  • Low light photography is what's on the cards for the Pentax K3III Monochrome camera in this video! I had no expectations heading out but I was very excited to see how the sensor inside the K3III Monochrome would process images taken at varied iso. I can say it did pretty well!

    Some cool shooting in demanding circumstances. Bet you two had a blast, and Hannah, the "sometimes better photographer", took a chill portrait of her hubby that you will likely cherish. I know I would, given that I usually find myself behind a camera, and hence relatively few images taken with real cameras exist of yours truly.

      We did mate, I know right . . . I think Hannah has secretly been practicing without my knowledge haha! It is nice to have a photo of myself, as you say we are not very often the ones on the other side of the lens!

    No wonder Pentax are impressed with your channel and your work. To be honest I think those scenes you shot in black and white are outstanding. They would look nothing like as natural on the other Pentax colour censored mkiii in black and white mode. It’s also a great move that you shot in Time and Aperture Value mode. Yourself and these images are in a different class Mate.

      Your too kind 😊 but I appreciate it very much! I know one thing for certain, this camera is brilliant! I never expected to enjoy monochrome photography as much as I am, the detail, the rendering all of it is fantastic & something that I would say all photographers should try be it the K3III Mono or a converted camera. I didn't know what I was missing until I used this thing!

    Pausing at 2.26 lighted rods and 2.33 are amazing. 2.46 is great too.

      It's a beast! Incredible ISO performance & image quality. It sounds strange but when shooting wide open with the 16-50 f2.8 PLM a lot of the images have a medium format look to them, which I know sounds crazy with it being an apsc sensor.

    Wow man!!! Those shots are amazing!
    You might see yourself more of an action/sports photographer, but you def got the eye for the street stuff. Your b&w's are stunning! Many of those would make for some incredible framed photos for a home.
    I do think it helps to have to really turn your mind into b&w mode. Purely light and contrast. I'd def enjoy seeing you do more of this type of photo on your channel.
    It's really hard for me to say which one I like most, but the two that I would pick: @2:26 @2:55.

      Thanks mate really appreciate that! It was a nice change, especially not having to contend with mud/dust rain & rocks 🤣 I'm definitely going to try & get a few more street walks in before the new year. The image quality this camera produces is on another level to what I've shot with so far & that 16-50 PLM is the perfect partner for this type of photography I feel. 👌

      Thanks for the vid. I think the k3 iii mono is fantastic, it liberates you from the noise (literally in low light conditions) of colour. I throughly enjoy using mine. Excellent channel 👍

      Thanks @@LeeChandler 👍 I've been out with the K3iii mono a few more times & I'm just blown away by how good this camera is! Granted this is my first experience of shooting a Monochrome dedicated camera but I just can't get over how well it handles ISO & how good the tonal range is!

    I love Sigma 18-35/1.8 for low light cityscape shooting hand-held.. then it works well even with K3km1 usually around F1.8-2.2, 1/30-1/50s and ISO800-3200.
    Nice pics :)

      @@LeeIveson They are not that expensive now... the only sad part is, that the sister lens 50-100/1.8 does not exist in K mount.

    Now that’s impressive, I have to wonder though how it would compare to colour K3iii shooting in monochrome.

    The lack of Bayer Colour Matrix Array on top of the sensor, makes for increased sensitivity as the sensor is registering all the luminance that would be used to form the RGB data. So a monochrome sensor requires much less increase in the gain of the amplifiets in low light situations to achieve the same signal to noise ratio than a colour filter. This is whete the real use of the monochrome digital cameras are , in low light photography. Well demonstrated here, I should say.

    • @LeeIveson
      @LeeIveson  10 месяцев назад

      Thankyou for describing the tech side of things perfectly as to why this camera has such good low light capabilities! The tonal values also seem to have been expanded by a fair amount also, I'd imagine this is also linked to the exclusion of the colour filter?

    • @lensman5762
      @lensman5762 10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes they would. What is commonly termed as ' dynamic range ' is increased in a camera without the Bayer Matrix, mainly due to the increase in signal to noise ratio, and as a consequence smoother gradation of luminance values or tones. Noise is actually nothing but unwanted or bad signal, so the less of it the better. Donkeys years ago, when I started to do long exposure deep sky imaging, I had to forget all that I thought I knew about digital photography and start to learn properly from scratch. It was a very steep learning curve, but I persevered. Although what I learned equally applies to terrestrial photography, a lot of is done by the computers within the modern cameras, but it never hurts to to know a little more than the necessary. The way a digital camera builds the picture is a combination of the use of actual data generated by the sensor/ADC and the algorithms that are used to build the missing detail from the gaps between the photo sites on the sensor, and then to reassemble the data into something we would recognise as a photograph. The less software manipulation, the better all around. Good shooting.@@LeeIveson

    Is it better for low light than the k5iis?

    • @LeeIveson
      @LeeIveson  9 месяцев назад

      I would definitely think so, I've never used the K5iis so I can't give any feedback on that. But it's way better than my K5.
