Trying out the new TDS GTNXi Pro Upgrade in a test flight from Farnborough to Cardiff in the wonderful A2A Simulations Accu-sim Piper Comanche 250. We've all been waiting for the TDS to have the ability to import Navigraph data and here it is!
We also take a look at the upcoming AuthentiKit Comanche control modules.
This video isn't a tutorial. I am still a rookie when it comes to these kind of complex IFR flights but I see this sort of thing as a chance to train and mistakes are made.

Great vid, thanks! Love the Squadron Dog no 2 ("Yet To Be Named")
Many thanks! Great isn’t he!
love your videos, looove the A2A Comanche! l admit l am glad even you can have a not-so-perfect lnding sometimes 😅
whenever l feel like “l got this” the Comanche reminds me it isn’t obvious ))
Hey many thanks! Yeah it would be boring if it was easy right? 🍻
Thanks for the video! What do you use to look around so smoothly? That's seems really handy.
Many thanks! I use the Grass Monkey King Puck system Grass Monkey Simulations 240hz Monkey King Puck Unboxing - Setup Review - Head Tracking

@@Dreamsofwings Thanks a lot, that looks very interesting. 👍🏻 Will check it out.

Great video! My setup for Comanche ILS approaches is to stabalize at 120mph ~15" MP clean, then once about 1 dot high on the glideslope put the gear down. You can then nose over and hold the GS at 110-115mph and 14-15" all the way to minimums. If you break out, flaps 2/3rds, gradually slow to 85mph across the numbers and land. If you go missed approached, only the landing gear to worry about cleaning up, faster initial climb, and much less pitch force.
If you prefer a slower approach speed, perhaps 1/3 flaps at top of glide with the gear and 100mph probably about 13.5 - 14" MP. Very unusual in actual practice to add flaps during the final approach segement unless the runway is in sight as it increases pilot workload and potentially destabilizes the approach.
Trim is critical in the Comanche, more so than lighter planes as you point out many times.
Many thanks! Very useful information there too!
Just rewatching and for how important trim is to flying well, it irks me that MSFS (and most addons) implement it so badly. There’s nothing I hate more than fiddling with trim in the sim. Of course, the Comanche gets it right.
Yes trim is so key to flying smoothly (and making it easier on the pilot of course!) and the Comanche is spot on.
I know you did this a while back, but I think you did on the landing what I sometimes do when I am on a runway made for airliners; flared a bit too soon and plonked yourself down a bit hard. The Comanche is forgiving! Great vid. Helpful in many ways to a noob like myself. 👍🏼
Many thanks.
Thanks again! Inspires me to take the Comanche out tomorrow. BTW, I’ve yet to see any water in my fuel - have you?
Thanks! Yes seen it once so it keeps me on my toes! 🤣
@@Dreamsofwings what did you do, empty the tanks and refill?
@@MrPeterhemm keep taking samples until you’ve drained the water out
Just wish we could get the GTN for the Xbox version of the Comanche so I can use Navigraph in it 🥺
Ah yes good point!
Hopefully it is on Navigraph’s to do list! They have been increasing the number of aircraft with SimBrief flight plan import capability for XBox simmers lately.
1:36:28 You mention that "ILS just kicked in" Im confused over that. Can you explain what you see that tells you that ? Moments after I see LNAV but I dont see that when I fly in on ILS.
The GTNxi 750 goes from GPS to VLOC which means the ILS glidesope and localiser will now be displayed on the instruments. This happens as part of the sequence of the GTN following the approach procedure and then switching to VLOC as the aircraft manoeuvres onto runway heading.
@@Dreamsofwings Ah, so the GTN will do the switch from GPS based on going into the approach section of the flight plan ? ?
@@swedishguyflies9077 - In practice you shouldn't rely on the switch being automatic. The CDI button on the 750 will switch it positively which would make sense to do once established on the outbound portion of the course reversal for this approach. Had a real life practice approach with a GTN 650 that didn't switch as expected. Not a bad practice for ILS approaches to also setup the #2 VOR to the ILS for cross check
You get a like 2 mins in for silly dog humor. :-)
🤣 yes apologies, I keep telling myself I need to take things more seriously!
Great video. Stimulated me to try ILS as way.
I guess you don’t really get any help from glide slope then just a frequency to point to with NAV1 ?
Many thanks! If the airport has an ILS with glidesope as well as localiser then you should see both.
Don’t run fuel rich until time to take off. If you foul the plugs then lean the mixture and increase the rpm’s and let it run that way making sure
Your CHTs don’t go to high and you’ll get the plugs cleaned that way. This is also how you would do it in a real plane. A2A did a great job simulating what really happens in real life. When you start the engine and see the oil temps rise you lean to peak rpm and you won’t have issues fouling plugs at all. Just make sure your putting mixture to full when your line up for take off.
Yes thats right, I did lean on the ground
I find it odd that the Comanche doesn't have provision for a Ground Power Unit (GPU).
I think it a small light piston aircraft like this its fairly common not to, which is why you have to be VERY careful with draining battery lol
Why you taxi so far on the runway?
Because I was talking and taxiing to the end of the displace threshold. You don’t need to do that, you can actually use the displaced threshold area to taxi and take off but not for repeated landings. Hope that helps.
😅 Yeah was wondering.. first you hold short at 06 and then taxi back on the runway? 😉
@@tibortefsen77 ah well, I think perhaps you’ve missed the point that I needed to go down to trigger the ATC, which then stopped working anyway. I think overall a pretty minor thing though lol
Another great video DOW :) Looks like you might be using REX terrain colouring? None of my business if you're happy with it but I recently got back into flying again and REX updated and made everything look muddy brown, even the roads, until I removed the terrain colouring option. Keep 'em coming!
Many thanks chap! Now that we are spring it is less brown I am pleased to report.
@@Dreamsofwings jolly hockey sticks!
Such an enjoyable video. The terrain you are flying over looks so real !
Many thanks! Yes CLi4D Designs did an amazing job of enhancing it
And you can import direct from SimBrief 🎉
Yes thats what I did
Have they updated the Comanche to simulate wear/damage to other parts of the airplane? Such as the flaps when operated improperly? This was a feature in older A2A products. From what I can tell, this Comanche seems to only simulate parts of the engine. I might have missed further details though.
I see you have an overview of this airplane! I'll go and take a look at that.
@@VoicefulRiver simple answer is yes, that is why the walk around is quite critical.
wayyy more than just the engine are fully simulated.
I’ve had flaps that are stuck .
Great vid bud
Many thanks!
@@Dreamsofwings your welcome 😃
Really enjoyed this, especially as I'm getting back into the Comanche having had it on the shelf for a while and also really loving the GTN750. I feel most at home with it vs G1000 or the smaller units. I chuckled each time you did the dog voice. What does your wife make of that? 😂
Hopefully she’ll never watch it and find out! 🤦🏻♂️. Glad you enjoyed it! Many thanks 🍻
Thanks @Dreamsofwings - as someone just starting out with the TDS GTNXi 750 and the A2A Comanche, this is exactly what I need to help me get accustomed to both! You say it's not a tutorial and while it may not be instructor level, it will certainly be a massive help to me. Thanks again :)
Many thanks!
Will be looking forward to the King Air flights. . .
Do you know the GTN has been updated to allow SimBrief import and Navigraph charts in Europe ?
If it’s in Navigraph it is now in the TDS GTNxi so yes, will work across entire world.
