I went thru Arthur's Pass forty years ago on the train: it blew my mind, the mountains were incredible! I've always wished that we had mountains this high here in Australia.
As a kiwi living in Brizzy, we have Mt Nebo, Tamborine, Cootha, etc. Even Australia's highest mountain is 1000 feet shorter than Mt Cook. You want to see Mountains head to NZ.😂 Love your content.❤
What having the Great barrier reef, a 1000 tropical islands and the oldest tropical rainforrest isn't enough in your state. Geeez if yiu you want mountains take a boat to New Guinea, their mountains are taller than NZ. And its technically part of the Australian continent.

Nice as the Arthur’s Pass road trip is, there are more spectacular ones further south. Haast Pass, which crosses the Southern Alps and takes you into Central Otago, and the road to Milford Sound are two examples

leftovers of Thanksgiving are much better around our house. Our secret ingredient in our turkey dressing is christian bros label cream sherry. giving it time to mature in the refridgerator makes delicious dressing, and added to san francisco sourdough toast it's the best way to enjoy our leftovers.

But we took our daughter to the North Island in 2017 as an end of school year adventure. it was at exactly this time of year. School holidays have just started in NZ and Aus. So that’s another reason you’’re seeing a ramp-up in the number of tourists.
Tasmania doesn't even feel like Australia (at least to me). It's like flying into another country. I'm going to be there next week and can't wait to see it in Summer, not that we have much of a summer this year so far.
Did NZ this last July. Very much agree on the politeness of the NZ drivers. I'm sure you are heading to Lake Tekapo and then the Hooker Valley Track. Enjoy the trip and stop at the Fairlie Bakehouse for some pies and coffee.
Finishing up a 2 week trip in Queenstown now. Agree about the drivers, very friendly and chill. But I've been shocked how fast they feel comfortable taking some curves. Makes me feel like a granny driving

I once flew from Calgary to Toronto to London to Bangkok to Saigon all in one go. From memory I had a 5hr stopover in Toronto, 5hrs in Heathrow and 3hrs in Bangkok. Walking out of the airport building into a wall of people and humidity just smashed me when I arrived in Ho Chi Minh City.
I agree with the turkey leftovers. I don't actually eat the cranberry sauce with dinner but save it for sandwiches! Turkey, cranberry, stuffing, and mayo and black pepper. I do all this in October and then again at Christmas! Happy Travels

Tia if the sirens go, yes, it's nearly always summoning volunteer firemen to help a car crash situation, fire, or similar. (I've heard it used for plane and ship issues too and if a walker got stuck or lost somewhere unusual, for instance). In some small places someone will get out with a megaphone and direct locals to help if necessary. It's how the community coordinates pulling together. So not something to be scared of, as it's about fixing a problem, but I totally agree. It's a heck of a sound. If you hear it on the road just be alert to possible road hazards. The sole exceptional purpose for that siren is if you're coastal and it's a tsunami (_extremely_ unlikely unless there's been a very big quake) in which case you'd get a phone alert to go with the siren too. The phone will vibrate quite hard and go off with a loud tone. Plus people would be spreading the word as well, it'll be on tele and the radio and social media for civil defence. Locals would be approaching you to get you somewhere safe. So unless these things are happening, you can just spare a thought for the people being helped or suppose it's a test. We have tests much more regularly than anything else 😅 With quakes, you will get an alert a few minutes ahead on your phone if it's significant, but no siren. We do have lots of quakes, the thing to do is shelter in a doorway or under something very strong, like a sturdy table. If it's not big, people pause for the duration then carry on. Perhaps with eye rolling. If in a car, of course, just pull over, as safely as possible, maybe jam on your hazard lights in case some egg behind you tries to keep moving. You're most likely to experience no issues while here. I hope understanding what to expect from sirens and alarms takes the fear out of it. ❤ xx. Did the trip Greymouth to Christchurch by train once. Which included traveling in a long tunnel through a mountain. Whether by road or by rail the scenery is spectacular.

Oh that test siren! I was in that town on the North island, I forget the name, but it has that big Lord of the Rings mural on the side of the old cinema. In the loo in the middle of the roads, sitting down trying to do some business, when that went off! I thought earthquake or tsunami 😂 and got off there real quick! Before doing my business 😂

You are in Australia and New Zealand. McDonald’s fries in Australia/nz have 3 ingredients. Potato, oil and salt. In USA their fries have anywhere from 20 to 38 ingredients. Same thing their patties i. Australia and New Zealand it’s beef… plus oil and salt when cooked. In USA it’s crazy number of ingredients. My point is in Australia and New Zealand even McDonald’s can get to their roots cos they’re not such big markets that special preservatives and stuff have to be added. Australia and New Zealand McDonald’s food is made how they wish they could make it in USA, but can’t. Due to market size. And the requirement for preservatives. Same goes for others like Burger King (hungry jacks). I imagine in USA all these big fast food companies would love to use fewer preservatives and stuff but they can’t in USA due to market size. We are just lucky in Australia and New Zealand with our availability of fresh clean ingredients available year round at good wholesale prices to satisfy these fast food companies to do what they would do in USA if only they could.

Oh wow, the scenery just gets better and better. Love the snow capped mountains and the huge boulders strewn about. Reminds me a lot of the area around the Bald Rock National Park near Tenterfield NSW, which has the largest granite monolith in the Southern Hemisphere. (If you happen to like Big things 🙂) Anyway, I digress, I think it's great to see you doing some crotchet Tia as it keeps these skills alive, so well done!! It's pretty special that you will have some family with you for the rest of your NZ journey. Here in my locality they start with Christmas items in September/October and I think its way too early. By the time Christmas comes, you are kind of over it. Travel safe ❤
Wait until you get to Queenstown/Arrowtown/Wanaka/Cardrona (all in a loop you can do in an hour). That's pinnacle New Zealand. I hope your Milford Sound weather is great, because that drive should definitely be a wonder of the world, no exaggeration.

Mount Olympus is where the scene with the crebain crows was filmed, which is not far from Arthur's Pass where you guys are. So I'd expect the rocks look familiar because they're probably the same kind found there. 😄
In regards to some things being cheaper in NZ, I expect a lot of that might have to do with there being less distance for domestically produced goods to travel compared to somewhere like the US. There's also a heavy degree of regional specialisation to a lot of raw produce and related secondary processing, which helps with labour and transport efficiency though also has the downside of all your eggs being in a single basket that can get wiped out by one poorly timed cyclone (RIP Hawke's Bay orchards, and Pukekohe onions and potatos, the latter of which is why the price of frozen chips and hot chips have skyrocketed recently, because the two major suppliers have been running out of potatos). 😥 On the other hand, keep in mind that pricing for produce in NZ is very seasonal, so while things like capsicum and brocolli are rather cheap at the moment, their prices will soar once they go out of season and there's less supply or we have to rely more on imported goods. Brocolli can get up to NZ$4 a head and capsicum regularly hits NZ$6 each, so the smart thing to do is join us Kiwis in making the most of cheaper produce while it's around and then scrounging at the farmer's market or changing your diet once things go out of season and the price starts climbing. And with that in mind, make sure you buy all the fresh strawberries you desire over the summer, because they're one thing we don't really import out of season so you'll have a hard time finding them otherwise even at an astronomical price. 🙏 Oh and a pro tip for strawberries: don't bother buying them in the week leading up to Christmas unless you need them for something special, because there's usually a large price spike before Christmas due to basically every Kiwi in the country buying them to decorate our Xmas pavlovas. So if you're not planning a Xmas pav and just wanting to treat yourself to some fresh strawberries, then just wait until after Xmas when the price will go down, sometimes even on sale if the supermarket has an (accidental or even deliberate) oversupply. 😉
Made me kind of happy sad seeing Arthur's Pass in this one. Crossing it was the first day of my honeymoon back in 2010. So many good memories, which ended in divorce this year. Not meaning to be a downer, but live it up while you're young and unencumbered guys. And I look forward to the rest of the NZ videos.

You’re right re Maccas in that at least you can be anywhere and drive through for coffee. McCafe was created in 1993 in Melbourne from a frustration of customers to get consistent, drinkable espresso based coffee. It was a Melbourne only thing until 1997 when it expanded to other Aussie cities. A US trial McCafe finally opened in Chicago in 2001 before slowly expanding US wide roughly a decade after knowing they had significant experience and learnings in the tough Aussie market. It does change depending on the area of the US. We’re from AZ which is pretty middle-of-the-road in terms of cost. It would be less expensive in the Midwest or Southern States.

Pak n save is almost the cheapest supermarket of the lot. Warehouse often has cheaper groceries but they are limited in what they offer.

You are in Australia and New Zealand. McDonald’s fries in Australia/nz have 3 ingredients. Potato, oil and salt. In USA their fries have anywhere from 20 to 38 ingredients. Same thing their patties i. Australia and New Zealand it’s beef… plus oil and salt when cooked. In USA it’s crazy number of ingredients. My point is in Australia and New Zealand even McDonald’s can get to their roots cos they’re not such big markets that special preservatives and stuff have to be added. Australia and New Zealand McDonald’s food is made how they wish they could make it in USA, but can’t. Due to market size. And the requirement for preservatives. Same goes for others like Burger King (hungry jacks). I imagine in USA all these big fast food companies would love to use fewer preservatives and stuff but they can’t in USA due to market size. We are just lucky in Australia and New Zealand with our availability of fresh clean ingredients available year round at good wholesale prices to satisfy these fast food companies to do what they would do in USA if only they could.

Another great video guys! I was blown away last week as I work for Mazda in Australia and seeing a write up about you guys and blueberry. I watch every episode so seeing you pop up on the main Mazda page at work made my day. Ps I have a 2010 bt50 Ute in the same color as blueberry had it since new and touch wood still hasn't missed a beat, must be the color. Safe travels.

Oh wow, the scenery just gets better and better. Love the snow capped mountains and the huge boulders strewn about. Reminds me a lot of the area around the Bald Rock National Park near Tenterfield NSW, which has the largest granite monolith in the Southern Hemisphere. (If you happen to like Big things 🙂)
Anyway, I digress, I think it's great to see you doing some crotchet Tia as it keeps these skills alive, so well done!! It's pretty special that you will have some family with you for the rest of your NZ journey.
Here in my locality they start with Christmas items in September/October and I think its way too early. By the time Christmas comes, you are kind of over it. Travel safe ❤

Mount Olympus is where the scene with the crebain crows was filmed, which is not far from Arthur's Pass where you guys are. So I'd expect the rocks look familiar because they're probably the same kind found there. 😄
In regards to some things being cheaper in NZ, I expect a lot of that might have to do with there being less distance for domestically produced goods to travel compared to somewhere like the US. There's also a heavy degree of regional specialisation to a lot of raw produce and related secondary processing, which helps with labour and transport efficiency though also has the downside of all your eggs being in a single basket that can get wiped out by one poorly timed cyclone (RIP Hawke's Bay orchards, and Pukekohe onions and potatos, the latter of which is why the price of frozen chips and hot chips have skyrocketed recently, because the two major suppliers have been running out of potatos). 😥
On the other hand, keep in mind that pricing for produce in NZ is very seasonal, so while things like capsicum and brocolli are rather cheap at the moment, their prices will soar once they go out of season and there's less supply or we have to rely more on imported goods. Brocolli can get up to NZ$4 a head and capsicum regularly hits NZ$6 each, so the smart thing to do is join us Kiwis in making the most of cheaper produce while it's around and then scrounging at the farmer's market or changing your diet once things go out of season and the price starts climbing. And with that in mind, make sure you buy all the fresh strawberries you desire over the summer, because they're one thing we don't really import out of season so you'll have a hard time finding them otherwise even at an astronomical price. 🙏
Oh and a pro tip for strawberries: don't bother buying them in the week leading up to Christmas unless you need them for something special, because there's usually a large price spike before Christmas due to basically every Kiwi in the country buying them to decorate our Xmas pavlovas. So if you're not planning a Xmas pav and just wanting to treat yourself to some fresh strawberries, then just wait until after Xmas when the price will go down, sometimes even on sale if the supermarket has an (accidental or even deliberate) oversupply. 😉
Made me kind of happy sad seeing Arthur's Pass in this one. Crossing it was the first day of my honeymoon back in 2010. So many good memories, which ended in divorce this year.

It does change depending on the area of the US. We’re from AZ which is pretty middle-of-the-road in terms of cost.
It would be less expensive in the Midwest or Southern States.
