Just imagine how many of the old pianos have ended up in landfills over the years. Such a waste of beautifully crafted wood parts that you, Dave, have proven can be repurposed into gorgeous, functional shop furniture. The hardware alone would be worth the time it takes to deconstruct one of these classic beauties to repurpose them in other projects. I'm a big proponent of repurposing, and I have bins full of scrap hardware, metal, different woods, etc. that I incorporate into my projects. Nothing this ambitious yet, but you are very inspiring. Your eye for detail is incredible! Can't wait until the next video!!
Thank you very much and I could not agree with you more! It’s a shame to waste pieces of history even if they no longer serve their original purpose. These old pianos are certainly a reflection of the skills the craftsman had 100 years ago and the wood is near impossible to find today. Thank you for watching!
Thank you very much, lot of work left to do and some great pieces still to add that I haven’t shown yet. It’s been a joy to get these old pieces used up. Thanks for watching!
I’ve only been doing this a little less than a year. It’s growing and I’ll keep making these as long as people keep watching! I really enjoy the process and I love reading the comments! Thanks for watching!
I can’t wait to see it full of tools myself! I’ve made this one a lot larger that my other to allow room for expansion. I doubt I’ll be able to fill it right away, but I’m sure I won’t have any trouble find tools to fill up in the coming years! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for watching, it’s a joy to use these old hand tools on wood of the same vintage! I guess you could say the tools are building their own home! Thanks for watching!
Great video and build Dave, I love repurposing old beautiful wood and putting it back to good use. This is the project of all projects for ‘I’ll use that piece for something one day’
I’m envious of this beautiful build! When I was a kid, we got rid of an old family piano, and now I wish we had kept it.😭 All joking aside, this project is turning out wonderfully! By the way, the cherry tote and knob you made for my No. 6 are working tremendously. It’s such a pleasure to use (and admire), haha!
Good to hear the tote and knob are working well for you! Have they darkened a lot? This has been a very rewarding build and I have so many ideas for the rest, I really enjoy sharing this with you guys! It’s a blast! Thanks for watching!
I used to have a shop full of power tools but in the last 10 years I’ve whittled them down and use the hand tools more and more. Honestly it’s a lore enjoyable and rewarding experience using you hands! Thanks for watching!
@@DaveCorinth Though shorter than yours (only 2-3 years) this echos my experience. Started off thinking I need lots of power tools and then got into hand tools and found them more satisfying to use. And of course I appreciated the drop in noise and dust levels that resulted. Still a place for power tools - it's all about getting the balance right. Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you very much, it’s been a lot of fun reusing those old parts, and it will free up some space! Hand cut dovetails coming up in the next video, i hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!
What a wonderful project. That wood is just stunning - I can't imagine what it looks like in person. The story of the walnut - my goodness. I guess I can call myself a woodworker now as I also have some sentimental wood in my stash that was a gift from a friend - saving it for a special project when I know I won't waste it or ruin it. Could be years from now, ha! Thanks again for taking us along - can't wait till the next installment.
My two favorite woods are mahogany and walnut. Thankfully I had a great grandfather with a huge walnut tree. I’ve built a lot of furniture out of that walnut over the years and keep every scrap. Thank you for watching!
This is one of those times when hoarding pays off! I tend to keep a lot of things and of course with the thought that, I could use it one day. Thankfully that day has come! Thanks for watching!
Absolutely loving this project !! Very inspiring, I'm moving house soon gonna have to have a go at making my own, looking forward to the next installment !!
Its been fun to see it come together, and this stage was very rewarding as well as a bit of a challenge. Still lots of little parts from that piano as well as other items I’ve been saving up over the years that will be going on soon. Thanks for watching!
@@DaveCorinth Really interesting stuff Dave ! I bet shifting those pianos was a tricky business, I know that from experience !! keep up the good work mate, can't wait to see what parts you use next !!!
Awesome stuff lad..... I'm mostly a turner now, but before that it was all hand tool work. Really enjoyed this, made me want to make a tool cabinet 😂 ya got a new Sub from me 😁
Thanks for the sub, I greatly appreciate it! Making a tool cabinet is really fun, you can let you mind run a little wild with ideas of how to hold them! Thanks for watching!
@DaveCorinth last one I built was cheap Scots Pine, frame and panel with Sapele veneered panels. Scots Pine is the standard joinery timber here in Ireland, and Sapele is the second most common hardwood next to Beech..... So naturally I'd like to make a nicer one, with nicer woods, you've inspired me lad 😁 I might put the turning on hold and go back to some hand tool work 🤙😂
Old pianos are a great source of wood, I look for those that are beyond restoration at least as a musical instrument. I have a great deal of respect for these old pianos but I hate to see them just thrown away! Thanks for watching!
It's coming along nicely. One day soon I hope to have wall space to build something like this. Are you going to put glass in the shadow box now that it opens?
I don’t think I’m going to put glass in the door, although it would look good with gold leave lettering on the glass, and I haven’t counted it out as of yet! Thanks for watching!
She told me it was the first time she had seen a chainsaw and it scared her! I remember her lemonade quite well and those Germans must have enjoyed the cool drink! Thanks for watching!
My wife often tells me I need help as well! I tell her I could have worse hobbies! And yes it’s a bit punishing using those old screws at times at least on the forearms. Thanks for watching!

This video was: surprise after surprise!! This is going to be a Grand tribute to the piano and the people who built them!
Thank you very much…. I intend to do just that. Honor those who built the piano originally. Thank you for watching!
Wow! This is an amazing build! It's gorgeous Dave. 👍

Great imagination on how to utilize the pieces you have and make them work together. Great work.
Thank you it’s a lot of fun, like working a large puzzle only you have to cut the pieces to make them fit perfectly! Thanks for watching!

Well done Dave,
It looks so good. Congratulations.
Enjoying the build.
I am really enjoying building it! It’s nice to use up my hoarding pile as well! Thanks for watching!
All I can say for now is WOW, I love reusing anything I can, I learned to hanh cut dove tails on old pallet wood and made sm boxes.

Hi Dave, greetings from The Netherlands. You're doing a great job repurposing this old piano. The end result is going to be great I'm sure.

Thanks for posting these videos! I have learned a ton from you and I appreciate it very much.
I appreciate you watching and of course I am glad I could be helpful! Thanks for watching!

Thank you! It’s a lot of fun to dig through all the old pieces I’ve saved and finally get to use them up! Thanks for watching!
Going to be great
Beautiful case, love the concept. I always thought fishtail chisels were just for pairing and not for striking?
I strike mine, the Lie-Nielsen fishtails have hornbeam handles and can take the abuse, not sure if I’m supposed to but it works! Thanks for watching.

The loud thumping sound you hear is me kicking my self in the ass for throwing away an old upright piano thirty years ago! Live and learn.
Old pianos are a great source of wood, I look for those that are beyond restoration at least as a musical instrument. I have a great deal of respect for these old pianos but I hate to see them just thrown away! Thanks for watching!
The sound board had pulled away and couldn’t be tuned.
It's coming along nicely. One day soon I hope to have wall space to build something like this. Are you going to put glass in the shadow box now that it opens?

I heard the same stories from my grandma too. She said all those Germans were hard workers.
She told me it was the first time she had seen a chainsaw and it scared her! I remember her lemonade quite well and those Germans must have enjoyed the cool drink! Thanks for watching!
I was looking forward to this video. Using these old screws proves that you are a machoistic. You may need to eek professional help!
