  • In this video, we go to the grocery store to do what will be the first part of provisioning our boat in the Bahamas. We shop for all our protein and our goal is to stock the freezer! Soon we will be leaving Nassau and continuing to move south!

Smart idea to break up the provisioning. Back in my younger days I had a buddy who owned a 30' Catalina. We sailed that thing all over the place and took her far and beyond what she was designed for. Sill alive but there were times when we didn't know if were were going to make it out alive. Open ocean is no place for a small boat like that. Anyway we had a 2 burner LP gas stove with a dinky oven we also installed a small microwave. We had jerry cans of fresh water and diesel fuel strapped to the deck. Our stores load consisted of a lot of premade meals that we could either microwave or just add boiling water. No refrigerator, generator, or water maker. Lots of saltwater baths. I'd have to say that was probably one of the best years of my life living wild, and free. Would probably still be there if the internet was a thing back then and RUclips was around. Great way to make money if ya have a good channel. We didn't need much to survive. Think that year my buddy and I lived pretty good of a $10,000 sailing kitty.

Buy a portable freezer like an ICECO or your choice. Then before you leave for the Bahamas vaccuum pack all the meat you can get. I could easily pack 60 lbs in my portable. A larger size 72+ lbs is no problem. I also have another freezer that makes ice for a cooler we use as a fridge, we pack about 100lbs in it. We have a Catalina 30 and 6 kids....vaccuum pack your dry goods too as it saves a ton of space. We can get 3 months of food onboard by packing it tiiiiiiiigggghhhht!

I thought you were going to say we are getting low on protein, then were going to say we are going on a mission to slay some fish 😀.
Then grab the pole spear 🤘

I am a supporter of the two of you in your channel. There are a lot of people that are starting these new channels and financially, I don’t understand how it’s so possible.

Going in August ‘23, have 2 bareboat catamarans with 22 people. Will be checking out all of your provisioning locations on Nassau. Getting there on Wednesday and loading the ship on Saturday. Plan on breaking up the shopping.

Great video guys! Courtney and I have a few solutions for provisioning. We went to the exact same grocery store you guys did. For that trip, we have a cheap folding beach cart. We rolled it down and loaded up on provisions, and didn't have to skip out on heavy stuff! We also bought a cheap, insulated food delivery bag. It was rated as able to hold "6 pizzas" so it can hold a lot of groceries and keep them cold! And then we finally have cheap tiny folding ebikes for those really long trips.
Before we loaded up for Bahamas, we rented a car for 1 day in West Palm and spent 12 hours provisioning. We then anchor really close to a dinghy dock and then ferry provisions back and forth. I have celiac, so I have to load up on gluten free items. Which in provisioning terms means: Hitting up at least 5 walmarts to find enough stock :). But we're still loaded with provisions 4 months after!

Wow! We’ve been in the Bahamas the last 2 winters but never went to Nassau. That store is amazing - SO not like most of the rest of the Bahamas!! That looks easy to provision at! Very cool and thanks for the glimpse into Nassau!

Nassau has its pros and cons just like most cities. Make sure to say hi if you see us on the water!

I get almost all of my protein from fish and lobster while in the Bahamas. To save on freezer space, I stocked up on a metric ton of canned chicken and beef fajita strips in cans from Walmart in Florida before leaving.
Good call on using a vacuum sealer when storing protein in the freezer. You can get steaks and fish to last 8 months that way no problem.

Thanks for sharing. The Harbour Club Hotel and Marina is a great deal, $2/foot. They are very friendly and welcoming. Water is a fixed $6/day. Electric is metered. It also has a nice restaurant. The laundry requires tokens from the office for $3/load wash or dry. You will want to shower on your boat. It is right across the street from the shopping center with Solomon's. Solomon's Fresh Market is a very nice store. Their produce section is great. We just returned from the Exumas via last stop of Venice to Pensacola, 329 NM and 54 hours. We were welcomed back with a Blue Angels welcome home practice show. Best, Don and Cassie, SV Gypsea

Enjoy now. The stores get a lot smaller and the prices double as you. get south. When you get to France (St Martin, St Barths, Guadalupe) some things get cheap and others are not available.

@@adventurecrews We used as few cans as we could. Since the islands are close we tried to buy as much fresh as we could or frozen, but we were space limited in the freezer. Shopping is always an adventure.

We have a large dedicated freezer and stock up at Costco before crossing. If I fly back to states I always carry Yeti on the plane. Way too expensive to buy meat in Bahamas.

Carryon sized Yeti. If my wife flies with me we bring two. That’s a lot of steaks.
