So glad these free options have come out. Recently ordered a P01... to put on a bike engine believe it or not. Hope one of these works to read mine; going to see if I can help figure out what was done to use a P01 with the 58x trigger wheel. If it came from a V8, it wouldn't really matter, but it was a V6. Great video, I wish you had this video up when I started, Keep it up!. You forgot to mention the OBDXplorer, I use it as a alternative to Torque. To read your codes and for diagnostics.
Question about your pin out for a bench harness. my wiring diagram does not have a ground where you show. Also, you do not use all of the powers and all of the grounds why?
The wires shown are the only wires needed for the bench harness. Other grounds, power wires and such are not needed for strictly reading/writing to the pcm.
Good evening. Can you explain to me how to save a changed VIN because every time it says Updated Successfully I hit OK , but when I go back to read properties the VIN hasn’t changed. I’ve been at this all day. I need help! Thank you so much. YourBoyEric from Southern Cali.
Trying to remember the sequence from memory. Have the key and constant power both on and ls droid recognize the pcm. Type in the new VIN to the change vin box, click update. It should then flash, key power off, count down, then key cycle on, updat pcm info. LS droid should kind of be step by step with a new screen telling you to key off and on at specific times. Hope this helped. I just did my obs ls pcm and it changed it no issues 🤔 weird yours won't take.
You know I haven't tried. I believe you can, and I plan on swapping out to electrical at some point on my C10. (As in, I've had the fans sitting in the corner for a year 🤦♂️)
I do not believe so. I think it's p01 p10 p59 (ls based) as well as the p12 4.2L motors. I remember reading a thread where you could rework a harness to accept a ls pcm on 96+ gm motors. But I don't have any details on how that's done. Good luck and thanks for checking out the channel.
@@macsboneyardbuildsthe GM vans used the old vortec L31, till 2002 or 2003, also some commercial chassis used L31 later too but they all used the newer LS ECU... It is highly recommended not to do it in the car. If the voltage drops mid write, it will brick the pcm. The bench harness is really easy to make, and you can either buy new or go to the junkyard and get the couple connectors you would need.
Great video very informative. I was about to buy a OBD link lx. But after watching your video I did a little more digging and I changed my mind I’m going to buy a obdx pro. Have you do any tuning with it?
Thank you, I appreciate it. I have written new operating systems, segment swapped, vats delete, and cloned successfully. I have not had the time to dabble with it too much, but all of the programs and the OBDX VT have worked flawlessly so far with no errors or bricked PCMs.
Hey there, thanks for doing this video. I couldn't get the bluetooth device you recommended as they are not currently in stock. So, I got the OBDLINK LX instead thinking it would work. I tried using Universal Patcher to write to an ecm I just got. I was able to read the entire ECM, and to also do a test write....but when I went to do a real full write...it failed. Do you think this is related to the OBDLINK or perhaps the cheap chinese 12v power adapter that is powering my setup?......or both? Thanks for the advice.
I would try to get a better 12v source first. Either a good bench supply like i used or even the battery out of one of your cars. If the aource doesnt have enough amps it will fail to write. If that doesn't work, then look into OBDX when back in stock. I've heard the latest obdlink software did not play nice with lsdroid, universal, etc. Keep after it, you'll get it!

You are correct. The operating systems need to match. The website gearhead efi has a large amount of bin files gathered from users. You have to sign up, and it takes a couple days, usually for them to approve you. Also, the ls droid website and FB page have a lot of bin files. If you are having too much difficulty finding one, you may have to find two matching operating systems with the motor/trans combo you need. Then you can segment swap them in ls droid, make the bin you need, and then delete vats, etc from the new file. Hope that made sense 🙏
Yep, there are different types of OBDX; Pro, VT, VX, they do the same thing, just have different features. VX, I believe, is usb only, so you won't be able to connect via Bluetooth on your android phone.

Yeah it's kind of a trial and error learning system for guys who aren't skilled programmers. I am one of those guys, haha. I always suggest having a couple junkyard backup pcms to work with initially in case you mess something up until you get the hang of it.
There are hundreds of bluetooth tongles and usb to obd cables out there. The big thing is it has to VPW compliant which these pcm communicate by. Also, the programs are always being updated. LS Droid has done several upgrades since this video, along with their OBDx line of dongles. My advice would be to buy the current obdx dongle from their site. I'm not affiliated with them at all, but they are known to work using these programs. Unlike a ton of others out there, they may or may not work. You will be money ahead and headache free going with what works.
Can you tune in the car, yes. Would I, no. If the voltage drops during a write process, it can brick the pcm with a sudden shutdown. I haven't done it, but maybe put a battery charger on the car or something to make sure your volts stay up. Also, I'd refine your tuning skills on a spare pcm. You don't wanna botch a tune on your only one.
