How I made a feature film for $2,500

- Last year I had the first screening for my first feature film, Subject 36. This is the story of how I made it for virtually no money, and who I have to thank for helping it come into existence. Making a feature film for almost no money is very challenging, and every no-budget feature comes with it's own set of unexpected challenges. I hope you enjoy learning about my micro-budget journey.
Hi all! If you'd like to see the film, here's a link! It's available on Vimeo on Demand!

It was not a failure your experience has helped me
To me hearing what you did, you succeeded on every level. For a first time, you learned so much more what you’d learn at film school.
Keep it up!
Really informative mate! You do a great job and I'm happy to be a part of your next movie. Well done!
Thanks for the knowledge bro. I'm about to make my first feature and your experience is invaluable.
Congratulations on the film, man!!!! 6:58 was super relatable!!!
That's awesome man. I'm currently trying to make my own attempt at a feature with basically no money, and this video really motivated me. I'm in your shoes right now where I don't have a crew and have to do multiple positions myself. I really like how you talked about being introverted, and that made it difficult to put yourself out there and ask for free locations. That's something I'm currently struggling with as a introvert. Good luck, and I hope you have success in your future!
Im watching the trailer for this... I'm feeling Chris Nolan's "Following" vibes
Thanks haha... Following is definitely the better film
If this video is a true indicator of your personality -you seem to have a great temperament for being a Director.
This was amazing.
@13:22 is such a good looking shot.. my question for you is instead of using a boom operater , why didnt you lav up the actors ?
I didn't have any lavs or practical options for recording lav audio.
Great video, i can tell you learned a lot from making this film as well as myself watching it!
Loved this! Very helpful. A secondary video that would be helpful would be more specific. 'I shot this, but this would have been better'. 'I learned the value of feeding people, especially if you can't pay them'. 'I sweated THIS, but it turned out to be THAT that was the issue'. You learned, but more concrete examples would help us. Thank you for this.
Thanks! I'll look into whether I could do another video that goes into some of the specific lessons and challenges! Maybe you will see it on my channel some time!
Very inspiring!
Learning film making from India thanks for making this video.
You have good content regarding film making , again thank you.
hard worker and passionate, you deserved a better team/network of people imo
Absolutely fantastic video Alex. A very honest review of your own work. Congratulations on getting your first feature done and dusted. I'm going to go watch it. Looking forward to your next one. UPDATE: Awe man, this title is not available in my region (I live in Scotland). Got to see the trailer though.
Hi Terry. There are versions of Subject 36 on RUclips and Tubi, and my 2nd film, Good For Nothing Blues, is also on Tubi.
Well the movie looks amazing. Hope to see it soon
I hope your movies on your page I'll check it out!
good work dude - keep focussing on making more work. the mroe you make, the more unique you become, since there are less competitors at the top ;)
Thanks for the support man!
Great work! Thankyou for the info, really helpful. Going to check out your film ~
Yes, spending the money on making the film vs. going to film schools was probably a good idea!
I think that depends on whether or not you've already had a bit of experience and if you own your own gear or not. Bare with me, I'll explain. Go to film school with some experience, confidence and a ready to shoot script. Use their gear, their studio, their edit suites. Use the students as your crew and the tutors for guidance when you need to. This is the David Lynch / John Carpenter route. Rather than the opposite way, of just spending the fees making a feature like Christopher Nolan / Robert Rodriguez / Sam Raimi, etc. Neither way is wrong.
Love the glimpse into making your film, are you planning to make more no budget movies?
Inspiring! Well done for taking the initiative.
The Fairscreen team :)
I shot mine- The Last Great Ecowarrior for under 500 or around there. I managed this with a three person cast and intentionally going with an eco-terrorist story line because where do they live---the forest. There was absolutely no sets involved. Additionally, being a musician myself I used my contacts for a great soundtrack of both professional Russian and American bands. Given excellent editing programs like Vegas or Adobe I was able to shoot with just a Canon G20 with the audio on Reaper and with a little color grading and contrast adjustments it looks great.
Thank you. I needed this video
Very nice brother 👌
Keep it up. Wish u all the best for next project.
Good luck!
Most of the parks I have used as long as I ring the council and ask them no permits needed
very helpful video, thank you!
Really enjoyed the video, I keep coming back to it from time to time. I made a feature film in 2018, pretty much the exact time you released this video. I put it up on my channel along with the making of video if anyone's interested. I look forward to more videos from you!
I disagree with getting people to help for free. The reason is just about everyone will say yes to helping make a film but when it comes right down to it they don't show up or they do a poor job because they're not being paid.
Great job!
Bro you talk like you got stuck in a Wes Anderson movie. Anyway keep going, love from India
How can i make 3d movie?
Cool.
Great video I watched every second. Very informative and I just made my first short film myself as I pursued my directing and acting career. I just uploaded it and any feedback would be highly appreciated! 🙏🏽 Subbed.
Thanks! I will check out your film out later today!
DysnomiaFilms thank you so much man I’m very excited to hear that! Also very appreciated. It’s night here in US so I’ll be looking to see what you have to say, thanks again bro 🙏🏽🎥 keep it up
Why are you wearing a coat indoors?
I was cold?
was all production non-union?
I was about to ask the same!
On $2500... yeah haha
@@DysnomiaFilms I cant release here if its not from union😂
@@madhanvasudevan7574 Hm strange rule, no such thing in my country. It would be impossible to make a feature for this price at union standards.
I like the story but I feel you're just reading from a script behind the camera. There is no enthusiasm or mood your conveying in your tone. That's something I feel could significantly improve your videos
Yeah I struggle with performance. Do you feel my last few videos show improvement?
