    Funny video, even though I Ten-KA-Ra fish alongside fly fishing, it cracks me up when you show your Tenkara love. I just got back from a week long fishing trip and caught equal numbers on both rods... I typically use about 20' of shooting line with about 5' of tippet with my dry flies for my lake fishing Tenkara... casting that is very similar to my fly fishing rod... so I guess I'm not a purist Tenkara dude, but the minimalist gear set up and take along for those spur of the moment stops to fish makes it easy. You won't see me with big rod tubes on my Subie for those cane poles. And I can take along my gear on trips with the boss without angering her with all my fussy gear and rods, so for me, the ol' cane pole has some merit. Love all your videos, I've gained quite a few tips from you and I appreciate them all. Cheers and Beers

      I bought a switch rod this year, really suck at casting that thing. I either need to commit to practicing with it or sell the damn thing, which is more likely than getting more practice time casting it

    • @leewiren8404
      @leewiren8404 4 года назад

      My Life Is Dog Hair I felt it was worth the try, but normally I’m just happy catching basic lake fish that my basic 6wt can easily handle. My switch is a 7-8wt but I doubt I’ll really have the need for it. It’s the debate in my head to keep it for that rare trip or just dump it to minimize gear. I truly don’t have the time to be planning on using it more than rarely and probably shouldn’t have made the expenditure, case of G.A.S. I guess.

    It sounds like Tenkara and fly fishing are like kayaks and canoes where the paddle type determines which boat you're in. Does this mean that I can stab a big fat night crawler on the hook and as long as I'm using a fly fishing type reel I can still wear my Orvis waders and claim to be fly fishing? 😂 Thanks for the video Ben! Really love all your videos, except ones in which you dis Tenkara. You have it all wrong! It is an awesome addition to my fly fishing arsenal. I have had days on streams when my Tenkara rod out fished my fly rod. It gives you exceptionally light presentations and great ability to drop flies into little pockets and keep them there far beyond what a traditional fly set up will do. And it is a pile a fun. It is most definitely fly fishing, as most fish it with flies, and not shiners! Admit it, you really love Tenkara!!!

    • @mountain-milk
      @mountain-milk 4 года назад +5

      Agreed but you can’t reason with these line strippers. They are too simple minded to understand that you cast a tenkara rod. I have a 30ft range with mine which is as far as I usually cast with my fly rod anyways.

      jeff goldberg I used to “fly fish” lakes with a clear bobber and spinning outfit. Was in some park many years ago and they had stocked Atlantic salmon in a small lake. Regs said only traditional fly fishing equipment was allowed. Lake was full of “fly” fishermen in float tubes stripping lines or kicking backwards in their tubes while they dragged their imitations behind them. It looked a lot like trolling to me. As a backpacker who is trying to limit gear and weight, I can see the advantages of using a Tenkara setup to fish small Sierra streams.

    Agree, and really dig your fishing fun times. When I was a kid cane pole fishing was with a .99 cent varnished cane pole (we could get one with 10 coke bottles). The poles you guys were using were "Crappie Rods" and cost about 10 bucks down at the K-Mart. As I got older dad bought a boat. It was a used canoe that we carried on top of the Dodge Dart. That was when we became snobs and shelled out for the Crappie Rods.

    I understand the sarcasm but saying tenkara rods are cane pole rods is like saying fly rods are the same as spinning rods cos they both have reels. If you use a bobber on a tenkara rod yes it's like a short cane pole but when it's fished with out one and cast, tenkara is its own thing. Try using a 13 ft rod with 15-20 ft of line plus leader and just a fly. Its in its own class of fishing.

    Uses weighted line, tipit and a dry fly but it's not fly fishing 😉 just like when I use a Joe's fly I'm not spinner fishing.

    There are times you go from the silly to the sublime. This video would fall into the latter category.

    It’s the tenkara pole challenge , we wanna see how big of a fish ( saltwater ) you can catch and land on a tenkara ( cane pole 👈🏼) without breaking it , why you ask ! Because your a huge fisherman ! Oh and you have to use a fly ! 👈🏼😳. That day with mom and the boys was HUGE !

    This video was your greatest production yet. Let the elitist tenkara snobs cry like the weenies they are! Tenkara is and will always be a cane pole!

    Dangle: 1.) hang or swing loosely 2.) offer (an enticing incentive) to someone. When “cane pole fishing”, you don’t cast, you dangle it 😆.

      Huge Fly Fisherman well you do, apparently. Put that bait fish rig on a fly rod and it's fly fishing? No of course not. Tenkara is don with a fly on the end of the line. Just like modern fly fishing. And catch a big fish on tenkara, that's not for kids and grandmas.

      @@Thomas73Christensen it's just funny though. I mean, as if the history of fly fishing began with a 4 piece tip over ferrule carbon rod and large arbor cast aluminum reel with sealed drags and reversible retrieve.
      He took his wife and kids fishing and made a funny video about Tenkara. From someone that does fish Tenkara style pretty often, it's actually funny.
      You ain't wrong though.

    500 hundred years ago western fly fishing poles didn't use a reel. They were basicly loooong poles with a line tied to its tip. What makes The total difference to tenkra is the use com of fly instead of bai, not the absence of a reel.
