- Ever wanted to know what it looks like from the driver's perspective to drive a monster truck? Then look no further as we mounted a GoPro on the front of Steve Sims' helmet as he went through the racing bracket during the 2015 Bristol Motor Speedway's Thompson Metal Monster Truck Madness. We've also got an on board angle of Steven at work during freestyle.
Thanks to Steven Sims for allowing us to try the helmet cam out. Want more footage like this? Let us know in the comments what you'd like to see in the future! Авто/Мото
The jumps look much softer from the inside.
My dad is a retired monster truck driver and he told me the landing looks soft but he said they are not very soft
@@LefevermomWhat monster truck does your dad drive?
That engine sounds amazing! I love big engines.
And the whine from the trans
that looks way easier on the outside than on the inside
right
FuriousGamer425 Xx I drive these bad boys, they are pretty easy. As long as you have a good dashboard veiw!
Really CactiiGaming RBLX? You drive monster trucks? Do you, Cactii Gaming RBLX?
FuriousGamer425 Xx i
you do not drive, you play roblox.
Best monster truck audio I've heard so far, love the short revs
I can't IMMAGINE how LOUD that would be WITHOUT ear gear
Actully its not that bad inside the truck its weird how it is. I know some driver do wear ear protection tho
My dream to drive one of these, or racing. It’s my absolute dream to drive one of these though
Same here man hopefully we could compete against each other
Same man can’t wait to se y’all on the track
This is one of the best views yet! Keep up the good work! I LOVE the in-cab/helmet cams! Great perspective - keep 'em coming!!
+Robby Bode Thank you. It's something we'd like to do more often. Hopefully we'll get some more opportunities next summer.
Man that'd be cool to have one of those big machines if I drove one.
They cost up to like $500,000 i think Atleast. Maybe 300,000 or more ( Maybe also 200,000? But dam those monsters look like they cost $1,000,000 Like holly shit
Some monster jam trucks round up to arp ummmm and 250k just to build one
@@bekkerthesokuangeldragon68 150,000 to build one
Thanks for the video and thanks for coming to DELMAR, DE for Rick Disharoon’s Monster Truck event, we loved it.
WOW THX FOR THAT VIEW!! 👏👏👏
HELL YES that looks awesome!!!!!!!
THAT TURBO WHISTLE ...... OHHHHHHHHHH DAMNNNN
Monster's are blower motors so they're supercharged, not turbos in general terms. Although the XDP truck has a turbo with it being a diesel.
AllMonster I dont care :p ITS JUST SOUNDS AMAZING!
That's something we can definitely agree on.
AllMonster hahahah thanks for the info

The engine at idle is just like, “im ready, im ready, im so ready”
SO. READY.
Sick AF!!!!!
All my life I've always wanted to be a monster truck driver. I never knew how to get my chance behind the wheel. I live in Michigan where the first monster truck car crush was filmed on live T.V. Home to some of the craziest monster jam drivers (Team Scream) This gave me the feeling of being behind the wheel but makes me want to be a driver even more then ever!!!! I just wish I could have one chance to try it out!! Monster Jam please give me one chance to become a world famous monster truck driver!!! I wont disappoint and I will try to have the biggest fan following that you have ever seen. Bigger then grave digger and max D put together..... ok I know that is overkill but I really want to have my chance more then anyone on this planet!!
Probably not more than anyone. It's a goal of mine too
That is freakin awesome!
Wow 😮 that looks so cool in a monster truck I wanna drive one these days😂
I'm going to drive one these days
Me too.
Joe Legos same

I know it takes tense concentration with front and rear steering and staying stable as I know it's very very rocky ride in that truck. Driving the monster truck for racing and freestyling...is not easy
that looks like it would be so much fun
Omg That acceleration is rapid asf I didn't know they accelerate that quick it sound like the engine's out of the brisica f1 stock cars
I would like to see one of these drive down a highway. :) VERY COOL.
Tbh been my dream to drive for MJ and this gives a good look at what ima be going through lol
Hey man,i see u stop the monster truck more than one time, can i know that did u do it when drag racing or freestyle?
As soon as he gunned it, I instantly got that smell of methanol alcohol! Love it! Badass view keep up the good work
Man I remember going to this back when I was like 9
really enjoy the video. sounds amazing and my only question is the handle he pulls under the switch panels. is that a toggle power off and on for his main fuse panel to the fans-fuel pump ect?
I believe that's for turning the fuel on and off. The switch panel above controls all the electrical elements like the starter, mag, fans, etc. Directly above that I believe is the RII receiver.
It looks like the toggle switch used to control the rear steering..
How loud is it in there?
thats was cool. n very shaky lol sorta like a roller coster ride lol i like the front veiw cam myself nice vid !!
+Roger Mercer Would definitely like to work on the shakiness the next time we try the helmet cam. The mounting job was a bit rushed so hopefully they next time it'll be more stable and better to view. Thanks for checking it out!
AllMonster You use a 3M mount? I think it was a great view and the "shake" adds to the video and shows goe violent these things are to drive. Dont think you'll ever really get rid of the "shake"
What’s that switch on his right hand for ? The one right below the cluster . He’s holding onto all the time
supra1102 4 wheel steering switch
What monster truck you driving
Evergreen in a way!
I'd like to see an on board of Ryan Anderson in Son-Uva Digger.
We'd love to do one but you'll have to get it from Monster Jam. We're not able to film anything at their events. Put the word out to them and maybe someone will make it happen.
what is this for monster truck?
I've heard about Hooked and Stone Crusher having difficult steering. Could you explain why it does that?
I guess maybe it depends on what you might be referring to in difficulty of steering. One thing I remember about when talking to Morgan Kane about the differences between his Stone Crusher and Steve's, was that he didn't like the two front sway bars set up on Steve's truck. He felt like the additional sway bar behind the front axle made the front end of the truck push in corners so it wouldn't turn as tightly as his. However that extra front sway bar could add stability in a situation where you need to save the truck. I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe Steven had a locker put into his front axle as well which can lead to the truck being tight in corners and not turning as sharply as you might want, but it can be really useful in situations where you need both wheels putting equal power to the ground like saving the truck.
AllMonster alright
AllMonster but did you know that hooked and stone crusher's drivers are in the same family
+Business Dude really
Iron Man Guy
Yeah they are. Steve Sims used to drive Stone Crusher and his son Steven Sims used to drive Hooked.
It's my dream to be involved in the sport somewhere. wanted to be a driver/what needs to be done person.
The traditional way is to contact teams at local independent events and see if you can help out in any way. Often independent teams don't have large crews that can help them show to show so they may be open to having volunteer help. Just be prepared for long hours and hard work. Another route is starting out as a Monster Jam crew member and potentially you can find your way into a seat there, however they don't do much promoting from within these days.
Why does he keep shutting the engine off?
I'm gonna drive one soon
This is my dream job
What truck is it? is it the inside
+AllMonster can you do a view so we can see what the truck is doing?
Definitely would be something worth trying in the future. We do have other videos of Hooked in Bristol on our channel you can view to get an idea of what it was like from outside the cab. Thanks for the suggestion!
What monster truck is he riding
Looks fun but hell of a thing to drive
Is he racing or Freestyling?
The helmet cam perspective came from racing while the on board in the tail end of the video is from freestyle.
he was racing and at the end he was doing freestyle
Did he get a new helmet
I want to be a part of team grave digger when im. Older and it looks much more difficult to drive tan you'd think I drove a 77 farm truck a tracter and much more but monster trucks are crazy. I hope a can become part of team grave digger someday
I now know what it is going to be like the rest of my life
It's just like driving a normal truck but with fking Supercharged Engine and massive tires with big ass suspensions!!
COOOOOOOOOOL
Whats that button they hold onto for ????????
Rear steering
What's the grey thing he's holding onto his right hand with? I take it that it's just a handle, but there seems to be a switch on top?
Couldn't be a sequential gearbox shifter as he not pulling or pushing it?
All monster trucks are equipped with hydraulic rear steering that is controlled with a toggle switch. Basically the bar is there to hold onto and keep your hand near the rear steer switch.
AllMonster Cool to know! Thanks!
You're welcome. Thanks for checking out our video.
Cathal Mc Phillips reer stear
I would think I'd want the switch to go the direction the rear tires are turning. Not the way the front tires are turning. I've never driven one so I don't really know. Haha.
It’s it’s my dream to drive one of these
good luck!
sweet
What kind of engine is that? Plz respond
It's a 540 cubic Merlin engine which is blown and injected, fueled by methanol alcohol. The Merlin is based on a big block chevy, but not a GM product.
So how do they know which lane to go in for racing if there engine is on i barely heared the dude say "
Red lane"
If there's not radio communication from the crew chief then there's generally hand signals involved from either a crew member or an official. An official will turn their back to the truck and point to either their left or right arm to indicate whether they're in the left or right lane. This is also important for indicating which RII channel the truck is on.
AllMonster is the right lane the far one from the pit area?
It varies event to event. Sometimes it's a simple as being the right lane because it's to the right, other times it's based on where the show call location is.
I wish they made a new game like the old days on Amiga-new ages
Fuck that looks so fun.
Are all these truck running generally the same motor? Or is it brand specific? And what block is commonly used? LSX? OR hemi based?
A 540 big block Chevy is one of the defacto standards in the industry. A lot of them start with a 540 merlin and then customize to their needs. All of the Monster Jam fleet trucks utilize a 540 merlin built by Midgette Motorsports in Poplar Branch, NC. A number of the independently owned trucks have their engines built by Midgette Motorsports as well (Stone Crusher and Hooked, Over Bored and Black Pearl, etc.). Some teams do run different motors but a lot are at least based off a big block chevy. The Vaters Motorsports camp use Ford motors while the Hall Brothers Racing team uses Dodge's.
AllMonster thank you!!! I've always wondered what motors they used, I always figured it was a form of an lsxv just because of how easy plug and play they are as well as durable and modable.
The 540 Merlin set up has proven itself to be a great set up as it has been used heavily over the past ten years or more. They've got enough pep to battle with the bigger horsepower set ups but they're also reliable.
AllMonster Interesting to know, looks like I'll do some reading on the Merlin. I love most if gm's stuff. The ls motor was my first taste of affordable power when I turned 19 I bought a 2001 Camaro and wound yo with a very small head job and headers I made around 415hp to the wheel. I just sold it, but will have something new soon.
So thats how they don't fall off the truck 👍👍👍👍👍👍
damn that's insane scary kinda
Is it a hand brake just right from the wheel?
That's a switch for the rear wheel steering
you got it
That steering wheel is hard
Hard to believe they use to use just a lap belt with their heads hanging out the window on steel bodies leaf sprung trucks.
Monster jam?what truck? Let me know I'm a fan
Check that title out!
The first half of the video is awesome! Love the sound when giving it a tonne. Quick question, what camera was used on the helmet? Keen to chuck another camera in my truck the next show like you guys did here.heres some footage I got from a few months back. ruclips.net/video/gpybLs9Mork/видео.html
It was a GoPro Hero4 Session. They're the littler, cube model that GoPro introduced in the past two years. Simple and good quality, but battery life leaves a little to be desired. They're also very picky about what memory cards go into them so if you buy one, I'd highly advise getting a card off of GoPro's recommended cards list.
inside ahhhhhhhhhhh cool
How can u see
It isn't easy!
What kind of shifter is that?
not sure!
2 speed automatic
Imagine doing this with over 20,000 people watching.
If they are be inside Bristol motor speedway, then they should line these trucks up double file NASCAR style and race on the high backs turning left
It'd be difficult to make an even racing course and I doubt the speedway or NASCAR wants any kind of jumps built on the racing surface. It's a lot easier to fix some scrapes and bumps in the infield than on the track.
Top how I drove
What kinda power steering does this thing have lol
Front steering=wheel, rear steering=toggle switch. They're working hard up there!
which monster truck is this
Ethan Gallegos ahem HOOKED
What monster truck you were driving
+Packers Beast Well we weren't driving it, but Steven Sims was driving Hooked as Jacob already stated.
AllMonster ooh
I need to drive one before I die
+goodolbronco Definitely on our bucket list too. One of these days haha
Same here!!
Which truck is this?
Hooked.
The starter do the hardest work
definitely a lot of complicated parts on the trucks

Is this at an event?
+IOS Gamer This was at the 2015 Thompson Metal Monster Truck Madness event at Bristol Motor Speedway. We've got other videos from this event on our channel.
Was this on top of his helmet?
+Themightykasey Did u watch the whole video? facepalm
+Themightykasey We mounted one of the newer GoPro Session models to the front of Steven's helmet with one of the 3M Stick Mounts and a GoPro helmet mount. Something we'd really like to try again over the summer.
awesome
My uncle is the driver of dragon
Damn the RPM gauge goes to 10k rpm!
Old v10 f1 cars from the early 2000s and late 90s Rev to 17k while modern V6 F1 cars Rev to 13k
Wait so you have to drive a monster truck with one hand and his other hand is like pressing a button1:43
Left hand on the steering wheel controlling the front wheels, right hand on a toggle switch controlling the rear wheels
There a lot quieter on the inside
BRUTAL AS FUCK!!!!
I wish the camera was on the top of his helmet and not towards the bottom, be easier to see out the windshield
for next time!
what is the truck called
Travis Saylor Hooked.
I wish he would've done a donut I wanted to see what it looked like haha
my uncle has one of those and he is teaching me how to drive it
Lucky
How much you want for it
My lower back hurts 🤣
My dad raced monster trucks
this is steven sims right?
Yup. This is Steven driving Hooked last year in Bristol before he moved into Pirate's Curse with Monster Jam.
SSSSSICK!!!!
Monster truck
yes, yes it is.
Omg is junp monter trukes very gody
your what hurts?
That bottle disapeared lol.
Twinkie Truck PB /isaacankrom115 We wondered if anyone would catch that. Good eye.
+AllMonstervideos can you guys make more vids like this?
+Twinkie Truck PB /isaacankrom115 what part of the video?
+MonsterJam Live2016 If you look closely in the very beginning of the video there's a water bottle rolling around at Steven's feet. It rolled out somewhere around the start of his qualifying pass.
+Emanuel Allen We hope to when we can. Not every show has the opportunity for us to do so but we will try to do more this summer.
you can't see
I can't drive one because it's too loud inside
actually inside the truck they got a plastic wall behind the driver to tune down the loudness
and all the drivers wear ear plugs in their ears
There not that loud
Saucy Tez it won't be that loud they have ear protection
Poor baby
