    420 knobs on both tires combined......high-roller, indeed
    ...............maxxis, coulda called it the Shorty-ass
    This is the tire DAK was always referring to as 'the intermediate' in all his previous interviews. It's a true intermediate tire.
    I guess my biggest quandry for ditching my Assegai front for one of these, is that I'm a trail rider, not a DH racer - my trails are in Michigan, so it's more sandy, gritty, dusty, sometimes wet twisty trails, w/ glacial low hills with lots of small ups and downs. I love how the Assegai saves me constantly from questionable lines with even more questionable traction - why would I ditch that emergency-exit grip of the Assegai for something that probably rolls better, but won't grip as tenaciously? I'd still be curious to try one up front to see for myself, but when they offer lighter casings (don't need tough casings for michigan)

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 2 месяца назад +2

      The new High Roller 3 is slower rolling than the Assegai. It's most comparable to the Conti Argotal. Most riders currently using Assegais will probably be best just staying on the Assegai (or switching to the Kryptotal), save for maybe those riding in winter in the PNW or UK or just riding steep, loose terrain all the time. Also if you like the grip of the Assegai but wished it had better feedback and a little more predictability I'd suggest the Kryptotal.

  • @Pienimusta
    @Pienimusta 2 месяца назад +3

    Absolutely love Assegai for dry, mostly sandy and hardpack conditions. Works also really well on trail bikes with faster rear tyre.
    Is the High Roller slower rolling when pedalling? Seems more downhill and lift oriented.
    Where does the DHF nowadays sit in the pack?

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  2 месяца назад +6

      I think the rolling speed of the Assegai and the High Roller are super comparable! They're both relatively slow rolling tires when looking at all the options out there, and the DHR II is going to roll a bit faster than the High Roller and the Assegai. Definitely don't use the High Roller if you're lining up for an XC race, but for downhill or enduro, front end grip is obviously the priority over rolling speed.
      The DHF is definitely in a weird spot now, it's not going to be the tire that we recommend to anyone looking for maximum performance, but still comes stock on tons of bikes. It still comes with great rubber and offers a bit less rolling resistance than other options, but isn't going to offer quite as much all out grip as the Assegai or the High Roller.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 2 месяца назад +1

      The Assegai is the tire you run when you aren't sure what will work best, it's the "jack of all trades, master of most" in the gravity tire world. The only comparable tire is the Conti Krpytotal, which Conti flat out markets as a mixed conditions tire. And up until the HR3 the vast majority of World Cup DH and Enduro bikes had Assegais or Kryptotals up front.

    Shortys are great where I live for wet and dry conditions. The only reason I only switch to them for the wet is wear. They wear more than twice as fast as an Assegai and for a non-sponsored rider and Maxxis MaxxGrip DD/ DH tires north of $100 it's definitely a factor. These High Roller IIIs look like they will wear similar to the Shortys.

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  2 месяца назад +1

      With fewer knobs, they're definitely going to wear faster than an Assegai, and considering they were developed as a race specific tire, that isn't a huge surprise! If you're looking for a longer lasting tire, the Assegai is definitely going to be a better option.

    Spent a lot of time on Bontrager SE4/5, Maxxis DHR2, Assegai. Looks to me like their taking input from Conti owners and Bontragers which had better rolling and more consistet transition performance.
    Currently on Conti Kryp/Xno in Enduro casings. IMHO this combo is better everywhere than the Maxxis Assegai/DR2. Rolling is a bit better but overall consistency of performance especially front is improved. Enduro casing as others have said is more like DD, definetly beefir than EXO+ and more supportive.

    3 years of pushing around the DHF/DHR. I'm tired of the slow rolling nature of those tires. So what's the recommendation now for replacing the DHF/DHR for SoCal Park and San Diego terrain? • @mrvwbug4423

      Conti Krpytotals IMHO. The front rides similar to the Assegai, but rolls a little faster, and has better feedback and the rear blows the DHR2 away, rolls faster, slightly better grip, WAY more predictable than the DHR2. Eveyone talking about Conti, are you guys using them?
    Argotal/Kryptotal Soft Enduro is not as grippy as MaxxGrip Assegai in Exo+ or DD. Period. This isn’t even an accurate comparison. I have bikes running both. I’ve back to backed them. High roller 3 in MaxxGrip DD and later in Exo + is gonna stomp out a Conti in Soft compound, all day every day, teeth on the curb. High roller in DD is already a SKU in the system. Exo + due in fall according to Maxxis. Conti Super soft Enduro still a speculation and if they don’t fix mould alignment still gonna be same quality as Maxxis/Schwalbe.
    Conti from China, the moulds aren’t even aligned properly. Sipes in the center tread are 1-2mm off. Is that a step above Maxxis? No. They both have these kinds of problems.
    And try and mount a Conti?! Maxxis with no levers is a little tight but no problem by hand, Conti you are gonna be sweating to get it done with 2 levers, maybe even metal ones. Want to change them to test some? You will be redoing your rim tape every time.
    Do you guys just come in here to cheer on your current choice?

      Conti Super Soft is equivalent to MaxGrip, Conti Soft is equivalent to MaxTerra. DH casing Contis are made in Germany, the enduros are either made in germany or china (look for the square box for german made), and the trail casing is 100% china. I run a set of DH casing Krpytotals (Super Soft front, Soft rear) and they're the best tires I've ever ridden. They really are a pain to mount though haha. Comparing Maxxis MaxGrip to Conti Soft is not a direct comparison the direct comparison would be Conti super soft.

    Shorty is about 100 gramms lighter than the HR3, where is the innovation? The Shorty works also in all kind of conditions. And when EXO casing and MaxxTerra is enough for you, you will save even 300 gramms! And MaxxTerra is better for low temperatures where the MaxxGrip turn from super grip to hard rubber slider.

    So maxxis introduced the assegai because its supposed to be the best all round front tire with its 'transition knobs' to replace the minon dhf with its 'quote unquote' float zone that people didnt like apparently. Now the new high roller is the new all round best front tire to replace the assegai because its now new grippy side knobs and clearly has a float zone. Maxxis marketing at its best. So basically re-releasing new minion.

    • @trentvlak
      @trentvlak 2 месяца назад

      As a front tire, Assegai always had a major flaw, that huge center knob that did nothing. Since the tire flattens against the ground, there's no point in having centerline knobs. Centerline knobs just get in the way of the side knobs biting. This new design has no centerline knobs.

      Maybe watch the video again? The Assegai is a great tire for lots of riders in a range of conditions, and it’s not going anywhere. The High Roller excels in loose conditions-either wet or dry-where the Assegai can struggle because of its dense tread pattern.

      @@trentvlak Aggree with you, the floating zone is that initial feeling that you get from centre knobs to locking into the side knobs, it always had a positive feel for me kind of like a ski and the minions has that. But id say most people jumped onto the assegai from minons because of the marketing being the best all round front tire and transition knob aggressive design, greg minaar help develop etc. Also the HR3 seemed like it was in testing phase for quite sometime with pros so id say after all the assegai hype maybe pros realised it wasn't as good as minions. who knows

      @@doublea404 I'm comparing to previous videos in the past about the assegai, but when you buy the assegai the marketing litterally says for loose and loose of hard terrain, wet etc. When it was released it had massive hype and most people went from minions to the assegai. Now If you compare the HR3 to minions especially the side knobs the almost look the same, also they both have more open tread designs compared to assegai. Albeit the HR3 has higher knobs. To me I think maxxis basically needed a new open design tire similar to minion in terms of characterists under the HR3 name. Anyways im sure people will just buy whatever is new.
