool!
And another thing I just thought of, it probably wouldn't work but the angels stepping out on their right foot, and demons on the left, that would also be cool!
Gold and silver. There is no better or worse. Only preference. Gold is darker while silver is brighter. If gold was worse professionals would never use them.
The ballad is beautiful, the beginningnof the ballad, and amazing grace, also, this is my favorite cadets show. #YouthEducation #CadetsDrumAndBugleCorps
I think I recognize it as a dissonant version of a melody from a church hymn! I can't remember the exact lyrics to it, but I know the very last phrase that they play the words went something like "praise God, praise Son (maybe lol can't remember exactly), praise Holy Ghost" No idea what the hymn was called though
Frank Ticheli arranges beautiful music with the -hummable- main melody restated many times through the piece. I suggest you listen to his Amazing Grace, Loch Lomond or Shenandoah, more traditional arrangements. As for corp's from the 70's and 80's, many former members are teaching major corps (Carolina Crown, Blue Devils) and taking DCI to a new level based on what they learned along the way. Never forget that you would not have your I-Pad if it wasn't for the transister and circuit board.
DCI should do more video recordings this close! I don't care if it would look a bit "amature" this adds a lot more depth to the show! The closest I've ever been to a show was finals night when a demon colorguard was changing at the end zone into her angel costume... Wow I kept looking at her because she did all her performance right at me! She looked at me and I couldn't take my eyes off of how she was performing to the angelic look.
The end of this video gives me the same feeling I had toward the end of my performance in 2008. Sweaty, crying, goosebumps and massive amounts of adrenaline.
Amazing cinematography of one of the most epic shows in DCI history. But they should have show footage of the pit throwing down during their feature. Best pit in DCI. Where's the love for them? Great filming nevertheless. Thanks for posting!
Yes I marched cadets 06/07. Not all gauntlets have wings on them. They were gauntlets that covered up our wrists from the uniform sleeve. It overlapped our white gloves so there was no skin showing. Check it again
In my band one of the assistant directors was in this show he played the Mello in the demon side. He told the backstory on how they got the broken Mello they slammed. Apparently it got ran over by a car.
you can't deny that while XtraordinarY was a good show, it definitely was NOT the Cavaliers that we're all used to. I think that's what brought it down for a lot of folks.
Every year in DCI is amazing, but each year every group gets better and better. More and more people, who might not even play a single instrument, are becoming fans of DCI because of the shows they put on. I'm not saying that a 1990's DCI show isn't great, it just keeps getting better each year. Plus music evolves over the years, which mean DCI evolves as well.
We wore gauntlets from 2003-2006. I marched 06 and 07, I guarantee I wore a pair of gauntlets in 06. Then we switched uniform companies and went back to the older style in 07 and got rid of the gauntlets. Hope this clears things up
The very best corps - i.e. those that have won championships - have a signature brass sound that is uniquely theirs: you can hear just a snippet of their show and, with no prior intro or visuals/unis to go off of, immediately identify the corps in question. The two most notable examples, IMO, are Devs and Crown.
Any corps and their staff is free to use whichever technique they choose. I do believe that most corps use 2nd position as their standard, but Cadets' technique varies from the rest of DCI. That's what you get everywhere you go. Subtle differences. It's all personal preference of the staff. :)
This is cool to watch now. And I like multi cam to an extent. I do however despise how they do multi cam when they show performances at the cinema. So much is missed. I prefer to watch full cam until I get something on dvd. This would be a cool feature for each corp as well.
This was one of the MOST deserved wins I've personally ever seen.

+Benjamin Franklin thats so cool
I can confirm that this is exactly what happened. and boy was it funny
What was his punishment
So thats why Tyler was fired from my marching band staff last year. Just kidding. but he actually got fired for unprofessional conduct or something like that lol. I remember all his "yalls", and that. RIP Tyler Miller
Benjamin Franklin I marched Bushwackers ( dca corps ) their 2016 season. Tyler Miller was our drum major.
This story definitely got told a lot.
I bet the drum major literally felt like God.
Felt like god but is dressed as Satan?
@@turnr3326 Only his top half is red. His bottom half is white

Once the time machine is invented, I'm going to audition for the 2011 Cadets.

RIP Cadets, FHNSAB.
The President doesn't even feel the power close to what the drum major for this show did.
I love how they used Frank Ticheli's Angels in the Architecture piece at the beginning
such a powerful closer holy moly
holy indeed ;)
I'm literally still watching this years later and to this day it is still the BEST show I've ever seen and will always remain an all time favorite

I pray the Cadets return to this LEVEL of excellence in the future.
Not likely to happy any time soon
Meh hasn’t happened yet…
I much prefer the camera direction in this compared to the official DCI Championship version.
I should really do my homework now...
same
Your comment was ahead of its time
DCI Bungus it is
So this managed to beat the Cavaliers' epic quad feature/marimba split runs.
Impressive.
Cavaliers won high percussion that year
They damn well better.
META_mahn still have not seen a better percussion performance than cavs 2011. cleanest line i've ever heard.
***** Cadets 2013*,
+mdross95 Phantom 08 was solid
Best money I ever spent was to go to these finals! This video doesn't do it enough justice.
So sad seeing you guys go. It’s the end of an era, but hopefully the beginning of a new one.

i love the percussion solo so much
I think one of my favorite parts about this is when Hop comes out onto the field at the end in his baseball jersey.
This show concept was simply AWESOME!
I love the feeling of when you finish the show and cant help but smile because you know you did amazing :D
I honestly almost get teary eyed every time I watch this show, it's absolutely beautiful and amazing
RIP Cadets. Always will be my favorite corps.
I can't believe it took me 9 years to come across this victory run. An incredible show, and an excellent production job by the video crew. My heart is pounding.
My band director showed my class this.. Its awesome :D
I know right?? I was the only one watching.. Everyone else wasn't even interested..
+ThatOneNerd did you just....
My band director was in this
This show still gives me chills every time I watch it.
Every show needs to be recorded like this!!! Tons of emotion that you can't capture from the sideline...
after almost 9 years, i came back to this piece to enjoy it. The Cadets really killed this show "Between angels and Demons"

Yeah that would be cool! I know for euphoniums silver plate puts out a better sound quality though.
Jacob Wright Same with mellophones.
And another thing I just thought of, it probably wouldn't work but the angels stepping out on their right foot, and demons on the left, that would also be cool!
cooljw1 That woulda made the drill look a bit messy. Good idea though.
Gold and silver. There is no better or worse. Only preference. Gold is darker while silver is brighter. If gold was worse professionals would never use them.
Literally gives me chills every single time I watch this. Outstanding.
I think I've watched 4:50 - 6:25 about 4-10 times a day on repeat for the last month or so...
kunaal shah same bro
Who needs porn when you have this, try it sometime lol
I just love so much how the drums match the uniforms here and stuff. I'm just a huge nerd but I love it hahaha.
What a great moment it must be when at the end of your show, after being named champions, the last movement is you putting up a number 1.
Oh My God! Amazing. One of my favorite visual shows ever!
Bring back this version of cadets plz 🙄
-2012 alum
The ballad is beautiful, the beginningnof the ballad, and amazing grace, also, this is my favorite cadets show. #YouthEducation #CadetsDrumAndBugleCorps
I love the cadets, and i've seen this video before but i was just looking back before the championships this weekend, so excited!
Wow it must be the best feeling in the world after performing this show.
the demon ballad feature is so hauntingly beautiful...I love it.
What is it based off of??
I think I recognize it as a dissonant version of a melody from a church hymn! I can't remember the exact lyrics to it, but I know the very last phrase that they play the words went something like "praise God, praise Son (maybe lol can't remember exactly), praise Holy Ghost" No idea what the hymn was called though
Ahh Yes! Thank you Carson!
Matthew Fanguy No problem!
the opener angels of architecture is being played by the wind ensemble at my school

This is one of my favorite routines
Amazing cinematography of one of the most epic shows in DCI history. But they should have show footage of the pit throwing down during their feature. Best pit in DCI. Where's the love for them? Great filming nevertheless. Thanks for posting!
Favorite show, followed by SCV 2018 and BD 2011
One of my top 5 all time favourite shows
Wow that was the closest thing to being there competing every night with the same corps. What a beautiful performance and film.
I remember seeing this live at Stanford Stadium! And this is such amazing footage!
Are those GOLD drumsticks...? 8D
The coolest video of a drum corps performance ever and the only comments so far are debating the merits of gauntlets?
is tht a broken horn in the beginning with the demons???
Yes, the story goes it got run over at some point during the tour and they incorporated it into the show.
Kevin Garrett They also have a Tuba that got sat on, you can see the angel using it in the beginning.
4:53 naruto run
As long as the brass is loud and in-tune, ill be watching DCI.
George Hopkins just rolls up on the field like a boss
!!!He rol🎶led out of this corps sadly. He should have kept it professional!!!

This show is awesome
by far my favorite DCI show ever... Actually thats debatable, cause the Blue Devils 2014 show was just aghgaaaa!!!!!
Alex Melhuish have you seen frameworks? This show is amazing but I think cavies topped it in 02. Just my opinion though
Still one of the best Core performances I've ever witnessed. #Angels
Gives me chills everytime ugh

Cavaliers front ensemble was amazing last year
best show of 2011 hands down!! :D
Am i the only one hearing a "woah!" at 2:19 ?
No it's there for sure. Probably another drummer telling someone to stop doing something. But yeah there for sure.
It's probably them being excited cause they are killing it and just won finals! Our battery does the same thing.
I love this show!!!!
I have to say that this really did kick XtraordinarY's butt...I'm a huge Cavaliers fan so this is kinda rare coming from me...
Its the opening solo from "Angels in the Architecture" by Frank Techelli, great song.
In my band one of the assistant directors was in this show he played the Mello in the demon side. He told the backstory on how they got the broken Mello they slammed. Apparently it got ran over by a car.
0:06 that guy just threw that horn like it was nothin'
LMAOOO
12:35 is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I love the guy screaming his ass off at the end and just the looks on their faces
OMG the end was beautiful!

the Cadets had gauntlets from 2003-2006, those were the only years that they had them. The design that included them was done by Michael Cesario
Does anybody else notice that the Cadets sound different from all of the other corps?? To me something sounds off and I don't know what
Tom Eder it also has to do with orchestration and who composes their music.

Drumline kicks brass.
That bluecoats variation

This is why we all love YEA.
it’s a bird! it’s a plane! it’s a yamaha baritone!
So. Much. Greatness.
That stick tape was really cool! Gold for the angles and silver for the demons. Where can you get some like that?
