I'm a Browns fan, and I hate the Watson trade. Beyond needlessly abandoning the QB that helped the team rebuild from the 1-31 abyss, we gave up too much, gave a sexual predator an unprecedented contract and made him the face of the franchise
Jimmy Haslam is an awful owner who actively undermines the franchise on a regular basis.
Lastly, this giant deal automatically raises expectations for the team. Watson will not lead the Browns to a SB. We would be lucky to win the division during his contract.

Another factor that worked for the Texans: by trading Watson, they effectively commited to a rebuild, which caused them to have the 2nd worst position in the 2023 draft, which put them in position to draft CJ Stroud. Even if the Texans had gotten nothing back in the trade, it would have worked out just because of Stroud. Albeit, their fans had to endure a terrible 2022 season to get there.

    • @HoraceAlt775

Very true, the Lions also got too tank because of there trade as well. The lions didn't get a franchise QB initially, but by tanking they were able to draft Aidan Hutchinson who just reached a 100 QB pressures in a single season in just his 2nd yr. Don’t forget with Watson during his “good” years he has the blown 24-0 lead in a playoff game followed by a 4-12 record in the 4800yd 33/7 TD/INT season.
Also without giving the Steelers 14pts in a pick 6 and fumble 6 they could be 10-4 and have a better shot at the division and possibly #1 seed in the AFC. Those 14pts are also more than the Steelers have scored in 6 of their 14 games and 26 total in that game are the highest they have scored all season.

Yes because Watson plays defense. And he went 4-12 because he had no weapons to throw to bro. Stop hating he was a top 3 QB

@@o_o1374 4800yd and 33 TD would argue otherwise… yes Brandin Cooks was no D-Hop, but he was still a solid 1000yd receiver.
Also being out scored 51-7 from that point on meant he didn’t play offense either.

The biggest bone I have to pick with the Watson trade is not the asset management, but the ludicrous FULLY GUARANTEED contract that the Browns gave since they were so desperate for a QB under center after the team ruined Baker Mayfield. Look, I am not saying Mayfield would have been a "set the world on fire" QB, nor would his attitude problems go away overnight, but you look at his stint with the Rams and Buccaneers, and Mayfield is doing pretty OK for himself.
Back to Watson, the contract he got was what poisoned the QB well for a time, cause you already have a precedence with Rick Spielman drafting that fully guaranteed contract for Kirk Cousins, and now the Browns chose to double down by doing the same thing with Watson. The precedence this caused nearly torpedoed the QB market, cause you have to remember that guys like Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, and especially Lamar Jackson were looking for their "big boy" deals, and Jackson's camp was specifically using Watson's deal as leverage. If not for the Eagles righting this ship with the more reasonable deal for Jalen Hurts, there may be a case against the Browns for tampering. It's one thing to be incompetent by yourself, but it's another when your incompetence drags others down with you, and this is why I say the Watson deal is a lot worse than the assets given up to the Texans.

Imo the narrative around the Diggs trade is confusing. The Bills fleeced the Vikes. The trade was, on its own, pretty much the same exact trade as AJ Brown to the Eagles. The Vikes hit on their pick, the Titans didn’t. That doesn’t reflect on how smart the trade was tho. They traded for a underwhelming assets, and struck gold turning those assets into a top 3 receiver. The trade itself wouldn’t have been worse for MIN if they took Reagor. Their drafting would have been worse, but the trade is still the same

Missed the real nightmare for the Browns on the Watson trade which makes the grade an F-.
They were already going to be hard pressed to keep their star players and sign more of their own quality players when their rookie contracts came to an end. The Watson trade and the massive paycheck they gave him means that the Browns window is going to close very fast as their last few pre Watson drafts have to either be resigned or lost to free agency. The trade put them in a vice that is getting tighter every year..

You can't really judge the Watson trade yet. Thats like saying Lions lost Stafford trade after he won with rams. So much more had to play out. Lions just won division with all they got in exchange for Stafford! Texans have done good with picks from Browns, but Cleveland isnt really hurting from this trade... Although they may in time. As a browns fan i definitely didn't want it, but I can't deny it isnt hurting the team that much. Andrew Berry is pulling NFL starters deep in the draft. MJ Emerson and Dawand Jones are top tier players and that's just to name a few.

We wouldn't have a lot of the good players on our team if we still had him. Sure you can say we are struggling at reciever but that's because every reciever we have fell to worst case scenario on how bad they could be and you can't predict that. If we get an above average reciever next year we will be fine and still have a top 5 defense because we don't have tyreek.

Had they traded one first rounder and gave Watson a 2 year deal this would be easier to swallow. But this trade was so egregious, so dumb, and went as poorly as everyone predicted. I can't even root for the Browns anymore. Just so so God damn dumb.
The only way that trade won't go down as the stupidest trade of all time is if Watson throws for 5k yards the next 4+ seasons and wins two superbowls.

To say the Watson trade was an "F" is just lazy. If you adjusted stats and win/loss reason to that of Lamar Jackson, they are extraordinarily comparable. Back when the Browns beat the Ravens this year, everyone was talking about how unbelievable the Browns look with Deshaun at the helm. Everyone said Deshaun is back! Then the news came out. Everyone said they were done. Now that Joe Flacco has righted the ship, everyone likes to pile on Deshaun again like he wasn't good this year. He was very good. And he'll be very good for a while. He's still very young. Relax
