Lyrically, it translates to two lovers, but I think Maynard is specifically singing about the band, how they almost broke up. They had a long break that mildewed their relationship. Even legal troubles. By the end of the song Maynard is shouting at them to stay together because they know that the pieces fit
They figure it out Later on the LP in the song Lateralus, each doing their own thing and spiraling out.

My friend, if you pay attention the lyric is not that difficult to understand, it just says that if you don't communicate in a relationship, you drift further and further apart until everything collapses. The only thing I really couldn't understand is what you're saying... Original instruments... Sex... What the hell are you talking about? Dude!! I told you before to give it up on trying to catch the beat!! (Yelling) this is NOT RAP!! TOOL is its own genre. They play to the sound of their own drum. I couldn’t get past 2 minutes of watching you. It’s irritating as hell and I guess it’s only fitting for me to say I’m out. You keep doing what you want to do, but I gotta unsubscribe. I agree. No need to try and do a technical breakdown of the beats and rhythms. The appeal of their music is the unpredictability of where the songs will go. You will only frustrate yourself trying to keep time. The frustration runs off onto your listeners. 🤘🌀
