I am German, Liverpool is my club but I attend most Bayern home games. The difference is Bayern Munich for e.g has a dedicated section for fans chanting every second, sometimes the rest of the stadium goes quiet. But in anfield everyone is in unison which explains the quietness. I’m glad you enjoyed your time at anfield!

The crowd noise at Anfield is organic - there's no pre-planned song list, no trumpeteer banging out their standard fanfares, no drummers standing in the home end, banging away regardless of what is happening in front of them; every game will have its own unique 90 minutes of noise. That's why it is an atmosphere, not just a soundtrack.
@@Fiago I mean no disrespect, it's a difference. They want continual drums and set lists of songs - that's their choice, their culture. Liverpool culture is wit, imagination, improvisation. One of our best known crowd moments was when the crowd were chanting "Attack, attack, attack attack attack" but then a cat wandered onto the pitch. Without pause, the chant changed into "A cat, a cat, a cat a cat a cat". I don't think that would be possible if there was a constant soundtrack. It's a matter of opinion though - you pointed out that even in a huge match, packed with incident, there were moments of near silence; unthinkable for most German games. Pointing it out isn't an attack on Anfield fans, it's showing a difference. Football would be a duller game if every fanbase was the same.
The Ultra groups are a lot better than the premier league by a mile. English fans are a joke and money has took over the game now. We are becoming more like the yanks with it just being a business and 0 passion anymore from the fans. At least the Ultras are going out every match and enjoying the day of it and not just sat there until their team score a goal. That's the difference between ultras and English fans.
Comeback on a Champions League night it's a far better experience. Majority of the fans that come to weekend games are people just like yourself that have come for the first time or with family. When it's a round of 16 on a Tuesday/Wednesday night the meaning of the Anfield experience truly comes alive!
Fully agree with what you said, CL night and less tourists, more vocal fans in the crowd. Had some really great CL nights at Anfield and come out of there hardly able to talk.

As an egyptian, watching the match from home was something special. Been a fan for 6 years or about since Salah went to liverpool. It’s grown into a love for the club and not just Salah himself. But watching that Salah goal live was AMAZING. I started yelling in arabic I was so happy to see him back on form. Especially since i didn’t know if that rangers hatrick was a one off thing.
I had a young Egyptian girl and her mum sat next to me last season when Mo broke away to score. The young girl was hyper-ventilating as Mo ran in on goal. I thought she would faint in her excitement. Great to see.
I saw the Liverpool v Ajax match this season. Had the same thoughts. Quiet at times but when some action happens, oh my god does it get loud. I think Liverpool fans react to situations in the game to help lift the team in that moment. The ajax ultras on the other hand were singing almost all game long regardless of what was happening. Don't know which is better, but I personally love the targeted style of chanting to situations, especially when bantering the opposition

Portsmouth fan here, I have been to Anfield several times and I can honestly say when the home fans start singing you’ll never walk alone it is absolutely awesome and gets to you emotionally with goose bumps……being a sports fan the only thing I can think of to match it is when the Welsh sing their national anthem at rugby union internationals. Not a Liverpool fan but 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The Anfield atmosphere has always depended on the performance, the opposition and when the team needs backing. It’s never been consistently loud, even in the 70’s and 80’s. Obviously most of us would like it to be a wall of singing for 90 minutes, but the visceral nature of it is what makes it what it is. It’s like an orchestra and conductor. It can be bloody awful sometimes, a Saturday mid day against Southampton (no offence Southampton) or when we’re cruising. But it can be like nothing else when it really matters. Personally, the constant drone of ultras does nothing for me. It tells me nothing about the game. I like the crowd to react to the play, including the away fans (who can be excruciatingly embarrassing themselves sometimes). But that’s just me.
Completely agree. Visiting fans who turn up and go away saying it’s a library are usually after games that are not a knife edge. As Liverpool are successful, most teams they play you are not in fear of losing and doesn’t mean so much but once there is a lot on the line or there’s a sense of injustice or wrong doing then that’s when you will see anfield come to life.
There are many other factors that have changed the atmosphere over the last 15 years in particular. It is generally an ageing crowd, especially in the Kop. Very few youngsters. The cost of the game and the difficulty getting tickets means that young groups of people cannot regularly stand together and create a regular atmosphere. The Scouse core has dwindled, and the main thing that has been lost at Anfield is the quick, witty retort to away fans because of it. It’s a dispirit crowd now with no ultimate direction. The club could make the atmosphere so much better by creating large sections of affordable season tickets for young local residents to form collectives and come up with new songs and traditions for the rest of the ground to follow, but it doesn’t benefit them financially - so they won’t.
This is what I love about English football it’s reactive to what is happening on the pitch. When I go to German games the noise is good but it’s like a constant beat and doesn’t matter sometimes what is happening on the pitch, I’ve literally looked at the fans behind the goal sometimes with the cheerleader on the platform and a goal has gone in and they don’t react sometimes as their mid chant. I don’t think it gets as explosive as it can get in England.
In some points you are right. But in my opinion the german way is better. In England, If the game is boring there isnt any noise. In Germany tho the fans support their team regardless of the score or how nice the game is. Also it is not true that germans dont react to a goal.

When Anfield is at its best, there is nowhere better. Your right that when it goes quiet, it goes really quiet but winning or losing, this lot are always behind there team. They feel every moment. It's just an amazing place to be. A great video this pal. Love your honesty.

I think it's very important you added the moment at 5:05, because I believe Anfield is the best 'reactionary' crowd in the world. That has it's good and bad sides. For example, when we played Dortmund in 2016, you could argue Dortmund had the more 'constant' noise in there ground, they sing and bang a drum almost at the exact same noise from minute 1 to minute 90. That too can have it's good and bad sides. But, Liverpool never were 'rattled' by the atmosphere at the Signul Igunda Park. I feel a constant noise is, not real? It feels forced and an opposition team just gets used to it. When Dortmund came to Anfield, there's a moment when Dortmund are WINNING 3-2, Liverpool have just won a corner. And the crowd is ROARING, the Dortmund players, lead by Hummles gather into a little huddle in front of the Kop for a little pep talk, because they can all feel their heads going, they are being caught up in the crowd atmosphere, thats reacting to the moment. Dortmund, an hour beforehand were cool, calm, calculated and raced into a 2-0 lead while the atmosphere was 'flat'. But then Anfield reacted, it's a very emotional stadium. We all know what happened that night. Likewise with Barcelona in the 4-0, most fans I knew went there utterly depressed from Kompany's goal the night before, and just "went because I feel like I have to" and not because they wanted to, but an hour later they were roaring at the top of their voices while a team that had tore them apart just a week beforehand were completely frozen and shell shocked. That's Anfield. edit: sorry you basically say this yourself at the end, but I think that's why I prefer to have an emotional stadium, that kicks every ball with the team.
the atmosphere in the dortmund game was one of the best i've experienced. I remember when it went 2-0 early, the crowd dropped a bit, for a few minutes, then they picke dup back up again, the team reacted, and it was absolutely bouncing from that point on, even when we conceded again. it was an insane atmosphere.
Probably the best summary so far yeah. On the other hand many people say that fans who only support when the team is doing well aren't real fans and I somehow also get that but you need the context here at Anfield...it's just different
@@Fiago Its not just when we are doing well, if for example the team are losing the crowd would pump up the team to an extreme if they are showing signs of fight. On the other hand, if the team is just letting it happen, it can get quiet. The crowd and the team feed of each other.

You’re not reacting to something, you’re essentially having a party while a game a football is being played. I don’t ever want my crowd to be like that, it’s not authentic. I've attended a lot of Liverpool games, what I'd say is anfield atmosphere is incredible for the big games. But for games against smaller teams it can be quite lacklustre.
Great video giving a good idea of what it's like. Liverpool supporters are known as the most knowledgeable, so you'll get those quiet periods for that reason. If you ever get a chance, journey to Melbourne, Australia, take in an AFL (Aussie Rules) game at The MCG, involving teams from Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond. Biggest would be the ANZAC Day (25 April) game between Collingwood and Essendon, 90k-100k people, constant action and fan noise. No funny chants or such, but it'd be one of the most amazing sporting events you could attend.
9:57 - In the times I've been to Anfield, my bus home is at a certain time and if there's too much time added on (like in this game), by the time the game ends, it will take twice as long to get out because of the queue - but the bus is only once an hour. This is especially the case when it's a match on Sunday or the evenings. Also, if you drive to Anfield and leave at the end of the game, the traffic is horrible and you get stuck in a jam for literally hours. Hope that clarifies the situation.

And then you leave one of the biggest games, which is also on the brink, even though you can casually catch a local bus just an hour later? There are people who dream of being able to see the final minutes of a game like this.

Great video Fiago and you captured the essence very well! One thing I would recommend next time is avoid the fan park outside the stadium, and go to the pubs around the stadium instead. The pub is the more traditional pre-match routine for most people, and you can get more singing (the beers are much cheaper too....). The fan park in England is a much more modern concept, and one that most people outside of the families tend to avoid.
Liverpool fans are really good, but there are lots and lots of elderly fans in the ground who barely sing or make noise. I dont mind them because they are loyal fans, but they dont help that atmosphere.
In general they don't, but if they see something truly rare, they sing and shout like they are young again. I remember how hoarse Ian Rush sounded after the Barcelona comeback.
I’m both a St.Pauli fan and Liverpool fan, I find the difference between German and English fans is really the atmosphere regarding chants. The German Ultras in every team seem to do the same thing, just bang drums and sing Ole non stop. I think English fans seem to show more backing behind their team with personal chants. With that being said St.Pauli have an unreal atmosphere when the fans sing their personal chants or just back the team in general it’s something else.
Im a fan of the ultra culture but the thing that I love about Liverpool fans and chants is that they really feel connected to the players. When they scream "Mo Salah!" It just hits different
We have a very, what you would call a "Reactive" very knowledgeable football crowd. Thats why during tense moments it will often go silent. I always say to my dad that sometimes our fans need a big catalyst (bad tackle or opposition player being an asshole) to get the crowd up and at it. But once that happens it can be ferociously loud. But thats what I love about ours, and English fans in general compared to some continental games. They are "in the game" and will react to every single small micro moment as well as the big ones. Glad you picked a good game to go to. It must have been wild in that second half lol.

I went to Anfield On a tour and I loved it. The stadium was amazing and the museum. Next stop is a game. YNWA The tour guide said who doesn’t support Lfc and someone said Borath or something and he shouted it and it was so loud. It was amplified and he explained that is the reason the roof is lowered.
Really enjoyed your video. I’ve supported the Reds for close to 50 flipping years! Yeah, I’m old but I started really young. Went to all of the matches in the 80’s and the atmosphere was incredible with a standing room Kop. My ears would literally ring after the match as it was so loud. I live in Canada now so haven’t been recently and the atmosphere appears different from what I experienced. There are definitely more quiet spells but when it’s on, it’s really on. European nights under the lights against good opponents is unparalleled in my opinion. In the Premier it seems to depend on the opposition. I have a question for you Fiago. Watching you when they were belting out YNWA and Allez Allez Allez it appeared to affect you in an almost, forgive me for saying, religious way. I ask because that’s how I always feel. Hairs on the back of your neck, almost tears in your eyes it’s so incredible. Is that how it felt to you? I could tell that you really “felt” it at the very least. Anyway, this was a fantastic video. @@Isleofskye Which team do you follow? I also used to watch Tranmere Rovers on the Friday night in the old 4th and 3rd division and then Liverpool on the Saturday. Still also support Rovers to this day too.

Great video. Good description of the atmosphere. Even when anfield is loud it has periods of the game we’re it’s quiet, it’s not like Germany or other European countries were you have an ultra culture. Personally (though both styles have their merits) I prefer it our way, it’s more spontaneous and in tune with the game, rather than a constant drone and some shirtless fella banging a drum, that has no relation to the game. To me atmosphere is more than just singing it’s tension, shouting for every throw in, getting on the oppositions backs, cheering for every tackle etc. The flip side to this is there are many games we’re the atmosphere is poor. Another thing is were you sitting. You would’ve experienced the atmosphere more intensely in the Kop. Great vid though will watch others now
I really enjoyed this video. I knew the score of the match and was still fist pumping when Salah scored and hearing the fans sing YNWA always tugs at my heart.
Fans have more of an impact on the players and refs this way. If you ever saw a horror movie with jump scare every 2 min you stopped being scared after 15-20min. But in a horror movie with "only" 7-8 realy well planned jump scares you get scared every time. That's how Liverpool crowd is imo. They watch the game and feel when they need to act to help their team. And this is coming from guy who lives in Split where Torcida is non stop supporting Hajduk for full 90min
hopefully you had a good night out in town too. 🍺the crowd comes alive on the big nights and when it needs to, barca being a good example, but not always for your 12.30 vs just another team. There isn't really an ultra culture so nobody with a drum directing a stand, it's a bit more spontaneous.
When we're quiet we are watching the game intently as a crowd. We are one of the most knowledgeable crowds in the world and to be that, sometimes you've got to really watch the game to see what's actually happening and not just get caught up in the to & fro. Somehow over the many years I've been going its developed into something we all do together for a few minutes! we're a different breed us Scousers! The chase is on!
I could be wrong; I imagine with Liverpool's poor start to the season there would have been quite a bit of anxiety in the stadium. It was pretty much a must win game really. I think pretty much every Liverpool champions league game at Anfield I've seen on T.V has sent shivers down the spine with the atmosphere. On a side note, Emirates stadium is rocking this season.

Liverpool fans arent constantly loud (england in general) like youll find in other places but Liverpool's fans feel so much more connected to the pitch than any other stadium in the world. Theres just nothing quite like 60,000 fans singing YNWA or screaming ALLEZ. The stadium reacts to the pitch both in a good way and a bad way sometimes. I think once the stadium expands and we'll be able to get a younger crowd in it'll get even louder. Since the tickets are pretty expensive a lot of the younger more energetic fans cant make it to most games and that plays a big part in it.
Anfield doesn't hold 60,000. I'm been to Candlestick Park quite a few times. Unless it's a big game it's like a fukcing library. And younger fans will never get in. Liverpool only has 25,000 season tickets and only 7000 of those live in Liverpool. Most tickets go to outsiders and tourists. How do you think this guy got a ticket ? My mate has been on the waiting list for 15 years. He was told recently it'll take another 10........and he's from Liverpool.

If youre talking about how more people FROM Liverpool deserve to be able to get/afford LFC tickets then i agree with you. I hope that this new stand would allow that to be a possibility. Im an American from New York and it's always been my dream to go to an Anfield game but obviously thats not easy since im in the US. Even then, i understand and support the desire for locals to be able to go to games.
Great video mate, i felt the same about Anfield, it was my dream since i was a waen and it was great but i felt the same about the silent periods specially because i´m from south america where the stadium NEVER shut out, we literally sing the whole ninety minutes, and much louder, Anfield is legendary, i loved it, and no disrespect, but any stadium in Argentina of any small club sounds louder, now River, Boca , Racing or Independiente that´s something else, you´ll be amazed, come hear it yourself. Again, great video.
There is a lot of factors there really. First, the standing Kop went. That was what gave Anfield its reputation back in the day. Back then you could queue up on the day, get a cheap ticket and get straight into the Kop. If you were older or didn´t want to make noise you would sit in others parts of the stadium. The Kop was famous not just for its songs and colour, but also its humour, and the way the entire stand would sway in a way that seems incredibly dangerous today. Nowadays its all-seater stadiums, much harder to get tickets, much more expensive tickets (unaffordable for most to go regularly even if you could get tickets), much harder to sit with your friends, and an increasingly ageing fanbase, and an increasingly middle class fanbase too. To top it all off, you now have a lot of people visiting Anfield purely to "experience" the atmosphere - which obviously makes it even harder to get tickets for younger diehard fans. For these reasons there is whole generations of younger fans that have not developed a culture of frequently going the game, and it is young people who make the most noise. This is the flip-side of the commercialisation of the game - the quality of football is sometimes mind blowing, but many of these older aspects that made for an overall match day experience are lost. The club now uses the reputation of the "Famous Atmosphere" to sell the club to new fans - whilst simulataneously killing the atmosphere with that very same commercialisation. South America has managed to retain its more traditional match-going culture in a way we haven´t in England - although its for that exact same reason of commercialisation and money that South America´s best players now head to England (which I think is sad - the South American leagues used to be famous) That is the first point. The second is that atmospheres in England (and Scotland) are just not the same as elsewhere, and they never have been. It is not like South America with the Barras Bravas or Europe with the Ultras - where there is a constant noise for 90 minutes. English fans have always reacted to the game in front of them. That means there is some games where the atmosphere is dead - even back in the old days of the standing Kop. However, it means when there is a high stakes games where the fans are really needed, they are able to react in a way that affects the game on the pitch, in a way that just isn´t present elsewhere. People really live the game on the pitch. When you have fans screaming for every tackle, every throw in, every decent pass, every bad refereeing decision, it can suddenly become incredibly difficult for the opposition and beneificial to the team. In those games, when the crowd is up, the adrenaline rush is like nothing I have experienced in South American or European footy. And it is those moments that leave opposition players disorientated in a way that constant singing won´t do. It is easier to learn to block out a constant background noise as a player. There may even be some quiet moments in those same games in England, but thats because the atmosphere is organic and not dictated by a drum or a megaphone or by some topless guy who isn´t even watching the game. The Barras Bravas and Ultras are great for the less important games, against smaller opposition. They bring lots of noise, colour and flavour and thats great - especially if you are visiting as a casual fan as I have done in Germany and Chile. But for that exact same reason, they are less impactful in the really important moments of a game. I can find the constant Ultras drone off-putting in the big games, and I have been to games where the noise barely raises for a goal because the Ultras are already mid-song. I do think Argentinian fans have some of the best songs in the world. Would love to visit one of the Buenos Aires clubs. I love German football culture too - that is a League that has not sold out to the highest bidder like in England, and the game still feels more connected to its roots.

I also think you are right that South American stadiums nowadays are louder and crazier then European stadiums - whether or not thye used to be I could not tell you. But basically, regarding Anfield and the Kop, many things have changed. Football has changed, society has changed, and the sport is flooded with too much moeny. The Kop was famous when it was an old standing terrace. It used to fit 32,000 people at its peak. Nowadays, with all seater stadiums (which were introduced after numerous deadly disasters in the 1980s - cheif among them Hillsborough) the whole of Anfield is 54,000, with only 12,00 in the Kop. When it was a standing terrace, you would pay the equivalent of £5 to get in. Now you can easily be paying ten times that. When it was a standing terrace you would just queue up and buy your tickets on the day, even for the very biggest games, and if you didn´t have the money or a ticket or might your luck by hopping over the barriers. Nowadays there is a crazy online ticketing system where you are competing with hundreds of thousands of people around the world for a ticket - and you are very lucky to get hold of one. Because it is seated, you often can´t sit with your friend, even if you can go regularly. The Kop is dominated by season ticket holders who started going to Anfield when it was the old standing Kop, and they have maintained that tradition to thih day (The Kop stopped being a standing terrace in 1994). However those people are now in their 50´s or older. In all the old days they would have moved off to the seating stands at the sides, allowing a new generation of young people into the Kop. Nowadays young people struggle to get tickets. Finally, some people now just see Anfield as an excuse to make money. When there is someone who has come to Anfield as a once-in-a-lifetime trip to "experience the atmosphere" and they are willing to pay £300 for a £50 ticket - some people will sell them it. It is sad that this happens, but money talks. For these reasons it is very hard to reclaim the Kop. Most of the time you can´t afford to get in the stadium, or can´t get tickets. The owners of these clubs are just happy to chase the money, so they won´t do anything about it. I think the only way to start to rescue the atmosphere would be to make the whole of the Kop have tickets that you have to queue up for on the day, first come first serve, for no more then £20. Then you might start to see younger fans going with their mates and sitting or standing together, where they will make noise. The finaly factor is society has changed. Football used to be a much more solidly working class sport. Nowadays, since it became monetised and unaffordable, much more of the match-going fanbase is dominated by middle class people who, generally, make less noise. Furthermore, people nowadays like to be glued to their mobile phones or trying to film the pitch for their instagrams. Society also used to be more violent. Football had a much darker side with hooliganism. If you wanted to sing and make noise you went in the Kop. If you were a hard-core scally and wanted to fight the away fans, you would go in the Anfield Road End - and leave the stadium ten minutes before the end of the game to wait for the away fans outside. Thankfully those days are long gone. But they also added that frenzied and anything-goes edge to an atmosphere. Nowadays, most of the local fans who used to go to the stadium, instead now watch the match in the pub with their friends, where there is quite frankly a better atmosphere a lot of the time!!! Hope that explains the difference between now and then. Those days are never coming back, for better and worse. I do think there is measure we can take to improve the atmosphere - but with English football so money oriented the owners are unlikely to take those decisions. Sadly, for these reasons, the game that started in England has become overcommercialised, overstanised, and lost its core essence, even if the football is better. I imagine in South america they have managed to retain their traditions and essence far better then in England. All that said, we do still get some great atmospheres in England, even if they are less frequent then days gone by.
Atmosphere at Anfield is of course going to differ from a huge game against quality opposition to a 12pm early kick off where everyone is tired and hungover against your Burnley’s of the world. It’s normal. That’s where the myth comes from that the atmosphere is not what it is cracked up to be. Fans of lesser sides turning up wondering why the atmosphere isn’t electric with the fans in full voice the whole 90 mins like they’ve seen on the telly or heard about. For them it is the World Cup final, where as for Liverpool it is just a run of the mill game that in all honesty they are expecting to win comfortably. The fans will still get behind the team but they aren’t gonna be up for it the same as they are for a Champions League semi final against Barcelona - and you’d be deluded to expect or think otherwise

Its the way anfield responds to the game which makes it special. Imagine being a player and hearing the stadium cheering for each involvement you make its like rewarding the players with a high when they are doing good so that players always try to get the next cheer. Its like the stadium demands high performance. So the silence makes sense because its a reaction to the real game not an ambient sound.

The only people who say the Anfield atmosphere is overrated are probably the jealous Mancs who know that Old Trafford has an atmosphere like a graveyard. In truth, Anfield most of the time is a good atmosphere but the big games, especially the big European nights are nothing like anywhere else in football. The CL semi against Barca in 2019 was one of the most amazing atmospheres ever witnessed in football. You made a good point about PL fans as we tend to be more reactive than Europeans. We can literally change a game with our voices and it has happened at Anfield so many times. When the Liverpool fans raise their game and get behind the team (with Klopp orchestrating) the power of the crowd can make opposition team shrink in size. Pep Guardiola summed it up perfectly in an interview when he said the Anfield crown can make you feel very small.
Anfield on big occasions is incredible. What I find with many Liverpool fans is there are many that are extremely nervous and that can affect the atmosphere to some degree but in terms of passion Liverpool are up there with any other fans. It's fair to say that not every game has a great atmosphere but when Anfield is rocking there's nowhere like it. Celtic also have an amazing atmosphere on big occasions.

Not just the noise but the joy amongst the people in the stadium is special. Complete strangers hugging each other withy joy. I've not witnessed that kind of passion anywhere else.

Anfield is setup for producing memories that last a lifetime, especially for fans who can only go there once or twice because of where they live. I encourage everyone who can, to see a match at Anfield because it is very special. I was lucky enough to have a friend with a season ticket seat in the Kop and I watched Liverpool play Southampton and stuff them 4-0. It wasn't close as a match and most of the Southampton players were afraid of possessing the ball for any length of time. The support from the Kop for the team was amazing.
I’ve been to Anfield and it’s been like a library and other times the atmos has been immense! I wouldn’t say it’s the best atmos in the world. Only having witnessed on tv, Celtic Park sounds electric, a lot of the German stadiums sound pretty awesome too. Anfield can be amazing at times but far from the best!
People who say its over rated are mostly fans from little teams Liverpool dont respect. We wont create an atmosphere for Bournemouth at 12:00 on a Saturday,..... A lot of it is people watching everything in the game. We dont just cheer for the sake of it.

As a LFC supporter, I personally don't mind when someone calls Anfield a library because LFC supporters are intelligent, rational and logical when it comes to dissecting footballing discussions. Another point about those silent moments is that, those cheering, appreciating and gasping after a prolong period of silence transfers to the energy and concentration levels of our players on the pitch and let's them know how invested and impressed we are of their footballing prowess and work ethics. That's the Anfield mentality monsters.
I've been to Anfield 2 times in 2005, I think once we sat at the Kop end and once in the main stand (on the side). it was fantastic. on the same trip, we also went to the City of Manchester Stadium as it was called before 2008, now it's called Etihad.

I am German, Liverpool is my club but I attend most Bayern home games. The difference is Bayern Munich for e.g has a dedicated section for fans chanting every second, sometimes the rest of the stadium goes quiet. But in anfield everyone is in unison which explains the quietness. I’m glad you enjoyed your time at anfield!

The crowd noise at Anfield is organic - there's no pre-planned song list, no trumpeteer banging out their standard fanfares, no drummers standing in the home end, banging away regardless of what is happening in front of them; every game will have its own unique 90 minutes of noise. That's why it is an atmosphere, not just a soundtrack.

One of our best known crowd moments was when the crowd were chanting "Attack, attack, attack attack attack" but then a cat wandered onto the pitch. Without pause, the chant changed into "A cat, a cat, a cat a cat a cat". I don't think that would be possible if there was a constant soundtrack. It's a matter of opinion though - you pointed out that even in a huge match, packed with incident, there were moments of near silence; unthinkable for most German games. Pointing it out isn't an attack on Anfield fans, it's showing a difference. Football would be a duller game if every fanbase was the same.
The Ultra groups are a lot better than the premier league by a mile. English fans are a joke and money has took over the game now. We are becoming more like the yanks with it just being a business and 0 passion anymore from the fans. As an egyptian, watching the match from home was something special. Been a fan for 6 years or about since Salah went to liverpool. It’s grown into a love for the club and not just Salah himself. But watching that Salah goal live was AMAZING. I started yelling in arabic I was so happy to see him back on form. Especially since i didn’t know if that rangers hatrick was a one off thing.

I saw the Liverpool v Ajax match this season. Had the same thoughts. Quiet at times but when some action happens, oh my god does it get loud.
I think Liverpool fans react to situations in the game to help lift the team in that moment.
The ajax ultras on the other hand were singing almost all game long regardless of what was happening.
Don't know which is better, but I personally love the targeted style of chanting to situations, especially when bantering the opposition

Portsmouth fan here, I have been to Anfield several times and I can honestly say when the home fans start singing you’ll never walk alone it is absolutely awesome and gets to you emotionally with goose bumps……being a sports fan the only thing I can think of to match it is when the Welsh sing their national anthem at rugby union internationals. Not a Liverpool fan but 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The Anfield atmosphere has always depended on the performance, the opposition and when the team needs backing. It’s never been consistently loud, even in the 70’s and 80’s. Obviously most of us would like it to be a wall of singing for 90 minutes, but the visceral nature of it is what makes it what it is. It’s like an orchestra and conductor. It can be bloody awful sometimes, a Saturday mid day against Southampton (no offence Southampton) or when we’re cruising. But it can be like nothing else when it really matters. Personally, the constant drone of ultras does nothing for me. It tells me nothing about the game. I like the crowd to react to the play, including the away fans (who can be excruciatingly embarrassing themselves sometimes). But that’s just me.
It changed a lot when stadiums went from standing to sitting but it is still an amazing crowd but mainly on a European night

Completely agree. Visiting fans who turn up and go away saying it’s a library are usually after games that are not a knife edge. As Liverpool are successful, most teams they play you are not in fear of losing and doesn’t mean so much but once there is a lot on the line or there’s a sense of injustice or wrong doing then that’s when you will see anfield come to life.
There are many other factors that have changed the atmosphere over the last 15 years in particular. It is generally an ageing crowd, especially in the Kop. Very few youngsters. The cost of the game and the difficulty getting tickets means that young groups of people cannot regularly stand together and create a regular atmosphere. The Scouse core has dwindled, and the main thing that has been lost at Anfield is the quick, witty retort to away fans because of it. It’s a dispirit crowd now with no ultimate direction. The club could make the atmosphere so much better by creating large sections of affordable season tickets for young local residents to form collectives and come up with new songs and traditions for the rest of the ground to follow, but it doesn’t benefit them financially - so they won’t.
I also dislike the constant drone of European games. Don’t get me started at fans with drums…
This is what I love about English football it’s reactive to what is happening on the pitch. When I go to German games the noise is good but it’s like a constant beat and doesn’t matter sometimes what is happening on the pitch, I’ve literally looked at the fans behind the goal sometimes with the cheerleader on the platform and a goal has gone in and they don’t react sometimes as their mid chant. I don’t think it gets as explosive as it can get in England.
In some points you are right. But in my opinion the german way is better. In England, If the game is boring there isnt any noise. In Germany tho the fans support their team regardless of the score or how nice the game is. Also it is not true that germans dont react to a goal.

I think it's very important you added the moment at 5:05, because I believe Anfield is the best 'reactionary' crowd in the world. That has it's good and bad sides.
For example, when we played Dortmund in 2016, you could argue Dortmund had the more 'constant' noise in there ground, they sing and bang a drum almost at the exact same noise from minute 1 to minute 90. That too can have it's good and bad sides. But, Liverpool never were 'rattled' by the atmosphere at the Signul Igunda Park. I feel a constant noise is, not real? It feels forced and an opposition team just gets used to it.
When Dortmund came to Anfield, there's a moment when Dortmund are WINNING 3-2, Liverpool have just won a corner. And the crowd is ROARING, the Dortmund players, lead by Hummles gather into a little huddle in front of the Kop for a little pep talk, because they can all feel their heads going, they are being caught up in the crowd atmosphere, thats reacting to the moment. Dortmund, an hour beforehand were cool, calm, calculated and raced into a 2-0 lead while the atmosphere was 'flat'. But then Anfield reacted, it's a very emotional stadium. We all know what happened that night.
Likewise with Barcelona in the 4-0, most fans I knew went there utterly depressed from Kompany's goal the night before, and just "went because I feel like I have to" and not because they wanted to, but an hour later they were roaring at the top of their voices while a team that had tore them apart just a week beforehand were completely frozen and shell shocked.
That's Anfield.
edit: sorry you basically say this yourself at the end, but I think that's why I prefer to have an emotional stadium, that kicks every ball with the team.
the atmosphere in the dortmund game was one of the best i've experienced. I remember when it went 2-0 early, the crowd dropped a bit, for a few minutes, then they picke dup back up again, the team reacted, and it was absolutely bouncing from that point on, even when we conceded again. it was an insane atmosphere.
Probably the best summary so far yeah. On the other hand many people say that fans who only support when the team is doing well aren't real fans and I somehow also get that but you need the context here at Anfield...it's just different

I've attended a lot of Liverpool games, what I'd say is anfield atmosphere is incredible for the big games. But for games against smaller teams it can be quite lacklustre.

If you ever get a chance, journey to Melbourne, Australia, take in an AFL (Aussie Rules) game at The MCG, involving teams from Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond. Biggest would be the ANZAC Day (25 April) game between Collingwood and Essendon, 90k-100k people, constant action and fan noise. No funny chants or such, but it'd be one of the most amazing sporting events you could attend.
9:57 - In the times I've been to Anfield, my bus home is at a certain time and if there's too much time added on (like in this game), by the time the game ends, it will take twice as long to get out because of the queue - but the bus is only once an hour. This is especially the case when it's a match on Sunday or the evenings. Also, if you drive to Anfield and leave at the end of the game, the traffic is horrible and you get stuck in a jam for literally hours. Hope that clarifies the situation.

Great video Fiago and you captured the essence very well! One thing I would recommend next time is avoid the fan park outside the stadium, and go to the pubs around the stadium instead. The pub is the more traditional pre-match routine for most people, and you can get more singing (the beers are much cheaper too....). The fan park in England is a much more modern concept, and one that most people outside of the families tend to avoid.

Liverpool fans are really good, but there are lots and lots of elderly fans in the ground who barely sing or make noise. I dont mind them because they are loyal fans, but they dont help that atmosphere.

I’m both a St.Pauli fan and Liverpool fan, I find the difference between German and English fans is really the atmosphere regarding chants. The German Ultras in every team seem to do the same thing, just bang drums and sing Ole non stop. I think English fans seem to show more backing behind their team with personal chants. With that being said St.Pauli have an unreal atmosphere when the fans sing their personal chants or just back the team in general it’s something else.
Im a fan of the ultra culture but the thing that I love about Liverpool fans and chants is that they really feel connected to the players. When they scream "Mo Salah!" It just hits different

We have a very, what you would call a "Reactive" very knowledgeable football crowd. Thats why during tense moments it will often go silent. I always say to my dad that sometimes our fans need a big catalyst (bad tackle or opposition player being an asshole) to get the crowd up and at it. But once that happens it can be ferociously loud.
But thats what I love about ours, and English fans in general compared to some continental games. They are "in the game" and will react to every single small micro moment as well as the big ones.

Yes, great video! Got to remember that anfield is currently only 54, 000 capacity, which is way lot less then Dortmond or Byerns. This time next year will be 61,000 and even louder!

The tour guide said who doesn’t support Lfc and someone said Borath or something and he shouted it and it was so loud. It was amplified and he explained that is the reason the roof is lowered.

Really enjoyed your video. I’ve supported the Reds for close to 50 flipping years! Yeah, I’m old but I started really young. Went to all of the matches in the 80’s and the atmosphere was incredible with a standing room Kop. My ears would literally ring after the match as it was so loud. I live in Canada now so haven’t been recently and the atmosphere appears different from what I experienced. There are definitely more quiet spells but when it’s on, it’s really on. European nights under the lights against good opponents is unparalleled in my opinion. In the Premier it seems to depend on the opposition.
I have a question for you Fiago. Watching you when they were belting out YNWA and Allez Allez Allez it appeared to affect you in an almost, forgive me for saying, religious way. I ask because that’s how I always feel. Hairs on the back of your neck, almost tears in your eyes it’s so incredible. Is that how it felt to you? I could tell that you really “felt” it at the very least.
Anyway, this was a fantastic video. Your English is superb and you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber. Really interested to follow you on your travels. Love that you visited Anfield. ( As an aside my youngest boys middle name is Anfield as I took my Canadian wife to a match on our first date! 😊)

Great video. Good description of the atmosphere. Even when anfield is loud it has periods of the game we’re it’s quiet, it’s not like Germany or other European countries were you have an ultra culture. Personally (though both styles have their merits) I prefer it our way, it’s more spontaneous and in tune with the game, rather than a constant drone and some shirtless fella banging a drum, that has no relation to the game. To me atmosphere is more than just singing it’s tension, shouting for every throw in, getting on the oppositions backs, cheering for every tackle etc. The flip side to this is there are many games we’re the atmosphere is poor.
Another thing is were you sitting. You would’ve experienced the atmosphere more intensely in the Kop. Great vid though will watch others now

I really enjoyed this video. I knew the score of the match and was still fist pumping when Salah scored and hearing the fans sing YNWA always tugs at my heart.
Fans have more of an impact on the players and refs this way. If you ever saw a horror movie with jump scare every 2 min you stopped being scared after 15-20min. But in a horror movie with "only" 7-8 realy well planned jump scares you get scared every time. That's how Liverpool crowd is imo. They watch the game and feel when they need to act to help their team. And this is coming from guy who lives in Split where Torcida is non stop supporting Hajduk for full 90min

When we're quiet we are watching the game intently as a crowd. We are one of the most knowledgeable crowds in the world and to be that, sometimes you've got to really watch the game to see what's actually happening and not just get caught up in the to & fro. Somehow over the many years I've been going its developed into something we all do together for a few minutes! we're a different breed us Scousers!

I could be wrong; I imagine with Liverpool's poor start to the season there would have been quite a bit of anxiety in the stadium. It was pretty much a must win game really. I think pretty much every Liverpool champions league game at Anfield I've seen on T.V has sent shivers down the spine with the atmosphere. On a side note, Emirates stadium is rocking this season.

Liverpool fans arent constantly loud (england in general) like youll find in other places but Liverpool's fans feel so much more connected to the pitch than any other stadium in the world. Theres just nothing quite like 60,000 fans singing YNWA or screaming ALLEZ. The stadium reacts to the pitch both in a good way and a bad way sometimes. I think once the stadium expands and we'll be able to get a younger crowd in it'll get even louder. Since the tickets are pretty expensive a lot of the younger more energetic fans cant make it to most games and that plays a big part in it.
Anfield doesn't hold 60,000.
I'm been to Candlestick Park quite a few times.
Unless it's a big game it's like a fukcing library.
And younger fans will never get in.
Liverpool only has 25,000 season tickets and only 7000 of those live in Liverpool.
Most tickets go to outsiders and tourists.

If youre talking about how more people FROM Liverpool deserve to be able to get/afford LFC tickets then i agree with you. I hope that this new stand would allow that to be a possibility. Im an American from New York and it's always been my dream to go to an Anfield game but obviously thats not easy since im in the US. Even then, i understand and support the desire for locals to be able to go to games.

we literally sing the whole ninety minutes, and much louder, Anfield is legendary, i loved it, and no disrespect, but any stadium in Argentina of any small club sounds louder, now River, Boca , Racing or Independiente that´s something else, you´ll be amazed, come hear it yourself. There is a lot of factors there really. First, the standing Kop went. That was what gave Anfield its reputation back in the day. Back then you could queue up on the day, get a cheap ticket and get straight into the Kop. If you were older or didn´t want to make noise you would sit in others parts of the stadium. The Kop was famous not just for its songs and colour, but also its humour, and the way the entire stand would sway in a way that seems incredibly dangerous today. Nowadays its all-seater stadiums, much harder to get tickets, much more expensive tickets (unaffordable for most to go regularly even if you could get tickets), much harder to sit with your friends, and an increasingly ageing fanbase, and an increasingly middle class fanbase too. To top it all off, you now have a lot of people visiting Anfield purely to "experience" the atmosphere - which obviously makes it even harder to get tickets for younger diehard fans. For these reasons there is whole generations of younger fans that have not developed a culture of frequently going the game, and it is young people who make the most noise. This is the flip-side of the commercialisation of the game - the quality of football is sometimes mind blowing, but many of these older aspects that made for an overall match day experience are lost. The club now uses the reputation of the "Famous Atmosphere" to sell the club to new fans - whilst simulataneously killing the atmosphere with that very same commercialisation. South America has managed to retain its more traditional match-going culture in a way we haven´t in England - although its for that exact same reason of commercialisation and money that South America´s best players now head to England (which I think is sad - the South American leagues used to be famous)
That is the first point. The second is that atmospheres in England (and Scotland) are just not the same as elsewhere, and they never have been. It is not like South America with the Barras Bravas or Europe with the Ultras - where there is a constant noise for 90 minutes. English fans have always reacted to the game in front of them. That means there is some games where the atmosphere is dead - even back in the old days of the standing Kop. However, it means when there is a high stakes games where the fans are really needed, they are able to react in a way that affects the game on the pitch, in a way that just isn´t present elsewhere. People really live the game on the pitch. When you have fans screaming for every tackle, every throw in, every decent pass, every bad refereeing decision, it can suddenly become incredibly difficult for the opposition and beneificial to the team. In those games, when the crowd is up, the adrenaline rush is like nothing I have experienced in South American or European footy. And it is those moments that leave opposition players disorientated in a way that constant singing won´t do. It is easier to learn to block out a constant background noise as a player. There may even be some quiet moments in those same games in England, but thats because the atmosphere is organic and not dictated by a drum or a megaphone or by some topless guy who isn´t even watching the game.
The Barras Bravas and Ultras are great for the less important games, against smaller opposition. They bring lots of noise, colour and flavour and thats great - especially if you are visiting as a casual fan as I have done in Germany and Chile. But for that exact same reason, they are less impactful in the really important moments of a game. I can find the constant Ultras drone off-putting in the big games, and I have been to games where the noise barely raises for a goal because the Ultras are already mid-song. I do think Argentinian fans have some of the best songs in the world. Would love to visit one of the Buenos Aires clubs. I love German football culture too - that is a League that has not sold out to the highest bidder like in England, and the game still feels more connected to its roots.

But basically, regarding Anfield and the Kop, many things have changed. Football has changed, society has changed, and the sport is flooded with too much moeny.
The Kop was famous when it was an old standing terrace. It used to fit 32,000 people at its peak. Nowadays, with all seater stadiums (which were introduced after numerous deadly disasters in the 1980s - cheif among them Hillsborough) the whole of Anfield is 54,000, with only 12,00 in the Kop. When it was a standing terrace, you would pay the equivalent of £5 to get in. Now you can easily be paying ten times that. When it was a standing terrace you would just queue up and buy your tickets on the day, even for the very biggest games, and if you didn´t have the money or a ticket or might your luck by hopping over the barriers. Nowadays there is a crazy online ticketing system where you are competing with hundreds of thousands of people around the world for a ticket - and you are very lucky to get hold of one.
Because it is seated, you often can´t sit with your friend, even if you can go regularly. The Kop is dominated by season ticket holders who started going to Anfield when it was the old standing Kop, and they have maintained that tradition to thih day (The Kop stopped being a standing terrace in 1994). However those people are now in their 50´s or older. In all the old days they would have moved off to the seating stands at the sides, allowing a new generation of young people into the Kop. Nowadays young people struggle to get tickets.
Finally, some people now just see Anfield as an excuse to make money. When there is someone who has come to Anfield as a once-in-a-lifetime trip to "experience the atmosphere" and they are willing to pay £300 for a £50 ticket - some people will sell them it. It is sad that this happens, but money talks.
For these reasons it is very hard to reclaim the Kop. Most of the time you can´t afford to get in the stadium, or can´t get tickets.
The owners of these clubs are just happy to chase the money, so they won´t do anything about it. I think the only way to start to rescue the atmosphere would be to make the whole of the Kop have tickets that you have to queue up for on the day, first come first serve, for no more then £20. Then you might start to see younger fans going with their mates and sitting or standing together, where they will make noise.
The finaly factor is society has changed. Football used to be a much more solidly working class sport. Nowadays, since it became monetised and unaffordable, much more of the match-going fanbase is dominated by middle class people who, generally, make less noise. Furthermore, people nowadays like to be glued to their mobile phones or trying to film the pitch for their instagrams.
Society also used to be more violent. Football had a much darker side with hooliganism. If you wanted to sing and make noise you went in the Kop. If you were a hard-core scally and wanted to fight the away fans, you would go in the Anfield Road End - and leave the stadium ten minutes before the end of the game to wait for the away fans outside. Thankfully those days are long gone. But they also added that frenzied and anything-goes edge to an atmosphere.
Nowadays, most of the local fans who used to go to the stadium, instead now watch the match in the pub with their friends, where there is quite frankly a better atmosphere a lot of the time!!!
Hope that explains the difference between now and then. Those days are never coming back, for better and worse. I do think there is measure we can take to improve the atmosphere - but with English football so money oriented the owners are unlikely to take those decisions. Sadly, for these reasons, the game that started in England has become overcommercialised, overstanised, and lost its core essence, even if the football is better.
I imagine in South america they have managed to retain their traditions and essence far better then in England.
All that said, we do still get some great atmospheres in England, even if they are less frequent then days gone by.

Atmosphere at Anfield is of course going to differ from a huge game against quality opposition to a 12pm early kick off where everyone is tired and hungover against your Burnley’s of the world. It’s normal. That’s where the myth comes from that the atmosphere is not what it is cracked up to be. Fans of lesser sides turning up wondering why the atmosphere isn’t electric with the fans in full voice the whole 90 mins like they’ve seen on the telly or heard about. For them it is the World Cup final, where as for Liverpool it is just a run of the mill game that in all honesty they are expecting to win comfortably. The fans will still get behind the team but they aren’t gonna be up for it the same as they are for a Champions League semi final against Barcelona - and you’d be deluded to expect or think otherwise

Its the way anfield responds to the game which makes it special. Imagine being a player and hearing the stadium cheering for each involvement you make its like rewarding the players with a high when they are doing good so that players always try to get the next cheer. Its like the stadium demands high performance. So the silence makes sense because its a reaction to the real game not an ambient sound.

The only people who say the Anfield atmosphere is overrated are probably the jealous Mancs who know that Old Trafford has an atmosphere like a graveyard. In truth, Anfield most of the time is a good atmosphere but the big games, especially the big European nights are nothing like anywhere else in football. The CL semi against Barca in 2019 was one of the most amazing atmospheres ever witnessed in football.
You made a good point about PL fans as we tend to be more reactive than Europeans. We can literally change a game with our voices and it has happened at Anfield so many times. When the Liverpool fans raise their game and get behind the team (with Klopp orchestrating) the power of the crowd can make opposition team shrink in size. Pep Guardiola summed it up perfectly in an interview when he said the Anfield crown can make you feel very small.

Anfield on big occasions is incredible. What I find with many Liverpool fans is there are many that are extremely nervous and that can affect the atmosphere to some degree but in terms of passion Liverpool are up there with any other fans.
It's fair to say that not every game has a great atmosphere but when Anfield is rocking there's nowhere like it. Celtic also have an amazing atmosphere on big occasions.
I'd say celtic park is better average as the smaller games are better than Anfields smaller games
@@samuelpinder1215 been to Parkhead on many occasions. Big European games and it was incredible but there's something very special about Anfield. Not just the noise but the joy amongst the people in the stadium is special. Complete strangers hugging each other withy joy. I've not witnessed that kind of passion anywhere else.

Enjoyed that video as I am a Liverpool fan abroad....regarding the fact that sometimes it goes quiet, it happens in all premiere league games. In Italy it's like Germany, behind the post with the Ultras it's always noisy. Forza Napoli & YNWA.

Anfield is setup for producing memories that last a lifetime, especially for fans who can only go there once or twice because of where they live. I encourage everyone who can, to see a match at Anfield because it is very special. I was lucky enough to have a friend with a season ticket seat in the Kop and I watched Liverpool play Southampton and stuff them 4-0. It wasn't close as a match and most of the Southampton players were afraid of possessing the ball for any length of time. The support from the Kop for the team was amazing.

This really doesn't do justice how loud it actually was when Salah scored. I was in the Kop though so it was probably far louder down there.

I’ve been to Anfield and it’s been like a library and other times the atmos has been immense!
I wouldn’t say it’s the best atmos in the world. Only having witnessed on tv, Celtic Park sounds electric, a lot of the German stadiums sound pretty awesome too.
Anfield can be amazing at times but far from the best!

People who say its over rated are mostly fans from little teams Liverpool dont respect. We wont create an atmosphere for Bournemouth at 12:00 on a Saturday,..... A lot of it is people watching everything in the game. We dont just cheer for the sake of it.

As a LFC supporter, I personally don't mind when someone calls Anfield a library because LFC supporters are intelligent, rational and logical when it comes to dissecting footballing discussions. Another point about those silent moments is that, those cheering, appreciating and gasping after a prolong period of silence transfers to the energy and concentration levels of our players on the pitch and let's them know how invested and impressed we are of their footballing prowess and work ethics. That's the Anfield mentality monsters.
I've been to Anfield 2 times in 2005, I think once we sat at the Kop end and once in the main stand (on the side). it was fantastic. on the same trip, we also went to the City of Manchester Stadium as it was called before 2008, now it's called Etihad.
