Eastern Promises (2007) - Nikolai's Promotion to "Boss" Status a.k.a "Getting Stars"

- After introducing History of Violence (2005) , I thought that we should have a look at another
excellent "mafia" movie made by David Cronenberg featuring Viggo Mortensen.
In this movie Aragorn joins the dark side - had to made that joke; but not really, as he's actually undercover cop in the Russian mob.
This is by far my favorite part of the movie, where he finally get's his stars being promoted to
"boss" status. I can't help but to point out again how well "fitted" I find this role of mafia mob I find for Viggo. Shame we didn't see him doing those more. Only De Niro is maybe a "better" face for a mafia role.
There is not much action in the movie, but similarly to the previous History of Violence (2005), when there is, it's worth it and "realistic" with a lot of shock factor. But it's not even needed. The story and dialogues are interesting enough to keep you involved.
I can highly recommend!

I love how this whole thing happened so the dad could make him an convenient scapegoat, but instead allowed him to take over his gang.
I want that bastard dead in the movie, but sadly it didn't happened. That bastard, rapist evil person should have died a cruel death in the hands of the chechens just to make the viewers happy you now.
It's a shame Viggo never played a Bond villain opposite Craig. I think he would have stood toe to toe with Waltz or Bardem. Certainly would have made a better opponent than Malek
He could play godfather.
There's still time
He's such an underrated actor. He's probably set for life, but I'd love to see him in more quality stuff.
Stars don’t mean boss, it’s the Russian equivalent of a made man, what most Americans would consider a Soldier or even a Capo in La Cosa Nostra. When the dad is out of the picture, his son becomes boss, and since he considers Nikolai like a brother, they move up together. Hope this explains things a bit better
Thx for that, I was under impression he became a "boss" with the right for his own crew.
He will be considered more as a made guy, that a capo
I am from Russia. anyone interested can explain what it means what is in the video. You are all a little wrong
@@Aaaaaaaaa35791 Please do :)
@@Aaaaaaaaa35791 please explain this is my favorite movie.
I love how even the mobsters look at the one that mentioned his mother....they were like , "ok ok..thats good enough"
Viggo is amazing, but the guy who played Kirill is overlooked IMO. He fits into this role so perfectly. The dude is an amazing actor. Reading the comments, someone said Viggo speaks 7 languages. That is epic! Isn't more than four considered a polyglot?
Vincent Cassel is OK, but I kinda never liked him. Lacks charisma imho.
Or maybe I'm just mad he was banging Monica Bellucci in her prime.
Probably both :D
@@pibmovieclips 🤣 Right on! This is such a great movie though. Thanks for providing these clips bro!
@@1988banker Just sharing my passion mate, glad you enjoyed the clip!
Nothing to do with real russians, this acting is a joke lol

By the way a Russian with Tattoos of stars on his knees means he’ll never bow to anyone.
It’s funny cuz In the show the wire a guy with stars on his knees and shoulders gets tortured and is super pussy.

omg that’s too much 🤣 💀 💀
Not only was he a useful scapegoat, but in the same move ole boss man eliminated who would become his greatest competition. As the lion kills the young new challenger.
It was a solid plan on their part. But, Aragorn didn't take it kindly.
Salute to Vincent Cassel. You got a French actor who can Barely speak English, talking in Russian.
Yo Shah of Iran, you trolling or what, Vince is proficient in English.
His russian language actually good
@@chuckmcgill6673 yeah he is. I just watched him in a movie called Dobermann. And hr was talking English on the special features.
How many years did you do in the can ? You never talk about it.
Phil, don't listen to these guys. They're always trying to provoke a reaction. And you keep indulging them.
As a native russian speaker i can say that they are speaking not bad (some words i cant understand because they has american accent), but, Valery on 4:18 speaks ABSOLUTELY clearly like a native speaker

Damn on the kneecap that shit gotta hurt

Such a great movie. It's a shame they never made a sequel set in Russia.
I don't think it needed one tbh
I've read from an article that Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, is working on a sequel. Don't know if they've actually begun production tho.
russophobia would have messed up the sequel
@@liamlafferty3144 Agree
It had no fucking ending! What do you mean it doesn’t need a sequel! They just threw out “oh he’s a FSB agent” at the end and then did zero with it

3:54 whenever armin muller-stahl appears it must be a good movie
The dude with the poofy moustache kills me.
I’m assuming he’s supposed to be a Cossack
What is he holding in his hand 6:52?
Since I saw the film when it was released, I have always wondered, I have looked for it in an infinity of pages and forums of all kinds, and it is today that I still do not know what it is.
I could be wrong, but I believe it is a rosary chain of sorts.
This is a rosary. They are made in prison. They give each other as a keepsake. Criminal symbols are applied to them.
For a long time, there are people in prisons who are engaged in the manufacture of such souvenirs. The prison police are trying to ban this. They are taken away during searches.
@@user-jd2rw1vc2c Very interesting, thanks.

They could read his resume from his tattoos
That's what tattoos were originally for - marking of belonging to a group and status.
Thus, for "trash" people and "gangsta wannabees".
Today, even police dudes have the need to get tattoos and is accepted in society.
Times have changed, but tattoos still spell trouble.
Vincent Cassel is truly french
the truth is that no one forces a vlor to get a tattoo, it’s his choice, but as a rule he gets a tattoo
I never understood the ending, it says he assumes the boss position in the mob, but how can that happen considering he's an undercover fsi agent
You work exactly the same as before - as an inside informer. Boss position just meant he could have his own crew and turf, but there were many more who he could provide inside information on.
his loyalty is to his people first and the feds second, he was an informant because he wanted the feds' help in becoming boss so that he could reform the organization
@@GlitzPixie He wasn't an informant he was undercover.
He said that more as he’s working that way. His “friend” Kirill is the new boss and he is Kirills closest friend now. He essentially has no the the ear of the king and all the information the king has, yet doesn’t have to deal with the lightning rod aspect of being the king.
It's FSB

I thought it was to frame him, not so much as making him a vor
It was to frame him, he was then supposed to die as vor (instead of the son of the boss who made the proposal).

I've seen some post on the Internet saying there's gonna be a sequence. I ain't sure, though. It could be fake.

It’s pretty bad tbh. You can tell they’re trying their hardest but i have to resort to subtitles in some cases, and Russian is my first language.

Agreed.

Just?
In 5:14 he says about his mother as she were whore. Its ridicolous and unreal in russian criminal. For this words he could stood up and stab him until he dies. Mother is untouchable person and most respectable in prison
That was the point, it was test of loyalty and respect. He had to respect them and be even more loyal to them and to the code, than to own family.
Any other circumstances, it wouldn't and well.
@@pibmovieclips no its not correct, family cant be insulted in any reason. Especially Mother. If you do this in any cis country including Russia ,you are death man or become lowest cast , better if just apologize and pay some to be safe
Why they speak in English?
Do they? I had to left subtitles on just so that the Russian spoken part is fully understood. If you refer to why speak English at all? Well, the story happens in the UK.
Why can't they tattooed him in a proper tattoo parlor instead of a poorly lit room, uncomfortably situationed on the couch, done by a elderly well-dressed man who may or may not be a tattoo artist 😂
Because either they've already paid the elderly man (who more than likely has done this more times than he can count) or he's doing it for free. That man is one of them, and only someone like him is allowed to put those tattoos on him.
Idk if it's cause i'm french myself but i clearly hear that he's doing a russian accent while having a french one under it, really ruined his acting in this movie for me..
I didn't notice anything, but I'm not french.
Thats funny it reminds me of English speaking actors portraying Eastern Europeans and talking in a fake Eastern accent.
I'm a Russian and I'll be honest. In this film, the most inconspicuous accent is among those trying to speak Russian. In other Hollywood films I've seen "Russians" speak Russian with a terrible accent. Vigo Mortensen and Kassel improved phonetics a lot

I don't remember the movie being based on real event or people. This is a fiction, right?
Thus, for dramatic purposes it makes sense. I enjoyed this scene a lot personally.
@@pibmovieclipsaw ye, it looks cool like a movie, but for a person who understands the topic it’s funny)
@@AleksandrKoshakoffGS this is where I tend to separate fiction from non-fiction, or something that is supposed to be a historical movie (so it should be portrayed accurately).
Because that is infinitely annoying if it's all bollocks (like the shit produced by modern woke Disney)
But if it a fiction, it might as well be another marvel movie with superhumans and multiple universes, doesn't move me one bit since it is a fiction. It can be nonsensical. I enjoyed it for what it is - artistic interpretation - ART.

Hollywood should make more russian mafia movies.Instead of making them villains
I really want a good series about 90th in Russia. It would be like mix of Narcos, Sopranos and Game of Thrones. There was all - gang wars, betrayals, conspiracy, love etc. it was really crazy time - the news every day consisted of shootings and murders of crime gangs.
