that's correct they have a motorola VHF radio in the truck, and they do use the handset for better monitoring the radio, since the cab of the rig is loud as hell
I'm a firefighter myself, and I don't mind.. We have a large offroad rescue tender that due to it's weight and tires can go a max of 80 Km/h (50mph).. Our motorways are 110 or 130 km/h (70/80 mph) speed limit.. So, it's okay that they overtake us... Especially on the long 20-30 km+ routes.. Otherwise it would make a VERY long congestion
man i love NYC NY i lived there for a year and i loved the city. Hard to get pass traffic sometimes. i dont know about you guys but i got used to it. i suport you all guys in your work. nice video
you know your right.we do just as much as they do.shit i went in to a burning building this week for trainning and they do it all the time so i am proud.
The reason why FDNY Rigs have telephones is because many times, FDNY dispatch will tell them to call their quarters by telephone. Also, the officer plays with the siren due to noise restrictions and to prevent siren hypnotisation often caused by leaving the siren on only 1 type of tone for the entire response time. A long tone ago, FDNY officers simply left the siren on wail before they realised doing this was more effective. Also, these trucks are heavier than European trucks. It takes a long time for one of these engines to reach 70 MPH. Usually, due to the weight, a fire truck in the States will average about 40-50 MPH if the traffic is clear enough.
lol, its not a phone, its simply a radio that is shaped like a phone so that they can hold it to their ears and hear dispatch better. They rarely call their quarters by telephone.
@howwon when we respond on the highway and traffic flows cars are passing by as well. Doesn't matter, rather would be even more dangerous when cars that go 80 to 100 mph all have to slow down to 65 or 70. We let them pass, and as soon as we get into the traffic jam (e.g. caused by MVA) we switch the martin horn on and pass them between two lanes
Unbelievable how ignorant all the other road users are. Not even bothering to pull over. Here in the UK, you see an emergency vehicle you pull over out of the way asap.
Happens in the uk ,especialy on the motorway, a friend of mine who was a Sub officer (yeah proper rank, now retired), informed me that even under blue lights a fire engine is not permitted in the outside lane ,(classed and an HGV) and if they needed ot pass vehickes they should return to the inside or middle lane and not stay in the outside (fast) lane of any motorway,. hence why, vehicles overtake fire engines regularly on the motorway.
@kevinsilverado in some fdny pieces the siren you hear the federal signal pa300 is the Q some newer pieces have the eq2b but you still hear the pa300 in the city
Usually if an engine company has a long run it's because they're second due or being called in on a second alarm. First due response time is five minutes or under.
for those of you that don't know fdny rigs they're bare minimum p.o.s. just pulling out of the fire house bay you have to pin the gas to the floor. and even though it seems like everyone is passing them on the major deegen..thats why they're in the center lane, probably only doing about 55 mph cause thats all it can get up to they just recently got about 80 new engines with a bit more balls.
It really bothers me when I see idiots who take seconds to decide how best to get out of your way. "just move your fucking car!" not a difficult concept. Keep up the good work guys! All of yous are heroes!
@phirephoto im from upstate NY (syracuse) and cars have to stop. in NYC im quite sure its different, you cant stop 3 lanes of traffic. On the highway we're told to drive down the middle or left hand lane, because if your in the middle they can get off to either side faster than only one side.
@AcyclicEarth Anyone correct me if Im wrong, but I've learned they do use modern mobile radios however they use a telephone style handset instead of a regular microphone so the officer can hear the dispatcher better.
@hallcert Not sure what they were running on in this video, but if you pay attention to the audio there is a 3 alarm fire working in Bronx. This means ALL of Bronx units are either tied up or filling in at other houses.
from what Ive been told Q sirens are not allowed in NYC because with all the buildings the drivers would not know which way the siren was coming from with all the echoing going on.
Well they need more than one electric speaker and one horn. They have too much traffic to penetrate to have the audio warning of a brush truck.Just my opinion.I still love all fire apparatus.
@jcsii Sorry! That wasn't what I was implying at all. I was talking about all of the drivers cutting in front of the firetruck and what not. I understand how congested bigger cities are, but people could be more considerate.
Where I live at, in Philly, firefighters drive at a much hastier pace than this, especially if it's midnight into the early morning hours if they use the highways to respond.
@Kingy12321 Are you seriously asking this question? Look how steady the camera is. It is not being held in anyone's hand. This means it is mounted. In a fire truck. Who do you think put it there?
New law here ( Washington state) = major fine for not pulling over and/or criminal charge for interfering with emergency responders. Add dashcam to record license tags....
@TomTheGrom226 Haha. Lol. It's okay I didn't mean to leave ya speechless there. Speaking of fire trucks, I spotted an Engine this morning riding pass me as I stood at the bus stop on my way home. They responded to a local residence near by with with a few Q's and manual wails at about 25mph no smoke/no fire. If I had a camera to upload it, viewers would've been upset like "GO FASTER!"
duh, whats up with all these 'youre so slow'' comments? just think about it, its probably a 40 ton (metric)+, it just takes time to accelerate and brake, you have to be carefull
@mattlovesall all though the video doest say... he is most likely responding to another alarm... when they get a call at location "A" the closest house might be house 1, when they trasmit a second alarm the next closet, house 2 will respond then for every alarm after that they send the next closest and so on
Only a volunteer? Dont say things like that. Volunteers do just as much as the paid guys, you know that. Dont degrade yourself like that. More people need to be like you; be proud!
@krazyjk022 because if the siren is left on continuously an unalert driver might block it out when its on off on off on off on off you recognize it much better
at location 3:29 on your clip there appears to be a taxi cab passing you. Do they run Code 3 also to airports and etc? Duhhhhhhhhh ?????? Other than that, nice and SAFE run guys!
@wnaburgencesante its a break in your radio transmission. basicly your saying im done speaking its your turn to speak now when you say K after a transmission
that's correct they have a motorola VHF radio in the truck, and they do use the handset for better monitoring the radio, since the cab of the rig is loud as hell
some sirens are operated by a foot switch and the changing tones are what catches attention
Oh, and the reason they took so long was because they were part of a 2nd or 3rd alarm response, and other companies were out on other calls.
man theres nothing like responding to a call and all that adrenalin pumping its a great feeling. and im only a volunteer in up state NY
I'm a firefighter myself, and I don't mind..
We have a large offroad rescue tender that due to it's weight and tires can go a max of 80 Km/h (50mph).. Our motorways are 110 or 130 km/h (70/80 mph) speed limit..

One of the best videos I have seen in a while.
Dam they toured four boroughs in 6 min.
amazing!
man i love NYC NY i lived there for a year and i loved the city. Hard to get pass traffic sometimes. i dont know about you guys but i got used to it. i suport you all guys in your work. nice video
you know your right.we do just as much as they do.shit i went in to a burning building this week for trainning and they do it all the time so i am proud.
I have driven engines and ladder trucks back into NYC after service at Seagrave. Their trucks are governed at 55

Why have so many FDNY trucks collided with each other then? Interesting to note some still leave the siren running even in 2017.
How did their Communications Center was referred to as K when they called the Fire Alarm Office? I believe NYPD was the same.
I like how the cars were passing the Engine on the expressway. Apparently there emergency was more important than the FD's.
@howwon when we respond on the highway and traffic flows cars are passing by as well. Doesn't matter, rather would be even more dangerous when cars that go 80 to 100 mph all have to slow down to 65 or 70. @Medionxtr Usually it it the officer running the sirens and E-Alarm. The driver operates the airhorn from a pull wire next to the door.
the Q is the FED-SIG Q2a... its the mechanical siren you think of when you think of a firetruck, its aka "THE SONG OF THE FIRE DEPT"
Depends on the rig model. Some are a foot petal and some are a button.
The FDNy governs their trucks. At least they use to I don't know if they still do. Last I knew they could only go 45mph.
Yea in pa we run lights/siren until we get into the neighborhood/general area
@AcyclicEarth Also found that it's a Motorola HLN1220(B) handset for use with that Motorola Spectra radio mounted just left of the dash lamp.
Was this engine first-due on this call? That's a long way to go! Nothing closer?
Happens in the uk ,especialy on the motorway, a friend of mine who was a Sub officer (yeah proper rank, now retired), informed me that even under blue lights a fire engine is not permitted in the outside lane ,(classed and an HGV) and if they needed ot pass vehickes they should return to the inside or middle lane and not stay in the outside (fast) lane of any motorway,. hence why, vehicles overtake fire engines regularly on the motorway.

On the radio you can hear a 3rd alarm was going on. They probably responded on that.
It really bothers me when I see idiots who take seconds to decide how best to get out of your way. "just move your fucking car!" not a difficult concept.
Keep up the good work guys! All of yous are heroes!

@vsiNgh420 Thats NYC drivers for ya gotta love them.
@AcyclicEarth Anyone correct me if Im wrong, but I've learned they do use modern mobile radios however they use a telephone style handset instead of a regular microphone so the officer can hear the dispatcher better.
That is one long ride to a call
Who is "in control of" the siren? Is the driver doing it also ?
@hallcert Not sure what they were running on in this video, but if you pay attention to the audio there is a 3 alarm fire working in Bronx. This means ALL of Bronx units are either tied up or filling in at other houses.
Why?
I'm curious to, what's up with the phone? Old school radio or something?
Why do most major city drivers seldom pull over?
what was that emergency vehicle that passed them on the highway on the left?
from what Ive been told Q sirens are not allowed in NYC because with all the buildings the drivers would not know which way the siren was coming from with all the echoing going on.
Gotta love MSU flying by at 3:15 haha.
Where I live at, in Philly, firefighters drive at a much hastier pace than this, especially if it's midnight into the early morning hours if they use the highways to respond.
Heavy truck or not, cars shouldn't be passing this fire truck on the highway the way they are.
Awsome vid ! Thx !
@Kingy12321 Are you seriously asking this question? Look how steady the camera is. It is not being held in anyone's hand. This means it is mounted. In a fire truck. Who do you think put it there?
the engine noise is louder because the camera is in the cab. the siren is on the bumper facing forward.
4:00 LOL! car passing like the Firetruck is driving slow XD
I think it may be easier to just switch the siren knob to Wail than to just keep pressing the manual button (or foot switch)
With a Q, an electronic wail/yelp and the airhorn you can simply blow the cars off the road if they don't get out of your way quick enough xD
New law here ( Washington state) = major fine for not pulling over and/or criminal charge for interfering with emergency responders. Add dashcam to record license tags....
@johnanddan yea thanks but i now no that. be learning a lot recently bout the FDNY
Ye they seem to be!!! Its hard to beat the old Dennis and Scania!!!
mask service unit?
r the sirens manaul or auto?
From one FF in Chgo to any FDNY service member, what does 'K' mean when the companies call on their apparatus radios to their dispatch ?
i believe they went to queens nice vid
@TomTheGrom226 Haha. Lol. It's okay I didn't mean to leave ya speechless there. Speaking of fire trucks, I spotted an Engine this morning riding pass me as I stood at the bus stop on my way home. They responded to a local residence near by with with a few Q's and manual wails at about 25mph no smoke/no fire. If I had a camera to upload it, viewers would've been upset like "GO FASTER!"
Didnt they have any units closer?
@kevinsilverado while driving code-3, it helps get the attention of other drivers, so they can start getting out of the way.
agreed Qs are so much better! especially in new york! they need them!
duh, whats up with all these 'youre so slow'' comments? just think about it, its probably a 40 ton (metric)+, it just takes time to accelerate and brake, you have to be carefull
We get passed left and right on the NJTP. The governor holds it to 52 mph.
I love how the fire truck is getting passed! Do people know how to drive in NYC?
@mattlovesall all though the video doest say... he is most likely responding to another alarm... when they get a call at location "A" the closest house might be house 1, when they trasmit a second alarm the next closet, house 2 will respond then for every alarm after that they send the next closest and so on
r the sirens automatic or what? how do they do them
NEver heard of the PA500. Is it just like a manual push button or what?
Only a volunteer? Dont say things like that. Volunteers do just as much as the paid guys, you know that. Dont degrade yourself like that. More people need to be like you; be proud!
@krazyjk022 because if the siren is left on continuously an unalert driver might block it out when its on off on off on off on off you recognize it much better
no offense intended but from what i can tell, NY drivers aren't the most considerate. love the sirens. classic ny.
warum lassen die trucks immer so rauf und runter und dan kurz und wider lang spielen und nciht normal so hoch runter ??
Its a law that you have to move over for any emergency vehicle.
@jcsii True. Guess I keep imagining a "perfect" world.
Wow... Thats quite a long way to the scene.....
Why does NYFD keep fucking around with that siren instead of just turning it on & LEAVING it on?? WTH??
This is a long response. Was this an "special call for a unit"
do people know how to stop when you hear a firetruck behind you or what?
why does fdny not run continuous sirens?
what is that phone he keeps talking on for?
I like that stuff
Does this have a Q siren?
aren't there any stations in the bronx??
long way to send an engine in a city. why were they sent from Harlem to the Bronx?
0:40 is EXACTLY why when im driveing either the ambo or my civilian car i loolk left nd righ tb4 i cross
at location 3:29 on your clip there appears to be a taxi cab passing you. Do they run Code 3 also to airports and etc? Duhhhhhhhhh ?????? Other than that, nice and SAFE run guys!
they didnn't use a q siren. how come???
3:15 was that a rescue truck?
what's up with these ppl not pulling over?
@ks10308 .. they weren't on the highway the entire time.. its illegal to not pullover in NJ & NY
why cars driving faster than engine?
well wherever people are in the world, if an emergency vehicle needs to pass, they should clear the way...
@JoeLight46 because if you leave it on it will die down. and the multiple quick beeps are more annoying in the sense to get your attention
does anybody get out of the way anymore
what call to they have
why do they have a phone inside the truck?
question why dont they just get a Q?
@wnaburgencesante its a break in your radio transmission.
basicly your saying im done speaking its your turn to speak now when you say K after a transmission
@defender195 no theres only 5 rescue trucks in the city and they are numbered 1 2 3 4 and 5
