"Barn-find Porsche 356" - Matt Hummel

- Опубликовано: 8 фев 2025
- Matt Hummel's love for vintage automobiles has led him to many interesting places, but no car has captured his imagination quite like his 1956 Porsche 356. Follow along as Matt attempts his most ambition adventure, going 20-miles off-road from Joshua Tree to Big Bear in a 60 year old classic.
After having the dilapidated Porsche for over a year, he decided to get it running in its current condition and hit the road. Since then, he hasn't looked back.
Much of California has been tamed by this NorCal barn-find, but one of the places he has yet to conquer is the 4x4 OHV trail from Yucca Valley to Big Bear, Burns Canyon Trail (2N02). That's all about to change as he attempts to complete the 20+mile off-road trail in his 60-year-old vintage sports car from Stuttgart.

Matt is showing the virtues of the fabulous torsion bar suspension. Just like a beetle it will go anywhere. Although this is thoroughly pissing off 356 enthusiasts somebody had to show you how tough these little hand made gems are.
It shouldn't, they rallied the hell out of them.
Love the 356 with quite a passion and seeing one in this condition isn't that painful.
Some people are out there using GT3 RS in rally when they're track weapons; it goes to show that no matter if it's a modern 911 or those old 356s, they can do anything you want them to do. Porsche is Porsche, they're a canvas, you do whatever you want to them, it's your car at the end of the day.
Bravo to one of the best films I've ever watched in my life. So many 'collectors' of cars bubble wrap them and hide them away in their cocoons, never to seen or used, hoping to make it safely to the next stingy owner. But here we have a young man who has figured it all out. Cars were meant to be driven, enjoyed, loved and, most importantly, used to create unforgettable memories. After all, we can't take the cars with us. Thank you for this film.
People want fresh cars so they work well and have few to no problems but that puts the value up. And then they are too scared to use them properly in fear of “devaluing” the car when the real value comes from the memories made in that vehicle
It’s January of 2025, nearly 3:00 am and I have the flu.
Matt, your video has done me more good than you can imagine. Thank you. You truly are an inspiration!
It's April 9, 2020 and the world is on fire with the CoronaVirus and we are all in quarantine. Watching this video got me out of my depression and made me feel good about life again. Two thumbs up!
At first i thought 23 minutes was too much but it just flew away. Absolutely stunning work!
+Emre Akcan Some stories are worth telling at length! Hummel's is one that we thought was worth an extended look. Glad you enjoyed it!
Couldn't agree more, a very 'different' take on how to treat a museum piece like this and a different take on life in general too. Great direction.
Cool car yes, museum piece, not by a long shot.
chefgiovanni
I think he means museum piece as the history of how this 356 has been used and enjoyed, used how it was ment to be, where it's been driven and capable of, out of the common car show, concourse type car that lives parked in a garage!!! Tons of money restoring them to then stare at them and afraid to get some scratches is pathedic unless you are an investor and have a collection of 10 cars or more to sell later at a profit!
Yeah that is one way of looking at it. It is cool to see it going off rod and being driven. I heard of a few of them Concourse 356 cars selling for 500k recently.
This is one of the coolest, most passionately made videos I've seen in a long time. Kudos!
Dude you are a champion. Your story put me in a very good mood - I admire your attitude towards your 356 ALOT
This dude is my hero.
+Taylor Ray a real Desert Outlaw!
My hero too! He mentions giving the car a purpose by taking it out of the barn and then maybe it gives you a purpose. True, and well said.
"Maybe the person needed to be taken out of the barn more than the car did"
This is why I love cars. They give meaning to life.
this is everything I love about older Porches and German cars... love it.
I wish I could smack the "Like" button 100,000,000,000,000 times. Congrats sir, you are living the life. Thank you for sharing.
That has to be one of the absolute best videos I've watched... Amazing! We have a '58 A Cab and it is really weird how you feel like that when you drive it. It captivates your sole and take you to a place you have never been. You want to go off and tour the whole world with it. It really is that good. If I was allowed only one possession in life, it would be that car. ...and I would be the happiest person ever! Thanks so much for such a special video! Franny
🙌🏼 it’s always amazing how quickly they get under your skin and into your soul! - Jeremy
I love that I keep seeing people using these old machines. They were built in a time where you had a good chance of ending up on a rough road from time to time, so they can take it. Always puts a smile on my face to see someone using their car and not putting it under a glass bell for ages
Wow Matt and his Porsche is like a one man burning man wherever they go.
Love everything about this - Living in the moment in your old porsche.... You're doing it right Matt! Very well made.
The essence of the 356 is so eloquently captured by these visuals of it intimately in action, making tracks, plying the trail. Reminds me of the feeling I got playing with my matchboxes in the dirt.
this is not a car story it's a love story......and I'm soooo happy for this amazing Porsche and his owner
that was really cool, grass roots earthy car guy story, a true man and his machine story with simplicity and purpose.
"This car and I started driving everywhere together" is a line that has come to mind dozens (or maybe hundreds) of times since I first watched this video about 5 years ago. Each time I remember, it reconnects me to my unique fascinations and the parts of myself that exist independent of any desire for status or acceptance from society. Thanks Matt for sharing some of your perspectives/interests/adventures, and Jeremy for crafting such an eloquent window to experience his story.
More people should adopt the spirit of exploration and discovery and appreciation of the twists and turns of life and self. Bravo..dude...great stuff
Off-roading in a Porsche...gotta love it!
Fantastic ! I thoroughly enjoyed this (and I will be watching it again). I've seen several 356 videos in the last couple days and I thought I didnt wanna see anymore , but I'm glad I did. That Porsche is absolutely beautiful. I had a Beetle that wasnt perfect (to say the least) and I loved it . I don't like when somebody gets a "barn find", then totally restores it 'till it ends up shining like a mirror . I always feel they ruined it. This really got me excited !
This guy and his Porsche and just in general this channel are making me want to buy an old VW bug like I wanted to in high school (pre 67) and just drive it. I don't want a restored one, give me one with some patina and I'll be happy....this guy is loving life and his love for his Porsche is beautiful. I hope to be like him some day soon
I'm so glad Matt does what he does but I can't help but feel envious that he got into classic P-cars before the explosion in value. as someone who's grown up with them becoming pricier seemingly by the day, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to afford one, even in barnfind condition, so I'm grateful Matt shares his experiences with his online.
loved the video, excellent work!
I love this video and this Porsche! Matt is an inspiration to me! Most Porsche owners keep their cars in the garage and seldom drive them. I'm fortunate to own one (my dream car) and drive it every day! I want to enjoy it, and I do! I keep watching this video over and over! It makes me happy!
Wow Ive wanted to find a Porsche movie like this & its so well made & so much fun. Thanks guys a truly heart warming film :-)
What a great story, and so well told! The man, the machines, and the gloriously messy way he loves them! Wow. Bravo, y'all! Bravo!
What a fantastic video, enjoyed it so much!!
Terrific work! Inspiring and fascinating at the same time. I came here as a Porsche owner expecting to see a short film about a classic Porsche. What I found was so much more. I'm hooked.
What a superb movie
Matt is living life to the fullest. I envy that.
You can do it too!
@@jamesdunn9714 I wish I could, but I can't. I am married, baby is on the way soon. How can I enjoy going for long drives in my bug when I have so many damn responsibilities at home. Or if my wife comes along, then it ain't the same as going solo, or having a buddy. When I try to work on it in the garage, she comes out and bugs me. I wish I was single. My old bug days of fun and carefree are long gone. Is this guy single I wonder ? Seems like single guys get to live the best. My life stopped at 37
@@bugnut82 Marriage can be a challenge. Matt is single as am I. Sometimes I just wander off usually on a motorcycle with no particular destination in mind.
This is one of the BEST videos I have seen about Three Five Six's.
Matt should be Porsche Driver of the Year.
Now I miss my Three Five Six even more.
Holy crap. That was so cool. Beautifully shot. Great message. Sweet car.
Thanks Matt, great segment. My father had one when I was a toddler. I still ahve pics of my sister and I in it.
Killer stuff guys. Matt's Petrolicious piece is one of my favorites that they've done and his story definitely lends itself to this extended format. I'm really looking forward to what seeing more from you - keep up the great work!
A great story and gets to the essence of why you might own an old car like this .
That is a very nice story, I restored 3 356 a beautiful thing to do
I have a 1971 Karmann Ghia, this is how I drive my car every day...! It’s mechanically perfect, and it is my only car...
Thanks for the video I don’t feel so bad about my Karmann Ghia not being perfectly restored....!
I will watch this again and again and again love the car and the scenery is so lovely.
That was soo cool !!! Excellent story ! Excellent adventure !!! Excellent video !!! Thank you for sharing that !!!
I ride motorcycles and just go sometimes. Camp in odd places and drink beer when the sun goes down. I have newer rides but my ride of choice is a '86 BMW R80RT. I want something older and funky. A friend bought an old Guzzi once for twenty bucks, patina with good mechanics, rode it forever. Purchased at a yard sale. Love this video.
Nice work Matt and Jeremy! I always enjoy this car and Matt's a good dude. Fun to accompany you on this adventure.
saw this dude with his '56 356 on petrolicious. Like this longer video!
Me too, I was looking for another, longer video with him and has porsche ! Awesome !!
I have a 1963 356 Super 90 that's in parts right now. This motivates me to put it back together. All I need is time and a pile of cash!
Wow, absolutely phenomenal story.
It has the vintage futuristic look. Really cool.
I always want a 356 but now I really want one.
That was cool my man , I'm glad you did that video.
Splendid.. added a Porsche 73/914 to my vw warehouse collection. Vintage or nothing. Respect all people. I love it.
"Maybe the person needed to be taken out of the barn more than the car did." Thank you!
Mate..youve got a screw lose..lol that video is the best I've watched in a bloody long time. Well done you!! Narration is well thought of and presented.. Well done. I hope you keep her forever.
Brilliant car, brilliant video, brilliant attitude. Stay with it Matt, keep the faith. Best wishes from the UK.
Great episode!! Classic!!
old 356 is magic,the man,the car !
Excellent video.
This reminds me of my 1953 Bent window coupe, 1500 Normal I bought in Big Sur ( $100... yes one hundred dollars) in 1965. I would go anywhere, anytime.
A stunning film and a beautiful car
Super RAD Hummel! Good work Jeremy, Valkyr & Praemio!
I think i have commented before....but what a great happy video......watching in Leighton Buzzard Bedfordshire UK. Whilst cooking and drinking Brewdog Lost larger (breaking the no alcohol Monday to Friday Rule) after a long day .....the video is like the therapy to unwind to for a few minutes... forget the crappy UK weather all the global unrest.....drift into planet 356 California.....
Feels like this Porsche is alive!
356s are indestructible!
Daily driver and black plates! Love it.
Best video Ive watched in a long time!!!!
Thanks Kody!
An absolutely beautiful car... Thank you for posting...
Truly epic man and machine together in the wild.
this makes me proud to be a car guy
Just...W O W! What an amazing film.
Best video I've seen on RUclips. It spoke to me and let me know I am not alone. I just spent the weekend "adventure driving" on forest roads open only during hunting season in my Mazda Miata NA. It's in mint condition but I'd like the car even if it wasn't. Point is that even though it's mint I'm not afraid to go off road with it. And I have a Chevy C10 truck similar to Matt's too with very Patina'd paint and would hate to paint it. I love the character and the truck has a novel of service records that read more like a diary as the PO wrote not only his service items but his thoughts at the time.
Amazing cinematography...and better story!
Great job; another awesome production!!
Awesome car. Enjoyed the video. The 356 is my dream car.
What a beautiful video, and what an amazing Porsche
Incredible car from such humble beginnings awesome video 👍
This is everything. I'm glad I exist in the same universe as homeslice.
Beautiful film! Great narrative, shots, and Porsche, especially.
Very cool, congrats to all involved... a story that needed to be shared in this car world we live in.
Thanks Jeff! means a lot! 👍🏼
This is a beautiful film. Great work.
Wonderful story beautifully presented.
They look great like an old pair of really cool jeans; and a great piece of sculpture
Well Done Guys !!!
The thumbs down people have to be depressed, hate life or something!
Great video. What a great story. Love that you are enjoying that car and driving it.
Hey I'm Fischer and im 13 years old and my dad had a 1951 356 coupe and I watch your videos all the time and we are looking for another car and I watch your videos at least 2 times a week and love your videos with that awesome 56 Porsche, make a BUNCH more videos!!!!!!!!!!!!'
+Fischer Scheiter we're working on the next one, featuring a Land Rover Defender in the Swiss Alps! Keep up at instagram.com/praemio ! Thanks Fischer!
This video could have been longer. Engaging. You all captured magic here.
I know I've said this before, but this video gives me inspiration.
I had a 1972 targa 911T in Colorado and used to drive it on forest trails, high dirt roads and Jeep trails., Way too much fun.
What an inspiring personand story, great movie and great channel!
Dude, I love it.
Love your vid! Wish I was there!
great story, thanks.
Absolutely brilliant!
Beautifully done.. just the way it should be. Overlanding in a 356 😉
I thought it would be way too long at 23 mins as well. But after watching it 3 times I don't think it's long enough. Beautiful film, and I don't even like cars that much.
Thanks for this. You've made me feel a little better about the giant spider crack I got in the hood of my Alfa Romeo from the shock of hitting the sump guard on an unmarked asphalt hump in a construction zone. I now understand that what mistook for a blemish is actually a character mark. But now I have ground-clearance envy. ;^)
Met Matt in San Diego. Dude is a nut. Great vid, will share. Love it. Beautiful work, guys.
I just saw your video and I am pumped! I have a 59 356A am im currently finishing a 13 year long restoration, I ran it without oil back in 04 and have been scrounging to buy the parts since then, but now it will be ready with new paint and and interior in a few months and I'm going to do exactly what you are doing, paint be damned! I live in calexico ca and know where that road is. I never intended to have it as a trailer queen but i wasnt thinking of using it daily but i used to drive it daily and I will from now on, thanks.
Your vids are the truth bro, production value all over, and dont think I didnt notice the drone shots, if you ever need an intern or assistant im here.
Great story, and great point of view!
So cool that there are car people still around. Not people who want to drive appliances.
Have a good time all the time.
This is such a good video, the first video i have seen on this channel. For a small channel like this, You guys have such good videos, Keep up the good work and i am looking for more videos like this!!!
Perfect, all of it!
This is so inspiring.
