I actually imagine this as an actual episode. Where they got a cursed VHS of a dark fantasy movie, but when it was put in everything and everyone in the city (including them) got transformed into characters and locations from a dark 80s fantasy movie, with only the duo not being completly affected.

I mean the fact that the creators of the show constantly reference 80s pop culture and media this wouldn't be much of a surprise if it were real. Plus it kind of fits with the wild themes of the show.
