We're back with Mike Rivera to show you how to replace the front brake calipers, pads and rotors on a 1993 Volvo 940 Turbo.
The front brakes are almost always the first to fail on any car, since they are responsible for absorbing most of the braking force when you want to stop. Replacing them is no difficult task, and with this video, you'll be back on the road in no time.

Please do more early 90's era videos! Water pump, timing belt, steering, shocks and coils etc! This video was very helpful.
1990 740 Turbo.
Best cars ever manufactured
Except W123 Benz
You'll want to use synthetic brake grease for the sliding bolts.
Thanks so much! This answered a few questions about the rotor removal. Appreciate the effort it takes to post a quality video.
According to the haynes 1982/1991 Manual (No 1258) the torque wrench settings for the 740, 940 are: Front Caliper bracket Screws 100Nm 74 lbf ft.
Volvo says you must replace those M10 bolts as they are torque-to-yield. Volvo front pads always come with new bolts.
Glad you caught this. These guys missed several other items as well. Example, Torque all the hardware.
Im in Nova Scotia and I can also confirm that rust is a big ass problem
Should have used a torque wrench.
Very true!

"The front breaks are most likely to fail first on any car" well...
My front breaks are made by gods and my rear breakes fuck up all the time, although im now doing some front maintenance
Hi, I have a 1988 740 GLE. I'm not sure if I need the 10.25" or 11.25" front rotors. How can I tell?
Nicola White The easiest way is just to measure through your wheel, a full inch difference is generally pretty easy to see. Hope that helps.
FCP Euro thanks that makes sense. I did so and got my answer. 10.25 it is!
Thanks for this video guys. Have to do my wifes brakes so this helped a ton.
And don't forget the lube
"Get the kid & DIY"....do I do it myself or will the kid do it? But nice informative video...thanks for that.
FCP Euro Greate repair videos for my Volvo 940 2.3 turbo 1995 mod !! thanx
Nicely done- not to be a stickler but there is no way to inspect those rubber brake lines when they have stainless wire over them- the stainless just stops them from bulging too much when the rubber is bad. Technically, Federal law in the US says the rubber lines must have correct markings and NOT be covered or obscured so this style line is not legal to use on any US motor vehicle. Also, because the line can NOT be inspected- it would be prudent to replace it with a DOT approved (legal) style. I've had way to many stainless clad lines leak and blow... and in this application it can be a big problem-- worse, if you have an accident and the insurance company faults your illegal equipment for it- and they will try to do so.
so dont BE a stickler!!! thats what you are lol,,, they know what they do...
9:35 Grease between the pad and the shim will ensure no brake squealing. That's why others do it. Regards.
Great video. Thank you. I have a 1987 760 turbo.
Are you supposed to use a specific grease for the sliding bolts, or will caliper grease be fine?
Do the caliber retaing bolts get lube??
What about the brake fluid? If you remove the line from the caliper, doesn't the fluid leak out? Was the fluid removed first somehow?
Hello John, brake fluid will leak out once the brake line is removed. It looks like the fluid was drained out during the install.
wow those rotors you took off look way better then the ones on my 940
Great video man thanks
How many parts cost?
So satisfying
I can't get the metal clip things on the pads to line up with the holes on the calipers, could you think of any reason why that would be?
You shouldn't have any issues with them, I would double check that they are aligned correctly.
+Jason Van Gorden I did just that, I had to bend the spring things a little to get them to fit but all is good now
