    Great timing for me on this video, I have 3 more 3x8 raised beds to fill and several to top off. I mix in my compost with my hands too, that "dirt" just feels so darn good! Rain and chilly today in my Zone 7. I watched your other video on the all purpose mix and was planning on using what I had, which was mushroom compost. Well...... yesterday I discovered my local landscape supply company sells Premium Leaf Compost by the scoop!!! I now have 2 scoops of beautiful "delicious" leaf compost sitting tarped and ready to use to fill those 3 beds!!! I am SO EXCITED!! I am blessed and thankful. I received my order from your seed shop and will be filling the grow bags up and getting them ready for my herb sprouts, thanks for the Shasta Daisy seeds, my favorite flower! My tomato sprouts are growing wonderfully from a previous order. Gonna look into the AgroThrive, as I like to use a water soluble fertilizer as well. Thanks for a great video and lots of very helpful information!

  • @anthonyjones7264
    @anthonyjones7264 Год назад

    If you don't have a compost bin that's more on you than anything. I have 3 of them going at different times for different reasons. You have a lot of material there from those dead stalks you could use to start with. Save your weeds and throw them in there as well. Honestly composting is super easy you just have to add stuff to it.

    The first bed I filled dropped a good 8-10 inches since last year. It’s a 30 inch tall bed so I’m going to dig out most of the “good” soil on top and refill the bottom with wood chips and leaves sticks etc then put the good soil back on top with the fertilizers and such. Just can’t afford to add another 8-10 inches again.

If your not familiar with them, this one has a small pail that goes in the machine, stirs up the kitchen scraps and when it is all crushed it gets heated and dried. When finished it it about a half cup of dried compost. Can I safely add this directly to my beds or just throw it in my compost pile for a few months.?///

      It works, I dont do it as the neem meal was a bit to expensive and hard to fine. Outdoors I dont really worry about gnats as Nature takes care of them.

    One of the problems that has developed in my raised bed is that the weed block I put down two years ago has not prevented weeds from coming up in the box. Also, I have a maple tree that has decided to put its roots up into the raised bed. So, short of emptying the bed and sifting and then putting down cardboard, any suggestions?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Год назад

      Weeds seeds are often in the soil and sit dormant. So old weed block wont matter. Adding in manures, compost brings seeds. Outside the bock, I would use a shove to cut shallow tree roots going in. I would just weed and plant to be honest.

    Hey Gary, if I might ask, while raking my soil getting ready to plant, I found a few grubs, (I hadn't even shoveled yet), last season it was a bigger problem. How can I kill them without toxic chemicals aa it's my cuc/squash garden. I have Neem oil, can try Nematodes if you suggest (didn't help last summer but I didn't stick with it) Thanks my friend

      You cant. All grubs arent bad btw. And I am not 100% sure Neem works agains all grubs etc. Nematodes do work but again depends on the target. However, I have had tons of grubs forever in my gardens and I Let them just do their thing. When I use Neem drench it was to target wire worms which seemed to work.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you Gary, from all the vids I just assumed any grubs meant my garden was in peril. I did read a certain number of them per sq ft/yd was bad, but it was about lawns and I'm nowhere near that amount anyway.. My first year using my new drip irrigation was my failure last summer, not grubs, I had a leak at the faucet and kept shutting it off, forgetting to turn it back on, they suffered from lack of water and 100+ degree temps. I'm excited to have my best season with you this year

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN This was such valuable info, we less-experienced gardeners panic at the first sign of critters, it's good to learn in moderation that they serve a purpose

    Is it true you should not put same kind of plant in same spot year after year?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Год назад

      Nope. If you have specific insect outbreak that affects the plants, you might move them. But it home gardens where you amend soil and insect can just move to where the plants are, its not needed. That rotation is done for mass scale or larger farm of crops.

    QUESTION! My raised beds are entering their 5th year. I just had them tested for the first time by the state extension service. The macro nutrients are all "very high, above optimum," and the micronutrients are all "adequate or sufficient." The only fertilization they've ever had were homemade compost, organic granular, and alfalfa. The recommendation is that I grow this years crops with only a 1-0-0 fertilizer and not add compost. I'm fine with all that, but the beds are now about 4 inches low. Is there a way to fill them without raising the nutrient level?

    so last year I went through a separation and the place that I live in the trailer park got sold and there's a realtor who wants to sell the place that I rent. so last fall I got very salty about it. not literally. but I seed bombed the entire yard and was taking plants out that were important plants because they didn't know if I would have to move. and now I know that my yard is so messed up and I don't really know what to do about that. do you have any ideas or sympathy? I don't f*ing know 😂😩😭

      Hopefully "seed bombed" with cover plants!
      My cover crops incl. Cereal Rye planted last fall in the raised beds have been photosynthesing on and off during the many warm spells over winter in S. MI. Additionally, I planted some garlic cloves to overwintet. My plan is to just plant starts into holes in the cover keeping as much cover growth in place, to be weeded and laid as mukch later on the season, but b4 going to hard seed. Obviously, I'll disturb the soul more to orep for direct seeded carrots & parsnips.
      GOOD LUCK! Hope you can re-cover both garden and elsewhere in life. Glad you didn't use real salt!
