Really like it, thanks for the advice! How long roughly are the stages? Eg sanding, painting, drying? Complete newbie (with a wife nagging for it to be done lol). Also what type of work gloves are those?
Hi thanks a lot, it's great the film was useful It took me about 20 minutes to prepare and 15 to paint but it the radiator is very small and it was rusty only at the bottom. Check my other film where the radiator is very rusty and much bigger, it was about and hour to prepare it, here's the link: ruclips.net/video/bg2oq8-_PWM/видео.html Check the paint how long it dries but I wouldn't put the heating on or place anything on the radiator for at least 24 hours even if the paint is not sticky. You don't have to use the gloves, I usually do even for not particularly dirty jobs, just the habit from work. The gloves are from a DIY shop, nothing fancy. I don'r know the brand but it's the cheap stuff. Good luck with your work

@@chrissy212e it depends what kind of paint you are going to use . We used one coat paint so priming wasn't needed but for some other types it might be necessary or recommended. Our radiator was painted a few years ago and still looks good.
I'm confused. I sanded the rust away, wiped it down, then painted it with radiator paint, yet within minutes the rust patches came through again!! Please help?!
Hi again, have not heard good ratings on the Dulux one coat for wood and metal on Amazon. It is very thin and runny, and many were complaining of endless dripping not to mention the unbearable odour. What is your say on this, please? The insructions on the box say "may need two coats" for a paint which is claimed to be One-coat? Thank you.
Hi, it's up to you of course what you want to buy, there are different brands to choose from. I am personally pleased with the effect, I've painted a few radiators (one was very bad, ruclips.net/video/bg2oq8-_PWM/видео.html), one coat only and they are still ok, not yellow or cracked at all. I don't think the paint is runny, just ordinary, just don't put a lot on the paintbrush and you'll be OK. I'm afraid I can't recommend anything as it's the only one I use, there is still a bit left in the tin.
I have to agree with the smell (they must have changed the paint it never use to be a bad smell) .... Its made me ill. But the paint itself is OK, not sure I'd use it on metal though.
@@k-nemo Hi thank u 4 all your helpful videos but what if you have a a radiator badly rusted inside the gaps between the panels from being by a window that was badly condensated through the winter. I dont have double glazing and my Living Room radiators have both rusted. It's a rented place and the Council will not replace them or the old windows that sweat real bad when it's cold. Heat reflectors just got mouldy so I remove them.
I did not do it right. There was a flaking portion on the upper side of my rad and I did sand it down but did not sand it throughout the whole section. I painted with Wickes quick dry white gloss for metal and appliances. The shadow/traces of the flaked area still appears albeit in full white. Would another attempt to sand down the whole portion to bare metal of that particular side of the rad and then using Dulux once for wood and metal Gloss make the traces disappear? Furthermore, I touched my bathroom rad and there were bubbles of paint which burst to the touch. I am assuming those areas need to be competelty stripped off? How far do I go for the stripping/sanding off the area? What number sandpaper to use for these types of jobs please? You make it look so easy and the end-result so smooth :) Thank you for your advice.
I'm afraid the radiator must be really smooth before you start painting. Doesn't matter how many layers you'll do, the rough areas will still show. You have to sand the areas with bubbles as well. See my other film how to do the prep ruclips.net/video/bg2oq8-_PWM/видео.html, maybe it will help a bit.
@@k-nemo if you don’t go down to bare metal anywhere on rad sure after proper surface prep clean you can just apply 2 plus coats of Enamel rad paint but if you go down to bare metal anywhere then you must use a dpeacilised metals paint to prime the surface of bare metal before applying enamel top coat on a rad otherwise you can get problems in long run

The radiator is usually not flat and the sanding machine will be of little use. Try not to grind too intensively. The radiator is often made of a thin sheet of metal :). You don't have to remove paint from the entire radiator, either. Just remove it from the places where it doesn't stick firmly. The remaining areas can be sanded lightly with the sandpaper to make the new coating stick better. You can see how I sanded the radiator with thick but badly crack paint. ruclips.net/video/bg2oq8-_PWM/видео.html
I used Dullux once, there is no need for priming. A did a job a few years ago and the radiator sill looks great. Read the description on the paint you're going to use, it will tell you if you need to prime first.
I’d use hammerite kurust on any and all rust then I’d use hammerite dpeacisls metals paint to prime any bare metal then it’s 2-4 coats of enamel radiator paint
Using the wrong paint - heatproof paint needed. Dulux Once should only be used prior to chucking the radiator out! The paint would wrinkle and fail even if it did stick.
My dad always use to use gloss. If you sand down to bare metal arnt u better off using a metal primer before. ? Is any primer ok or does it have to be heat proof. Presume any metal primer ok.

I did the work nearly two years ago and the radiator still looks great One important tip: remove all the rust and try to leave the surface as smooth as possible.

No not Dulux one coat gloss on rads hell no it’s not designed for direct contact on high heat areas that’s why you have rad paint specifically designed for the purpose sure your can get away with it but in long run it can end up a right looking mess

So once sanded etc do u apply anti rust such as kurust before painting enamel paint on top or do u apply primer before top coat
I did not use a primer. Such paint does not require it. A radiator in a house does not usually corrode from the outside like a car, for example.
The idea of sanding is to make surface rough so paint sticks well Learnt that the hard way
And removal of rust.
When there's rust on the outside, should I worry about the rust from the inside?
Do you use special paint or will ordinary gloss paint be ok?
Dulux Once. For wood and metal
What primer on any bare metal ?
Without primer. This paint does not require. The radiator is not susceptible to corrosion like the car chassis.

Hi
Thanks for watching
only issue I have with this video is that the radiator didn't even look like it needed to be touched up
It was corroding at the bottom and had gray discoloration.
40 grit is really rough. I would have thought 80 would have been fine for that work.
I used 80 on a different radiator. It worked very well
Wouldn't it be easier taking it off the wall
It dependns how bad is the radiator. Mine was not so bad so I decided to paint the front and back only. It's looks very good now.
