This was really good, and to dig deeper, I recommend reading Like A Mighty Army by Charles W. Conn. He covers the very beginning of the church (R.G. Spurling) to 1976. It’s better than I expected prior to reading, and even a required reading for Lee University students. My father owned it since it first published and although I’d walk by it for years, I believe God prepared me to finally read/comprehend it at 36 years old. Thank you for posting!
As an Ordained Bishop and lifetime member of the Church of God, I want to commend your excellent description of our denomination. The biggest change I have seen in my 52 years, there is a whole lot less emphasis on the denomination and it’s beliefs, focusing exclusively on the Gospel and Great Commission. (Not that they didn’t in the past).

It was a humble beginning of the great missionary Rev. Robert Felix Cook, who came to India as a missionary of the Church of God. God had used him in a mighty way to expand his kingdom. Can you clear something up for me? So you'll believe in the Trinity Exactly like the assemblies of God? But there is another Church Of God in Cleveland Tennessee called International. They believe in non trinitarianism Correct? I'm assuming that you all had a split? Both stayed in Cleveland Tennessee? Then they had to change their name?
I love your videos. Whatever denomination you present, it is just a good fact based teaching. No personal opinions, or added comments. Unlike all the news we have today. I love learning about other denominations here. No better site online than this site for that purpose.

I grew up in it as well, and I am very anti-mainstream Christianity ✝️ And Yet Quite the opposite your direction. The questions drew me closer to Scripture and Relationship with God. Original Christianity is the ONLY Christianity.

the reverence for God found in the Church of God is astounding .Where God is honored and respected God attends .The deacons used to ring a bell once the Holy Spirit was detected in the church .And all activity ceased and all thought on the things of God and the presence of God was thick in that church .So thick you could cut it with a knife
I grew up in COG in small town Indiana. I have great uncles, uncles & cousins who are Pastors within the COG. My only concern with the denomination is the speaking in tongues & emphasis on tithes. Also, there seems to be a need to become saved every Sunday, when its the same congregation in the pews. Its like they dont trust their own salvation or the blood of Jesus. This has been a fair analysis imo, based on my experience within COG.
As someone who grew up in this church and left it, it was very insightful to get some information as to the system of belief. It's hard for me to be unbiased about the character of this church because of experiences that I went through, I appreciate your neutral information.
I didn't know that the church that I attended in Indonesia, Gereja Bethel Indonesia, was actually part of COG TN. It's one of the most popular protestant denominations in Indonesia.
@@manoeldejesus2864 Hi, I'm not sure about the statistics, but I believe HKBP is the largest Protestant denomination in Indonesia in terms of followers. It is Lutheran, and I believe they are confessional Lutherans, not mainline.
I grew up in this denomination from childhood. I converted to Catholic in my twenties but I often think back on that time and my developing years in the "Church of God". I don't think anyone growing up steeped in that kind of setting can deny how dynamic and penetrating it was as an experience even if later on we've changed our doctrinal or intellectual leanings. One comment on the ownership of church properties. The COG denomination literally owns all local church properties........they state it as "holding in trust for the members of the COG". However, certain churches have gained an exemption as to this policy. Example. The Praise Cathedral COG in Greer, SC obtained such an exemption from the time of the inception of the congregation. In other words, if they ever chose to leave the COG Cleveland, Tn., they could do so while retaining full title to all properties which make up Praise Cathedral. The practical meaning of this rule plays out as follows. Years ago in the mid-1970s, the ruling body of the COG Cleveland decided that they would encourage all local churches within their denomination to adopt a more contemporary form of worship......which mainly had to do with using contemporary MUSIC. This meant that the use of the camp meeting style of hymns was OUT and the new contemporary music was IN. This was offensive to the maximum for many members who detested contemporary music along with its worldly style of presentation such as strobe lights and so forth. Many COG churches seriously considered pulling OUT of the COG Cleveland because of this new emphasis. BUT.......they soon learned to their dismay, that should they make this withdrawal, they would be stripped of all their property which THEY had paid for in the first place. Because of this property "taking", most offended churches decided to remain in the denomination......while a few churches indeed did set up new congregations while leaving their property behind. Getting back to Praise Cathedral (mentioned above), I can only conjecture that they wanted to have full liberty over their church property in the case that they (in the future) might decide to become an independent unit. Praise Cathedral is a very liberal church and uses contemporary music as its mainstay as of the current time period.
This type of property ownership will eventually come to bite back hard against local congregations, in ALL denominations that practice, if the local church follows the Lord and not man.

@@alethamobley6688 I don't know the history of the mentioned "Praise Cathedral" in Greer, SC, but I'd imagine that from time to time already-established independent Pentecostal churches might want to join a denomination like the Church of God, Cleveland, TN. They probably would have some leverage in negotiations with the governing state- and international-level COG administration and work out some "prenuptial agreement" in case things turned sour.

The COG Cleveland TN and Anderson IN sound like they support Evangelical "Orthodox" beliefs, for lack of a better term. (Orthodox meaning "right belief") I've seen advertising about and videos on several different non trinitarian "Churches of God" with cult leaders. How do we discern them on the surface as opposed to COG Cleveland or Anderson?
Most of the other Church of God groups you refer to are splits from the Worldwide Church of God, which broke into hundreds(!) of churches, nearly all of which claim to be the one true church on earth today. It is advisable for those who claim the name of Jesus Christ to read Acts, chapter 20 in particular, where the Apostle Paul prophesies of the advent of dangers to the Church, from without and from within. In addition, it is advised to approach all the scriptures by YOURSELF, first.

@@ccole6492 Satan will NOT leave the churches untouched. Paul and Peter were not ACCIDENTLY killed. The Catholic Church murdered millions within its own membership. The Reformed Church has NEVER used the words of Jesus, the savior of the world, as their reason for being. When people didn't have the scriptures, they were innocent. But now now that EVERYONE has access to the NT documents, ignoring or suppressing the words of Jesus make people "without excuse." Jesus' words are RIGHT THERE to be read whenever there is interest. But people will continue to only listen to the words of "men." Bill, the fact that Jesus said "When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith on earth?" speaks volumes. It is incumbent on all of us to ask Him to help us be able to distinguish between what is true and what is false. He said "Ask and it shall be given" and "I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you." He loves us very much!
Our former church which was an Assembly Of God, decided people couldn’t attain membership unless they’d been baptized. While we were members sadly we left, for this reason and a few more.
This video presents the information gleaned from COG Cleveland, Tn source material put out for public consumption. The actual truth of this denomination is quite different as you will see it practiced on the local church level. This particular church has a hierarchy that is equivalent to that of the Roman Catholic church as to its complexity and sheer size. What this means in plain terms is that this church is overloaded with policymakers who all receive handsome salaries and benefits for their "do-nothing" careers. This group of self-appointed religious potentates has been allowed to expand and flourish due to one reason: the laity (local level church members) of the Church of God Cleveland for the most part does not understand how their own church is structured; their part is to feed the money into the local churches who in turn send a portion of that money to headquarters. Local members of the COG are useful only as they feed the organization with operating funds. This is not to say that other protestant denominations are not like this to some degree, but this group started out in the early 1900s with members who were either illiterate or semi-illiterate and simply did not have the education to understand how their church operated. Today, there is no excuse for such ignorance among its members since the working class now has a much better education. This ruling class in Cleveland, Tn does understand one thing: They had to do away with the strict and harsh rules that they burdened the laity with up until the 1970s BECAUSE those same members were leaving the COG Cleveland while becoming members of more liberal charismatic churches ie. Assembly of God. You might say they feared that their salaries/perks might be in jeopardy. Looking at the "money trail" usually tells the true story.
I go to a Church of God and I love it, no church or religion can ever fill you quite like a relationship with God will though! All churches have their flaws so I’m so glad that we serve a God that is abundant in grace and mercy.
Everything you said is true. I grew up in the Church of God my father was the secretary. I have gone to General Assemblies, Camp Meetings, Youth camps, Vacation Bible School, and Lady’s Auxiliaries. I can’t forget Joy Bell, Blue Bells. It is all about money. I always felt that something wasn’t right. I serve the TMH and not doctrines of man. I give him thanks and praise for opening my eyes. Thanks for this interesting post. You're saying the COG hierarchy kinda operates like the CCP. I grew up COG Cleveland and my parents were missionaries for the denomination much of their adult lives. They met at Lee College (now Lee University) in Cleveland, TN. They had their own misgivings about the denomination at times but were completely committed it, feeling it was their calling and duty. Not being Southerners (both from Western USA), and a bit different anyway in their outlooks, they didn't fit in so well to the social hierarchy of church leadership. My mother recalled that at one General Assembly a (connected-to-the-hierarchy) lady was crying because her husband had been newly assigned the hardship of being "Overseer of [the COG's organization within] Oklahoma" (I might have the wrong state, but it was a state outside the "promised land" of Tennessee/Alabama/Georgia/Florida/South Carolina). Meanwhile, my parents were operating on a shoestring budget in some difficult circumstances. My siblings and I have appreciated a lot of what we grew up with in the COG but none of us now attend COGs back here in the USA.
It sucks that women can't be bishops, but from what I understand, from people who've attended General Assembly recently, the vote is gradually changing in favor of women becoming bishops. Hopefully, after next general assembly, there will need to be a minor amendment to this video! Basically, they're kinda waiting for the age demographic to change and younger bishops to outnumber the older bishops who keep voting it down.
Grew up in this church. Grandfather is Ray Dupre and he has been a high ranking member in this church since i was a child. This place is not a church, it is an active cult that luckily i got out of when i turned 18. They use many translations, including the KJV. More recent, carefully researched and commissioned translations, generally are more faithful to the original languages than KJV. In my experience growing up many in the Church of God, Cleveland, TN used KJV, NIV, ESV, NASB translations, and the Living Bible paraphrase for younger people. I go elsewhere these days so I'm out of touch with current practices. Hopefully they stay away from The Passion Translation and similar abominations.

I grew up COG. I spent 20 years in the COG. My grandfather was a retired COG minister. I found that the COG covered up sexual sins against children. I have many examples of this cover up.
Just another of thousands of man made Protestant denominations. Jesus created One Church, in Matt 16:18, the pillar and foundation of truth, 1 Tim 3:15, and the Final Authority in Matt 18:15-17. Martin Luther came along 1500 years later and created his own false teachings like Bible Alone, Faith Alone, and Once Saved Always Saved for example. Thousands of Protestant denominations all teach different doctrines and beliefs just like Luther did, yet all read the same Bible. There was no Bible before the late 4th Century when the Catholic Church sifted thru over 200 "Books" that people argued about, finally settling on the 27 books of the New Testament, combining them with the 46 books of the OT, and giving the Bible to the world. In 107 AD St. Ignatius of Antioch, a Bishop in the Church Jesus created, wrote a letter calling his Church "Catholic" or Universal. The end.
That came about in the 1960s from independent congregations (not affiliated with the Church of God), and I believe it’s because some held similar names that were confused with being affiliated with the denomination. When Church of God caught wind of it, they immediately cleared the confusion, but apparently some still think there’s a connection. I’ve attended Church of God services since 1984, and my father’s a bishop in the denomination. Of all the traveling we did visiting and pastoring churches, not once have I ever witnessed snake handling. This includes multiple states on the east coast and midwest.
@@jeremyryannoel The real answer is as follows: In 1886 when the COG Cleveland, Tn. was instituted, there were a few churches within the initial grouping that did practice serpent-handling which was a carryover practice before they were members of the COG Cleveland. When the practice became known to the Cleveland headquarters, they immediately disfellowshipped those churches and issued a clear theological statement that they did NOT sanction such practices and any member church that did would be disfellowshipped. Because no Pentecostal denomination would approve this practice, all of these churches of necessity became independent churches and that remains true to this day. Part of the confusion which surrounds this discussion arises because some of these churches use the term "Church of God" in their church name. In most cases, the distinction can be drawn by noting that most of these church names will usually end with the words "with signs following". In other words........."The Dolly Pond Church of God With Signs Following" is one of the named churches.
@@uriahpeep1753 Not that I don’t believe you, but where are your citing your source(s)? I don’t recall reading this in Like A Mighty Army, by Charles H. Conn, but it does mention the issue. It was addressed in the General Assembly in 1928 as some isolated sections of the South, snakes and fire were handled in services. F.J. Lee handled the matter that it soon died without official action being taken, and most of the Church never realized there had been a threat of such spiritual defect. In other words, it was somewhat of an isolated incident from a few churches, General Assembly and the General Overseer addressed it in 1928, and denounced it.
The only issues are speaking in tongues is not Biblical as it's done in these churches and the laying on of hands as done in these churches are not Biblical. These things are done for show as former members have noted
The church is not Roman only, never was and never will be. It is universal (Catholic, but not Roman only). It may seem strange to you, but Peter was an Apostle, and not a Bishop. Read Acts.

The only one of the twelve to ever be a bishop was John and that was at Ephesus. He would have been what we would call Orthodox, but also Pentecostal. The Church is universal in nature. The Roman Catholic Church is only a part of the universal Church. Currently a very large per cent of the Church is the Holiness/Pentecostal/Charismatic branch. But that being said it is only part of the universal Church. Jesus said we would be one. He meant that. We do not have executive right to be the only branch, neither does any branch.
Some of us who were raised in this cult refer to this organization as the church of gods since they are Tritheist in doctrine.. They worship three gods like their mother cult Catholics.

Confusion. What you mentioned refers to a cultic group called "World Mission Society Church of God," which believe in God the Father and God the Mother. This video is about the Church of God, know as Church of God (Cleveland), which is a evangelical, Trinitarian Pentecosstal denomination, that belongs to the National Association of Evangelicals. Very different group. That is the problem with names.

This was really good, and to dig deeper, I recommend reading Like A Mighty Army by Charles W. Conn. He covers the very beginning of the church (R.G. Spurling) to 1976. It’s better than I expected prior to reading, and even a required reading for Lee University students. My father owned it since it first published and although I’d walk by it for years, I believe God prepared me to finally read/comprehend it at 36 years old. Thank you for posting!

As an Ordained Bishop and lifetime member of the Church of God, I want to commend your excellent description of our denomination. The biggest change I have seen in my 52 years, there is a whole lot less emphasis on the denomination and it’s beliefs, focusing exclusively on the Gospel and Great Commission. (Not that they didn’t in the past).

I grew up in COG in small town Indiana. I have great uncles, uncles & cousins who are Pastors within the COG. My only concern with the denomination is the speaking in tongues & emphasis on tithes. Also, there seems to be a need to become saved every Sunday, when its the same congregation in the pews. Its like they dont trust their own salvation or the blood of Jesus.
This has been a fair analysis imo, based on my experience within COG.

I didn't know that the church that I attended in Indonesia, Gereja Bethel Indonesia, was actually part of COG TN. It's one of the most popular protestant denominations in Indonesia.

I grew up in this denomination from childhood. I converted to Catholic in my twenties but I often think back on that time and my developing years in the "Church of God". I don't think anyone growing up steeped in that kind of setting can deny how dynamic and penetrating it was as an experience even if later on we've changed our doctrinal or intellectual leanings.

One comment on the ownership of church properties. The COG denomination literally owns all local church properties........they state it as "holding in trust for the members of the COG". However, certain churches have gained an exemption as to this policy. Example. The Praise Cathedral COG in Greer, SC obtained such an exemption from the time of the inception of the congregation. In other words, if they ever chose to leave the COG Cleveland, Tn., they could do so while retaining full title to all properties which make up Praise Cathedral. The practical meaning of this rule plays out as follows. Years ago in the mid-1970s, the ruling body of the COG Cleveland decided that they would encourage all local churches within their denomination to adopt a more contemporary form of worship......which mainly had to do with using contemporary MUSIC. This meant that the use of the camp meeting style of hymns was OUT and the new contemporary music was IN. This was offensive to the maximum for many members who detested contemporary music along with its worldly style of presentation such as strobe lights and so forth. Many COG churches seriously considered pulling OUT of the COG Cleveland because of this new emphasis. BUT.......they soon learned to their dismay, that should they make this withdrawal, they would be stripped of all their property which THEY had paid for in the first place. Because of this property "taking", most offended churches decided to remain in the denomination......while a few churches indeed did set up new congregations while leaving their property behind. Getting back to Praise Cathedral (mentioned above), I can only conjecture that they wanted to have full liberty over their church property in the case that they (in the future) might decide to become an independent unit. Praise Cathedral is a very liberal church and uses contemporary music as its mainstay as of the current time period.
This type of property ownership will eventually come to bite back hard against local congregations, in ALL denominations that practice, if the local church follows the Lord and not man.

The COG Cleveland TN and Anderson IN sound like they support Evangelical "Orthodox" beliefs, for lack of a better term. (Orthodox meaning "right belief") I've seen advertising about and videos on several different non trinitarian "Churches of God" with cult leaders. How do we discern them on the surface as opposed to COG Cleveland or Anderson?
Most of the other Church of God groups you refer to are splits from the Worldwide Church of God, which broke into hundreds(!) of churches, nearly all of which claim to be the one true church on earth today. Our former church which was an Assembly Of God, decided people couldn’t attain membership unless they’d been baptized. While we were members sadly we left, for this reason and a few more.
So it was founded a few centuries ago but the Catholic church is 2000 years old
This video presents the information gleaned from COG Cleveland, Tn source material put out for public consumption. The actual truth of this denomination is quite different as you will see it practiced on the local church level. This particular church has a hierarchy that is equivalent to that of the Roman Catholic church as to its complexity and sheer size. What this means in plain terms is that this church is overloaded with policymakers who all receive handsome salaries and benefits for their "do-nothing" careers. This group of self-appointed religious potentates has been allowed to expand and flourish due to one reason: the laity (local level church members) of the Church of God Cleveland for the most part does not understand how their own church is structured; their part is to feed the money into the local churches who in turn send a portion of that money to headquarters. Local members of the COG are useful only as they feed the organization with operating funds. This is not to say that other protestant denominations are not like this to some degree, but this group started out in the early 1900s with members who were either illiterate or semi-illiterate and simply did not have the education to understand how their church operated. Today, there is no excuse for such ignorance among its members since the working class now has a much better education. This ruling class in Cleveland, Tn does understand one thing: They had to do away with the strict and harsh rules that they burdened the laity with up until the 1970s BECAUSE those same members were leaving the COG Cleveland while becoming members of more liberal charismatic churches ie. Assembly of God. You might say they feared that their salaries/perks might be in jeopardy. Looking at the "money trail" usually tells the true story.
I go to a Church of God and I love it, no church or religion can ever fill you quite like a relationship with God will though! All churches have their flaws so I’m so glad that we serve a God that is abundant in grace and mercy.
Everything you said is true. I grew up in the Church of God my father was the secretary. I have gone to General Assemblies, Camp Meetings, Youth camps, Vacation Bible School, and Lady’s Auxiliaries. I can’t forget Joy Bell, Blue Bells. It is all about money. I always felt that something wasn’t right. I serve the TMH and not doctrines of man. I give him thanks and praise for opening my eyes. I grew up COG Cleveland and my parents were missionaries for the denomination much of their adult lives. They met at Lee College (now Lee University) in Cleveland, TN.
They had their own misgivings about the denomination at times but were completely committed it, feeling it was their calling and duty. Not being Southerners (both from Western USA), and a bit different anyway in their outlooks, they didn't fit in so well to the social hierarchy of church leadership. My mother recalled that at one General Assembly a (connected-to-the-hierarchy) lady was crying because her husband had been newly assigned the hardship of being "Overseer of [the COG's organization within] Oklahoma" (I might have the wrong state, but it was a state outside the "promised land" of Tennessee/Alabama/Georgia/Florida/South Carolina). Meanwhile, my parents were operating on a shoestring budget in some difficult circumstances.
My siblings and I have appreciated a lot of what we grew up with in the COG but none of us now attend COGs back here in the USA.

It sucks that women can't be bishops, but from what I understand, from people who've attended General Assembly recently, the vote is gradually changing in favor of women becoming bishops. Hopefully, after next general assembly, there will need to be a minor amendment to this video! Basically, they're kinda waiting for the age demographic to change and younger bishops to outnumber the older bishops who keep voting it down.

They use many translations, including the KJV. More recent, carefully researched and commissioned translations, generally are more faithful to the original languages than KJV. In my experience growing up many in the Church of God, Cleveland, TN used KJV, NIV, ESV, NASB translations, and the Living Bible paraphrase for younger people. I go elsewhere these days so I'm out of touch with current practices. Hopefully they stay away from The Passion Translation and similar abominations.

I grew up COG. I spent 20 years in the COG. My grandfather was a retired COG minister. I found that the COG covered up sexual sins against children. I have many examples of this cover up.
Just another of thousands of man made Protestant denominations. Jesus created One Church, in Matt 16:18, the pillar and foundation of truth, 1 Tim 3:15, and the Final Authority in Matt 18:15-17. Martin Luther came along 1500 years later and created his own false teachings like Bible Alone, Faith Alone, and Once Saved Always Saved for example. Thousands of Protestant denominations all teach different doctrines and beliefs just like Luther did, yet all read the same Bible. There was no Bible before the late 4th Century when the Catholic Church sifted thru over 200 "Books" that people argued about, finally settling on the 27 books of the New Testament, combining them with the 46 books of the OT, and giving the Bible to the world. In 107 AD St. Ignatius of Antioch, a Bishop in the Church Jesus created, wrote a letter calling his Church "Catholic" or Universal. The end.

That came about in the 1960s from independent congregations (not affiliated with the Church of God), and I believe it’s because some held similar names that were confused with being affiliated with the denomination. When Church of God caught wind of it, they immediately cleared the confusion, but apparently some still think there’s a connection. I’ve attended Church of God services since 1984, and my father’s a bishop in the denomination. Of all the traveling we did visiting and pastoring churches, not once have I ever witnessed snake handling. This includes multiple states on the east coast and midwest.

@@jeremyryannoel The real answer is as follows: In 1886 when the COG Cleveland, Tn. was instituted, there were a few churches within the initial grouping that did practice serpent-handling which was a carryover practice before they were members of the COG Cleveland. When the practice became known to the Cleveland headquarters, they immediately disfellowshipped those churches and issued a clear theological statement that they did NOT sanction such practices and any member church that did would be disfellowshipped. Because no Pentecostal denomination would approve this practice, all of these churches of necessity became independent churches and that remains true to this day. Part of the confusion which surrounds this discussion arises because some of these churches use the term "Church of God" in their church name. In most cases, the distinction can be drawn by noting that most of these church names will usually end with the words "with signs following". In other words........."The Dolly Pond Church of God With Signs Following" is one of the named churches.

It was addressed in the General Assembly in 1928 as some isolated sections of the South, snakes and fire were handled in services. F.J. Lee handled the matter that it soon died without official action being taken, and most of the Church never realized there had been a threat of such spiritual defect.
In other words, it was somewhat of an isolated incident from a few churches, General Assembly and the General Overseer addressed it in 1928, and denounced it.

The only one of the twelve to ever be a bishop was John and that was at Ephesus. He would have been what we would call Orthodox, but also Pentecostal. The Church is universal in nature. The Roman Catholic Church is only a part of the universal Church. Currently a very large per cent of the Church is the Holiness/Pentecostal/Charismatic branch.
